Photo: The Thaiger In an unsettling turn of events, a government official, known as Thanyarot, is on a quest for justice after being sacked from her job of a decade. Her crime? Exposing alleged corruption and fraud linked to an inheritance worth 500 million baht. Thanyarot worked in the registration department and stumbled upon irregularities concerning a deceased millionaire's will. The millionaire's housemaid claimed to be an adopted daughter, eyeing a hefty inheritance, stirring disputes with the millionaire’s biological family. Thanyarot discovered the adoption papers, supposedly proving this claim, were falsified. Her own signature was forged into the documents without her knowledge. Daringly, Thanyarot took her findings to the police and testified in court, which led to the court nullifying the fraudulent adoption document. However, her colleagues, possibly eyeing a slice of the inheritance pie, turned against her, accusing her of misconduct and ultimately dismissing her from her position. In a bitter twist, those involved in the forgery remain employed, casting a shadow over the organisation’s integrity. Despite attempts to bribe her and requests to retract her complaint, Thanyarot stands firm. Her resolve reveals the murky depths of corruption and the personal risks for those who strive to uphold the truth. Further developments rest eagerly awaited as Thanyarot seeks restitution for her unjust dismissal. -- 2024-12-12

File photo for reference only Gold’s cultural and financial significance in Thailand is receiving renewed attention as the world steps into 2025. Known traditionally in Thai culture as a symbol of wealth and prosperity, gold remains central to celebrations like weddings and birthdays, ensuring robust consumer demand. This demand has propelled Thailand ahead in the ASEAN market, marking two consecutive quarters of growth in 2024. Globally, financial inclusion is a critical objective, with gold assuming a pivotal role. Its accessibility to savings, credit, and payment systems drives economic growth and security, encouraging investments and the establishment of businesses. Thailand emerged as a strong performer in financial inclusivity, achieving a 95.6% bank account penetration by 2021, surpassing regional averages in savings and digital payments. Yet, access to credit services in Thailand lags behind, prompting a surge in informal lending, now reaching 30%. Addressing this gap, innovative measures like digitised gold trading through mobile platforms such as the Pao Tang app have been introduced. This shift to online gold trading saw a striking growth, with a 70% rise in new trading accounts reported by YLG Bullion. Gold’s role extends beyond financial mechanisms, bridging inclusion gaps in rural regions. It proves vital in supporting rural communities, often serving as collateral at pawnshops for urgent financial needs. During the 2020 pandemic, gold provided a safety net, with households selling significant quantities for financial relief. The reliability of gold as a store of value amidst global uncertainties is underscored by consumer trust, with a notable 67% viewing it as protection against inflation and currency volatility. As central banks acknowledge its importance in reinforcing balance sheets, gold's attractiveness and average returns—especially in early-year trading—remain strong. Thus, as 2025 unfolds, gold offers Thailand not just cultural continuity but a robust financial tool, reinforcing economic security and a more inclusive financial ecosystem amidst looming uncertainties. -- 2024-12-12

Motorcyclist attacks public bus with rocks, bottles in Nonthaburi By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod An unidentified man driving a white motorcycle chased and attacked a public bus with rocks and bottles in Pak Kret district, Nonthaburi province. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal An unidentified man driving a white motorcycle chased and attacked a public bus with rocks and bottles in Pak Kret district, Nonthaburi province. The event occurred yesterday, December 11, when 37 year old Kwanchai was driving the public bus on route 32 between Wat Pho and Wat Bo in Pak Kret. Alongside him was 36 year old Nattiporn who managed the fare collection. Both later reported the unsettling event to the Nonthaburi City Police Station. Kwanchai recounted the unexpected encounter while driving along Pracharat Road Line 1. As he approached the Bang Pho metro station, a young man on a motorcycle, dressed similarly to a courier, suddenly cut in front of the bus. Kwanchai maintained that he was driving normally and responsibly, particularly because the bus was fully loaded with passengers at the time. Nattiporn shared her perspective on the incident, explaining that they had made a routine stop in front of Yothinburana School to let passengers off. It was at this point that the first alarming event took place. A loud noise, resembling an object hitting the bus window, was heard. The motorcycle rider was spotted standing on the traffic island and threw a bottle at the bus. The passengers, visibly shaken, urged Kwanchai to drive on quickly, suspecting the attack might be linked to local youth conflicts. As the journey continued, the situation escalated. When the bus reached Phibulsongkram Road, the same motorcycle rider reappeared, this time wielding a rock. He dismounted his motorcycle and waited on the traffic island, targeting the driver’s side of the bus with a rock, resulting in a second assault. This time, the rock shattered the windshield but fortunately did not penetrate the vehicle. Concerned for the safety of the passengers, Nattiporn advised them to take cover on the bus floor. “I feared for the passengers’ safety, so I instructed them to lie down.” With the safety of the passengers in mind, Kwanchai decided to let them disembark midway before returning the bus to the depot. The urgency to report the incident to the police was paramount, as the possibility of further attacks was a significant concern. The unsettling events have raised questions about the motive behind the attacks, as neither Kwanchai nor Nattiporn could recall any prior incident that might have provoked such aggression. The randomness of the attack has left both the bus crew and passengers puzzled and wary. This incident sparked a discussion about passenger safety and the unpredictable nature of such violent acts. Public transportation staff often face challenges, but such direct and inexplicable hostility is particularly alarming. The bus company is now reviewing safety protocols to better protect passengers and staff in the future. Police are investigating the incident, seeking to identify the perpetrator and determine the motive behind these aggressive actions. The focus remains on ensuring the safety and security of all those who rely on public transport in the area, reported KhaoSod. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-12

