expattaxthailand.com advertises a DTA - UK/Thailand webinar in the near future., It is free, just register with them and they will give you a date/time. I did the US pension remittance webinar today and it confirmed all that I have learned to date about my finances/taxes. Plus they give a 15 minute free consultation on one's taxes too.

To expats re some agent info: expattaxthailand.com - provided a webinar today on pensions of different countries - some exempt due to DTA's others not which by now most of us already know. They mentioned that if one has no assessable income (i.e. only have exempted govt pension or social security) then one does not need to get a Thai tax number nor file any tax form. In addition he said that they will give one a 15 minute FREE consultation on one's taxes so if not too convoluted then should be able to help folks. They also have tax prep help, 75K, 12K and 24K depending on how much help is needed. They also have webinars set for DTA's and other tax filing issues in the future. One can contact them and register for the webinars (FREE) via computer (ZOOM). I notice someone has asked about the 800K for visa if it is taxable. Normally, if it is in the first half of the year, and then the person remitted it into a Thai bank, unless the person stayed 180 or more days that calendar year, it wouldn't be taxed but if one did remit the 800K early in the year and stayed the 180+ days, then it would be taxable. Some bit about the source of the 800K pre 2024 savings or whatever - a good question for one considering depositing the money to check with someone who might know for sure. He also said that his office has all the DTA's with Thailand if folks wanted to check on their particular country. Goodluck to all!

That is why the tax agents are jumping for joy looking for all the new clients. I personally am thankful to all the original expat notes in the forum that enabled me to fully understand where I stand in relations to the tax schemes and the DTA, best visa for me. I do hope that some announcements from the revenue department concerning the schemes becomes available so we can stop/start new volume of ideas/opinions. At times fairly entertaining but at other times can be just boring. Best of luck to all.

Thai privilege (Elite) visa
Presnock replied to A free man's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Yes, possibly like the LTR as they dropped the price 50% to attract more people. -
Thai privilege (Elite) visa
Presnock replied to A free man's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
The free golf is one of the tangible benefits in my opinion. If one is an avid golfer it could even save money over the length of the visa. My opinion anyway though I believe this visa if over priced - and they could drop the price just like they did with the LTR by 50% as they were not getting the numbers of people wanting such visa. -
Yes I admit to ignorance of laws in other countries...and I opine often based on the laws in the US. Sorry but Thailand is like the US in that any new government can change whatever they want in their constitution, their tax laws or whatever. The BOI has no more of an idea of what may change than we expats do. On top of that, the current govt may not last either. In any case I do wish the best for all of us. I retired here because I love Thailand - I realize that like anywhere else, not all is perfect but it sure beats life in much of the US right now.

In most free countries, tax laws are changeable by governments and in free countries those leaders could change regularly and then a parlaiment/Congress can approve of those tax changes. that is a basic given...as a signer of the US Declaration of Indepence said only thing for sure in life is taxes and death or words to that effect. Just like Trump gave huge tax breaks to the rich and is promising the same thing for them now and saying he will drop taxes on Social Security. Here, it is the same thing, the royal decree says that the DIRGEN of the revenue dept can determine the dropping of exemption on foreign income... so it could happen an we should not be totally surprised as they CLAIM that they want to have equal taxation on all the residents of Thailand, even to the point of taking tax monies from the rich and giving that money to those not making a basic salary. The only exemptions will probably be the DTA's if they do not want to break treaties with the 61 countries currently having a DTA with Thailand. Other countries (i.e.the PI) are not taxing foreign monies/pensions - only income made in the PI. Perhaps the Thais will recognize this too.

if you extended on Aug 24 using the monthly transfers, then you will need to have 12 monthly transfers when you wish to change next year. That has been how it was explained to me as I used to do the monthly transfers too. But, with all the changes in visas recently, to be sure you should contact immigration unless some "expert" on the renewal methods see this and advises you...I thought that is who is here answering you already but ...

Pheu Thai Party defends ethics in political face-off
Presnock replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
That is the current problem for sure - if they disband this party, penalize those appointed to ministerial jobs, then all those too would be banned for many years before running or accepting any position in a new govt. Pretty soon one could not find anyone to be named or elected as all would be banned. -
Pladao School Ranked Top 3 Globally for Educational Innovation
Presnock replied to Georgealbert's topic in Chiang Mai News
I haven't either, and have lived and worked in many different countries with my two daughters having to use international schools to even begin an adequate education. I used to have to budget for the best schooling available for the children of our office folks so we constantly were evaluating local schools. -

Don’t kill the golden goose! Tax reforms may drive away expats
Presnock replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Agree with you! I too in my career was assigned to many cities where the pollution was very dangerous much of that was prior to unleaded gasoline. I can recall the govt doctors that visited the missions always complained about our outdoor activities (sports, etc) in such pollution,. One female world class runner upon returning to her capital and getting the regular physical, afterwards was told by the doctors that she was in great physical shape but that it was a must that she give up smoking as they showed her pictures of her lungs which appeared to be those of a 2-pack a day smoker. She had never smoked a day in her life - all due to exercising in polluted cities! Even my wife now talks about when we return to our house in CM, those worst 4 months we should consider travelling to some cleaner-air place. -
probably only worried about extra paperwork that the locals will want to see as they possibly might link taxes and visas of expats. I definitely do not have any assessable income IAW Thai revenue dept definition so unless a big change is coming for ALL my only concern will be paperwork to protect my income.

