COVID-19: Thailand reports 10,486 new coronavirus cases, 94 deaths
candide replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
It makes sense. However, official Covid death numbers are very far from the excess mortality numbers (i.e. around 16,000 for the month of August, around 9,000 in September). https://ourworldindata.org/excess-mortality-covid -

Condo ownership by foreigners revealed: China tops, UK in third
candide replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
It's a bit more complex than that. To start with, they are probably mainly interested in money and will like anyone who may directly or indirectly bring them some benefits. I also noticed how Chinese Thais are ambiguous about their origin. Unlike the Chinese diaspora in other ASEAN countries, they have not kept their Chinese name and language, and apart from the fact that they may look Chinese, they are not different from other Thai people. I think that one of the reasons is that, unlike in other ASEAN countries, most of their ancestors did not arrive there as merchant, but as poor people doing unskilled jobs. I remember talking to one of them I know, and he was rather elusive about his origin. He finally admitted he had a Chinese grandfather, and after first telling me he did not know his job, he eventually told me he "making deliveries". -
No. His defense was that he got his cheque before the KTB loan occurred. It may be assumed that he got his cheque in advance, knowing it would occur soon, but It's a bit uncertain, isn't it? On the other hand It's true that others took the money and never got annoyed about it, I.e. Prem (I cannot show link, It's in the "other" journal).

Condo ownership by foreigners revealed: China tops, UK in third
candide replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
These figures are meaningless without knowing how many condos have been bought (included by Thai people) during the same period of time. I had a quick look on the Internet and it doesn't look like this information is easy to find. Does anyone knows? -
COVID-19: Thailand reports 9,866 new coronavirus cases, 102 deaths
candide replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
The case of Singapore is interesting as it is the country to have a significant testing policy: around one third of official daily cases compared to Thailand and only one tenth of daily deaths (and the number of official Covid death in Thailand is much lower than the number of excess deaths). -

For example, that there far more unexplained excess deaths than official Covid deaths. For example, 16,126 excess deaths all causes just during the month of August. https://ourworldindata.org/excess-mortality-covid -

Thammanat says ruling party deeply unpopular; must prepare for elections

Thaksin would not like it as the judiciary and other agencies such as the NACC would not obey him. They won't obey him more than they obeyed Yingluck. In Thailand, the appointed powers are not appointed by governments and have other allegiances. Not to mention the Strategic Committee (to which the administration and agencies are complied to obey by law, even if the government orders otherwise), the Strategic plan, and the appointed senate. All these arrangements have been included in the Law in order to prevent a "red" government to freely govern. As concerns your last scenario, Prayut and Prawit are not free to strike any alliance they want, and won't ally with Thaksin unless they are told to do it (which is very unlikely). Just like they made a coup because they were told to. -
Thailand reports 11,252 new COVID-19 cases and 13,695 recoveries
candide replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Interesting observation. There may be three candidate explanations: - the flatness suggests It's related to capacity. Has care capacity been increased recently? - acute illness symptoms leading to admission only occur after a delay. (But I think I read it was rather quick for the delta variant) - the other indicators are not very reliable -
I give you a clue: aren't Biden and the EU aiming at taking back control of (and bringing home) strategic supply chains, in particular of semi-conductors?

Exactly! Most posters here are blinded by short-termism. China is playing the long game. Governed by the same party over time, and likely by Xi untill 2035. A long-term perspective would allow to understand that: - China's moves are just part of a long-term strategy: progressively increase pressure until they are able to control Taiwan in one way or another. - if it cannot be achieved peacefully, they may resort to war, and as you mention, not on short-term. If Xi is factored in, it will be likely in the 2030s. If they do it, they will do it when they are strong enough (easy, It's just another 10 years plan for them), and when external conditions are good (I.e. a political crisis in the U.S.). They will wait for the right time. The only accelerating factor is Xi's alleged will to achieve it before retiring. - the regime's efforts to gain back control of the youth and encourage boy to be more "virile" should also be understood in this perspective.
