  1. The government has given the green light for a 433 million baht fund for the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. This money will be used to promote tourism during the off-peak months through digital campaigns and events. This initiative is being led by the Thailand Tourism Authority (TAT) which hopes to raise revenues from homegrown tourism by 20% to 1.2 trillion baht this year. This move is aimed at making Thailand less reliant on international tourists. Tourism Minister Sermsak Pongpanit has outlined two main plans under the “The Charm of Thai” campaign. These plans aim to promote travel within Thailand's five regions and encourage both locals and international tourists to stay longer. The first plan, which has a budget of 280 million baht, will work with online travel agencies like Agoda and TripAdvisor to offer tour packages in August and September. This is expected to generate 2.8 billion baht in sales and attract 185,000 visitors. The second plan will promote local festivals and events in September, encouraging spending in major and growing cities. Events such as the Chiang Mai Art and Music Festival and the Chon Buri International Music Festival are expected to bring in about 750 million baht. By 2025, TAT is aiming for a 7.5% revenue growth centered on domestic tourism to reduce risks from global uncertainties. Even though the goal of 205 million domestic trips is lower than the previous 220 million, TAT is positive that strategic promotions and partnerships will help achieve higher figures and revenue, reported The Pattaya News. 3. Tour Company Faces Legal Action for Cave Incident Surat Thani (NNT) - Surat Thani Governor Jessada Jitrat has mandated legal action against a tour company that led a group into the closed Nam Talu Cave within Khao Sok National Park, resulting in a tragic flash flood that killed a 37-year-old guide. The incident, which involved two guides and 22 foreign tourists, unfolded as they were exiting the cave, which is situated in the Ratchaprapa Dam reservoir area. Following the ordeal, the tourists briefly met with Governor Jessada and other officials at the Chiew Lan Subdistrict Municipality Tourist Pier before spending the night at the park's Krai Sorn Raft House. The incident mirrors a similar catastrophe that occurred in the same location a decade ago. Nam Talu Cave was under an official closure, part of a seasonal shutdown spanning from June 1 to November 30 to protect natural resources and ensure public safety. Park authorities said that the tour company violated this closure order by accessing the cave, which is designated solely for trekking. According to Jessada, immediate steps are to be taken to enforce park closures more stringently to prevent such incidents in the future, ensure adherence to safety protocols, and safeguard natural resources. 5. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Council is urging the Ministry of Transport to implement a 20-baht fare cap for all electric railway systems within the next year to encourage the use of public transport and lower air pollution levels. Pongkawin Jungrungruangkit, an adviser to Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungruangkit, met with city councilors to discuss the proposed fare cap. The Ministry of Transport recently received a report from the Department of Rail Transport, which highlighted a 26% year-on-year increase in passengers on the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) Red Line and the Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Purple Line. The report attributed this growth to the 20-baht maximum fares introduced in October last year. Pongkawin mentioned that a draft of the Common Ticketing System Management Act is underway. Once enacted, it will standardize fares on all electric rail lines to a 20-baht maximum, expected to be effective by September next year. Currently, fares on Bangkok’s mass transit systems vary by distance, ranging from 17 to 43 baht on MRT routes and 15 to 62 baht on the BTS Skytrain system. A common ticketing system fund is also being proposed to provide compensation to businesses operating rail lines affected by the new fare policy. This fund is expected to be established by March 2026. 8. Early this morning at Kata Beach, Phuket, a lifeguard discovered the body of a woman. Local police from Karon are investigating the case. The deceased, clothed in a black bikini, is around 30 years old, about 160cm tall, and has long black hair. Her body was found face down on the sand, opposite the Club Med Hotel. No visible injuries were found on the woman's body and no identification was discovered at the scene, leaving the police puzzled. Initial investigations imply that she might have gone swimming alone at the beach and was overcome by large waves. Red flags, signaling dangerous conditions, are currently being flown along the beach due to heavy seas and strong winds that discourage swimming. In an attempt to identify the victim and find out her nationality, the police are getting in touch with hotels and resorts located along Kata Beach. 9. A young female student lost her life in a tragic school van accident in Northern Thailand's Nan province, leaving her family devastated and raising questions about existing safety protocols. The accident happened on Sunday, July 4 when the van, carrying 16 students, lost control and overturned. Thirteen students suffered minor injuries, while three others, including the driver, had to be hospitalised. One female student was gravely injured and experienced a cardiac arrest at the scene. Despite an emergency life-saving response, she had to be admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Despite best medical efforts, she passed away today. The mourning family took to social media to express their grief and pay homage to the deceased student, tenderly referred to as Luk Yee. In their tribute, they wrote, "You will always be remembered for your joyful spirit. While we didn't grow up together, I cherished our sisterly bond. The world might have been a bit harsh for you. Rest in peace, dear sister. I might not have expressed it often, but my love for you was always deep. May your journey back to the cosmos be safe.” The family’s heartfelt message and their plea for tougher school van safety measures were shared on a social media page, "This is Mueang Nan." The current law allows school vans to carry no more than 12 students, but according to the investigation, the crashed van was carrying 17 passengers including the driver. After the accident, Luk Yee was kept on life-support with her condition critical. She couldn't regain consciousness or breathe on her own and required continuous medication to keep her heart beating. Following her devastating loss, her family highlighted the importance of following safety protocols to avoid similar tragedies in the future. 11. Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin vehemently denies knowing anything about the explosive rumours circulating about attempts to bribe Move Forward Party (MFP) MPs to switch allegiances. Insiders claim that rival political factions have allegedly dangled a staggering 30 million baht in front of some MFP MPs to lure them away. These tantalising whispers come as the MFP, the leading opposition party, braces for a devastating blow. The Constitutional Court has ruled on a case filed by the Election Commission (EC), accusing MFP of violating the Political Party Act. The charges are severe, suggesting that MFP’s actions could be interpreted as an attempt to overthrow the constitutional monarchy and act hostile towards the monarchy. The verdict confirmed the party’s dissolution this afternoon. MFP MP from Chachoengsao, Jirat Thongsuwan, made shocking allegations that a high-ranking minister has offered up to 30 million baht to each MFP MP willing to defect, reported The Nation. The 62 year old Thai premier stated that he is not aware of such attempts to buy off MPs, which is a wrongful action. “I am not sure if this claim is true or not, but I urge those who have evidence to come forward so legal actions can be taken.” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of The Nation Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-07 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 12. Thailand takes off with green aviation: SAF guidelines File photo for reference only Thailand’s Energy Ministry is poised to unveil groundbreaking guidelines on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the final quarter of this year, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). 13. Thailand’s Energy Ministry is poised to unveil groundbreaking guidelines on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the final quarter of this year, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). This initiative tackles the colossal carbon footprint of the energy sector, the top offender in global warming. With the energy sector spewing out a staggering 69% of total emissions—40% from fuel combustion, 29% from transport, and 20% from manufacturing and construction—the need for a solution has never been more urgent. SAF, a cutting-edge innovation, slashes emissions by up to 80%. Yet, its adoption has been sluggish due to its triple-the-cost price tag compared to conventional jet fuel. Sarun Benjanirat, CAAT Deputy Director-General stated that SAF’s potential was spotlighted when the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) backed it for boosting aviation sustainability. For the past two years, Thailand has been on a mission to integrate SAF, collaborating with the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency, and the Department of Energy Business. Sarun is confident that by next year, Thailand will have ample SAF supplies from used cooking oil, ethanol, and palm oil. He noted that blending SAF with Jet A1 fuel could slash costs significantly. “CAAT has engaged with airlines, SAF manufacturers, and relevant agencies on fuel blending terms and is awaiting the Energy Ministry’s guidelines.” While Thailand lags in SAF adoption, clear directives on its usage and emission reduction are crucial. Expected to present the SAF guidelines to the Cabinet in September, the Energy Ministry will outline the mixing ratio and a phased increase in SAF consumption, with an official announcement anticipated by October or November. In a pioneering step, Bangkok Airways has partnered with PTT Oil and Retail Business (PTTOR) to integrate SAF, targeting 1% of total consumption by 2026. Vietjet Thailand has also inked a deal with PTTOR for SAF use in both domestic and international flights from July, aligning with the global goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as stated by the airline’s CEO, Woranate Laprabang, reported The Nation. 15. Japanese Man Who Went Missing Four Years Ago Found Dead in Thailand A Japanese man who disappeared four years ago was reportedly found dead due to sickness. His body was discovered in Chiang Mai, a province located in Northern Thailand, and currently remains at a local hospital. The man's mother, 66-year-old Yoshimi Nishi, arrived in Thailand on Monday, August 5, to find her son, Takahiro Nishi. She explained that she last heard from her son in June 2020. Subsequently in 2020, she received an email from an anonymous person stating that her son was ill and required around 240,000 baht (approximately 1 million yen) for medical treatment. A second email asked for an additional 300,000 yen, but Yoshimi grew suspicious of the situation and did not send the money. Investigation into Takahiro's past unveiled that he and his business partner, Maresuke Takami, had been arrested for embezzlement in 2020. They managed to bail out for 100,000 baht each, and afterward, Takahiro went missing. The pair's bail money was reportedly paid by Maresuke's girlfriend, Chonnakarn Katarat, who was later called for questioning by the police. Following a five-hour interview, authorities revealed Takahiro's death to