I stopped at Bogota... Having lived there, I know this article is crap...

  2. Why didn't the Army move in and arrest them? I thought it was ilegal to protest or gather in a group of 5 or more. Is martial law only preserved for one group of people. The Mad Monk gathers 200+ people to demonstrate and nothing is done and now these people. If the turn a blind eye to some then they have to turn a blind eye for all Thais and not drive a wedge and just look after your friends.

Now, now, mustn't upset the followers of the religion of peace...

They've already taken matters into their own hands by blocking access to the resort, with zero proof the complaint came from there...

  3. Age & Insurance. I was 64 when I bought my CBR 250 and had no problem with 1st Class insurance. If I remember right, I paid a little more, but nothing outrageous.

What is your insurance? You say first class but it is not possible to buy one for your motorcycle only for cars. It would be interesting to know what kind of insurance you have and in what company.

Yes, you can purchase 1st class insurance for motorcycles...

  4. We would really like to move,

Unfortunately finding a new house either detached house or townhouse... is a really hard job to do.

Non of real estate agents want to help, since we have dogs...only place where we can live is Thai style houses from 5500 to 7500 THB.

We used ddproperty website..but unfortunately nobody speaks english when we call.

I am referring to Chiang Mai.

Anyway, thank you very much for all replies and advices...you certainly help me to clarify things...

Not so hard to find a place that will allow pets with a good agent... I used Chiang Mai House and found a nice, quiet place that allows pets, with a reliable landlord in just a few days with these agents... They also speak English...

  5. There was a white line across the road, like there should have been a STOP sign next to it. Maybe there was no sign, but this is Thailand. A sane person would treat it as a stop junction, or at the very least a yield.

The Thai bloke was in the right, and the idiot septic got what he deserved - bang to rights.

Don't blame the Septics, the guy is a Brit...

Unless you count Chinese, Koreans and Russians as 'Farang',

How can Russians be in the same boat with Chinese and Koreans? Russians are Caucasians, aren't they?

Some are, some aren't. Many Russian Asians in Pattaya especially from Siberia/Eastern Russia.

All non Thais are 'Farang'. I thought everybody knows that.coffee1.gif

Err, no, they are not... coffee1.gif

    http://baheyeldin.com/linguistics/thai-word-farang-variations-in-other-languages-arabic-origin.html

this term Farang means "White European" in Thai.

  7. or pose in bikinis on the city walls! Bikinis?!

No, they prefer to dress in university uniforms and do photos at CMU.

Have to admit, the sun dresses that some of the Chinese girl tourists often wear at the university does speed my heart up a tad. biggrin.png

I have to admit that the Old City is awash with Chinese ladies that dress in their finest when out and about... Sun dresses, hats, parasols and huge sun glasses... A dramatic change to the appearance of the average western backpacker chicks around town...

  8. The Greece problem is only the tip of the iceberg... The real threat is the $26 trillion USD in Euro currency derivatives exposure...

“Anyone with half a brain should be able to see that a large number of those patterns are unfolding once again right before our eyes.

Unfortunately, most people in this world end up believing exactly what they want to believe.

No matter how much evidence you show them, they will not accept the truth until it is too late.”

  9. I just went through this and chose the CB500F as it was a good medium-size bike for around town, riding in the mountains around CM and touring... Put a top box and cases on it, along with a stiffer the rear shock/spring... Light and agile enough to maneuver traffic in town and mountain roads and can still run 120 on the highway... The CBR has clip on bars giving a lower the riding position while the CBF has a riser and regular bars giving a more up-right riding position, which for me is more comfortable... The 250's didn't have enough guts while the 650's were heavier and less agile... The 500 has plenty of power for me, although YMMV...

  10. http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_countries_result.jsp?country1=Thailand&country2=United+States

You can customize the pull down menus to fit your needs.

For me, it's not even close as I live in the SF Bay Area.

I will be returning to CM in 18-24 months for good.

I'm 55 years old, don't drink or smoke and will have a monthly income of a little under $1800 a month USD

That would be tough to live on in the US and it would not be in a good area. In CM, I can live on that amount per month and live quite well.

A nicely furnished, western style Condo north of the Moat will run about $275 on average.

Check out Doi Mansion and other places like it.

I will also have a couple of three Million Baht in the bank as well. I would burn thru that money in two/three years, if that, here in the states.

I plan to live in CM for one year minimum to get a handle on my real world expenses and then perhaps, move further South but I like CM except during burning season.

I can also afford to take "mini vacations" every few months for a week or two to the tourist areas in Thailand, or even just leave CM for a couple of months during burning season.

Either way, Thailand is by far one of the best "bang for the buck" retirement destinations in the world.

Well, I guess if you have lived and worked forty years and have only the $1800 per month, and no assets or savings, yes, it could be tough.

Not only have you gone defensive on this thread, but it appears you have lost the ability to read also...

  11. If they cared about the littering, they would put some freaking rubbish bins along Sukhumvit, not gouge the crap out of tourists that haven't a clue that they are falling victim to one of the oldest "legitimate" scams in Bangkok...

There are wheelie bins placed at 100 metre intervals along Sukhumvit, at least from Phrom Phong (Emporium) up to Asok. Plus there are always bins outside 7-11s and Family Marts. No excuse!

But the fine should be a maximum of 2,000 baht.

News to me on rubbish bins, but you missed the point... This is a government sponsored scam that targets foreigners... 2000 - 5000 baht for farang while locals are only charged 200, and that's only if they are stopped, which they are not...

It's not a scam, although it is unfair that Thais are rarely stopped or fined. As someone who lives in the area I'm glad that something is being done to at least try to keep it clean. Litterers get no sympathy from me!

So you don't see it as a problem that the law is selectively enforced and that foreigners are charged anywhere from 10X to 25X what locals are charged? You can't be serious, but if you are, your Thainess is showing...

This debate is ludicrous as anyone that can see beyond their nose knows that Thais are flagrant litterers... To label this activity as anything other than a scam is also ludicrous...
