Hello to all. Was told by a Dutch person a few days back that the border crossing at Mae Sai was closed. She didn't know why.

Can anyone please confirm for me whether this is the case. Or is the border still open?

Asking on behalf of a recent aquaintance who just wants to go across. Not for a border run. Just to see Tachilek. Not much to see I know, but at least he can say he was in Myanmar.

Can't help you with the resin. But for fibreglass sheeting, past the old bus station just after the repair shops on the right hand side, there is at least one shop where they will cut sheeting of various thickness to the size you require.

Also going north, past the Meng Rai monument, I think there is a similar type shop on the right side after you make the first U turn.

Perhaps they can advise you regarding resin you can mix yourself.

You can get a valuation on the land at the land office. But as far as the house goes, its anyone guess. Perhaps a local estate agent is your best bet. Such as Lanna Realty.

Thanks mistephenso. I read the thread. I think even in N.Korea and Iran, they would allow a few foreigners to strum guitars and sing in a bar without criminalizing them. Ok, maybe not those two countries, but in most. Led Zeppelin's Page and Plant did an informal solo gig for a few days in a club in India (before LZ was famous). They didn't get busted.

A number of years ago, I gigged solo in Mexico (playing guitar in two clubs, for some payment). A few weeks later, authorities told me to wrap it up, as I was an illegal alien. Then I had to subsist on corn tortillas and bananas for 3 weeks, as my money dried up.

Seems to me that Robert is asking for information. The question gives all the information that a potential poster requires.

So here goes!!

As far as I am aware, you sit your motorbike/car tests at the same place where we obtain our licences.

Driving north out of town on the highway, cross over the bridge that spans the Mekok and turn right at the traffic lights on the other side of the bridge.

Go straight till you reach the next set of lights/intersection. A left turn there would take you to the airport. But you want to go straight on. after about a kilometer, the 2nd large building on your right is where you want to be.

Unfortunately, at the moment there are roadworks at the traffic lights after the bridge. And you may not be able to turn right. So an alternative way is to turn right at the King Meng Rai statue, drive past the sports stadium and turn left at the new intersection/lights there. then go right at the next intersection. Same again, 2nd big building on your right..

If you are not sure which building, just ask when you are in the vicinity for "khon song"(sp) You will get there.

If you already Have a bike licence they may not require you to sit the test.

Cannot remember the requirements for the car licence as it has been a few years since I got mine Robert. It may be the case that you need to have a 1 year visa to obtain your car licence(non "O" or similar). Perhaps somebody else can clarify this.

have a new pizza joint opened up on sang kong noi PIZZA TERRACE just down from 7 11

the food is fresh and yummy and the price is good too the price of a margarita 150 baht

they have just opened about a month, there is a large parking area and signs in english and thai

the lady cook is thai but has previous experiace running a guesthouse in pai

I second that opinion. We the Farang are just temporary guests if that was not so why would you have to report to immigration every 90 days to update where you are residing even after you have obtained your non immigrant O visa for a years stay.

Philosophically, you could say every person in Thailand is a temporary guest. Certainly temporary. If people own the property here, either privately or via public entities, they should take better care of it. Trash is nearly everywhere. The biggest losers: local flora and fauna. The only wild mammals in northern Thailand are bats and rats. Is Environmental husbandry taught in Thai schools? Should be, along with Garbology (the science of dealing responsibly with trash).

This must have something to do with buying condos.

Back on subject, remember that the condo you buy is for life. Based on experiences in other parts of Thailand, you shouldn't expect to make a profit on selling a condo.No one will want your used condo when they can buy a brand new one.

Yes, adultery is a criminal offense in Thailand, but I'd advise you don't go down that route, especially threatening the guy with legal action. It's likely you're in a particularly unsafe situation right now. I have been here to and narrowly avoided death by tuna jacket potato (with added poison).