Picture courtesy of KhaoSod By Bright Choomanee A couple from Chiang Rai has been apprehended by cyber police for operating an illegal online lottery and gambling website, with monthly financial transactions amounting to millions. They advertised their services via Facebook, leading to their eventual capture and subsequent legal proceedings. Today, December 12, several high-ranking officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, including Trirong Phiwpan, Wiwat Khamchanan, and Chittipon Ponprueksa, alongside other officials, coordinated a successful operation. They arrested 29 year old Supakorn, and Khwanjira at a residence in Wiang Phang Kham, Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai. The police confiscated several items, including computers, mobile phones, over 400,000 baht (US$11,824) in cash, and gold jewellery. Komson Meepakdee, a senior officer involved in the operation, revealed that the investigation began after identifying illegal sales of the Laotian lottery online. The couple advertised through Facebook pages under the name Lao Lottery Set 4 Numbers and communicated with clients via page inboxes and LINE links. This led investigators to Khwanjira’s location, which prompted them to conduct a raid where they found Supakorn managing customer inquiries and financial transactions related to online gambling. Khwanjira confessed to selling lottery tickets through online channels and Facebook page advertisements. She indicated that many customers showed interest after seeing the ads, resulting in substantial monthly cash flow. “We used social media ads to attract customers, which significantly increased our client base and monthly income.” Supakorn, on the other hand, admitted to being the administrator of the online gambling website offering a variety of services such as casinos, lotteries, and online games. He now faces charges for organising gambling activities and illegally promoting such services through electronic media without official permission, reported KhaoSod. “I managed the website and handled customer interactions, ensuring smooth operations for our online services,” Supakorn said. Both individuals have been handed over to the Mae Sai Police Station for further legal action. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-12

Phu Kradueng National Park shuts down after elephant attack By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Thai PBS Phu Kradueng National Park in Loei province has been closed indefinitely after a wild elephant attacked and killed a female tourist. The Director General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), Atthaphon Charoenchansa, has vowed swift action to ensure safety. In a chilling revelation, the same elephant has returned to the area where the attack occurred, on the path between Phra Phuttha Metta and Namtok Phen Phop Mai, raising fears of another incident, Atthaphon said. “For safety reasons, all entrances to Phu Kradueng National Park have been temporarily closed.” Atthaphon added that wildlife experts are working to control and push the elephant away from the tourist zones. This marks the first recorded incident of a wild elephant attack in Phu Kradueng, and officials are taking no chances. Currently, one of 10 elephants in the area has ventured into tourist zones. If pushing the animal out proves ineffective, park officials may resort to setting up pens in remote locations to manage the elephants far from visitors. Meanwhile, over 500 tourists remain stranded on the mountain. Rescue efforts are underway, with 279 individuals already escorted down to safety. The DNP director plans to oversee the operation personally by December 16. Tourists who planned trips to the park are being offered compensation. Officials are urging visitors to stay away until the situation is declared safe, reported Thai PBS. Phu Kradueng, a popular hiking destination, is famed for its waterfalls and panoramic views. However, this incident underscores the delicate balance between wildlife conservation and tourist safety. Until the rogue elephant is managed, Thailand’s beloved national park will remain off-limits. The Royal Thai Police emphasised their commitment to halting reckless driving practices, reaffirming the severe legal repercussions awaiting those who partake or encourage such activities. The case serves as a high-profile warning to others engaging in or endorsing illegal street racing or stunts. -- 2024-12-12 -

