  1. We bought a plot of land in Feb 2010, behind Big C. 145 T/W cost 950,000 baht but checking on a few prices this year, land has gone up quite a bit. But as it is the world over location-location-location.

    Nahm tooam

  2. .. the Labour rate for the 3 men who grafted their butts off loading it all and clearing all from my land was 350 bht each. <snip> I paid an extra 350 bht as a tip as in my opinion they did the work of 4 men and deserved a few beers as a thankyou .

    <snip>

Pay up you bloody misers .

    Remember this?

I don't know about labour specifically, but if you base full construction (including materials and labour) on between 8,000 and 10,000 baht a square metre constructed you shouldn't be too far off.

You have got to be off your trolley, one plank short of a pier !! Either that or you've never built a thing here

  3. Ginooooooooooooo, if I am correct then you are soon to be moving to Phayao.

If you want some advice, settle in for a year or two and enjoy your new home, then decide whether you think the restaurant would be a good idea or not.

Do you personally know this cousin? Why is he moving back to Phayao? Do you need the aggravation of having this business running and how much control will you have? How good is your Thai?

Why does the cousin need your financial assistance if he has been successful in Sweden?

These are just a few of the questions you should be asking yourself.

Please don't interpret my post as a slur of any kind against your wifes cousin, but too many people have came to grief getting involved in businesses with relatives and I would not like to see you fall into that category and get a sour introduction to your newfound life here in our beautiful country in which we have chosen to live.

Just my two cents worth mate.

    Good luck.

P.S. On second thoughts what I really meant to say was DON'T DO IT!!!!!!

  4. Shouldn't need any motivation to do 100klicks on a Harley. ;)

I suspect you'll find fellow harley enthusiasts there for sure. Give it a go, and do report back

100 klicks is not an issue.

When I first moved up here 7-8 years ago I was in CR every few days to a week so I decided to pace myself.

In the sticks we move and think very slowly

Yeah, I'm in the sticks too. only 50k's out but I know what you mean. It just got a bit slower as they've pulled my internet service this morning (3bb) with zero notice. they didnt know how to tell us apparently.

So its no more Youtube videos from me for a while which will cheer a few people no end. :D

    FYI Jubby. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/forum/17-internet-computers-communication-technology/

  5. As a matter of fact it wasn't me Jubby. But I know of the incident that happened quite a while ago.

And as Gary has seen fit to comment on it without telling the whole story, so will I.

You're out of order for commenting about it and your exaggereating about the person involved.

That's why your custom has gone down.

  6. For day to day updates on air quality check this site out http://www.pcd.go.th/AirQuality/Regional/Default.cfm

Its better so far this year than its been the last few years.....many move away this time of year including me...

Internet is good here if you have a line put in where you stay....Depends how you qualify good but I can download a film from the net at a rate of 500 kps at times...i use skype on my laptop and get a fair video conversation...takes a while to find yourself here as in getting around and slotting in as. But we have everything everywhere else has just have to look harder sometimes..Oh yes and soon to have a central Plaza which will be nice....Nice place for a week or two or a life time ...

    Best of luck Dave

    Dave go back to bed.

  7. If you are renting a house then you can get good, fast and reliable internet. Slows down for a few hours when the kids get out of school though.

Yes I believe the smoke gets pretty bad at times for the next couple of months. But it's also dependent upon your location. Some people are affected by it more than others. Personally It doesn't bother me one bit.

Everything else you require is here in abundance.

    Enjoy your stay here.

  8. Absolute rubbish John. Because he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth he commands your respect?

Because he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth he deserves your derision.

    ?

The guy is very eloquent and very learned - this is evident - there are an awful lot of privately educated people who are neither.

Where in my post did I deride Mr Fry???:annoyed::boring::passifier:

  9. no price doesn't involve planting or replacement, and yes its the father in-law buying 'em but i trust him, its not his price, he also ain't happy with the price

If your father in law thinks the price is high why has he not got other quotes, there is no shorage of nurseries. It's no different here than in the west, if the price is high go to the competition. Now saying that price is not always the deciding factor, clone type and good trees are worth the extra money.Jim

PS when I said they replace the dead trees, thats there expense. They guarantee that you get X trees alive after 3 months. Jim

Ok Jim, thanks for clarifying that.

  10. Update.

Downloaded core temp and HW monitor. All seems fine except that the +12V colomn shows that the average voltage stays pretty steady at 12.74V. With a high of 12.80V and a low of 12.60V.

Have checked 3/4 times and always same.

Tempertures for core 1 and 2 remain pretty constant at 32-34 deg. respectively with highs and lows of 37 and 36 deg. respectively.

Checked inside case and all seems fine with fans etc.

I'm at a loss at the moment as to what to do next apart from take it to someone else to check it out.

Seems like that will have to be my next move.

Thanks for your help guys. Neat programs for monitoring your system.

    Chang35baht

P.S. Sods law is in effect here as When I'm using the PC now it is fine, but if I Leave it downloading on vuze and I go out leaving it downloading with the monitor switched off. When I come home it has turned itself off.

How do I do a screenshot? I'll show the HW monitor screen.

Sh@t. Its just switched itself off. Lucky I posted 1 second before.

  11. Afarang, jai yen yen. The op asked if anyone knew the current price of young trees. Not where the cheapest ones were on sale.

You just posted an incredible rant based on no info about the OP. Who are you really upset with?

If one is quoted 25 baht in one place and 45 baht in another, then I also would want to know why.

As for r-eplanting included in the price, I would not go down that road personally. There are to many factors involved where the seller can tell you they have died for various reasons and the charge you again for the re-planting.

