  1. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal A young man swallowed his mother’s psychiatric medication, leading to a violent episode where he bound and assaulted his girlfriend. Police intervened to rescue the woman from their home in Nonthaburi, revealing shocking details about the incident. Sakson, an officer from the Bang Si Mueang Police Station in Nonthaburi, responded to a report yesterday, December 16 at approximately 4pm of a woman being held and assaulted by her boyfriend inside a house located in the Wat Pa Rerai community. Officers arrived at the scene, a two-storey half-wooden half-concrete house, to find the doors and windows tightly shut. After several attempts to call out to those inside, a 27 year old man eventually opened the door to meet the officers. He led them inside, where they encountered a 34 year old woman, known as Pon, emerging from the downstairs bathroom, visibly trembling with fear and her eyes swollen from crying. Despite her appearance, Porn insisted to the police that she had not been harmed by her boyfriend, prompting further questioning to uncover the truth. The man denied any assault on his girlfriend, attributing their frequent arguments to his jealousy and unfounded suspicions of her infidelity. He claimed that although they often had heated arguments, he never resorted to physically harming her but admitted to self-harm. Pon shared that they had been in a relationship for about three years, during which she had frequently suffered abuse, especially when her boyfriend consumed his mother’s psychiatric medication. The medication induced hallucinations in him, which did not occur when he abstained from taking it. Accusations of infidelity The previous night, Pon’s boyfriend accused her of secretly leaving to meet another man, likely under the influence of the medication, leading to another argument. Despite not having left the house, Pon was coerced to confess, resulting in her boyfriend slapping her and cutting her with a knife. To calm him, she reluctantly allowed him to tie her wrists together. Pon further expressed that the man’s hallucinations and violent behaviour were recurring issues whenever he took the medication. He had even harmed himself by cutting his head with a knife in her presence, frightening her considerably. Following the incident, she contacted her uncle for assistance, hoping to move in with him as she no longer felt safe staying with her boyfriend. She feared his violent outbursts might escalate, and she was genuinely scared for her safety. She expressed her intention to never return to the house, acknowledging the police’s help in rescuing her, reported KhaoSod. The police proceeded to take the man for a drug test at the station while Pon was entrusted to her uncle, who would take her to his home. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-17

Police apologise with 10 sit-ups after cop fires gun outside Bangkok nightclub Photo via DailyNews By Petch Petpailin All 140 officers at Thong Lo Police Station performed 10 sit-ups today, December 17, as an apology after an officer fired a gun into the sky outside a nightclub on Soi Thong Lo 10 in Bangkok on Saturday, December 14. Police Sergeant Major Montri Meedate brought embarrassment and disgrace to Thong Lo Police Station last Saturday night. He was caught in a viral video engaging in a heated argument with a nightclub security guard, threatening him with a gun, and subsequently firing a shot into the sky outside the venue. Montri’s actions stemmed from anger after being denied entry to the nightclub because he caused a disturbance and displayed unruly behaviour while intoxicated. Montri’s superior, Thong Lo Police Station Superintendent Phansa Amaraphithak came forward to accept responsibility for his subordinate’s misconduct. He reported that Montri is temporarily suspended from government service pending an investigation into his actions. Phansa held an outdoor meeting with the station’s 140 police officers today. He stressed the importance of the proper use of firearms and the responsible consumption of alcohol. Twelve rules regarding firearm usage were printed and distributed to each officer, along with the disadvantages of alcohol consumption. As a gesture of apology, Phansa ordered all officers, including himself, to perform 10 sit-ups. Following the exercise, the officers shared a meal to demonstrate their unity and camaraderie. According to a report by DailyNews, Montri was released on bail on the evening of December 16, with bail set at 150,000 baht. Montri is now facing four charges including: Section 7 of the Act on Firearms, Ammunition, Explosive, Fireworks, and Imitation Firearm: possessing a gun without permission. Picture courtesy of Eakkapop Thongtub By Bright Choomanee Phuket police are on the hunt for an Uzbek national accused of attempting to exchange counterfeit US dollars at a currency exchange shop in Cherng Talay. The incident took place at the Ai-Tem Money Exchange kiosk near the entrance to the Laguna complex on December 14, with the report filed later that day. Shop employee Dechawanit