  1. There are too many people talking out of their ass in this thread.

    A lot - too much - speculation.

Killed on his birthday - sounds like something personal.

I too noticed: "married to a Thai national" and "waiting on his girlfriend"...

Do I need to point something out in this post?

    Is that a joke?

  2. I think that is not a problem. I normally entered Thailand with a tourist visa or a non immigrant visa. I always used the service of Siamese Visa. They are professional.

When i tried to get a visa to go with my boyfriend to England, they were not exactly very accomodating, after the 3rd attempt i was allowed to visit. I was shocked at the way foreigners were treated at the airport and made to wait while all uk citizans cleared customs. Not 1 foreigner moved through customs in over 40 min, my boyfriend was not happy at the way we were treated and when he complained was told to go and sit down, foreigners never have that trouble at our airports

I agree entirely - entering a Euro State or the US is a different experience. Or try Australia. Then go back to Thailand and appreciate the handling there. Some people expect Thai Immigration to roll out a red carpet. In my opinion, compared to entering a western country on a foreign passport, Thailand DOES roll out a red carpet. This is simply a move to make it more difficult for people abusing their visas, eg working, to continue to do so. Unfortunately it will affect others too, but if you have a genuine case for staying in the country long-term, you can get a visa.

  3. How is it that the Bus's owner Sirada Boonme, 26 refuses to provide the names of the 4 thieves in her employ..Shouldn't she be arrested for hindering a police investigation?

Yes isn't it pathetic that such a comment even goes to print. If the cops want info (really want it), they get it. And they can extract it by any means they wish. Not only should she be arrested, she ought to be offering that information willingly. Before it is "extracted". But it is a matter of how interested the police are. If that story runs in a big newspaper abroad, specifically in a country such as UK, Germany or any Scandohooligan country, there would be an order to bring those responsible to justice. And then it would be a matter of hours before those responsible are apprehended......

  4. Just spent three months in Thailand (been many times before) before deciding that I was definitely going to make a permanent move on a retirees visa.

When I arrived at the beginning of August the exchange rate was 31 baht to the Aussie dollar, now it's 23. That makes buying a condo 30% more expensive if I transfer money now.

Also on the news this morning it was predicted that interest rates would fall to 4% in Australia. As the bulk of my income is derived from fixed term deposits that means I'm getting 50% less income.

It all seems to be conspiring against me to make the move at this stage, but what do I do, sit tight and wait for everything to improve? That could be years, and unfortunately I don't have a lot of "good" years left in me.

Let's face it, Thailand is relatively cheap, but if you want to enjoy a good lifestyle (and I don't mean in a village) you still need at least A$500 a week to live.

    Any comments?

Isn't it amazing how fast it all went tits-up? I left a builder working away in my apartment when I was back in Ireland, and now off in work, I am away 2 months in total. I owe the builder 50,000B - thats was 1000 euro a few months ago, now I'll be lucky if 1000 POUNDS will cover it when I get back. And the Aussie has performed almost as bad......

I am waiting for the global slowdown to register in the Thai economy, but it hasn't yet. This is the only way I can see Xrates moving in the near term.......otherwise my spending will have to come in a bit...

  5. I just told the wife about this "news", and she asks why it is not being reported on TV? Then I log on to here and see it is merely a rumor. Passing on rumors this way is not very helpful, in my estimation, anyone can dream up stuff like that. Let's see what happens tomorrow, huh?

I would take anything ripped from The Nation's website with a grain of salt. I worked there for two years after many years as an investigative reporter in the U.S. They're standards for writing articles are quite low. I had many run-ins with reporters trying to write one-source stories based on an interview with an "anonymous" source. The paper is getting worse these days having laid off the majority of its foreign editors and pared down the local staff to a skeleton crew.

    Sir - Their standards.............not "They're standards"........

Who are we to talk about standards, Sir? And you worked there for two years? Did you learn much?

  6. Salvation for the poor

BANGKOK: -- State kicks in nearly Bt50 billion for economic fillip and to help needy make ends meet.