Best off get hold of a good lawyer (Issan Lawyers if Sebastian is still about) if there's a lot a stake but get ready to write most of it off, okay all of it in reality. You could look at putting real estate (chanote land title) in your children's names, there's no minimum age a Thai national can own freehold (unless this has changed). At least then it goes to the kids, but there's a legal procedure for this I believe in the family court and can be fraught with problems. Legal 'Trusts' do not exist in Thai law. (Stop laughing at the back!)

You seem calm enough. This is the best way to deal with this. You're number one priority is to have the mindset that everything should be in the best interests of the children. As well it should. Because without you fighting their corner, the future could be bleak. It's no joke that country.

I was lucky in that mother-in-law and the rest of the family are salt of the earth types and all ended well enough, considering. Mum sorted it all out and I'm happy the kids will have a good future. I pop back when I can and Mum keeps "my" house for me so I have somewhere to go. Apparently she's very worried about me back in the UK. Who knows??? The whole thing's utterly potty, but I still regard that kind little village as home and miss the kids terribly.

Apparently the 85-year-old Australian, Richard Jackson Kennedy, had argued with his Thai wife who had left him a few days earlier. She refused to return while she tended to her father in hospital.

The paper said he became crazed slashing his own wrists with a knife and setting fire to the house. When neighbours tried to enter the premises to extinguish the fire he held them back at knifepoint. One of the neighbours was president of the the local Tambon Administration Organisation who ended up getting shot by the elderly farang. He was taken to hospital but died.

From what I could manage to understand from the news this morning(my Thai is way from perfect). In an attempt to stop the Aussie from burning down his house, the Poo Yai Bahn shot the Or Bor Tor by accident when he tried to shoot in the air with his shotgun pistol.

Racked with guilt, he then hung himself.

Firstly. I Have just came back to Thailand from a working trip, so know nothing about the 5000 yearly fee and pay caddy fee only during the week.

Waterford did have a 1500Bt year 1 and 1000Bt per year afterwards membership. With that you paid only 700 Bt per round inc. caddy fee. I think this type of membership is still available.

I have a 1 year Non O A I think. Which I get once a year from the Thai consulate in Glasgow. By virtue of the fact I am married to a Thai national. I pay a flat fee of 90 pounds for this

If you want to obtain your 1 year Visa inside Thailand, that is a different kettle of fish.

There are many posters here who can tell you the requirements doing it that way.

This is my understanding of your 2 other choices. I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong.

Even if you are married to your girlfriend, you will need to show 400,000 Bt in the bank. Deposited no less than 3 months prior to your application. Plus monthly income of around 40,00 Bt per month.

Or if you are old enough and want to stay single (used to be 55, but I think 50 is the minimum age now), you can apply for a 1 year retirement visa. For this you will need to show at least the same as mentioned in option 1.

I await the corrections to my advice.

Mikekim, if you want to play golf twice a week, you can say you will spend around 3000 Bt. That will probably include fuel, greenfees, tips for caddies and usual golf ex,s.

That will get you a round at Waterford and Santiburi. The two best course we have here.

Cheaper if you play with 2nd hand balls like me LOL. Or more, if you are as bad a golfer as me, as I normally end up on the losing teams.

Overall, I think you should start to think of around 40,000/ month minimum.

You may need to show that anyway if you are planning on a Non O visa plus I believe 400,000 in the bank.

I,m not up to date on the financial requirements, as I obtain my Non O visas from outside of Thailand at the moment, being married to a Thai national.

Anyone remember an old Game I used to play on the Amiga 1200. Was a role playing puzzle type game where you looked for keys, swung around on ropes and jumped /somersaulted gaps etc. You were visulized as a small guy.

i am pretty sure it was a persons name that was the game title.

Heard this devastating news this morning. I`m currently in the UK.

Tony was one of my best friends and I will miss him Immensely.

My thoughts are with his wife and kids. And I know he will be sorely missed by many people in Chiang Rai. A real character who would not think twice about going out of his way to help you if he could.

I`ll miss you mate. I know you`ll be up there still trying to help people swing that thing properly.
