  1. The sudden death of a British man from Sunderland has left his family reeling, both emotionally and financially. Alan Carr Bryan, a well-known Sunderland local nicknamed “The Bear” passed away at his hotel in Pattaya on July 28, prompting his daughter, Abigail Ilsley, and stepdaughter, Natalie Parish, to travel to Thailand for his funeral and to settle his affairs. Despite his prior travel insurance, Bryan unknowingly overstayed his coverage, leaving his family with an unexpected financial burden of approximately £6,000 (around 270,000 baht). Bryan’s ex-wife, Julie Robertson, mother to Abigail, described their ongoing relationship. “I am his ex-wife, but we had been in touch constantly through our daughter. We were still friends; we had always been friends. He used to phone me from Thailand and introduce me as his wife. I would say, ‘We have been divorced for 24 years’.” The family’s concern grew when Bryan abruptly ceased communication. “He was supposed to be in contact with us, but we could not get hold of him. His phone was just ringing, his Thai phone was just ringing – then one of his friends told us he had found him in his hotel room and he had passed away.” Ilsley and Parish are staying with a friend of Bryan’s in Pattaya but are still facing a steep bill for travel, funeral, and paperwork costs. Robertson has set up a GoFundMe page to help with the expenses. “We have raised about £2,100, but it was four grand just for the flight.” The 71 year old man was a beloved figure in Sunderland, renowned for his size and athletic prowess, earning him the nickname “The Bear.” He attended Red House Comprehensive and was the top shot putter in the country at 15. Bryan also played rugby for Belford House and football for various teams. He worked as a bus driver and bouncer in the city centre. A cremation ceremony has already taken place in Thailand, and a memorial service will be arranged later, reported Sunderland Echo. 3. A careless pickup truck driver struck a student walking across a zebra crossing in front of a school, causing him to be thrown onto the road. This incident was captured on a TikTok video posted by user @boonlertkhunkham yesterday, August 15. The video reveals the shocking accident that occurred on August 6. A group of students were standing by the roadside, preparing to cross the zebra crossing. As the road began to clear, an individual stepped forward to signal vehicles to stop, allowing the students to cross safely. However, a pickup truck approached the crossing at speed and collided with one of several students crossing, one of which was flung onto the road, sustaining injuries. The driver immediately braked and exited the vehicle to check on the injured student. “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. One moment the students were waiting to cross, and the next, a truck came out of nowhere and hit one of them.” The careless driver’s actions following the accident were captured in the video. The driver appeared visibly shaken as they ran to assist the injured student. The clip, shared widely on TikTok, sparked a wave of reactions, with many viewers expressing their concern and outrage over the driver’s apparent lack of attention. “This is a clear example of why it’s crucial for drivers to be vigilant around school zones. Children’s safety should always come first.” Local police have since been involved, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the accident. The driver of the pickup truck may face charges pending the investigation’s outcome. The incident has reignited discussions about road safety, particularly around schools, and the necessity for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to protect pedestrians. “We need better measures to ensure the safety of our children. This could have been much worse, and it’s a wake-up call for everyone.” The injured student is currently receiving medical care, and their condition is being closely monitored. The school has issued a statement expressing their concern and commitment to supporting the student and their family during this difficult time. They have also called for increased awareness and caution from all road users, reported KhaoSod. 5. An elderly man was seen dragging a dog along a village road in Thailand, prompting a quick response from rescue teams. The man claimed he was taking the injured dog to the vet but couldn’t carry it, so he used a rope to drag it. The Siam Ruamjai Poo-In Rescue Unit received a report from a concerned citizen who witnessed an elderly man dragging a dog with a rope tied around its neck along a village road. The rescue team immediately went to investigate and offer assistance. Upon arrival, 26 year old Achiraya recounted that she had driven by and seen the elderly man dragging the dog, which was yelping in pain. Fearing that the situation could escalate as the man was also carrying a hoe, she called the rescue team. The team searched for the dog and found it hiding in some bushes about 10 metres from the concrete road. The elderly man, 70 year old Sakard approached the rescue unit and explained that the dog, a stray female he called Ja Dang, was usually fed by him. Recently, however, the dog had started to chase and bite people who were exercising in the area, so he decided to leash it to prevent further incidents. When he found Ja Dang lying motionless by the roadside about 100 metres from his house, with injuries around its genital area and bruises on its body, he decided to take the dog home to care for it. Lacking assistance and unable to carry the dog on his own, he resorted to using a rope to drag it. Unfortunately, the dog managed to escape during the process, leading to the rescue team’s intervention. The rescue team agreed to take the dog for medical treatment but required someone to cover the expenses. Achiraya volunteered to pay for the dog’s treatment. Initial examinations by the vet suggested that the dog might have a genital infection, possibly contracted from another animal, and some of the injuries seemed to be inflicted by a human. The facial injuries were likely caused by being dragged along the road, reported KhaoSod. 6. Prawit punchline: PPP leader faces prison after journalist assault - video Photo via MGR Online Palang Pracharath Party leader Prawit Wongsuwan faces an assault charge after he lashed out in anger towards a Thai journalist after being questioned about the new Prime Minister of Thailand. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335696-prawit-punchline-ppp-leader-faces-prison-after-journalist-assault-video/