The government will pay water bills for low-income households that consume fewer than 50 cubic litres each month.

    --Xpress/The Nation 2008-07-16

    <deleted> is a cubic litre?

Can't they get journos who understand what they are writing about? Or at least an editor who does?

litre is in the dictionary, mostly British use, they used it properly. <deleted> is a jurnos?

I am thinking this was supposed to read a cubic metre. After all, a cubic litre is not a unit of volume. And 50 litres is about enough water for a shower, 3 flushes and brushing your teeth. I think 1 cubic metre is 1000 litres of water, and I think it weighs 1 metric ton.

  7. Hi,

Because i work out a lot i need a lot more protein (im not going to discuss the merits of it) when i lived in Holland i ate a lot of curd (dutch call it kwark)

Here in this country i cant find it or it might be here at a real high price.

Id like to know if anyone has a suggestion for protein rich thai foods, to make it even harder i dont eat any fish. I eat tuna at times but i cant say i like it i only eat it for the nutritional value and eating to much of it migh cause me to get too many heavy metals in my body.

I am not looking for protein powders because i know where i can get those they are not too expensive and i use them too but i prefer getting my proteins from real foods.

Does anyone have an idea ?

    - chickenbreast

    - tuna (that i dont really like)

    - ....

you could try askin the Billi Boys down on the beach in Patong - they have a plentiful and cheap source of protein, and it obviously works cos they are bigger than all the other chicks. Good luck to you sir

  8. Actually, reading the Gazette's report, it sounds like K Porntip did a fine job in getting help. Seems to me as if the victim might have been a dead man dumped in the water if she hadn't been there, and after what followed, she managed to get 3 flares away to guide the cops in on a longtail. The flares probably helped find the attacker's body too. Good job luv.....

  9. me I love the golf in Phuket; I am a golf fanatic, so I am in heaven. But thats just the start of it really, Phuket provides so many contrasts, so many different things to do and see. You can go mental on Bangla, yet be on a serenely empty beach less than 2km away. The food is fantastic, all the usual Thai food is available, but so is the top end international cuisine.

Even when I over-cook the golf, like last week, and ended up in the outpatient ward in BKK-Pkt hospital, I had a very entertaining afternoon with a gorgeous physio while she fixed my neck, Bravo, no disincentive to hurting it again tho.... :o

  10. Why is it that the first 8 pr 10 comments on this topic are cynical reports on why this is such a stupid idea - actually, I think it is fine idea. It might well be the case that these 10 or so "dos" and "dont's" are the same as available in most tourist guides, but plenty off ppl turn up in Th on holidays without a single word read.

So instead of staging a competition "who can make the most cynical remark about Thailand", why don't you ppl (the competitors), consider whether or not you can predict what those 10 items are going to be. If your comments are anything to go by, I suggest that your ignorance will probably say something also.

    Peace

  11. I care not to read another word in defence of the actions of a Patong Tuktuk driver - they are filth, some of the worst people I have ever encountered. I dont give a monkeys for anyone's side of the story. The Tuktuk driver tried to rip off a tourist, it didnt work, so he stabbed him. I hope they chop his hand off....

  12. Right now a lot of the activists are pointing out potential problems. They have already succeeded in having the anti-coruption group changed and getting the withdrawl of certain potential constitution writers. Now they are pointing out the TRT resignations could be to avoid the 5-year ban, or more to the point a stealth back door for the return of the Thaksin people. The 5-year ban could be legally questionable anyway as to work on TRT executives whether in the party or not it would have to be retroactive as the offence was several months ago. It may well prove to be the case that even if TRT is disolved many executives will not be punished or on appeal will have it overturned. However, it would still be possible to deal Mr. Thaksin and some other critical memebers of the previous government out by finding them guilty of other charges. A simple ban on offenders from holding politcal office in a new constitution would be effective in this.

Good words; something needs to be put in place to prevent a resurgance in the TRT hardcore, in the event of charges never being proven. I think there is a likelyhood that some will slip the net of the corruption busters, possibly by way of more of the same...
