  1. The tension in high voltage lines can be sufficient to arc across the air and shock you even without physical contact. This is why you arrange for power to be switched off or diverted before working near them. Obviously that wasn’t part of his apprenticeship.
  2. They should print off the picture of his bandaged body and stick it up in every scooter hire shop. Might make people think twice.
  3. Cheap and safe don’t go together, I wonder which method was used here?
  4. In the West, people tie bunches of flowers to lampposts on the footpaths at the scene of fatalities. Couldn’t the ceremony have been held on the footpath without disrupting everyone else? Or shut the road for a few minutes to honour the dead, not twelve hours.
  5. “Take those guards off, you don’t need them on this machine, they get in the way”.
  6. Tragic but completely avoidable with a little thought. Allowing children to play on a construction site is always dangerous, especially where water is involved. Why wasn’t the grandfather or other family member looking after the child?
  7. Why do reporters feel the need to identify senior officers who only supervise these operations? Is it part of the preening process? Western journalists rarely do this fan boy stuff, preferring to concentrate on the facts of the operation, like the significant recovery of four vehicles over four provinces!
  8. What’s happening to the 154 seized animals not being repatriated? Are they already dead?
  9. Long tail boats are inherently unstable, their narrow beam and high mounted truck engine making them vulnerable to winds and currents from the side. They should be banned for passenger use but won’t be as they are cheap to buy and run and make more profit for their owners at the expense of their passengers’ lives.
  10. Before voting to hang him I think he should be psychologically assessed as his behaviour is not normal. It may be there are mitigating circumstances that should be taken into consideration when deciding the outcome.
  11. I live in a gated community in the suburbs of Bangkok that has a card operated (and 24hr staffed) barrier at the entrance and another at each phase entrance. If anyone wants to visit the guard rides a motorcycle to the house to check. Visitors are issued a paper pass at each checkpoint which I stamp to authorise their exit. Consequently it is very secure and we never have non-residents wandering about. I feel much safer than I ever did in England.
  12. We usually hear about the grandstanding arrests but rarely about their names, charges and their actual court appearance/sentence, seizure of assets, restitution to victims of the criminals. This makes me suspect that many cases are dealt with informally by the transfer of funds to officials before subsequent release, rinse, repeat. Maybe I should start visiting the courts to report on whoever actually appears. Need to improve my Thai, perhaps a local journalist could do their job first.
  13. And why was a 3 year old travelling on a tractor rather than safely with his mother? Doesnt anyone think about safety here?
  14. I find it surprising that they have difficulties in getting suitable interpreters since 30% of Thais are descended from Chinese stock. Although maybe the Uighurs speak an uncommon dialect. I am sure the Chinese government could supply suitable staff as so many of their nationals were affected.
  15. Controlling the parking outside the terminal is not a job I’d like. Drivers, especially the “professionals” are very selfish and uncaring and think they can park anywhere as long as they like. its no wonder Western airports have started charging drop off and pick up fees. i don’t know why they don’t park in the car parks, only a couple of hundred metres for someone to push a trolley, although they would have to pay a parking fee.
  16. Yes, the field rats are the ones you can buy two to a bag at the roadside. They have had a healthy diet, not like the sewer rats that no one eats.
  17. Another lip service announcement to be able to claim they are doing something. I only ever use ride hailing services in Bangkok as I was fed up with all the cheating or refusal to pick up. My answer would be to impose only ride hailing services like Bolt or Grab on all taxis/motorcycle taxis/tuk tuks to control them and keep them honest leaving only songtaews to be a service you hail at the roadside. Almost every tourist and resident can access the apps. In Singapore you cannot even hail a passing taxi, you have to go to an official cab rank or use an app. That could also work in Thailand.
  18. This strategy needs to be attuned with local education strategy for the area. Danger exists for mixed messages to be conveyed, and for cultural differences not to be recognised. Scouting has a long way to recover from all the sexual abuse scandals that have plagued it in the past, and should maybe concentrating on eliminating this behaviour.
  19. Why are a 16 and a 13?year old out at half past midnight? No mention of crash helmets, three on a bike, drug or alcohol impairment.
  20. Difficult to see what forensic reports would take a month to obtain to finalise the investigation. Also the relatives and survivor should be updated regarding the investigation , not forced to conduct their own. No wonder there is so much criticism of RTP conduct.
  21. Allowing WiFi will still enable his gambling habit as well as his drug supply (if he has any credit left). Just a pity that he cannot be confined within a medical facility rather than imprisoned at home.
  22. Treating him as a criminal rather than dealing with his mental health issues will not provide a permanent solution.
  23. Collapsing after only 100m suggests an underlying medical condition rather than the school overstressing him.
  24. Strategy, which spells out what you want to achieve, must always be accompanied by tactics, the way in which you will achieve what you want, and operations, the things you actually do to achieve it. The strategy is clear, the tactics are a little shaky, but what always fails here are the operations. A few short term actions will do little to achieve the long term aims, so this just looks like grandstanding or paying lip service. Without the will to actually start and carry on doing things, this strategy like so many previous ones will just wither and die.