Sama-kas recounted that three foreign men entered the establishment around 2.50pm. Among them, a 37 year old Uzbek identified as Muzaffar Nishanov presented four US$100 bills for exchange into Thai baht and handed over his passport for verification. Upon inspection, Dechawanit noticed the bills were counterfeit. After being informed of this discovery, Nishanov reportedly became agitated and demanded the return of the counterfeit money. “He was upset when I told him the bills were fake, and he insisted on getting them back.” The situation intensified when Dechawanit mentioned he would contact the police. In response, Nishanov and his two companions made a hasty exit from the premises. Cherng Talay Police were alerted to the incident at 4.22pm on December 14. They have since initiated an investigation to locate Nishanov and his associates, promising legal action once they are apprehended, reported Phuket News. “We are actively pursuing the individuals involved and will take appropriate legal measures upon their capture,” the police confirmed. 7. File photo for reference only In a decisive ruling, the Supreme Administrative Court has rejected an appeal by former Deputy Police Commissioner Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, affirming the legitimacy of his dismissal from the police force over charges of malfeasance. Surachate had argued that his removal, supported by the police commissioner general, the police good governance protection committee, and the prime minister, should be halted pending his trial. Despite his efforts, the court found no grounds to delay the dismissal order, thereby upholding the actions taken by the authorities. This decision doesn't just affect Surachate; seven additional officers associated with him have similarly been dismissed. These officers, including Surachate, have already been implicated in serious disciplinary breaches linked to the MBK online gambling website. With the court backing the dismissal, this case underscores the gravity of corruption charges within Thailand's law enforcement ranks, pushing forward the narrative of accountability and integrity within the sector. -- 2024-12-16

Excise Department to Revamp Retail Prices for Higher Tax Revenue File photo for reference only The Excise Department plans to update the recommended retail prices used to calculate excise taxes. 13. File photo for reference only The Excise Department plans to update the recommended retail prices used to calculate excise taxes. Many current product prices are 5% to 10% lower than actual selling prices. A department source revealed that low recommended prices reduce government revenue. The department collects 500 to 600 billion baht annually. Raising retail prices by 5% could increase government revenue by 20 to 30 billion baht. The review will focus on high-value items like cars, especially those from the grey market, which often have prices 5% to 15% below their true value. In 2017, the department shifted the tax calculation basis from ex-factory or CIF prices to recommended retail prices, excluding VAT. If these prices don't reflect actual values, the director-general can set a new price for tax calculations based on sales or import prices, following ministerial regulations. The department will use prices from major sales venues like modern trade stores as benchmarks to ensure market relevance. Recommended retail prices should include production costs, management expenses, and profit margins, and must not be below regular market consumer prices. This change aims to prevent vendors from setting unrealistically low prices, which harm revenue. Recommended retail prices are seen as more accurate market indicators compared to ex-factory or CIF prices. -- 2024-12-16

  15. Picture courtesy of Elena Shamis By Bob Scott Phuket International Airport is facing a social media storm after using a photo of Singapore’s iconic Peranakan Houses to promote the island, leaving locals scratching their heads and critics raising eyebrows. Facebook user Ejijum Phuket didn’t hold back, spotlighting the public relations gaffe on his page, today, December 16. He shared a post about a friend’s perplexed inquiry after spotting the misplaced image upon landing at Phuket Airport. “I’m so embarrassed. My friend arrived at Phuket Airport and sent me this picture asking where it was so he could take a picture. Oh, gosh! I’m so confused. Is this building in Lod Chong City? (Singapore). What’s with the confusion? “Our houses are beautiful, full of mansions, and lots of shophouses on Thalang Road. Why didn’t you do that? You used your friend’s house to promote Phuket. What the hell! “Are you embarrassing yourself? You’re so smart. Please take it down. You’re embarrassing yourself.” Channel 3 Plus News reported his post quickly went viral, with an avalanche of comments following suit. Some poked fun at the oversight. “He probably thinks that all the pictures are the same. So he won’t take any more pictures. He’ll definitely copy pictures from the Internet and print them out.” The blunder has become the talk of the town, as residents rally for a correction and a celebration of Phuket’s true local charm, insisting that the gorgeous mansions and bustling shophouses of Thalang Road would surely do the trick. 