Picture courtesy of dailynews By Bright Choomanee A woman with 12 arrest warrants, primarily for embezzlement and fraud, was apprehended by police after a chase through a wooded area in Roi Et province, Thailand. Despite the charges, she continues to deny any wrongdoing. Police officers, under the direction of Montri Tetsan, ordered the arrest of 41 year old Jirachaya, in response to a warrant issued by Khon Kaen Provincial Court on December 27, 2023. The charges include embezzlement and illegal money lending at interest rates exceeding legal limits. Jirachaya was captured behind a school in the small town of Moei Wadi, Roi Et. Back in November, victims of Jirachaya’s alleged scams sought assistance from the Crime Suppression Division, urging them to arrest her. Despite being pursued for more than 10 warrants related to embezzlement and document forgery, Jirachaya eluded capture for a prolonged period. In 2023, Jirachaya was reportedly involved with a group of brokers, deceiving individuals into pawning their trucks. She collected 300,000 baht (US$8,820) from a victim at a petrol station in Khon Kaen in exchange for vehicle keys, earning a 4,000 baht (US$117) commission. When the victim later sought to reclaim their vehicle, Jirachaya was unable to return it, leading to legal action against her. A thorough investigation of her background revealed that Jirachaya had 12 active warrants, all related to repeated embezzlement and document forgery cases. Her actions made her a high-priority target for law enforcement, yet she successfully evaded arrest by constantly changing her location, a strategy she maintained since 2019. Police recently received information about Jirachaya’s whereabouts in Moei Wadi, Roi Et. When she spotted the police, she fled into a nearby thicket, managing to cover nearly half a kilometre before being apprehended. Upon capture, she consistently denied all accusations, reported KhaoSod. Despite her claims, she was transported to Khon Kaen Provincial Court to face legal proceedings. Photo via Channel 7 By Petch Petpailin A Thai man issued a warning to motorists in Chon Buri after an unknown woman entered his car while he was parked at a red light and urged him to continue driving without providing a clear destination. The Thai man shared dashcam footage of the woman entering his car with Channel 7. The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, December 10, at around 11pm on Sai Nueng Road in Chon Buri province. In the video, the woman was seen running from the footpath and immediately entering the victim’s car. The man was heard asking, “Why did you get into my car?” The woman responded, “I just want to get in. I just want to go along.” The man appeared confused and then asked if she ran from any danger but she denied it. He then asked where she wanted to go but she could not provide an answer. The driver later gave an interview with Channel 7, saying the woman appeared frightened as if she had just escaped from something dangerous. She did not tell him where she wanted to go and kept asking him to continue driving. The driver stated he was concerned about her but also worried about his own safety. Not wanting to abandon her in case she was in danger, he continued to converse with her until the traffic light turned green and then rushed to a nearby police booth. According to the driver, the police later informed him that the woman had a mental health illness, adding they would find care for her and contacted her relatives the following morning. Many Thai netizens speculated whether the car would have automatically locked while driving, though some pointed out that the system depends on the car model. The driver did not clarify why he left his car door unlocked. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-12

Photo courtesy of TMN Cable TV Pattaya via Pattaya News By Puntid Tantivangphaisal A dramatic accident unfolded on Pattaya Beach Road in the early hours of today, leaving three people injured after a woman, distracted by her phone, was struck by an electric motorcycle. Pattaya police responded to a call about the incident at 12.10am today, December 12, quickly coordinating with rescue volunteers from Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the green electric motorcycle overturned in the middle of the road, with significant damage. The rider, 37 year old Thongkham Phutthet, was found with injuries including left arm pain and a cut lip. His 18 year old female passenger had minor abrasions. However, the pedestrian, identified as 40 year old Wasana Nontasen, was in far worse condition. She had suffered a head injury and pain in her left arm. Rescue workers quickly administered first aid before transporting all three individuals to a nearby hospital. According to Thongkham, he was carrying his passenger along the beach road when Wasana, distracted by her phone, suddenly stepped into the street and cut directly in front of him. Despite his attempts to avoid the collision, the crash was unavoidable. Police are now investigating the incident, with the distracted pedestrian at the centre of their inquiry. With more and more people walking and driving while glued to their phones, the risk of such accidents continues to grow, reported Pattaya News. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-12