Acting on a tip-off, Thong Pha Phum police, alongside other agencies, discovered an abandoned pickup truck with obscured plates blocking a road. This led them to a forest search, where they found the immigrants hiding. The individuals, unable to communicate due to language barriers and lacking identification, recounted their daunting journey. They crossed the Myanmar-Thailand border and navigated dense jungle to reach Sangkhla Buri's river port. Here, they boarded a boat to what would become their pickup point – leading to their eventual discovery. Interestingly, each migrant had paid 75,000 baht (£1,900) to traffickers, hoping to traverse Thailand en route to Malaysia for work. The operation took a twist as police arrested the driver of the pickup, identifying him as one of the smugglers. The vehicle was seized, and the immigrants have been moved to local police custody, with legal proceedings anticipated. Authorities are persistently tackling the issues of illegal immigration and human trafficking in the area. -- 2024-12-12

Photo: The Thaiger The Thai Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, announced the expected release of four Thai crew members detained in Myanmar after a maritime incident. They were held following a violent encounter on November 30, where Myanmar patrol boats fired on 15 vessels near Thailand's border, leading to one fatality. Despite ongoing legal procedures in Myanmar, PM Paetongtarn assured the crew's safety. Diplomatic discussions, including a meeting on December 19 between Thai and Myanmar foreign ministers, are aiming for the crew's release soon after the New Year. The incident, which sparked calls from opposition leader Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn for quicker action, has been deemed a disproportionate reaction by Myanmar's patrols. He urges for a definitive release date and compensation for the affected crew. Thailand is considering various diplomatic avenues, including potential discussions at the upcoming ASEAN ministerial meeting and direct negotiations with Myanmar’s military leader, to expedite the process. -- 2024-12-12

File photo for reference only A 21-year-old man from Myanmar, known as Paii, found himself in custody at Chalong Pier after being apprehended for operating an illegal tourist boat operation. The Marine Police, during a routine check, discovered Paii running services with a raft of violations. This arrest forms part of a larger effort to tackle unlicensed operations within Phuket's bustling tourism sector—a region experiencing an uptick in attempts to bypass regulations. Officers routinely monitor these activities to ensure visitor safety and compliance with local laws. Paii is charged with several offences, including working without a valid permit as stipulated under the Royal Decree on the Management of Foreign Workers. Additionally, he operated a boat with an expired license under the Thai Navigation Act and lacked the necessary certification to prove his qualifications. The longtail boat in question was transporting tourists from Koh Lone to Chalong Pier when officials discovered its license had lapsed on November 5. When asked for documents, Paii was unable to provide a proper work permit, valid boat license, or certification of competence. He was first taken to the Marine Police's Region 3 offices for initial processing before being transferred to Chalong Police Station for further proceedings. Although it's clear that Paii was at the helm, the question of whether he owned the boat or worked for an employer remains unanswered, leaving the door open on the extent of this illegal enterprise. The incident sends a clear message about the Marine Police's commitment to curbing illegal activities, protecting tourists, and maintaining safety standards in Phuket's renowned tourism industry. -- 2024-12-12

