Exactly, it's a convenience store, notva supermarket. What's your point? -

So? Makro is good value, better than Tesco. You'd think they'd drive the prices up on both of them if they had a monopoly. What's wrong with 7eleven? Their prices don't even seem to keep up with inflation. They are hardly ripping us off -

Surely, Thailand has enough different supermarkets, no? Lotus's Big C Makro Villa Foodland Tops MaxValu GourmetMarket Rimping FreshMart Any more? Hardly a monopoly. Thailand also has so many fresh markets to choose from too (for food) and there's always 7eleven, Lawson, and Jiffy for your toiletries etc. etc. I am just waiting for Costco to enter Thailand. They are already big in Japan, Taiwan, and starting to expand in China. -

The point was: some people don't like to see others succeed financially. -

Good, they invest their money, they get richer. They deserve their returns. The key is to invest in businesses with pricing power. I imagine the bars are suffering; no pricing power in beer. The poor get into debt to look richer. -
Yeah, here's a real life example. Just spoke to my EX. She was complaining that she only made 1500 yesterday for a day's massage work. And that was without any tips (as she is now working in a Thai residential area and she says they don't tip.) Her new farang BF won't let her massage down Sukhumvit anymore cos he knows what goes on 😏 Still though: 1500 a day for a person with few qualifications (sure, it's hard labor if all the customers want strong massages, but still..) If she gets that 6 days a week, you tell me how much she'd make at the end of the month. I'll wait........ .....but I can tell you she easily clears 25k a month and this is without tips, remember.

I think Thais say "som nam na" 😄 👏 👏 Can't think of the reason for keeping the deposit. The place looks in good condition (minus the writing on the walls). And I don't see how the vandalism to the walls could cost 350k to fix, probably a 10th of that. The security deposit would likely cover it. I think the owner calculated the damage with a multiple of 10 for farang price. Maybe they don't know there is a national effort underway to end dual pricing. 😄 Farang 1 Swindler 0

Tourism Thailand Vows to End Dual Pricing Amid Growing Tourist Backlash
FruitPudding replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Sea Life got me the other day! Took my (Thai) daughter and her friend. Last time I went I booked the tickets there in person showing my driver license and got the Thai price, but this time my daughter's friend booked her ticket online so we did the same When booking online I thought there would be a dual price option. There wasn't. I was pleasantly surprised. I bought the tickets (I couldn't remember the Thai price I paid years ago) and they were a bit pricey. Anyway, whatever.. Then, my daughter's friend told us what she paid online: it was half price. I thought "I wonder what happens if I change the language to Thai on Sea Life's website?" 🤔 Well, of course, different prices appear if you go through the website in Thai language. Their sneakiness is truly applaudable. 👏 -

Disrespect.......to say the least. It should be criminal! They are absolutely, abhorrent, stinky, slimy, little <deleted>s. I haven't seen much trace of respect here to be honest. It's not a place for that. -

I honestly think it's always been full of lowlives. That's why it has attracted such tourists. -

This is what Thailand is for. -
Better not leave your barstool. They are just tricky, slimy, little <deleted>s.

25k including tips is typical for areas like Sukhumvit, Silom, etc. etc. where staff are tipped reasonably well. In areas where they don't get tips, they just earn their basic salary. This whole thread is about tipping. What's hard to understand? I am not talking about areas with just Thai customers, cos they won't get tips. I certainly didn't say "six 2 hour massages." I said my EX does up to 6 massages a day. There are one hour massages available too, you know. And I said they generally get paid 200 baht per massage - and with a 100 baht tip - they don't need that many to get 25k a month, just 3-4 customers a day, 6 days a week. And yes, it is "typical" for massage staff to work 6 days a week, as with bar staff, and restaurant staff, too. Try working on your basic math and reading comprehension.

No, in Thailand that is my experience. You were, I think, comparing service in Thailand to the US. I'd be surprised if Thailand compares.
-
They do down Sukhumvit. Not high-end places, just your typical Irish/English/American/Sports pubs. My EX did this work for a decade and still has friends in the bars. 'Non happy ending' massage staff in Bangkok generally get 200 per massage. If each customer tips 100, then it doesn't take that many customers for them to hit 25k a month, probably around 3-4 customers a day (bearing in mind they work 6 days a week). My EX could get around 6 customers a day, but in non-tourist areas, she'd get no tips. However, in tourist areas 100 was a normal tip. Her cousin does happy ending massage in Phuket and makes 50k plus.
-
Easily with tips. They were making 15,000-20,000 (including tips) when I first arrived back in 2009. Thai massage too, down Sukhumvit. It's pretty easy to get that even without happy endings. They'll make 50k plus if they do happy endings. Hell, where I live I saw an advertisement for a barista in a little gas station coffee shop offering 13,000-18,000 a month......and I live almost an hour from Sukhumvit, not far from the edge of Bangkok. From my experience they just bring food when it's ready without trying to serve the whole table together. Often someone is sitting there 10 mins (maybe longer) without food while others eat. Why should society expect you to pay more regardless of service standards? Many people feel obliged to leave something regardless of service standards and American restaurants often demand a tip, I think. There's a lot of social shame not leaving a tip in the West. Makes no sense.

I agree. I only really like tipping when I have been given some amazing service, like a fantastic massage. Tipping just makes no sense, especially here. Why are teachers, nurses, police officers, soldiers, etc. etc. getting 15k a month, but waitresses and taxi drivers make 25k including tips? Service here usually sucks too. Maybe I'll tip them when me and my family eat our meal together at the same time. They can't even serve a table together. I understand the concept of wanting to tip, but being socially expected to do it is just dumb.