File photo for reference only Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra of Thailand has publicly celebrated her administration's achievements within their first 90 days and laid out a comprehensive vision titled "2025 A Real Opportunity for Thailand." Addressing pressing environmental and infrastructure issues takes precedence, with water management highlighted as a critical area. Through collaborations with private sectors, significant canal projects are underway to better manage floods and droughts. Addressing pollution, her government has set ambitious targets to reduce PM 2.5 levels by enforcing stricter anti-burning laws, negotiating to reduce cross-border haze, and introducing a new Clean Air Act. Efforts to dismantle monopolies in agriculture and energy aim to bolster citizens' livelihoods by enabling direct exports for farmers and reducing energy costs. An affordable 20-baht rail mass transit is proposed to enhance public transport in Bangkok. The government also plans significant debt relief measures, including loan moratoriums and debt forgiveness for smaller amounts, alongside a five-billion-baht SME support fund. Digital advancements are crucial to Paetongtarn's agenda, with initiatives like the Digital Wallet Scheme aiding over four million seniors and expanding to broader demographics soon. In education, the focus is on programs like the "One District, One Scholarship" and "One District, One Summer Camp," aiming to uplift students through scholarships and language training funded by lottery revenues. Additionally, district schools are set for upgrades with a focus on advanced technology and language education. Grassroots empowerment continues under the SML Program and the "Homes for Thais" policy hopes to make homeownership more accessible with affordable housing options. Paetongtarn's address passionately reiterated her mission: "Our mission is to empower citizens, reduce centralized power, and build a nation where everyone has the opportunity to prosper with dignity." Her future-forward policies have set the stage for a hopeful and transformative journey towards 2025. -- 2024-12-12

Photo: The Thaiger In an unsettling turn of events, a government official, known as Thanyarot, is on a quest for justice after being sacked from her job of a decade. Her crime? Exposing alleged corruption and fraud linked to an inheritance worth 500 million baht. Thanyarot worked in the registration department and stumbled upon irregularities concerning a deceased millionaire's will. The millionaire's housemaid claimed to be an adopted daughter, eyeing a hefty inheritance, stirring disputes with the millionaire’s biological family. Thanyarot discovered the adoption papers, supposedly proving this claim, were falsified. Her own signature was forged into the documents without her knowledge. Daringly, Thanyarot took her findings to the police and testified in court, which led to the court nullifying the fraudulent adoption document. However, her colleagues, possibly eyeing a slice of the inheritance pie, turned against her, accusing her of misconduct and ultimately dismissing her from her position. In a bitter twist, those involved in the forgery remain employed, casting a shadow over the organisation’s integrity. Despite attempts to bribe her and requests to retract her complaint, Thanyarot stands firm. Her resolve reveals the murky depths of corruption and the personal risks for those who strive to uphold the truth. Further developments rest eagerly awaited as Thanyarot seeks restitution for her unjust dismissal. -- 2024-12-12

File photo for reference only Gold’s cultural and financial significance in Thailand is receiving renewed attention as the world steps into 2025. Known traditionally in Thai culture as a symbol of wealth and prosperity, gold remains central to celebrations like weddings and birthdays, ensuring robust consumer demand. This demand has propelled Thailand ahead in the ASEAN market, marking two consecutive quarters of growth in 2024. Globally, financial inclusion is a critical objective, with gold assuming a pivotal role. Its accessibility to savings, credit, and payment systems drives economic growth and security, encouraging investments and the establishment of businesses. Thailand emerged as a strong performer in financial inclusivity, achieving a 95.6% bank account penetration by 2021, surpassing regional averages in savings and digital payments. Yet, access to credit services in Thailand lags behind, prompting a surge in informal lending, now reaching 30%. Addressing this gap, innovative measures like digitised gold trading through mobile platforms such as the Pao Tang app have been introduced. This shift to online gold trading saw a striking growth, with a 70% rise in new trading accounts reported by YLG Bullion. Gold’s role extends beyond financial mechanisms, bridging inclusion gaps in rural regions. It proves vital in supporting rural communities, often serving as collateral at pawnshops for urgent financial needs. During the 2020 pandemic, gold provided a safety net, with households selling significant quantities for financial relief. The reliability of gold as a store of value amidst global uncertainties is underscored by consumer trust, with a notable 67% viewing it as protection against inflation and currency volatility. As central banks acknowledge its importance in reinforcing balance sheets, gold's attractiveness and average returns—especially in early-year trading—remain strong. Thus, as 2025 unfolds, gold offers Thailand not just cultural continuity but a robust financial tool, reinforcing economic security and a more inclusive financial ecosystem amidst looming uncertainties. -- 2024-12-12