17. Photo via Bright TV By Petch Petpailin A 23 year old man lost his life in a stabbing outside a condominium on Rama II Soi 54 in the Bang Khun Thian district of Bangkok following a traffic dispute with a suspect who remains at large. A witness reported the death of the 23 year old Thai man, named Apiwit, outside the condominium, at Tha Kham Police Station at around 11.10pm last night, December 15. Apiwit was found lying in a pool of blood. He was wearing a black long-sleeved hoodie over a black T-shirt and long jeans. Apiwit sustained a fatal stab wound to his chest and had scratches on his left cheek. A medical team and rescuers attempted to resuscitate him with CPR but their efforts were unsuccessful. The witness informed police that the deceased victim was a resident of the condominium. He parked his motorcycle at the scene and engaged in a heated argument with another motorcyclist and his girlfriend. The dispute reportedly began before arriving at the scene, as the two parties cut in front of each other while riding. The argument escalated into a physical altercation between Apiwit and the motorcyclist while the woman tried to separate them. Before fleeing, the motorcyclist stabbed Apiwit in the chest and sped away. Apiwit initially did not realise he was stabbed and walked into the condominium as usual. However, he collapsed on the ground shortly after and lost consciousness, later succumbing to his injuries. Police are currently reviewing security camera footage from the condominium and surrounding areas to identify and apprehend the perpetrator. Apiwit’s body will undergo an autopsy before being returned to his family for the funeral. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-16
  18. Living the Thai life: Kingdom rolls out red carpet for big spenders By Bob Scott Picture courtesy of Feel Free Travel Thailand is upping the ante in its tourism game, spotlighting the allure of luxury and high-spending travellers to power up the economy post-pandemic. 19. Picture courtesy of Feel Free Travel By Bob Scott Thailand is upping the ante in its tourism game, spotlighting the allure of luxury and high-spending travellers to power up the economy post-pandemic. Known for its warm hospitality, stunning landscapes, and world-class attractions, the nation is seeing a surge in plush hotels and branded properties to cater to this elite crowd. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) set its sights on affluent tourists, primarily professionals earning over US$60,000 (2.05 million baht) annually. These big spenders splash out more than 6,000-7,000 baht daily, far surpassing the average tourist spend of 4,200 baht per day or 120,000 baht per trip. This exclusive club is largely made up of couples, families, and LGBTQ visitors. TAT’s Deputy Governor for Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas, Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, revealed that these segments contributed a hefty 40-50% of last year’s 2 trillion baht in tourism revenue. However, while basking in success, private sector voices are urging the government to tackle infrastructure and supply chain issues to sustain the competitive edge in luxury travel. The US and South America have been identified as growing sources of luxury travellers looking for extended stays, while China, Australia, and New Zealand remain key short-haul markets, said Siripakorn. “We’re promoting Thailand as an affordable luxury destination with exclusive experiences under budget, unmatched by other hotspots.” Siripakorn also noted the impact of Michelin-approved eateries elevating the fine dining scene for luxe tourists. “Many tourists have saved for years to create magical moments in Thailand.” A focus on sustainable activities is driving luxury tourists towards responsible travel experiences, a trend gaining traction globally. To lure even more premium tourists, TAT is teaming up with US luxury travel advisor Virtuoso and discussing a chic new city guidebook with Louis Vuitton for the upscale European market. Plans are also afoot to make waves at the International Luxury Travel Mart in France. In the world of luxe retail, Central Retail Corporation Plc (CRC)’s Piyawan Leelasompop sees huge potential in Thailand’s world-class shopping centres. A boost in luxury sales, particularly from Middle Eastern shoppers, hints at Thailand’s potential as a leading luxury tourism hub. Yet, with stiff competition from Hong Kong and Singapore due to their lower import taxes, Piyawan advocates for tax cuts to woo more international tourists and keep locals shopping at home. With an ambitious target of welcoming 9 million Chinese tourists next year, a resurgence in Chinese luxury shoppers, previously top consumers before the pandemic, is on the horizon. Economic shifts, including Beijing’s push for domestic spending and anticipated US tariff hikes on Chinese goods, remain pivotal factors, says Piyawan. The