  1. It always amazes me on threads like this where you always get the 'experts' chipping up with the second hand Stickman/Trink 'wisdom' without never having done the job themselves.

I've known my share of bar owners in my years here and not all of them lost their little all. In fact I'd say a fair % of those I've known did (or still do) make a few tidy doubloons out of it.

    I'd say there isn't any 'magic formula' to success apart from a few common elements such as;

'learn as much as you can about the trade'

'get a 'good' woman by your side''

''be prepared to put in the hours - punters can sniff a bar a mile off where the gaffer has 'given up the ghost' and has left the place to become a plaything for his missus and her pals, and tend to avoid them like the plague, that 'abandoned feeling' isn't conducive to a good drink ''

''a sh*t load of good luck''

'Get a new place, make your own 'footprint in the sand' instead of inheriting someone else's' bad rep or bad name''

Good luck. It is indeed a tough caper, however with the right amount of effort and luck there's no reason why you can't do OK out of it.

  2. "Two teenage technical students were shot dead in what police suspect to be an incident of gang violence in Pathum Thani province yesterday morning."

If one doesn't have to study in order to receive passing grades and graduate, then one needs to find something to do with all that spare time.

I am sure the other ASEAN and western nations can't wait to set up businesses in Thailand so they can take advantage of the fine graduates produced by this great educational system.

The only thing that boggles my mind is why U.S. or British TV hasn't developed a Hogan's Heroes or Keeping Up Appearances type of comedy about the Thai education system.

Probably because Thailand is so irrelevant in the west and most people know it only for it's beaches, bars and prostitutes.

    What, pray, is a beach?

  3. I'm self taught, and have no formal education beyond high school (which did not include much 'computing' as it was then known). That's not a regret and has never caused me an issue, even with Nasdaq 100s.

Good thing about Software Engineering, especially when it's publically accessable and web focused, is that proof of ability is easily shown without bits of paper.

I'm sorry but how did you become an engineer without attending university. I know how to code in c++ and php as well, can I call myself a software engineer?

If you're unlucky good enough to be hired as a Software Engineer by Microsoft then yeah, I'd say you can.

    I

i would say that if you are a qualified 'software engineer' then you are beyond the realms of these bloggers, porno bufoons. Or you're just making it up like they all do....

  4. It's all too sad for words really.

On a Friday night these two lads should be thinking about a weekend having a few drinks, a bit of football and (one hopes for them) a bit of crumpet. Instead, because of the moronic need to be the 'big guy', they're on a slab in a mortuary with nothing left.

Their friends or fellow students should be doing the same but rest assured they'll be plotting the 'revenge hit' instead of having some innocent weekend fun.

I'm glad I no longer live in a university area and have to sit and watch these imbeciles snarling and posturing at each other (especially at weekends), parping up and down the roads on their crappy, noisy baby scooters trying to intimidate each other (or others) or plain kicking the sh*t out of each other while I try to enjoy a night out.

The sad thing is that I don't think tough custodial sentences will work. They'll only create more of a 'tough guy' mystique for the perpetrators. What is needed is a public humiliation of the guilty ones such as having 'Mafia Gran' spank their bare bottoms on Prime time TV, 7 nights a week for 6 months.

  5. I love it.

I use the cooler time to do all the things I've put off because of the heat over the past year or so....'Suited and Booted' meetings or catch ups, taking the missus to usually furnace-like markets so she can shop her heart out, getting into the gardening (esp planting) and so on and so forth.

Shows what you know. It's only £2,000 - hardly

a windfall and given the ECB's been telegraphing

its QE/OMT aspirations/intentions for weeks, it

was inevitable the peg would have to go. Stick to

    cheerleading your cronies

If you told me you had shorted EUR/USD I would believe you but even then you would need a credit line of at least 200,000 EUR to make 3000 EUR profit on the 1.5% drop today. As I said dream on.

What is this??? A Pikey being exposed as a fantasist then trying lamely to hit back on the defensive by making unfounded claims about a profession none of us are in!? Whatever next?

I enjoyed the 'View from the Chatuchak Grindhouse with Khao San Road diploma' photo...

  7. On a side note, seriously Thailand is the last place I'd come for a bird, out of the countless girls I've been with here, I couldnt establish an intellectual conversation with any of them. One of them was working as an auditor at Bank of Bangkok, she didnt know who Ben bernanke was, and didnt have a clue about the Enron scandal. They're good when your horny, and theyre sweet people, but would I marry one or date one? Hell no. Western women are despised here, but I actually like the fact that you can have deep conversations with them about life matters etc. Old timers who are chasing uneducated Isaan girls just for their looks are accusing me of being a sex tourist.I'm sorry I cant relate.