Channel 7 news. He died around 10 pm on June 8, 2023, in a house in the Sansai district of Chiang Mai. His body was then moved to the Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital for autopsy. Police traced Maresuke to a rented house in Bangkok's Ramintra district and detained him over charges of overstaying his visa. It remains unclear if he and Chonlakarn are still together. The autopsy report revealed that Takahiro died of a lung infection. His body is currently awaiting contact from his relatives at the hospital. A DNA test will be followed to confirm the identity for the family. Following the timeline, an email asking for 300,000 baht was received after Takahiro died, hence the police plan to scrutinize the bank account mentioned in the email to find the sender. Additionally, authorities discovered activity on Takahiro's credit card at local hotels and restaurants following his demise. 17. An individual accidentally left behind 40 baht worth of gold in their car at a Chachoengsao car wash. The incident caused panic when the customer couldn't find the gold at their residence. The car wash owner narrated the wavering moment via a Facebook post and also uncovered the substantial worth of the gold. A regular customer at the RS CarWash & Detailing Bangpakong, located in the Tha Sa An, Bang Pakong district, Chachoengsao province, had a fright when he realized he had left behind 40 baht worth of gold in his car. The car wash owner, Assana Arty S, mentioned it on August 7 in a Facebook post, detailing the occurrence. On this particular incidence, the customer's spouse had placed the gold in the car when it was taken for cleaning. They later commenced a frantic search at home and asked the car owner about the gold's location when they didn't find it. The couple finally figured that it was left at the car wash. Remembering the incident, the owner of the car wash pointed out the customer's initial panic when they discovered that the gold was not with them. The owner said, "The customer forgot about the gold in the car. They returned only to confirm their suspicion, and they were very surprised when it was found. I was also shocked when I understood the value of the gold, equivalent to leaving around a million baht in the car." The gold, which is worth over 1.6 million baht, was safely returned to the customer. There was no uncertainty of it getting lost, the owner emphasized, signaling the reliability and trustworthiness of their service. 19. The Constitutional Court of Thailand today announced a verdict to dissolve the Move Forward Party (MFP) over their efforts to reform the lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Law, and ban the managing executives of the party for 10 years. In April, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) requested that the Constitutional Court consider dissolving the MFP due to its promotion of the reformation of Section 112 during last year’s General Election. The ECT argued that these reforms posed a threat to both the monarchy and the democratic form of government with the king as head of state. After five months of deliberation and rescheduling the verdict announcement, the Constitutional Court delivered its decision at 3pm today, agreeing with the ECT to dissolve the party. In addition to the dissolution, the court imposed a 10-year ban on 11 members of the party’s executive teams who held positions between March 25, 2021, and July 31, 2024. The list of affected party members includes: The first party leader – Pita Limjaroenrat The first Secretary-General of the party and the second party leader – Chaithawat Tulathon The Party Treasurer – Nateepat Kulsetthasith The Party Member Register – Nakornpong Suppanimitr The Northern Executive Committee – Padipat Suntiphada The Southern Executive Committee – Somchai Fangchonlajit The Central Executive Committee – Amarat Chokepamitkul The Northeastern Executive Committee and second Secretary-General of the party – Apichat Sirisoontron The Eastern Executive Committee – Bencha Saengchantra The Labour Department Executive Committee – Suthep U-on The Executive Committee – Apisit Promrit These 11 members are now banned for 10 years from serving as MPs, forming a new political party, joining the executive management team of any political party, or participating in the establishment of a new political party. Following the dissolution, the MFP now has 142 Members of Parliament (MPs), and each MP must seek a new political party within 60 days to avoid losing their status. They would also have to select the new party leader to work during their transitions. One MFP MP, Jirat Thongsuwan, told the media recently that an assistant to a minister asked him to join his party for 30 million baht. Parliament also has to select a new Vice President of the House of Representatives as the former Vice President Padipat was one of those banned. The official MFP Facebook account shared a video after their dissolution with a caption that said, “In this world, there are some things that cannot be destroyed and cannot perish but will continue to grow without stopping. A new journey has begun. Let’s move forward together, people.” Deprose Muchena, Senior Director at Amnesty International slammed the court’s decision. “The Constitutional Court’s ruling in favour of dissolving the Move Forward Party is an untenable decision that reveals the authorities’ complete disregard for Thailand’s international human rights obligations. “Dissolving the party merely for advocating legal reforms constitutes a serious violation of the rights to freedom of expression and association against lawmakers who were simply performing their duty of proposing laws. “The authorities’ relentless harassment of the political opposition represents a stark contradiction, as Thailand has publicly committed to global leadership on human rights by applying for a seat at the UN Human Rights Council. Thai authorities must urgently reverse the dissolution and stop weaponising laws to intimidate and harass critics, human rights defenders and opposition politicians.” By Petch Petpailin Photo by Sakchai Lalit via AP Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-07 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Thai woman wonders about paying friend for regular work lifts File photo for reference only A lady from Thailand recently took to an online forum to ask if it was correct to financially compensate her friend for giving her a lift to work during heavy rainfall. 