Motorcyclist attacks public bus with rocks, bottles in Nonthaburi By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod An unidentified man driving a white motorcycle chased and attacked a public bus with rocks and bottles in Pak Kret district, Nonthaburi province. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1346033-motorcyclist-attacks-public-bus-with-rocks-bottles-in-nonthaburi/ -
Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal An unidentified man driving a white motorcycle chased and attacked a public bus with rocks and bottles in Pak Kret district, Nonthaburi province. The event occurred yesterday, December 11, when 37 year old Kwanchai was driving the public bus on route 32 between Wat Pho and Wat Bo in Pak Kret. Alongside him was 36 year old Nattiporn who managed the fare collection. Both later reported the unsettling event to the Nonthaburi City Police Station. Kwanchai recounted the unexpected encounter while driving along Pracharat Road Line 1. As he approached the Bang Pho metro station, a young man on a motorcycle, dressed similarly to a courier, suddenly cut in front of the bus. Kwanchai maintained that he was driving normally and responsibly, particularly because the bus was fully loaded with passengers at the time. Nattiporn shared her perspective on the incident, explaining that they had made a routine stop in front of Yothinburana School to let passengers off. It was at this point that the first alarming event took place. A loud noise, resembling an object hitting the bus window, was heard. The motorcycle rider was spotted standing on the traffic island and threw a bottle at the bus. The passengers, visibly shaken, urged Kwanchai to drive on quickly, suspecting the attack might be linked to local youth conflicts. As the journey continued, the situation escalated. When the bus reached Phibulsongkram Road, the same motorcycle rider reappeared, this time wielding a rock. He dismounted his motorcycle and waited on the traffic island, targeting the driver’s side of the bus with a rock, resulting in a second assault. This time, the rock shattered the windshield but fortunately did not penetrate the vehicle. Concerned for the safety of the passengers, Nattiporn advised them to take cover on the bus floor. “I feared for the passengers’ safety, so I instructed them to lie down.” With the safety of the passengers in mind, Kwanchai decided to let them disembark midway before returning the bus to the depot. The urgency to report the incident to the police was paramount, as the possibility of further attacks was a significant concern. The unsettling events have raised questions about the motive behind the attacks, as neither Kwanchai nor Nattiporn could recall any prior incident that might have provoked such aggression. The randomness of the attack has left both the bus crew and passengers puzzled and wary. This incident sparked a discussion about passenger safety and the unpredictable nature of such violent acts. Public transportation staff often face challenges, but such direct and inexplicable hostility is particularly alarming. The bus company is now reviewing safety protocols to better protect passengers and staff in the future. Police are investigating the incident, seeking to identify the perpetrator and determine the motive behind these aggressive actions. The focus remains on ensuring the safety and security of all those who rely on public transport in the area, reported KhaoSod. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-12