Check out ordering from elsewhere and see if the transport costs make it economical.

Can you tell us which type of trees you are ordering, just to give us a heads up on current price/type.

There are new strains available which mature quicker and supposedly have a higher yield. But they will only give these results if they are reared properly.

    Good luck with you search.

P.S. Don't forget to but a few spares.

    C35B.

  12. I believe we paid 15 baht per tree for RM600 around 6 years ago. So obviously the price will have risen since then. We ordered from down south.

If the trees are 25 baht in Chantaburi then there's no reason they should be any different in the nurseries near you. Maybe you can order from there at no extra cost.

Are you specifying which type of tree you want?

  13. Hi all. Got back to LOS 7 weeks ago and wife tells me she had to put the desktop PC into shop for repair. Seems they've fitted a new motherboard, AsusM2N68-AM plus. Now after 20-30 mins the pc shuts down on its own. The power button is still illuminated but the comp has shut down or has gone into sleep mode or something.

When I restart IE asks me if I want to restart to the last browsing pages as my comp. shut down unexpectedly.

Been back to the shop 3 times ( most well known shop in Chiang Rai) and 3 times they have told me they have fixed the problem. But no, problem still exists.

First time the Young kid in the shop told me there was a problem with the HDD.Which I thought wasn't correct. 2nd time he told me he opened the comp. all day and it never shut down, but I don't think he worked the comp. So when I took it back I left it with a couple of programmes running an a video running. Went back an hour later and yes, he said it shut down. Wife and kid picked it up last time. never got an expalanation as to the problem. But same scenario. Shuts down after 20-30 mins. This is variable not exact so no scheduled shut downs I think.

I'm usually using the comp. when it shuts down so not going to sleep I think also.

Taking this info from DXDIAG:Running XP pro,AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual processor, 4600+,MMX, 3Dnow (2 CPU's). Display Nvidia Gforce 8400 GS

THis problem has only manifested itself since the fitting of the new motherboard, which I don't know was a necassary refit or not as I wasn't here at the time.

The PC is only just over 2 years old and to be honest doesn' get a lot of use as I mainly use my laptop and the kids are at school in BKK so only use it when they come home on holidays.

My wife only uses the PC to talk to me on Skype when I'm away working.

Any suggestions as to the problem(s) would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Chang35baht.

  14. Most ads tell you something that they actually cannot provide. The quality of the ad will determine the ensuing sales.

Tapping of rubber tree early is done because people want a return on their money before the trees have reached the recognised 6-7 years maturity level/recognised DBH. the downside of tapping trees early is a reduced working life of the tree.

Personally I can`t see a 4 1/2 old year tree having increased production. New strain or not.

If it sounds to good to be true then it usually is.

    Just my opinion.

    C35B.

Appreciate your input. The post relates to a possibler grafting that promotes faster growth and earlier returns

rather than the current - as I mentioned.

Still looking if anyone has had any knowledge / experience otherwise I will give it the usual WPB tretament.

This might be the stock in question.

You dont need Thai to get all the info but it helps.

There is also a mention on this site which I got off a post of JC's

    http://www.rubberthai.com/rubberthai/

So still looking for sensible and qualified feedback.

Thanks for the link Raylo. Interesting indeed.

Now that there`s a rubber tree that is ready for tapping in 4 1/2, 5 years. Thais will start tapping them at 3 or 3 1/2 years.

  16. Sweatysocks? Is that part of the Soapdodger ethnic group?

    Jocks mate :)

    sometimes abbreviated to 'sweaty's'

an honourific title bestowed upon our 'cousins' from north of the border. The one the Romans built a wall on. :)

The romans were a bit thin on the ground so they couldn`t make any headway into Bonnie Scotland. They built a wall to keep themselves safe from invasion.

  17. Boeing757,

sorry I havent replied sooner, following the words of wisdom from member James Collister I did a forum search.

I bookmarked them and meant to post a reply, been too damned busy of late.

Anyway here we go, try the following links, they are very informative, a lot of pertinent information, and as JC mentioned before, a lot of

pie in the sky figures being bandied about, I fear some may well get their fingers burned.

    Links,

The gist of these two threads basically sum up what you have just stated.

I am not a farmer and have no intention of being one, I was looking at it from a purely financial point of view on ROI.

I feel I can better returns elsewhere, stick to something I understand.

Best of luck to all you guys, for many its a labour of love, there are others jumping on the bandwagon, for whom I am sure there may well be dissapointment,

this isnt the get rich quick scheme than some think it is.

Thanks to all who contributed to the two linked posts above, they certainly opened my eyes to whats involved.

May be worth making a pinned thread and combining these threads for others that will surley follow.

Interesting post, after looking at the older posts it made me think of how many people over the years had posted and or written to me, that they had bought or planted rubber. Some in the 100s of Rai. Many of these people should be tapping now, yet I have not seen anyone writing about how successful they have been. Farangs have been coming to Thailand for ages and I can not believe that no one planted rubber 20 years ago, So where are they now.

I think the lack of reports of success should make one think twice before venturing down the rubber path. Jim

It absolutely is not a get rich quick scheme. Those recent posters who have shown an interest in buying farms that are nearly ready for tapping don`t know what they are letting themselves in for. There is good money to be made from rubber but not without a substantial outlay/investment and hard work. Working the farm ourselves has given us good experience and has taught us who we can or cannot trust. Going into it blind , you`ll be leaving yourself wide open to get ripped off

I don`t for one minute think that I will end up bathing in baht, but look forward to a return on my outlay/ investment and hard work that i`ve put in over the last 6 years or so, when we start tapping next year.

    Regards,

    Chang35baht.
