  1. Rubbish, lots of people pay with 500 notes. All the high end shops   Restaurants and hotels, jewellers, all take them. If you have a good meal for 4 and a bottle of wine or two, it’s easily 500€ in Europe ! The notes have to be reasonably clean. Easily changed in Thailand’s too. It’s legal money, why shouldn’t someone / buisness accept these notes ?

Even if they stop printing them or ease the bills out of circulation, there will be a warning and they will still exchange them in the banks for a certain amount of time.

  2. Everyone living or holidaying in Jomtien ( and pattaya) know that the water is filthy, now, and always has been . Sometimes the water is worse, and actually smells, one look years back and Ive never ever even paddled in it. I have mentioned before on here that people living in View Talay filmed the water on different mornings, and you can clearly see a river of black flowing into the sea.Disgusting. The authorities have never done anything, and never will, though I suspect that it’s too late anyway ! While  I’m at it, have a look at second road , Jomtien, it’s one rubbish tip from one end to the other and is used as public toilets for the thousands of buses that stop there . Health hazard signs should be put up on the beaches and some roads.

  3. Long time back in Phuket I rented a small Thai house through the winter. It was very basic, but with a plot of ground in front, and at the back, some coconut trees, and a lot of rubbish. I cleaned it all up, put some plants around the front, used empty coconuts to plant and hang, it all looked very nice. A quick sweep in the morning and i was done. The neighbours looked on at first, then did their own sweeping, the kids brought me plants from the forest behind. It’s just not in a Thais nature to clean up , some of my lovely friends have great houses with just an unorderly mess inside, boxes and piles of stuff all over the place. Each to hi so own I suppose, but when they see foreigners tidying up the place, it does set them thinking. Just like children , set an example.

  4. I also have trouble finding sugar   free products. I did find a new

Lactose free milk , little white packs with black writing on. When those run out, I get the Almond milk ( American diamond company) they have three options, one is nearly sugar free with only 30 calories. The Thai ones are full of sugar. They come at 20 b a brick, at my local 7/11 or Villa store they’ll order  it for me if they run out, sometimes promotions. These are great for cereals , porridge, drinking. Rice milk is also an option if you can find it sugar free.

  5. elgenon, yes, all the legal work and contracts have been set up, and the new owner/ chef is just waiting for the money to come through, as we all know , banks aren’t usually very quick. The previous head chef has retired, so my cousin couldn’t call it all off even if she was allowed to. She’s French, has worked 12 hrs a Day all her life and is looking forward to her retirement, so she’s just going to calm everyone down and just shut up. The high season is a few weeks away with all the May public holidays and estivales , so she doesn’t have any options at all really.

If the place falls apart after that , well. The staff might leave when the takeover happens, they’ll find jobs , no doubt about that. It’s just the thought that someone can turn into a tyrant so quickly, a jekle and Hyde syndrome that is so hard to understand and put up with , even tho it’s not for long.

  6. My cousin who is retired wants to sell her very successful restaurant in France. One of her acquaintances who is a  lady   Thai head chef is very interested in  buying. No problem there, just waiting for her loan to come through at the bank , she has her company set up and lawyers paid for,. Up to here , everything is ok. The cook is already working in the restaurant so as to get used to a new environment and also a huge clientele. This is where she turns into a monster. Screaming at everyone, upsetting the staff, Even being terribly rude and bad spoken to my cousin in front of everyone. It’s unbelievable. She definitely does not want to back out of the deal, and has no problem with the price as it’s a beautiful place in prime location. Having’witnessed this personally yesterday , it quite upset me. My cousin will not answer back as she s really keen on completely retiring soon,  and it’s  only a question of 1 to 2 months for it all to go  through. Of course my cousin can’t stay at home as´ the staff need her there, and until it’s officialy signed and paid ( she has the best lawyer) she must be present. My question, what on earth is she up to, why this awful behaviour so suddenly, we cannot for the life of us understand. Some background, she’s a single mother , boyfriend left her, and has full credentials/ papers etc.35 yrs old. Any insight ?thanks.

  7. Mario666, you must visit the Cai Rang floating market in Can Tho on the Mekong Delta south of Saigon. Must visit very early morning so best to  overnight there.. This is an authentic market, not like the tourist infested ones of Bangkok. It’s huge, rent a boat for a couple of hours, the captain will show you around and take you to the most wonderful little waterways. Have a good camera with you. Sample the  delicious  food and soups served from the market boats directly into yours. Ask him to show you the noodle factory and rice paper producers on the little islands, tho he probably  wont need  asking. I’ve been all over Asia and i can honestly say this place left a lifetime memory. By the way, all this is very inexpensive.

If you have time for another trip, try Hoi An and visit the Japanese houses, and beautiful covered bridge ! Happy travels.

  8. I firmly believe that a visitor visa as Elviajero mentions above would be a very good idea. From experience in my condo bulidings, most of my neighbours are foreigners , most over the age of 60/65, retired , quite well off, are both owners and renting. Most of us eat out in the surrounding restaurants and spend between 4 and 6 months in Thailand during the cold winter months of Europe and elsewhere. Most real tourists who typically stay one or two weeks, prefer to stay at hotels , they do not want to go shopping for food, cleaning a condo, or changing the bed sheets while on a short two weeks holiday !

Thailand allows foreigners to buy condos, and rent them , so why not have a visa that caters to this ? These people do not need a retirement visa, or an expensive Elite visa .Whats the point of sending them on ridiculous borderhops , notifications of address visits and extensions ?

    Just charge a visa fee.

  9. Hi, I think it would be very hard to go back to uk with no money and no job. First, you should get legal custody of your 2 kids. Put them in school, hire a nanny ( friends of mine have a nice older lady taking their kids to and fro school, and cooking their dinner till the parents come home) sure would cost less than 15000 to your girlfriend ! Then take a restraining order out against her. Do it all  legally.