Picture courtesy of KhaoSod By Bright Choomanee A couple from Chiang Rai has been apprehended by cyber police for operating an illegal online lottery and gambling website, with monthly financial transactions amounting to millions. They advertised their services via Facebook, leading to their eventual capture and subsequent legal proceedings. Today, December 12, several high-ranking officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, including Trirong Phiwpan, Wiwat Khamchanan, and Chittipon Ponprueksa, alongside other officials, coordinated a successful operation. They arrested 29 year old Supakorn, and Khwanjira at a residence in Wiang Phang Kham, Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai. The police confiscated several items, including computers, mobile phones, over 400,000 baht (US$11,824) in cash, and gold jewellery. Komson Meepakdee, a senior officer involved in the operation, revealed that the investigation began after identifying illegal sales of the Laotian lottery online. The couple advertised through Facebook pages under the name Lao Lottery Set 4 Numbers and communicated with clients via page inboxes and LINE links. This led investigators to Khwanjira’s location, which prompted them to conduct a raid where they found Supakorn managing customer inquiries and financial transactions related to online gambling. Khwanjira confessed to selling lottery tickets through online channels and Facebook page advertisements. She indicated that many customers showed interest after seeing the ads, resulting in substantial monthly cash flow. “We used social media ads to attract customers, which significantly increased our client base and monthly income.” Supakorn, on the other hand, admitted to being the administrator of the online gambling website offering a variety of services such as casinos, lotteries, and online games. He now faces charges for organising gambling activities and illegally promoting such services through electronic media without official permission, reported KhaoSod. “I managed the website and handled customer interactions, ensuring smooth operations for our online services,” Supakorn said. Both individuals have been handed over to the Mae Sai Police Station for further legal action. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-12

Phu Kradueng National Park shuts down after elephant attack By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Thai PBS Phu Kradueng National Park in Loei province has been closed indefinitely after a wild elephant attacked and killed a female tourist. The Director General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP), Atthaphon Charoenchansa, has vowed swift action to ensure safety. In a chilling revelation, the same elephant has returned to the area where the attack occurred, on the path between Phra Phuttha Metta and Namtok Phen Phop Mai, raising fears of another incident, Atthaphon said. “For safety reasons, all entrances to Phu Kradueng National Park have been temporarily closed.” Atthaphon added that wildlife experts are working to control and push the elephant away from the tourist zones. This marks the first recorded incident of a wild elephant attack in Phu Kradueng, and officials are taking no chances. Currently, one of 10 elephants in the area has ventured into tourist zones. If pushing the animal out proves ineffective, park officials may resort to setting up pens in remote locations to manage the elephants far from visitors. Meanwhile, over 500 tourists remain stranded on the mountain. Rescue efforts are underway, with 279 individuals already escorted down to safety. The DNP director plans to oversee the operation personally by December 16. Tourists who planned trips to the park are being offered compensation. Officials are urging visitors to stay away until the situation is declared safe, reported Thai PBS. Phu Kradueng, a popular hiking destination, is famed for its waterfalls and panoramic views. However, this incident underscores the delicate balance between wildlife conservation and tourist safety. Until the rogue elephant is managed, Thailand’s beloved national park will remain off-limits. Kampee, aged 25, Jittipong, 28, and 22-year-old Chunchaisak found themselves in legal hot water after their late-night antics were uploaded online, capturing the attention of law enforcement. The video showed thrilling, yet perilous wheelies and manoeuvres on a blue BMW S 1000 RR, dangerous displays that quickly gathered substantial views across social media platforms. Police quickly identified the vehicles involved through CCTV and tasked officers Siam Boonsom, Thawat Wongsonga, and Surachet Bundit with apprehending the trio. Their actions - flaunted in front of a burgeoning online audience on platforms like TikTok and their Facebook group 'Lun Don', which boasts 140,000 members - drew public ire and official scrutiny. Upon arrest, the young men faced several charges including reckless and dangerous driving, and Kampee faced further charges for promoting this behaviour online. Their court appearance in Don Mueang led to suspended sentences for all involved, alongside fines and the confiscation of their luxury motorcycles - a stern reminder of the law's reach. The Royal Thai Police emphasised their commitment to halting reckless driving practices, reaffirming the severe legal repercussions awaiting those who partake or encourage such activities. The case serves as a high-profile warning to others engaging in or endorsing illegal street racing or stunts. -- 2024-12-12 -