Is as waste of time to ask any official of any office what the next tax scheme may be and how would whatever they do affect anyone - Go to any govt official in any country and you could not get a valid reply as no one has any idea what the future may be. There isn't even any news about the "discussions" as I opine that there are too many rich locals who have asked to stay away from all this for the foreseeable future.
-
well, based on what I read about in the revenue dept English was that the tax exemption on foreign income could be challenged/dropped if the Director General of the Revenu Department so decided. But, since this is an integral part of a visa designed to get wealthier foreigners to come and stay longer in Thailand, thus spend more money, I think they might decide to keep it at least for the foreseeable future. I personally am not worried about that aspect of the visa as the DTA also exempts my pension but I also do like the no 90-day reporting, in and outs of the country, and is certainly less paperwork required qualifications. Can do all at home on a computer! much easier and based on the yearly cost of a what I had retirement O, a tad cheaper. 1900+3800 per year more than the 50,000 for the LTR. So, perfect for me but I also realize that it may not be perfect for all and do not wish the DIRGEN to drop that royal exemption, but, TIT.

LTR also has requirement for insurance coverage. WIth the costs of hospitalization here, and stories of tourists/expats having accidents or health needs and no coverage, made the govt to consider a 300 baht tax on every tourist coming in but that was droped...now it is back in the news but not so that it will be an insurance coverage for tourist but add to the govt coffers suffering from a lack of funds. If one wants to stay without any insurance or fallback plan with a large banking account, I think some here are tired of the "go fund me" requests from hospitalized folks or for sending the body home or local funeral costs. My opinion anyway.

Baht's Biggest Surge Since 1998 Poses Risk to Tourism And Exports
Presnock replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Not only the possibility of having to pay taxes in two separate countries, even if one doesn't have to pay double taxes on any income, just the thoughts of having to do a lot more documentation or if one has a varied income situation, then having to pay a tax agent even to pay less tax or not tax will make many also tired of being a 3rd class resident here. My opinion and currently I feel secure in that this year I am not affected due to DTA and visa but if in the overall schemes that do come up and I do become affected I will have second thoughts about living here until I pass away.- 161 replies

158 dems vote against bill to deport illegals, who commit sex crimes
Presnock replied to riclag's topic in Political Soapbox
Actually, the US House just wastes way too much time on bills such as this when they should be tackling, immigration and budget bills but instead they are following some guidelines from their party and if they wish to garner any support for another term on the government dole, they have to toe the party line. SICK is right and in my opinion getting sicker by the day. -

Presnock replied to riclag's topic in Political Soapbox
They are there illegally and then commit a violent sex crime - just being illegal should make them liable to be exported from the country. The US has some of the most liberal immigration laws of most countries yet illegals continue pouring into the country due to lax enforcement. Time for sure to make the &^%$hole countries pay for sending their folks especially those countries for which the US has paid big $$ to help the problem citizens but which most likely through corruption goes into some politcian's pockets. My opinion on this issue anyway. -

Presnock replied to riclag's topic in Political Soapbox
I hope you mean the US...one can see that the democrats again show their true colors - just like in too many other countries, some in Asia, do not look at rape as the HORRIBLE crime that it is. From what I read and understand, rape victims NEVER fully recover mentally from that violent act yet some rapists get minimum time in prison or even just freedom but have to wear a bracelet of some type so that the police can know where they are for some period of time. But we have seen since the demonstrations by the BLM that the dems have been more lenient on criminals of all types, excusing them based on their poor upbringing. SICK is right in my opinion -
Garbage Republicans Slither Out To Endorse Harris
Presnock replied to DougieMax's topic in Political Soapbox
AGAIN, they all hate TRUMP just as many Dems hated Hillary and crossed over to vote for the other party. Used to be, that there did seem that one or the candidates was not quite as bad, but in recent elections, it is down to the lesser of two evils in my mind. I think the only loser in November will be the citizens of the US and probably allies too. At the very least, I hope it is a peaceful election day and a peaceful turn over of power to the winner. -
Are you planning to travel to Thailand in September?
Presnock replied to Spare-slot's topic in Thailand Travel Forum
Well September is proving its past as the heaviest rains this year. record flooding within the countries rivers and the Mekong too. A mid-sept super typhoon has killed more than 500 Asians, with another storm due this week along a similar path to that of last week and many northern and northeastern provinces are inundated right now so any additional rains will only make things worse. The weather person warned of possible "rain bombs" as some of the thunderstoms drop a ltremendous amount of water and with streams, rivers and cities already flooded, things can only get worse. A visit to Thailand during September this year might be okay for some of the coastal cities with beaches but the waves from storms also affect the travel by boat to some islands. Be aware of local conditions at all times. But still a paradise for many.- 1 reply
