Removing shoes signifies a gesture of politeness, cultural awareness, and respect for the local community. It's not so much about the cleanliness.

You sound like a Thai going to the UK and refusing to shake hands.

I remove shoes in my home in France and elsewhere. Sometimes I’ll ask friends to remove them too, although my friends know in advance.  I have hand woven Iranian carpets, I don’t want muck on them. Fussy I am, like I keep my car clean , in and out.

No explanation of why Torsak was also transferred. There are no charges or allegations against him.  Sounds like something cooked up with Thaksin.  Big Joke was up in Chiang Mai supposedly providing security for Thaksin, Srettha and some cabinet ministers and no doubt a deal was done.  Torsak is pursuing money laundering charges against Big Joke but Torsak has only 6 months to go before retirement. So two months sitting on the bench will derail the charges against Big Joke who will remain eligible for police chief in October and is young enough to hold the job for 6 years.  A percentage of all he makes over 6 years would be a tidy some not to be sneezed at by Thaksin who needs money to rebuild his political brand and hates spending his own money.

    Thaksin certainly doesn’t need money.

The Kiwi and Swiss low-life morons, and now the Russian bitch. Not good!!! All these  individuals are relatively young and play the victim game to justify their actions. Similar to the Kiwis who were speeding without a motor bike license, ignored the check point and drove away, are now claiming to the NZ newspapers of being potential victims of "potential" police brutality. All of them are baby adults who throw little tantrums when they don't get their own way and get violent. Refuse to accept responsibility or consequences for their actions.

Most of these arrogant people who come to Thailand have a superiority complex. They are literally treating their Thai hosts to being inferior , of less worth, and believe they can treat them  as unfortunately people from certain countries were treated a hundred years ago.
The woman, and any  foreigner who uses unprovoked violence towards anyone , should be deported .

  4. I’m a snowbird. In the 80s I thought Thailand was a paradise . I spent 4/5 months here every year . Went elsewhere too, S.America mostly , but always thought when I retired I’d buy a great condo and live here. I enjoyed visiting all over Thailand often, but also all the neighboring countries, Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore, even Japan., Borneo, Australia etc. Got to 60 and I decided I was better off in the South of France , my hometown , and carrying on spending my winters in Thailand. Luckily never had problems with visas, and I enjoyed leaving Thailand on the border hops or new visa hunting. I know I could never live all the year round tho. I get too bored. And paradise is long gone.

I still like my news and follow AN daily , get help when I need it , now I’m 71 and life all to my liking.

She really just wants to get out of this mess and not be locked down  anymore. Her passport (Laotian) is currently still held by the embassy and they are not just returning it upon request.

I am wondering as well if we do not have the fully picture. The whole thing seems odd. But the embassy offered her only to "borrow" her passport (I saw that email from the embassy staff myself), which was really odd.

I would think that an urgent visit to the Embassy is needed . Is it 100% sure it is the Embassy that has her documents? Could the husband have picked them up, lied, etc ??  When she knows she can apply for a new Laotian passport . Just keep the husband at bay.

Nobody cares about watches anymore except collectors.

Not true, most licensed Rolex shop have a waiting list for certain models and second hand prices of these winners are worth more than new . I have a few friends who have real Rolex and they are not millionaires. Same goes for designer handbags, the Birkin goes for 16 000 € second hand . There are spéciale shops  in France selling these and they are making a fortune . As soon as a certain make comes in it’s gone in a day or two. Why not, if you have the money ?

For Manchester, Lufthansa is good (if not on strike).  Business to Germany, then a short economy flight to UK.

The best 2 flights I’ve taken lately have been with Swiss Air. Absolutely fantastic. I was in business, great service, best meals and drinks I  ever had on a flight, and lay flat . My choice now. I fly via Zurich. Classy airport and services.  Gave up on Emirates since they put older 777s and business was not worth the money. Meals also not as before. Shame, as the flight times suited me perfectly.

  9. A lot of western countries have a great love of animals in general and their own pets. They are looked after properly ( with some nasty exceptions) and there is plenty of free help from vets and SPAs . Nothing like this exists in Thailand, except soi dog , and Thais don’t have this love of animals. I’ve seen some horrific sick dogs wandering the roads and no one gives a damn. They need putting out of their misery immediate. Start on a campaign with advertising to promote sterilization, where everyone who lives in a soi where there are packs of sometimes dangerous dogs  , can contact them and maybe donate to sterilization. Thais are not very good at promoting worthy causes .

But a danger to the public ...?

After what you read in the daily news , many thais are a danger to the public as well ... What to do with them ?

