I don't know about Thailand, but in the US such things are usually done by drug addicts to support their habits. That's a lot of money for a poor lady working hard day after day selling food.

I see these stories, I see these kinds of drunks in person, and I lament that alcohol has such a presence in people's lives that they drink way beyond the point that it's actually enjoyable. When getting drunk becomes its own purpose rather than enjoying yourself, the red line is crossed. It really makes me sad when I see people doing that. Everyone in my family was an alcoholic including me. Two of us recovered, and one died. Now, I rarely drink even a beer, but if I do, it might be one, it might be a few, spaced over the entire night, and never drunk. Each to his own of course, but many don't really know the risk they're taking with health and their behavior.