luxury travel sector also finds promise in wellness offerings. Bill Barnett, Managing Director of C9 Hotelworks, noted Thailand’s wellness economy ranked 24th globally in 2022, with 22.4% of its 1.2 trillion baht market stemming from wellness tourism. Phuket, in particular, shines as a wellness beacon, offering holistic health programmes and housing international hospitals and resorts. Krabi, famous for its natural allure and upscale hotels, presents additional opportunities to attract luxury guests. Chamnan Srisawat, President of the Tourism Council of Thailand, is investing in a cutting-edge wellness centre in Krabi and planning to expand his fleet of boats for premium tourist services. Despite these sunny prospects, challenges loom. Siripakorn highlights the need for stronger tourism infrastructure, including enhanced safety, cleanliness, and language skills among workers. Chamnan echoes this, noting that while private operators are raring to deliver luxury, public amenities often lag behind. Taking cues from Japan’s impeccably designed facilities and stellar service could be the golden key to boosting Thailand’s pull with the luxury set. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-16

Photo: The Thaiger A sense of relief washes over commuters as traffic returns to normal on Thailand's Rama II Road, following a tragic crane accident that resulted in six fatalities and nine injuries. The incident occurred during the early hours of 29th November at the Ekkachai-Ban Phaeo Intercity Motorway 82 site in Samut Sakhon, causing significant disruption. Swift action was taken by various agencies to clear the scene, leading to the reopening of both inbound and outbound lanes in just 14 days. Apirat Chaiwongnoi from the Department of Highways assured the public of the road’s safety and thanked the commuters for their patience. Rama II Road is a crucial route linking Bangkok with the south, extending about 84 kilometres. Despite its vital importance, the road’s history is tarnished with multiple accidents, underscoring the perils of large-scale infrastructure development. Professor Amorn Pimanmas, head of the Thailand Structural Engineers Association, stressed the need for stringent examination of construction practices, especially those involving complex systems like sliding steel trusses. He called for legislative measures requiring comprehensive training and licensing for workers and engineers alike. The Transport Ministry’s investigation into the recent accident is ongoing. Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has stressed the importance of rigorous contractor assessments, with stringent penalties and potential bans for those violating safety standards. -- 2024-12-16

This ongoing deluge has submersed key city areas, crippling transport and forcing businesses to halt operations. For several days, relentless rainfall has inundated the city, overwhelming both infrastructure and residents. Despite a brief lull yesterday morning, December 15th, the rain resumed forcefully, worsening the already dire situation. Floodwaters of up to 70 centimetres now engulf Pattanakarn-Kukwang Road, a vital economic artery, halting vehicle traffic and business activities. Emergency services have scrambled to protect facilities like Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital, where water levels rise alarmingly. Even arterial roads like Route 401 and nearby access routes are swamped, leaving only large trucks to pass. Authorities remain vigilant as forecasts predict more rain, prompting provincial warnings and urging residents to stay informed and cautious. With dark clouds lingering, Nakhon Si Thammarat braces for further challenges, hoping for a break in the weather soon. -- 2024-12-16

  25. File photo for reference only In a major breakthrough, Thai police arrested two individuals in Pathum Thani, uncovering 483 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine intended for international transit. The arrests are a significant step in Thailand's ongoing struggle against drug trafficking, coordinated under the Royal Thai Army's directive, led by Commander Pana Klaewplodthuk. The successful operation unfolded following intelligence reports that linked a network of traffickers in southern Thailand to a substantial drug shipment. This pivotal raid was executed by the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, with assistance from military intelligence and law enforcement, culminating in the detention of Manoch, aged 33, and Thanaporn, aged 30. The duo revealed plans to transport the illegal cargo to the south in exchange for a sizeable payment of 1 million baht. Thailand, a pivotal point in the notorious Golden Triangle drug route, frequently intercepts transits of illicit substances like methamphetamine, heroin, and ketamine, bound for regions as far as Australia and Hong Kong. The suspects now face severe charges that could lead to heavy penalties, a warning shot across the bow for trafficking networks. Legal proceedings are underway as the accused remain in custody at Thung Song Hong Police Station. -- 2024-12-16