I agree with Berkshire. This statement is a little unfair. I'm sure even uneducated Isaan girl would find his lack of skills in the vernacular 'unintellectual' let alone a high class banker. I'm sure if Luke mastered or at least managed a modicum of ability in the local lingo he'd find there are many highly interesting and intelligent women to be found here

  8. I'm not a newbie but I've just taken a runny dump in an upcountry petrol station bog with no tissue or water. I'm not wearing socks and have gone commando today. What should I do?

Order a pizza, and use the napkins.

Given the nature of take away pizza, I'd rather use the pizza and eat the napkins...most take away pizza tastes like it's be used as bog roll already....now the picture gets clearer....

  9. Who wants to spend their better years working their fingers to the bone as a wage slave for someone else, until they feel they've 'paid their dues' to retire to a place in the sun.

What a Lame, if slightly vile, phrase 'wage slave' is. It is noticeably always used by the unemployed/unemployable to indicate that they enjoy a sense of 'freedom' laugh.png while chained to their grindhouses, fantasy lives and laughable poverty.

I'd wager any of these pikeys would love to jump into the life 'slavery' has earned me (and that of others), especially in 5 more years when at the dreadful old age of 50 I'll be able to retire, as you lot will have to carry on scamming/blogging/porning. Keep your deluded sense of 'freedom'.

Last night I had a right good old drink, watched Spurs hammer B*****y, went to bed, woke up at 12 in order to do a bit of work to find my assistant had done it, bless her, am soon heading off out again. Some 'slavery'...thumbsup.gif

  10. Appreciate the only serious reply. I have bought cans of strongbow in pattaya a few years back, now I live in Hua Hin and Makro occasionally have decent cider cans but when you see them buy at once as they only appear once to four times a year, Villa Mart also sell cider albeit 10 baht a can more expensive than Makro, what is strange when Makro has no cider there is none to be found any where in town, Tesco, villa mart, Makro, methinks I was young again I would start importing it as there must be a demand.

The article I read from Singha stated they would be selling Apple cider at 64 baht a small bottle and also that it was a brand new product , not some rehashed oldie.

Maybe I should give up on my dream of a regular supply.

PS moving to korat in two months anyone there know where I can buy.

It would seem to be a problem with distribution possibly the product coming from 'Cider Thailand".

As stated the Singha product isn't a cider as we know it though one hopes it may spark a local taste/fashion/demand in the real thing. The Syder Bay from Singha is a reasonable substitute at only 32B a bottle in three flavours (Peach, Pear/Apple, Another I can't make out but think it's 'berry'). While lacking the throat stinging bite of a true cider, over ice it tickles the tonsils so does at a pinch.

For the time being I'd suggest getting together with a few pals and placing an order with Wishbeer, (I think the bigger the order, the lower the delivery charge) and contacting Cider Thailand about getting supplies.

I'd guess there are expats enough in Khorat to make placing orders with the two companies worthwhile.

    Good luck with your move.

  11. What impression do you think people get of the forum when a reasonable request for advice about moving to Thailand attracts this sort of crap?

Indeed. Shame the envious 'pikids' had to show up spouting their bile at we 'oldies' instead of trying to offer advice to the OP, though it seems they actually have little advice to offer him as he doesn't seem interested in 'movies', 'digital nomadery' 'blogging' or a grindhouse existence with an imaginary 'free' HiSo gf and has the means, qualifications and contacts to actually be a fully functioning member of society here.

Again I'd stress to the OP to use what advantages/privileges he has at his disposal to the fullest extent. Thailand/SEAsia is a tough enough 'nut to crack' for a normal person, let alone a lad with as many advantages as Luke clearly has. Not to use them would be plain crazy.

I know 'wanting to do it off your own back' is very much a symptom of invincible youth but one thing I'll tell you is that I wish I'd have had half the potential 'leg ups' you seem to have back in the day could have saved me a lot of arseache in the long run.

    Good luck lad.

  12. I saw an old yellow and black taxi forlornly decaying in a garden/bit of roadside wasteland the other day near Mor Chit.

I'd not seen one of them old things for donkey's years. Was probably in better nick now than when it was in service.....

  13. Welcome Thailand please come soon

another digital pikey/movie actor/Ed visa abuser/Walt/wannabee/quality tourist in the in the making

Good to see the B.O.M. (Bitter Old Men) are at it again. Taking aim

at anyone young enough to manage a stiffy without a blue pill and

willing to have a go at a life less structured and ordinary.

Even the fat Greek felt emboldened enough to weigh in with a couple

of bitter digs about the guy's age as if he doesn't want to be reminded

of what it was like to be young and attractive to women for more than

an ability to pull a few baht out of his pocket every month.

When it all comes down to it, you people just want to feel

special in some way even if, in reality, you're all pretty dull and boring.

I thank the stars every single day that I never turned out-and

never will turn out-like you people bah.gif

Oh dear, another proven, exposed cyber fantasist, with nothing to add to the topic, trying to make out he's a 25 year old millionaire with a bird he's not paying for or who probably pays the rent for his 2500B a month Udomsuk grindhouse.....He'll be making things up about takeaways and wine next....
