I went to renew my bike insurance yesterday here in Pattaya. The most I could insure myself for, for accidental personal damage was 20k THB. That's what they call first class insurance. The other party was covered for 50k. Without my medical insurance, in patient only, might as well stick with the compulsory 300 THB government cover. This policy cost me 4,230 THB. I guess it's a snip. So I don't know what kind of insurance foreigners can get to cover these monster bills we read about. Surely the premium would be more than the cost of the holiday?

    Easy answer.

Keep off big bikes when on holiday, in fact in Asia, keep off all two wheeled transport.

  2. What is apparent in all this Covid outbreak is that it was a global overreaction to a relatively MINOR epidemic.

Yes, it affected the old, those already sick, those on medication with weakened immune systems, but for the unbelievable costs involved and a global shutdown, was it worth all that?......... I don't think many governments, on hindsight, think it was.

Many countries will NOT be so quick to jump on the bandwagon in shutting down their economies in the event of another pandemic.

A very old argument that has been debunked before.

The old, "I've lived here for 20 years."  "Oh, great, can you tell me how to do this, or where to find that."  Reply, "I don't know.  I get the Thai missus to do it."  Yes, the amount of time living here definitely makes one more knowledgeable.  :cheesy:

I once met a farang in a bar over a beer who proudly informed me he owned a rubber tree farm in Issan.  I said "That's interesting.  How's the price of a kilo of rubber going on the market these days?"  His reply was, "What do you mean."  :cheesy:

Ahhhh, yes, it's all about the time in country, not experience.

How can it be scaremongering if nobody knows what is going to happen????

Shouldn't it be more "scary" because we don't know what will happen?

    Good Luck with that.

Just keep ignoring.  I'm sure you will be fine.  No surprises for you in the future, no Sir.  Perhaps if you ingore it enough, it will all go away.

Never claimed to be an expert.

What I do know is This Is Thailand, and farang retirees are easy targets for tax money.  We don't live in the cash economy.  We remit our funds and there is a record of every transaction.

Interesting times ahead, but no point arguing with me about tax.  If you have to pay, take it up with the Thai government, but "ignore" at your own peril.

    Yeah, yeah,

Thanks for your in depth analysis and expert advice.

I'll do it my own way, too many guys like you on here.

  4. You see because this is Thai on Thai we won't hear the usual crap today.

They must have done something or stared badly at them; they must have done something to cause it because Thai youths never behave like this, and I've been here 15 years without a problem, blah blah,

This behaviour, unfortunately, is how many of the Thai youth are evolving.

No rules or parameters nor parental care, the same as The West.

The mother of the 19-year-old, 'He's a good boy, he must have fallen under a bad influence or crowd'  a typical mother's response over here, blame the other kid, who was 15!!!

Clearly, not enough.  Keep at it.

You are a falang in Thailand.  You are already "jumping."  Perhaps you just don't know it.

No.  A Thai who gets caught out not paying tax still gets to live in Thailand, right?

It's their birthright.  They are a Thai citizen.

YOU, on the other hand, can be black listed.  Yes, yes, I know.  Rocket science.

Happy New Year to you also.  Stop being naive.

    Stop being a clown.

I've probably been here a lot longer than you.

Nothing about blacklisting, stop your silly scaremongering when nobody knows what is going on with the taxation system apart from rumours.

What will be enforced and not enforced is a matter for debate.

It is also NOT LAW what you are talking about regards taxation changes, and they can be ignored until further clarification.

Far too many ' experts ' on here whose opinion is just that, an opinion without basis, so it's guesswork and plenty of 'What ifs'.

This is pathetic - typical of the Police to charge a foreigner when local Thai's are doing the very same thing in their thousands.

.... and rightly so..  this clearly had nothing to do with the law and everything to do with extorting a foreigner.

Every single hit from a from simple google Image search for New Years Eve in Chiang Mai shows lanterns...

The hypocrisy and targeting of foreginers in this example stinks.

    Thai Police for you.

They can't lie straight in bed this crooked lot

Thai's have a birthright to live in Thailand, you do not.

That means the Thai government says "jump" and you ask "how high?"

Make of that what you will, but if they want your money, and you refuse to pay, you are out.

I think I have done enough research on this without your sixpence worth, and furthermore, I won't be jumping for anybody.

Also, whether Thais have a birthright is irrelevant if they are skirting or avoiding Thai tax law, or are you saying being Thai makes them exempt?

Happy New Year, stop writing drivel.

I do completely agree, alcohol does bring out one's true nature. I think what I was intending to say is that if one is a nasty piece of work with a violent tendency, alcohol tends to exacerbate that.

    Not sure about that.

Many years ago I would react quickly in drink, over the years I mellowed and now ignore any people who try baiting me when alcohol is involved.

That said. I haven't had a beer for four months, it doesn't have the same enjoyment as it used to.

Yes, my Japanese friends are always polite and careful with their English for not many middle aged or elderly Japanese are versed in English language. They are very conscious of losing face with their utterances. Another issue is their lack of understanding western culture and slang .

I spoke to a few younger Japanese in, believe it or not, Soi Nana last year.

There was one guy who spoke for the rest of them, as he was the most fluent in English.

I was very polite too, you find when people are so nice they bring the best out in ourselves.

I found them very nice people and pleasant as well as very well-mannered.
