Many people like Thailand just the way it is. If they wanted police oversight 24 hours a day they could stay at home.
What are the people’s favourite aspects of Thailand- is it :
The 25,000 annual road deaths .
The 56th and worsening position in the PISA educational tables.
Economic growth falling towards the bottom of the table vs neighbours.
Its position in the Gini inequality index.
Its 20 military coups....
Please feel free to add your own .

If the bright minds spoke honestly about the issues facing Thailand, including its ranking in the PISA educational tables and even the world ranking of the institution hosting this seminar I’m not sure they’d like what they might hear.

I just watch EPL,Champions league, the next day on either,
footballorigin.com or fullmatchesandshows.com,picture
is very good, and if you don't check the scores beforehand,
like watching it live, if any match is removed ,look down in
comments and there is usually a link to the game you want
to watch.
regards worgeordie
The concept is good but the functionality on both sites can be very variable. Usually once or twice during each half it stops with ' there was a problem and the page is being reloaded'. You then have to restart and remember where you were in the match to fast forward to that point. Also they wrongly label the video and find 'first half' is actually the second half so you discover the score! Even had the wrong match shown! Also it can have issues with adblockers
The last few days have been good but at times these sites can be very clunky and frustrating.

I sometimes wonder if the IO people ever go on training courses to establish the requirements as some of them make up the rules as they go along.

What a great way to start my day, reading another load of nonsense from the master story teller.
Does he not understand how ridiculous he makes himself making comments like that?
If that ever happens it would solve the congestion problems in Bangkok, as there would be very few buses and trucks left on the roads.
You’re quite right, but politicians who are not properly challenged nor have a light held up to their ridiculous mantras tend to keep on getting away with increasingly nonsensical statements to the point where they believe their own twaddle and get angry when exposed. See what would happen if a politician faced Question Time in an open Western democracy after having come up with that.

Fair enough. My standards for beaches are pretty high. Phuket is as toxic as Pattaya imo.
As a keen snorkeler and diver I’d agree that in absolute terms Thai beaches are now not great compared to 30 years ago when I first came to Phuket and dived in the Similans. Apart from remote island trips or on speedboat tours there is no decent snorkeling now.

So you’d say that not planning for a 37% reduction in income (exchange rate) and the effects of a military junta coming to power are poor preparations are you?

I tried to edit my post above but can't so an update:
it is one of life's great coincidences that whenever I moan at HD Prime here, I get immediate action from them
So it was today, soon after post #18, I got a reply and they've helped me to reactivateSo fair play to the guy
The TV channels are all working but the real test will come when there's a big EPL game onI too have a lapsed HD Prime account. Can you remember if they have a comprehensive VOD (catch-up) service? The majority of the matches I watch are done that way given the time difference . I know they don’t have chromecast (very behind the times) but maybe screen mirroring by hdmi lead from my iPad?

Trouble with Phuket is it will be absolutely swamped with idiots. Same with Krapi. Moreover, Thailand has a problem despite all the beaches a real lack of beachfront property.
Maybe Koh Lanta. The Swedes love it. The beaches mediocre but it's pretty chill. If they can afford it and truly have no issues with going stir crazy - Koh Ngai. If they don't mind a crunch and expense, Koh Lipe. Lipe will start getting hot end of Feb.
Northwest Koh Phanghan. Koh Tao Ao Muang, Saparot and to the south. NOT the village.
Stay out of ChaAm, Hua Hin, Ban Saphan imo.
Ban Sarey might be ok. Not much to do. Not much beach.
Pattaya perhaps. Wongamat, Naklua NOT the CBD. Maybe the condo stretches of Jomtien but not central area.
I just loathe everything about Koh Samui. It's just a big scam, worse than even Phuket if that's possible.
Costs: just depends. Bungalows start 500 a day maybe up to b1200+ on the beach. Condos maybe 15k short term. Quick walk to Beach.
A tip for bungalows book a few months early November before everyone rocks up. Once high season hits you won't get discounts for long stay in many places. Don't book an entire season, you never know what problems will pop up.
Koh Phayam Buffalo Beach?
Would endorse all this ,especially about being on Andaman side and the negatives of Samui. The beaches on Lanta are rather better than you portray- I’ve visited nearly all of them and certainly less swamped with Russians etc than Phuket. Certainly more laid back but although plenty of restaurants a bit lacking on amenities like supermarkets, shopping etc. but certainly a viable alternative to the Phuket madhouse.

Yes the police could do more, yes the government too but when you have a culture of crass stupidity, mindless disregard for and appreciation of basic safety concerns it really runs so much deeper that. That this appalling tragedy will change absolutely nothing about that mindset is simply reinforcement of Thai society’s failures in this respect.