  7. Palang Pracharath Party leader Prawit Wongsuwan faces an assault charge after he lashed out in anger towards a Thai journalist after being questioned about the new Prime Minister of Thailand. The parliamentary meeting to select a new PM following the removal of ex-PM Srettha Thavisin began at around 10am today, August 16. At the end of the meeting, the leader of the Pheu Thai Party, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, secured 319 votes from Parliament members and became the new PM of Thailand. Despite the significance of the meeting, Prawit chose not to attend and instead opted to meet Thai athletes who just returned from the Paris Olympics. At the end of the welcoming event with the athletes, numerous Thai journalists approached Prawit for an interview, inquiring about his meeting with the Olympic contenders and his views on Paetongtarn becoming the 31st Thai Prime Minister. Regarding his discussion with the athletes, Prawit shared that he encouraged them to secure even more medals for Thailand, despite the country already having achieved its highest medal count ever. Prawit also expressed his desire to inspire more young people to engage in sports, regardless of discipline, to enhance the nation’s reputation and bring joy to the Thai people. Angry Prawit An unexpected moment occurred when a female journalist asked Prawit whether he had watched the live broadcast of the prime ministerial selection. Instead of answering, Prawit lashed out in anger. “What? What? What are you asking? Asking who?” Unexpectedly, Prawit raised his hand towards the journalist and struck her. His bodyguards quickly rushed him to the car. Prawit shouted at the journalist before leaving. “What were you asking? I didn’t hear that.” The journalist repeated her question but Prawit continued to avoid answering. He expressed his irritation loudly as his car was leaving. Some news agencies reported that the journalist was struck on the head, while others said she was hit on the arm. Prawit’s absence from the PM selection meeting today is suspected to be related to a recent conflict between the two parties. The issue stems from the recent election for the governor of Pathum Thani province, where the Pheu Thai Party representative, Charn Puangphet, won. However, MPs from the Pheu Thai Party, Wan and Chalerm Ubumrung, encouraged Charn’s rival, the independent candidate, Khamronwit “Big Jezz” Thupkrajang. This led to complaints against the two MPs by the party leader, Paetongtarn. Following the conflict, Wan decided to move to the Palang Pracharath Party, while his father, Chalerm, chose not to attend the PM selection today. In regards to Prawit’s attack on the journalist, the politician faces severe consequences if the reporter in question files a police complaint. The 79 year old, if found guilty, may face imprisonment of up to two years and/or a fine of up to 4,000 baht. 9. A businessman was victim to a theft carried out by a transgender woman he'd met at a hotel. The thief tried to sell the stolen car online but was thwarted by the police. Earlier today, August 15, a 42-year-old businessman, Gorn, identified his black Suzuki Swift at the Nonthaburi City Police Station. The car had been stolen by a 28-year-old transgender woman, Pink, on August 13, according to CCTV footage. The car was found outside a convenience store in the Huai Khwang district of Bangkok. The video footage records Pink leaving a hotel room and making a call outside at 8:14pm. By 8:30pm, Gorn's black Suzuki Swift is seen leaving the hotel premises. More CCTV footage shows the car leaving a local road in Nonthaburi. After spending the day with Pink, Gorn woke up the next morning at 3am to realize his car, an iPhone 12 Pro Max, a Xiaomi phone, and a Tag Heuer watch were all missing. He was informed by the hotel staff that Pink had left with a man, which led Gorn to report the theft to the police. Officer Tharathip Pengkham and his team reviewed the CCTV footage of Pink making a call in a white outfit outside the hotel at 8:19pm, roughly the same time the car was seen leaving. The police discovered Pink had listed the stolen car on social media. They planned to arrest Pink by setting up a meeting at a convenience store in Bangkok, but upon arriving, they only found the car with the keys still in it. It's suspected that Pink got wind of the plan and abandoned the vehicle. Gorn shared that he'd met Pink at the hotel around lunchtime. They had lunch and talked before spending the night together. When he woke up at 3am, Pink and his belongings were gone. Based on their initial investigation, police are collaborating with the Nonthaburi City Police's investigative unit to issue a warrant for Pink's arrest. They believe Pink might not have pulled off this heist alone and are conducting inquiries to apprehend her and any potential accomplices. 