  1. At least their females often look good in circus pants. They have also prevented the gays from taking over even more of the Nimman area. Still, no peripheral vision, totally oblivious to others on the road or sidewalk....and real system players when it comes to renting, etc..

  2. These are all places where you could live a full and fun life without owning a car.

Who would want to spend significant time here (retirement) without a vehicle? I am sure the author used the word "car" to mean personal transport, including motorbikes.

If you don't have wheels, then you're a plant.

Actually, it is the motorbike riders who are a lot more likely to become plants (or vegetables). The expense/risk/liability of a car simply aren't worth it. There are too many alternatives, and too many beer promos to attend. So much diabetes here among farang.....Spending 15000 per month on a car, so you can spend 7000 per month in rent with a pack of dogs in San Sai just doesn't come across as financially sound to me.

  3. The fees can vary for filing State, too, and are usually extra.

That's true. I was fortunate enough to leave the US as a Florida resident. smile.png

Same for Nevada and a few others...Washington and Texas, I think. IN Virginia, if you make less than 14000; you don't have to file.

  4. but you don't need a builder...you need a handful of different tradesmen. The wall work is cheap and simple (not a load bearing wall)...but by no means do you want those guys to do any electrical work. Break it down into individual tasks, plot the critical path, and start with the first item...go with them to buy the materials on your account...Even in the West, if you find one guy to do a big remodel project, and advance him money...you are asking for trouble....most work is performed under one contractors license; not by the contractor himself....ironically, they will be the first to point to their subs to blame for trouble, including accidents. You will also learn a new Thai word, that will be frequently used, especially after 14:00....."poong ni." Samesame as "tomollow."

  5. It's highly likely that the Thai bar owner knows someone at the police station, and could be closely related to one, or even one himself. What I've see in my condo, is that eventually enough other Thais will notice a problem and take action....almost never soon enough for me, but eventually, so you are just pissing in the wind to complain about it.

  6. wht's amusing and typical is that an expat couple on 1200 usd per month, could be considered pillars of the Expat community, but a single guy on 500 is an utter disgrace....100 usd per month difference? That could be one prescription, or 2 trips to Duke's per month....I suspect part of the Feminazi war against single males, who have left the pig pens of the West, and found slim/smart LBFMs, while greatly reducing their tax liabilities in their home countries.

the couple share costs like house, electrics, motorbike. so the difference is a lot more then 100 usd.

the economies of scale are actually limited. Eating street food,,,no savings.......songtaews,,no savings....nominal savings on housing, as a couple on a budget will need more space for the same level of comfort...a single person could house share, and that would even be less than half of a good size apartment.

  7. Taxact does schedule D very well...you can import your Fidelity stuff direct, but Scottrade is manual. I'm paying 11.95...as I signed up before the new year. It covers sale of homes and up to 2 rentals, I believe. It allows you to save it in a PDF, after you file electronically...it will also remember your accounts next year. I had paid taxes on dividends in the UK, Germany (26.375%), and Canada....not a problem.

  8. HP products are very expensive here. Lenovo and ASUS seem to offer products in the same ballpark as the US. You can save money building a clone, but you will lose your savings paying full price for Win. Unfortunately, the pirating, that MS knows full well is going on, is really suppressing the emergence of the Chrome OS here, which is really a superior OS. I've spent more time in one evening bringing a Win 7 machine up to speed, than three years of combined maintenance on my Chromebook.

  10. I just called WorldNomads....first, their Explorer plan is only good for 100K USD...but the evacuation part seems good. So the needs of a Canadian are quite different than an American, who doesn't have a primary insurer. Second, they do not offer any direct payment to hospitals,,,so you know what that means....While I was on hold, I extended my www.hcc.com (Tokio Marine) plan for 106 days for 392 USD, I'm early 50s. They offer direct payment to a long list of hospitals in Thailand. But, it can be purchased from a foreign country, after your trip has started, and they don't care if you are basically living there, like I am. I think if you only want 100K...that you could use IMG or HCC.....BTW, 100K in Life Insurance....1 million usd in coverage, 100 usd deductible....250 for a hurt tooth (no deductible), and 10K in personal liability....motorsai is OK.

  11. Just buy a Media Player. 3000-4000 Baht (without HDD).

I have an Asus O!Play and it has been working fine for 3-4 years.

Correct, the OP is describing a type of TV; not a desktop PC....most PC will play HD, viewiing it in HD requires a decent monitor and video card, but a TV with a USB port would be more simple.

  12. You know we like Dayli always have

They have as you mentioned great promos & the food is quite good.

But there is one odd (or not) thing there & it is this...

Try to get a unopened beer

    Will not happen

They will either bring 3 opened bottles to your table or if you request they not open 3 they will just bring one,.

Question them about it & they will always have an excuse...They only open at bar or better this way as to be cold etc.

Yet they would have no problem bringing the three opened & letting them sit if you had not said something

This strikes me as odd how about you?

it's easier to supervise at the bar,,,staff changes....20 thb used to get me one at a time..freezing cold...they even rotated through a big sub-zero freezer, which is now gone....just deduct ice from tip..maybe they will remember. Perhaps, if you could speak Thai like a four year old?????

Sorry slow response dont log in here often.......

Haha yeah thanks but I speak read & write Thai quite well I'm told smile.png

Not that it would matter as out of our group of 6 I am the only non native Thai

I only ask because beer there always seems flat/flatter than normal

Yes last time we were there they did in fact bring them one at a time after we asked not to open all at once & they did say they only open at the bar...

Still quite odd compared to anywhere else where every girl has a opener on their person...Supervise what? You buy a promo your billed period

Inventory less bills equal what should be there or you have a staff with sticky fingers problem

20baht tip?? 555 we would be embarrassed to offer/leave something that tiny facepalm.gif

Supervise them not giving you any warm ones, or worst case ones that were opened five hours ago (oh, they only do that on MM). Considering the Thais usually leave zero, twenty to the bartender is at least a wakeup call, and since previous experience says 100 doesn't get you anywhere, I'll keep the number of carrots small, at this point. Most of my 10 years of drinking there has been great, but the real trouble started when they got rid of the deep freeze rotation, and just became another bar requiring you to buy ice....not to mention the disappearance of the 30-40 thb Thai food items from the menu, and they might have even chased away the satay guy. You claim to be going with five Thais and also claim to be a generous tipper...yet you still have problems getting a relatively simple order correct....I had nine years of success.

  13. I think putting the envelope of cash in the front pouch of your bookbag or carry-on is the best way. You don't want to put loose bills in the tray. but if you don't and they find a wad in your pocket....it just adds more tension to the situation.
