  1. I’m just surprised they don’t have rigorous auditing systems to check each branch regularly, say 4 times a year. Even just having an audit system provides a strong deterrent.
  2. If you look closely these are ads for water (in small type) that just coincidentally happens to share brand names ( in large type) with some famous beers.
  3. I believe that a previous article said that trading in the shares had been suspended when it collapsed, preventing Pita selling or transferring the shares to anyone. This would be taken into account in a democracy.
  4. Can we look forward to more taxes on Coke, orange juice etc which are also non alcoholic? How about water?
  5. After the recent fireworks tragedy, now this, time for a bit of inspection activity by the relevant agencies. Wait, there aren’t any?
  6. In most democracies, a simple majority is sufficient, wait, what am I saying?
  7. On my kids’ school bus route and my wife visited a nearby clinic just a few hours before. We are counting our lucky stars regarding the timing and condolences to the families of the dead and injured. Hoping for a thorough enquiry to prevent repitition but not holding my breath. School closed at least today.
  8. Stop calling them accidents, which implies no cause, they are collisions where someone is at fault.
  9. This is not such a silly idea. A wrist bracelet with QR code giving ID details and departure date could be affixed at port of arrival, allowing any official or hotel operator with a smartphone camera to interrogate the official immigration records. If you get an extension you get a new bracelet. All paid for by the arrival tax.
  10. Incident yes, accident no. Just as road traffic incidents are described as collisions rather than accidents in the U.K., “accidents” implies that no one is at fault or to blame. Worn out or loose bolts are clear maintenance failures. I hope the investigation includes examination of the maintenance policy and records and of the CCTV that should show the “daily inspections” alleged to be carried out. Let’s see what is actually allowed to come out.
  11. Unfortunately the Thai justice system cannot be compared with the West. Crimes are judged entirely differently, with monetary compensation or social position being taken into consideration more than the effect on the victim. Standards of investigation are low and try to avoid court appearances.
  12. Balconies in many countries in tourist accommodation are often too low, to save construction money. I have experienced this in France and Spain as well as throughout Asia. More publicity needs to be given to these shortcomings and also the exclusions in travel insurance policies that limit insurer’s liabilities in what are sometimes the most serious incidents. Maybe people would take a little more care if they realised the dangers. Thailand ain’t Kansas, Toto!
  13. It’s probably the power supply circuit board if it won’t turn on at all. Easily obtainable on Lazada I think was 700 -900 baht, and simple to fit if you are competent with electricity. Otherwise take to Amorn and see if they will repair cheaper than buying new.
  14. I think someone smells a commission for the purchase and introduction of EVs. Even better if they are mandated by regulation.
  15. Just a reminder that the account you use for this purpose must be in your sole name otherwise the balance required doubles.
  16. No mention of any measures to reduce the toll like increased police patrols to deter speeders, drunk drivers and non-helmet wearers, increased training for drivers or examinations of collision black spots to improve road engineering. Why, because nothing will be done, it’s mostly the poor who suffer and they don’t count.
  17. Another way to interpret the poll is that 70% of people are not opposed to the new government and do not feel that a new coup is likely, whilst over 50% do not think a return to street conflict is likely. It depends whether your cup is half full or half empty and how you choose to spin a poll result.
  18. We could not pay a restaurant bill from either my or my wife’s Bangkok Bank account. Luckily her SCB app worked and she treated me! After 3 weeks in the U.K. using contactless payments, and carrying no cash at all, brought down to earth on my return to the shaky systems here.
  19. Also the import duty and tax on wine needs examination. In Italy last week I enjoyed a bottle of Pinot Grigio for 3 euros, probably 25% of the cost in Thailand. The domestic wine industry is so small the excuse of protecting it is very shallow, the tax is more of an income generator for the Government.
  20. This is a situation where I would expect the Ministry of Education to conduct an impartial enquiry into the circumstances of the disagreements. There may be merit in some of the teacher’s accusations which should be addressed, rather than just expelling the couple.
  21. Take your 2 or 300 baht savings and invest in a new one. Life is too short for such technological problems.
  22. The problem comes with future investigations. Fingerprints or DNA found at crime scenes are compared with those already on record to identify offenders. In the U.K. those are retained even for those released/acquitted except in certain circumstances, but they do not count as a criminal record. I would be concerned if those samples and their identifying information are also destroyed in Thailand as well as removing peoples names from criminal records. Many people have been convicted on the basis of identification from historic samples even after acquittal in earlier cases, they are extremely valuable.
  23. Either the problem is so small as to be insignificant or they are so incompetent they could not detect their way out of a paper bag, or both.
  24. I would not be surprised to find that the restrictions on licensing hours were inherited from the UK as were many other Thai laws. Afternoon closing was introduced in the UK to discourage factory and agricultural workers from failing to return after lunch, and partly for religious reasons, ie Sunday opening. It was abolished some years ago when alcohol was allowed to be sold 24/7. Time to introduce in Thailand and let market forces and local conditions determine when shops and bar owners choose to open for alcohol sales.
  25. Easy pass is the old tolling method which involves you pre loading your account with cash, they give you a RFID token which you fix to your windscreen and is read at the toll booth. M Flow registers your vehicle number plate and this is read as you pass through the M Flow lane. Which is separate to the cash and Easy Pass lanes. They debit your bank account automatically. You need at least Easy Pass as not all routes have M Flow yet. M Flow is an addition for those not prepared to wait the few seconds to queue for Easy Pass gates, but is not essential. Hope this helps.