11. Emergency personnel from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation responded to a bus and ambulance accident at Din Daeng Island, Victory Monument, Bangkok which left several people injured. At the accident scene, a Route 36 bus was found overturned next to an ambulance. Multiple casualties were on the ground, waiting for help from rescue workers. Among the injured were Renu Maktong, 68, and her daughter, Kamai Maktong, 33, a Senior Sergeant Major from Bang Pho Police Station. Renu explained that they had initially intended to take the bus when her daughter's chest pain, due to arrhythmia, worsened. As a result, they used an Erawan emergency ambulance service. The ambulance staff gave Kamai comprehensive care throughout the journey, including an EKG and saline drip. An accident happened suddenly while they were rounding a curve. Renu, sitting at the back, watched in horror as her daughter's stretcher lurched to one side. Despite a metal frame pinning her and a head injury, Renu was primarily concerned about Kamai's safety, fearing the worst after the vehicle flipped over. After being rescued from the wreckage, Renu begged responders to attend to her daughter first, despite her own broken leg. Back in the hospital, a CT scan revealed Renu's leg fracture, while Kamai had a head injury, chest discomfort, and various aches. Kamai later found out that her mother needed surgery for the fracture and felt terrible for causing her injury. She said, "I feel very guilty and upset for causing my mother to be hurt. During the accident, I could hardly hear my mother, and now knowing she has a broken leg just makes me feel worse.” Renu stated that the Erawan Centre would cover their medical expenses and she didn't want to sue anybody, expressing that she only wanted both of them to recover fully. She felt guilty for calling the ambulance that eventually got involved in the accident. The director of the fourth bus route district, together with other officials and the bus driver Somsak Ngamsompol, visited Renu and Kamai to express sympathy and provide financial assistance. Somsak apologized to both mother and daughter, who forgave him, recognizing it was an unfortunate accident. On August 14, Pattaya Tourist Police received a tip-off about a South Korean man entering Thailand. This man, identified as Kim Jinjong, had travelled from a nearby country. Further investigations revealed that Jinjong was residing in a village in Pattaya's Bang Lamung district. Upon raiding his house, the tourist police found Jinjong inside. He admitted to entering Thailand unlawfully through a forest in the Isaan region's Sa Kaeo province. A search of the house resulted in the discovery of various illegal drugs. These included 1.5 grams of crystal meth, 0.4 grams of ecstasy, and some drug-related equipment. Jinjong took the officers to his condo in Pattaya, but no illegal items were found there. According to the police report, in 2015, Jinjong overstayed his visa by about five years, or 1,864 days, which placed him on a blacklist and barred him from re-entering Thailand till December 27, 2029. Jinjong violated this ban. He will be prosecuted for two main legal offenses. As per Section 81 of the Immigration Act, he lived in Thailand after his visa expired. Consequently, he will be extradited to South Korea to face additional charges for money laundering. As per Section 145 of the Narcotics Control Act, he possessed a Category 1 drug. 15. Pattaya police have begun investigating local hardware stores and their stock of construction materials. The move is aimed at identifying the presence of dangerous chemicals and educating the public on how to use them safely. This follows the tragic incident where a mother and her two children died from toxic gases produced by a drain cleaner. Police Colonel Navin Theerawit, the Chief of Pattaya City Police, has assigned Police Captain Apinan Boonyarat to lead the special operations team in this investigation. Yesterday, on August 14, the team inspected two main stores in Pattaya at 3:30 pm. The goal was to locate any potentially harmful chemicals and promote safety awareness. The initiative was triggered by the fatal incident in Chon Buri province, involving a drain cleaner that released toxic gases. Suthep, the 67-year-old proprietor of Charoenphong Hardware, stated that his store includes user instructions with every drain cleaner purchase. He stressed the need to have a container of clean water on hand to rinse off the chemical promptly if it touches the skin. He said, "This chemical is a strong acid and we advise against mixing it with other chemicals. When using it, make sure doors and windows are open for ventilation and don't use large amounts of alkaline (caustic soda) cleaners often sold online.” At another busy store, Pattaya Klang Hardware, the owner, Jan, noted that their drain cleaners come from reputable companies and comply with safety standards and traceability of production. Jan said, “Most of our customers are professional maintenance workers who know how to use these products correctly. However, if a regular customer, like a housekeeper, buys the cleaner, we give them detailed instructions and underscore the importance of correct usage." The police are now focusing their efforts on preventing similar incidents. They aim to ensure that stores not only sell these products in a responsible manner but also teach buyers how to use them safely. The two suspects, 31-year-old Suriyen and 25-year-old Sitthipong, were captured as they tried to evade the police. The operation was overseen by Surat Thani Governor Jetsada Jitrat, who also serves as the Director of the Provincial Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC). Colonel Thitipong Inwasa, the Deputy Commander of the 45th Military Circle and Deputy Director of ISOC Surat Thani, teamed up with Regional 8 Police investigators to execute the arrests. Police had received a tip about a planned drug transfer on Southern Road in the