21. A lady from Thailand recently took to an online forum to ask if it was correct to financially compensate her friend for giving her a lift to work during heavy rainfall. The woman was unsure if the 100 baht she paid for each journey for fuel was above board and was perplexed about the etiquette surrounding this situation. On August 2nd, in a disagreement over transport matters, she shared her situation on the Pantip forum. The lady who works part-time at a bar in Lampang, usually uses her motorcycle for commuting to work. However, during the rainy season she decided against traveling the 7-kilometer distance on her bike due to safety reasons and also to avoid getting wet. Subsequently, she requested a male friend who lived close by to drop her off at work. He agreed to do so and she used to pick her up at 5pm and drop her home at 12:30am. Things went smoothly until, after the second drive, her friend asked for money towards fuel. Initially she assumed it was a one-time request, but her friend continued to ask her for 100 baht every time he drove her. Perplexed by this, she asked their common friends if this was routine behavior. She came to know that this friend usually expected others to contribute towards fuel for drives. While she normally paid the fuel money, she felt the amount asked was too high especially considering the recent increase in fuel prices. She questioned whether it was appropriate to always give money to a friend, considering it as a matter of courtesy. Most online users empathized with the friend who was giving her the lifts, noting that he was not her personal driver and using his car required fuel which costs money. Moreover, the time he took out of his routine to ferry her was also a sacrifice. Users pointed out the difference between asking a friend for an occasional lift, and taking advantage of their generosity too often. The majority suggested her to consider using a taxi service instead, as it wasn't her friend's duty to transport her to work, as reported by KhaoSod. Some comments said, “It's reasonable for your friend to ask for fuel money. It's not just about the cash but also the time and effort he puts in for you.” “Perhaps it's time to seek alternative transportation. Your friend seems to be helping you out often and might feel he's being imposed upon.” File photo for reference only -- 2024-08-07 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 23. A beauty queen from Ratchaburi surrendered herself to the authorities after realizing she was breaking the law by promoting gambling websites. Her actions highlight the need for influencers and freelancers to carefully evaluate their work activities. A post by Police Major General Chatpantakarn Klayklueng, Chief of the Technology Crime Suppression Division 1, indicated the beauty queen recognized the illegal nature of her activities and chose to surrender to the police. In an online video, Major General Chatpantakarn discussed the dangers of cybercrime and the role of police in tackling such issues. "A beauty queen from Ratchaburi has admitted that promoting gambling sites is illegal. We have already shut down tens of thousands of these websites," he said. Under the Thai Gambling Act of 1935, particularly Section 12, heavy penalties are prescribed for anyone found participating in, deceiving, or openly advertising gambling activities. Penalties can range from a three-month to a three-year prison term and fines from 500 to 5,000 baht (USD 14 to USD 140). Major General Chatpantakarn stressed the need to understand the seriousness of these offences. He urged people to report wrongdoings to the cyber police instead of waiting for an arrest. Even though the beauty queen's case serves as a warning, she is not exempt from facing legal consequences. Her decisions might potentially harm her future career, according to KhaoSod. In conclusion, Major General Chatpantakarn issued a broad cautionary message to influencers and freelancers to diligently scrutinize their work, bearing in mind the potential ramifications. "Consider the consequences before accepting any job,” he said. 25. A murderer is on the run after killing a 71-year-old Thai woman in her home in Chiang Rai, a northern province, and making off with her gold necklace. The victim, Sa-ngiam Kunnana, was reported dead by her younger brother, Prasit Sanukun, 58, at Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station on August 6. Sa-ngiam's lifeless body was found in her house after Prasit and a neighbour broke in as there was no response from the inside. Prasit informed the police and the media outlet ThaiRath that Sa-ngiam was last seen attending a relative’s funeral on August 4, and was expected to be part of the cremation ceremony the following day, but she didn’t turn up. Prasit decided to check on her after the cremation finished around 3pm. Prasit, upon finding the house locked and unresponsive, suspected something amiss and took the help of the neighbour to break into the house. The police reported evidence of a theft and a struggle, with the killer leaving bloody footprints on the floor. Sa-ngiam usually wore three pieces of gold jewelry: a necklace, a ring, and a bracelet. According to the police report, only her gold necklace was missing, while her cash, amounting to 20,000 baht resting in her bedside table, was left untouched. Community leader Luan Piraban disclosed to the media that Sa-ngiam lived alone as her two children resided in Mahasarakham province and her granddaughter in Phuket.