Deport them all to Switzerland ?

If he can’t control his anger then yes, he is a danger to the public. What he did was totally unacceptable. We can all be a bit annoyed sometimes, being pushed in an airport queue, a rude answer, overcharged , but jumping on someone and putting them in hospital, does a normal person do that ? He needs locking up and deported , with a letter and photos for the Swiss authorities.

Having recently moved here I am appalled at the ammount  of rubbish that is tossed out of cars here.  Where I live , near the King's sponsored walking and excercise park it's awful, it's as if everybody accepts that this is where rubbish should be dumped! Now the problem is starting on Soi 88 , in the 5 months I have been here I have seen it deteriorate.

My wife has called the correct department, but they would not put her through to K.Nong who is apparently the head rubbish honcho.....she was told that they do not have the manpower to clean it up...they said they put signs up ...the ones that say there is a 2,000 baht fine for fly tipping, but the problems just get worse. They say there is no money for cctv.

I already collect a whole bin liner of rubbish from the top of my soi once a week, that gives me enough blisters so I don't want to do anymore.

What kind of pressure can we put on the local council to deal with this?

If you have seen this mess please let me know.

Eventually, this will just get worse as I have seen rubbish everywhere.....but it's not a Thai thing, I never saw anything like this where I previously lived in CM for 20 years.

But this is seriously affecting my love for HH

It’s the highway south so huge amounts of traffic, all packaged rubbish Thais eat and drink in their cars and also in the long haul buses.  You cant  cross the road in Hua Hin.

Why would 50% of men still date a Thai bar girl?

By Dan Cheeseman in DEBATE LIFESTYLE BLOG

    thai-bar-girls.jpg

Never has a vote, since Brexit, been so divisive and its the hot topic in Thailand of bar girls. Take a look at the votes from my Facebook page for yourself, it is neck and neck.

On face value we are all flesh and blood right, so should it matter? Well I guess it comes down to your own perception on matters but also there needs to be a reality check here.

I have heard some expats define going with a bar girl not like prostitution but rather more akin to ‘renting a girlfriend’. If you were in Kings Cross London and go with a prostitute it is all about a quick transaction. You pay your money and you get sex. The dynamics can be slightly different in Thailand and you could stay with your ‘rented girlfriend’ for the duration of your holiday.

I always struggled with the idea of dating a bar girl, and I have to admit I have ‘been there, done that’ but was always uncomfortable with what I was doing. It was in my early years of living in Pattaya and all my friends had taken their girlfriends from the bars and I fooled myself into thinking this was the only way if you wanted to live over here. My circles back then were bar related and I had yet to find a job.

One comment to my poll seems to summarise the situation: “You can take the girl out of the bar but you can’t take the bar out of the girl”. Often the girl is tainted by other bar girl talk and they have an expectation for what they should be entitled to being in a ‘farang’ relationship. Paying a ‘retainer’ to the girl each month for starters, but remember my point on perception, some foreigners would defend it by saying you would look after a regular girlfriend in the same way. I cannot look at it in this way, the bar girl expects this money in order to stay with you, a normal girlfriend would be supportive of you.

The other thing I found nuts – and I am not talking about the ladyboys crown jewels – when dating a bar girl all those years back was telling lies to my friends and family. When asked how I met I certainly didn’t say she was a prostitute and that our first ‘date’ cost me one thousand baht! What if I went on to have children with her and my kids asked the same question of how we met?!

    Roosteeeeeeer where are you ???

  13. Nearly all flights everywhere have increased immensely since Covid. Billions of $ were lost. Many would not exist now if the governments hadn’t stepped in. The billions they lost they had/ have to pay back . There is a huge problem with staff ( not only with on flight staff but on the ground too, industrial actions etc ) fuel, and taxes , also the world over.
Easy enough to calculate what a flight costs from A to B. Google.  I often wondered before how on earth some flights could be so cheap . Times have changed and all costs have risen.

My last two flights , first Nice Bristol , 1hr 30 flight time return with easyjet low cost , 0ver 300 €. Not at holiday times.

My second, Nice to Venice , 1 hr flight easyjet low cost, 300 € .

Thats what we have to live with now. Many people I know in EU / Uk travel by car / train and even coach these days. Otherwise they would never be able to go on holiday. Imagine a family with 2 kids doing a long haul , there will be much less families traveling to Asia etc.

Maybe he’s afraid to be outside ? I would be too in his place.  No need for excuses here, what he has done is terrible . He must be a very violent man who is out of control.  A prison sentence and then deportation is deserved.