Kanchanadit district. As a result, they set up a surveillance operation. It wasn't long before they spotted the suspects' black Toyota pickup truck parked on the street, its hazard lights blinking. When the police tried to arrest them, the driver, Suriyen, attempted to escape, resulting in a car chase. Police shot at the vehicle's tires, causing them to burst, which led to the suspects' capture. Sitthipong was apprehended while trying to run away. 21. In a disturbing incident in Udon Thani, a man attacked his father after his request for 300 baht for drugs was denied. This violent act led his sister to ask authorities to take legal action, expressing her desire to disown him. Udon Thani police received reports of a son assaulting his father at a rented house in Nong Bua, Mueang district. Responding to the call, officers arrived at the scene promptly. The aggressor, a 30 year-old man named Panya, confessed to attacking his father under the influence of alcohol and cannabis. Panya flew into a rage when his father declined his request for 300 baht, attacking him with a knife and even hurling a charcoal stove at him. Panya was apprehended on the spot and the police initiated legal proceedings against him on assault charges. Panya's 54-year-old father, Angkul, emotionally recounted the episode to the media, stating that his son had spent the whole day consuming alcohol and cannabis. When he didn't receive the money he asked for, Panya demanded 300 baht and the use of a motorcycle from his sister. Angkul not agreeing to his son's request mentioned that Panya was unemployed, spent all day drinking and that the motorcycle was required to pick up his grandchildren. "We had an intense argument before he took a knife and assaulted me. He repeatedly kicked and punched me and even threw a charcoal stove at me, injuring my ear. I am requesting the police to put him behind bars for good," Angkul said. Panya's sister confirmed her brother's violent actions, stating that he often abused drugs and alcohol. She narrated that upon his request for money to buy methamphetamine being denied, he went on a destructive spree, damaging items in the house and injuring their father. "He requested money for drugs, and when he didn't receive any, he went on a rampage, hurting our father and damaging items in our home. I am extremely angered to have a brother who behaves like this. I hope the police take him away for good," she said. Upon arriving at the scene, the police found the injured man, Chalao, 53, sitting with his wounded leg. A medical team from Khon Kaen Hospital was summoned to the site to take Chalao to the hospital. No updates about his condition were given. The person behind the shooting was identified as Pawinyo, 32, Chalao’s son who escaped after the incident. Pawinyo's friend, Kim, revealed to the police that Pawinyo had been at odds with his father. Kim further shared he advised Pawinyo to solve the problem peacefully just before Chalao showed up with a gun. As told by Kim, Chalao aimed his gun at Pawinyo immediately after alighting from his car, causing Pawinyo to react by firing back at his father, hitting him on the leg. According to the police, the rift between the father and son was because of a 1 million baht loan that Pawinyo’s elder sister took from her brother, and had long delayed in returning it, despite Pawinyo’s constant reminders. To express his frustration, Pawinyo went public about his sister's debt on social media, which angered Chalao. Chalao found it inappropriate that Pawinyo had exposed the family dispute to the public and asked him to delete the post, but he refused. It was revealed that Pawinyo later turned himself in and was released temporarily. However, the police have not charged the shooter with any formal legal charges yet. 25. A woman from Thailand faced harsh criticism online after posting a request for someone to transport her additional luggage to Japan for a fee. The incident occurred when she made the unusual request on Facebook in a group called 'Japan Travel Group'. After receiving many negative comments, the post was eventually removed. The woman, heading to Tokyo on a China Eastern Airline flight on August 22, asked if someone had spare luggage space in which to carry her extra bag, weighing up to 23 kilograms, following airline requirements. She explained that she had over-shopped and her two bags weren't big enough to hold all her items. The post read as follows: "Does anybody flying to Tokyo on the 22nd with China Eastern Airline have extra luggage space? I need to check in another bag, up to 23 kilograms, and I'm willing to pay 2,000 baht for assistance. I'll pick up the bag myself at our destination. Please let me know and I'll get in touch. Thank you." Many people reacted negatively to her post, which led her to remove it. Critics argued that it would be easier and more sensible for her to simply pay for additional baggage capacity. Some commenters underscored the dangers associated with agreeing to transport another person's luggage, referencing cases where Thai people found themselves imprisoned in foreign countries due to unknowingly transporting prohibited goods for others. These remarks sparked speculations about the woman's reluctance to buy extra luggage capacity. According to the KhaoSod, some suggested she might be avoiding this option due to something questionable. One comment read: "Why not just buy extra baggage capacity? It's safer and makes more sense. Agreeing to carry a stranger's bag is risky." Another said: "Many Thais have ended up in prison overseas because they agreed to carry bags for other people. It's not worth the gamble." As of now, China Eastern Airlines hasn't released any statement concerning the incident, and the woman failed to respond to the remarks from the online community.
