  1. I’m not interested in Thai citizenship but permanent residency without all the annual visa extension hoops to jump through would be nice. But this would remove all the visa fees and agent kickbacks from the revenue stream, as well as removing the need for half the IOs so will never happen. Making the stateless citizens will at least remove some of the Immigration workload, and possibly the queues.
  2. Along with your kitchen knives and calculator for bills, a gun is obviously next on the list as an essential restaurant tool here!
  3. “Surely, this must be a misprint?“ Judging by the rate of progress in the Southern provinces massacre case (time expired after 20 years) and the Red Bull heir case (only one charge left after 12 years), the suspects in this case may be allowed 7 years to explain themselves.
  4. I wonder what the victims’ parents thought they were doing, allowing children to be alone with these adult males. I presume they were blinded by the thoughts of money and fame that they would share in.
  5. I cannot believe this story as no senior police officers are named as gallantly leading this raid on these villains and preserving Thailand’s reputation as a crime-free country enforced by positive action!
  6. If previous projects are anything to go by, the biggest delays will be caused by land expropriation and handover to the construction contractors. Second will come the removal of the overpasses and diversion of utilities along the route. I hope lessons have been learned and progress will be made to finally see this project to fruition.
  7. Someone should compare the cost of all the committees and junkets against the actual reduction of pollutants versus previous years. Many air quality monitoring stations are available. What is not available is any enforcement. Then people can judge the value of this strategy.
  8. If I had a big lottery win, I would tell no one. Even my wife would have to be happy with whatever share I gave her. Publicising your luck makes you a target for every beggar, shyster, kidnapper and robber in the world.
  9. Will tachographs and drivers hours regulations/record books ever be introduced in Thailand? Of course that would take enforcement so probably not going to happen.
  10. “Another Canadian flew to Thailand to meet a woman (a teacher in Isaan) he'd been corresponding with online. They went to dinner and then to his hotel (uh huh) where he apparently took a couple extra little blue pills to make sure he'd be "up" to the task - and then croaked on top of her minutes later.” Reminds me of the over 200 pound one legged man in the UK who was shagging his neighbour’s wife in her Mini Countryman in the drive, had a massive heart attack and died on top of her. She was pinned underneath him all day until her husband returned from work and found them. This is a true story.
  11. I can’t see them facing a legal battle. Visa overstay is enough for deportation to Sweden where the police will be glad to see them.
  12. If they transfer the health system to an insurance company (with shareholders and profit expectations) what will that do for access to medical treatment? Will financial limits and access tests and personal contributions be changed to limit the insurance company’s risk? These questions should be answered before this move is approved.
  13. I find it strange that eg Makro sell large quantities of imported fruit, largely from China and India, especially grapes. More effort could be put into encouraging Thai farmers to increase production of high value fruits and vegetables to compete with imports, and even open up new export markets. Concentrating on durian alone is not enough.
  14. Funny how the victim had money to buy alcohol but none to repay his debt. But shocking how cheap life is here.
  15. As a scientist, why doesn’t she accept the results of peer-reviewed research, in spite of her personal agenda? Just lost any credibility as to her authority to pronounce on this subject.
  16. How does he manage to keep renewing his licence at that age, with the eyesight and reaction tests? Oh wait, TIT.
  17. I would have thought it more likely that the thefts were motivated by profit rather than addiction as they were stealing large quantities from multiple outlets. Where do you get your information about addiction? Much less addictive than alcohol or tobacco, and has a calming rather than exciting effect.
  18. Why keep drinking with someone who abuses him? Sensible people would find new friends.
  19. Conveniently extended until the end of high season for the resort.
  20. What about all the other officers in other districts responsible for similar misdeeds? Many other buses were found to be faulty in the first round of inspections, not all from this one office. Unfortunately with the endemic corruption in many government agencies, I am sure this will be contained to blame a few lowly officials if any. My children will never be allowed to travel on a CNG/LPG powered bus and I advise all other parents to make the same decision. Hopefully this will stop this hazardous practice.
  21. Public Service vehicle, coaches and buses for carrying passengers for reward in the UK. Special driving licence/test required, minimum age used to be 21. Heavily regulated in each area by Traffic Commissioners, not like Mickey Mouse and Co. here.
  22. In UK, could be defined as a highway “A highway is any public or private road or other public way on land. It includes not just major roads, but also other public roads and rights of way. ” I appreciate in US there is a different definition.
  23. As she is a minor, doesn’t her father have control of her bank account? He should be able to close her account and retrieve the missing money, or what remains of it.
  24. With the change in shopping habits since Covid and the comparatively new Maya mall down the road, it would be hard to see a case for rebuilding/reopening it. I have fond memories of it but like others think it is destined for condos.
  25. Pedestrian crossings need to be marked better with Belisha beacons (Orange flashing globes) and zig zag markings prohibiting overtaking on the approach side and parking within them, as songtaews often park right on the crossing. As someone pointed out above in Canada, UK, Japan etc there is an absolute duty for drivers to stop as soon as a pedestrian sets foot on the crossing, but here they are ignored. Yesterday I crossed in Bangkok, waving my umbrella to stop the traffic at the crossing, which did, except for the first Fortuner driver (expected) and the Thais behind me were amazed. This should be normal, not exceptional , then children, old people like me and visitors could cross in safety. This requires education and enforcement, both sadly lacking here.