3 Prachin Buri bodyguards nabbed over deadly shooting of PAO candidate By Petch Petpailin Photo via ThaiRath Police arrested three bodyguards of the Prachin Buri Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) chief for the fatal shooting of the next PAO chief candidate last night. Photo via ThaiRath By Petch Petpailin Police arrested three bodyguards of the Prachin Buri Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) chief for the fatal shooting of the next PAO chief candidate last night. The shooting broke out in the two-storey house of the PAO‘s chief executive, Sunthorn Wilawan, at around 9pm, December 11. Locals heard multiple gunshots before everything went silent. Sunthorn’s pet dogs continued barking. Later, at around 9.45pm, commando police arrived at the scene and negotiated with Sunthorn and his bodyguards before investigating the house. Officers found the lifeless body of 48 year old Chaimate “Tong” Sittisanitpong with multiple gunshot wounds. Chaimate was Sunthorn’s adopted son and worked closely with him for a long time. He was an influential person in the province and also a former leading member of the Prachin Buri Provincial Council. Two assault rifles and a 9mm pistol were found in the hallway of the house. Ten bullet casings were found at the scene. Matichon and DailyNews reported that Chaimate visited Sunthorn’s house to discuss the upcoming PAO chief election as Sunthorn planned to step down. The internal meeting was held to discuss who would be the next candidate for this important election. They may not have been able to agree on the matter, leading to the fatal shooting. Three gunmen were arrested at the scene, all of whom were Suthorn’s bodyguards. They denied giving any information to the police and concealed the motive for the fatal shooting. Accordingly, officers were required to arrest Suthorn along with three family members residing at the same address. They have been under questioning since last night. KhaoSod reported today, December 12, that Sunthorn appeared unfazed by the fatal shooting that occurred in his home and maintained that he was not involved. Suthorn said he planned to step down and let his adopted son join the next election. On the day of the incident, they nicely agreed on the matter. However, the deceased had a long-standing conflict with his bodyguards, leading to the fatal shooting. Suthorn is one of the most powerful politicians in the province and used to serve as the Deputy Minister of Education. His daughter, Kanokwan Wilawan, also followed in her father’s political footsteps and became the Deputy Minister of Education during the reign of former Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. Unfortunately, Kanokwan had to resign from her position due to the Khao Yai forest encroachment case. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-12

Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal A 21 year old Thai woman has been arrested after her younger sister allegedly coaxed her into opening a bank account under the guise of saving salary money for her niece, only for it to be used as a mule account in a call centre scam. Police officers, led by Police Major General Kongkrit Leothsithikul, took action yesterday, December 11, following arrest warrants issued by the Minburi Criminal Court against 21 year old Nuengsuda. The charges included fraud by impersonating another person and inputting false information into a computer system. Similar warrants were also issued by the Lopburi and Chum Phae provincial courts. The arrest took place at the Kui Buri railway station in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. Police received information about a suspect travelling by train to Kui Buri station. Officers set up surveillance and apprehended the suspect as she disembarked from train number 254, running from Lang Suan to Thonburi. The arrest was made promptly upon her arrival at the station. With tears in her eyes, Nuengsuda explained that she had opened the bank account because her younger sister requested it, claiming it would be used for her niece’s salary deposits. Out of love and trust for her sibling, she agreed to the request, unaware that the account would become a mule account for a call centre scam, resulting in complaints from victims across three jurisdictions, reported KhaoSod. “I want to warn others to be cautious. If anyone asks you to open an account, whether they’re family or acquaintances, it’s best to refuse to prevent situations like mine.” Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-12

Picture courtesy of KhaoSod By Bright Choomanee A man caused chaos in a Nong Chok neighbourhood in Bangkok by brandishing a shotgun and challenging police officers to a fist fight. Residents were frustrated by the commotion caused by the inebriated individual. This incident occurred yesterday, December 11, around 10.30pm, following a police report from the local. Police Lieutenant Chairat Charasmetawit, an investigator at Nong Chok Police Station, received a complaint about a drunken man with a firearm causing a disturbance outside a house in a local village. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Weerapong dancing erratically, shouting, and blaring music in front of his home. Officers Panomphon Jaitiang and Sitthiporn Duangsuwan approached him to issue a warning and requested to search him for any illegal items. However, Weerapong resisted and became increasingly agitated, refusing to allow the search and causing a scene while the officers attempted to summon his wife to the location. Weerapong then retreated into his house, only to emerge with a shotgun loaded with five shells. He ran outside, pointing the gun at the arresting officers. Recognising the potential danger, Officer Panomphon engaged in a negotiation with Weerapong, urging him to calm down and put down the weapon. Subsequently, Weerapong boldly challenged Officer Sitthiporn, taunting him to remove his uniform and fight him one-on-one, declaring that he was unafraid. The arresting officers managed to subdue Weerapong and confiscated the firearm as evidence. Officer Sitthiporn inspected the weapon, discovering one 12-gauge cartridge in the chamber and four additional rounds within the gun. The police filed preliminary charges against Weerapong, including insulting an officer performing official duties, resisting or obstructing officers in the course of their duties, using a firearm, creating a public disturbance without reasonable cause, intimidating others, and causing fear or panic through threats. He was also charged with consuming alcohol and causing a public nuisance through loud noise, reported KhaoSod. The detainee, along with the confiscated evidence, was handed over to the investigators at Nong Chok Police Station for further legal proceedings. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-12
