  1. I played a round of golf today at Lanna and I thought I was going to die after the turn... Golf is now off the menu until temperatures drop below those found on the surface of the sun...

  2. The US is safe. Sounds like the OP is just trying to justify the move.

It is OK to say you moved for women. Its why we are all here.

As for your first sentence, it depends on where you live, just like in Thailand... When more US citizens were killed by police in the month of March, 2015 than by the UK police in the last 100 years, I don't know how you can say the US is safe, especially death by police...

Speak for yourself on the second sentence...

You folks that have lived in Thailand and left for various reasons should identify yourselves on this thread, because it is pertinent to the discussion, like Guesthouse and Heijoshincool... Perhaps those of us that still live here and enjoy it have no mandate to justify our decision to you or anyone else for that matter... Case in point, I have never been a victim of violent crime in either the US or Thailand, but have seen it happen in both places... Does that rule out both countries due as a good place to live... No it does not...

  3. Not sure where the OP is getting his info, but Scott recently had hip replacement surgery... No mention of a "heart event" unless this is something new...

As far as being rendered unconscious and not being able to communicate with rescue / health care workers, that's what an insurance card is for in your wallet... As for the assertion that not everyone can get or afford health insurance, have a card in your wallet with a contact name and telephone number in case of emergency... Someone you know who can instruct medical staff what your intentions are... This person could be a friend, relative or possibly an attorney you put on retainer for this purpose... Those who fail to plan, plan to fail...

  4. How many retirees choose their destination for whitewater rafting etc? Think before you write this drivel..

White water rafting may not be a good example, but plenty of people retire in areas where they can enjoy their hobbies, be it white water rafting, kayaking, golf, trekking, swimming, sailing, etc... Why would someone want to retire to a place where there is f##k all to do?

  5. Night sweats are indicative of some underlying medical condition, sometimes serious, sometimes not... I know, because I too have had periodic episodes of night sweats for many years... My condition was brought on by a combination of low thyroid and being borderline leukemic... Best option is for the OP to get routine blood work done as a precaution if nothing else...

  6. Lots of reasons to upgrade from XP, with the biggest reason being that XP will only address 4gb of RAM, along with the memory leaks, security holes, bloated registry, and on and on and on... The only way I can rank Windows 8.x is to say that it's crap... I have left my Windows systems on Win Pro 7.x...

After being a Windoze geek for decades, I decided to buy a Mac Air last year just for giggles... Big mistake as I now no longer use any of my windows machines... I installed Parallels on the Mac and now have a Windows Pro 7 virtual machine if I need it...

  7. Just back from my recon mission and it's official, the lunatics have taken over the asylum... Everyone is fair game anywhere around the moat and in the old city... No shortage of alcoholic beverages on offer, along with barrels of moat water to reload your weapon of choice... Some brave souls were even swimming in the moat!!! I now have to gargle with kerosine to kill whatever I ingested from the moat due to a sniper hitting me right in the mouth as I was having a drink...

Be forewarned, the BiB have the tents setup, the cones are out and the check point manned and ready for customers on the moat road, westbound near Chiang Mai Gate...

  8. Songkran is rather bland around here. I blame it on all the expat whiners that have the temp PM trying to fix things for a minority.

So only a minority of expats whine about songcran, what nonsense, I would say the vast majority of expats get angry at the drunk drivers and motorbike riders, and the retarded water throwers at the side of the road.

I'm sure us expats don't object to people having fun playing with their water cannons, it is not being able to go about our usual business without being attacked by those morons while we are driving or riding our MCs.

It is wrong to force anyone to do want they do not want to do whether it's to do with Songcran or not.

It's the Thai New Years celebration, it is their country, their custom and we are guests here...

Do I really need to say it?

  9. Without quoting the above, in the later 1970's I lived on West 57th Street -- boy what a change from the photos I see now (the big one'll be at 157 W57)

As for the commute NYC to FL, that is why there is JetBlue.

I fly out of Laguardia Airport, , on a Friday evening I am in FL almost as fast as my coworkers get home in the suburbs laugh.png

PS: you should see Brooklyn and LIC anything near the approach bridges to Manhattan is gold. Condominium apt on Kent av in Brooklyn average a million dollars.

Long distance commutes aren't that odd in this day and age... I lived in New Orleans for many years, but never worked there... Every Monday morning I'd be on a flight to some where and on most Fridays catch one back home... Did it for years... I have one friend that lives in Seattle, but works in NYC... I used to regularly bump into him in Costa Rica on the weekends...

  10. IMO, best to rent a bicycle for the first 2 weeks and see how traffic goes in CM. Frankly, i find the pedal bike superior in town. I also have an old car for out-of-town. Would not consider a motorbike. I would not wrestle crocodiles either, though some folks do.

I live about 10 kilometers outside of town... When I want to just putz around the old city, I leave the motorcycle at home, throw my mountain bike in the truck, head into town and park down near Nong Buak Hard park... I then pedal around the old city at my leisure without having to keep up with traffic or walk my arse off... It's hard to take in everything there is to see on a motorbike...

  11. Just get a second hand CB500F, enough power for what you want to do with it and second hand starts as low as 150K.

Enough money left to change/upgrade it to your liking.

I bought a used CB500F a few months ago and could not be happier with the choice... I rented several mid-sized bikes from Pop's in Chiang Mai to compare them before buying... After riding the Versys, CB500/650~s and the ER6N, I liked the CB500F the most, YMMV...

  12. Driving in Atlanta traffic in no way prepares you for the way traffic flows in Thailand... Think of it as a fluid, like water, naam... Wherever there is a gap, someone will fill it, whether it's a reasonable thing to do or not...

My advice is to stick to the center of town for a while and ride the songtaews, tuk tuk, ride a bicycle or just walk... Once you get your bearings, then think about getting a Thai drivers license and renting a scooter...
