In Bangkok, a Thai couple has sought assistance from a news agency after failing to get the local police to identify two unknown persons who vandalized their home. The perpetrators were reported to have hurled bags containing pork blood and pickled fish at their residence located at Soi Phetchaburi 31 in the Ratchathewi district. The incident, which happened on August 5, was followed up by a team from Channel 3 on August 8. The victims live in a five-story building, with the ground floor functioning as a shop for selling 'Kanom Krok', also known as coconut pancakes, next door to Pratunam Market. The 65-year-old female victim, named Bualip, reported that she heard banging noises at their front door around 2.30am while they were asleep on the second floor. Initially, her husband thought it was due to an explosion in an outside electric transformer. However, upon investigating, they found blood stains on their door and nearby floor, accompanied by a foul odor. They speculated the blood was possibly mixed with pickled fish. To help figure out what occurred, they asked their daughter from Pathum Thani province to scrutinize their home's security footage. The footage revealed two individuals arrived at their home on a motorcycle, one person remained on the vehicle while the other threw two bags of what is believed to be blood at their house. Unable to identify the suspects who had motorcycle helmets on and used a motorcycle without a registration plate, the couple filed a complaint with the Phayathai Police Station. Additional footage obtained from neighbors and local businesses was also provided. Although the police promised a visit, the couple claims they never showed up. Bualip expressed her bewilderment on the motivation behind the suspects’ actions. She maintained that she and her husband have lived peacefully in the building for over 30 years without quarrelling with anyone, as managing their shop consumes most of their time. In response to Channel 3’s follow-up, the Phayathai Police Station confirmed they are actively investigating the incident. There was a raid on three herbal shops in Pattaya yesterday. The police uncovered illegal employment, false health claims, and deceit upon investigation. The Pattaya Indian Community Association reported these shops. They stated that the shops were exploiting customers by selling overly priced and ineffective herbal remedies. The businesses were compelling foreigners to purchase these expensive items. In response to these allegations, the Consumer Protection Department at the Chon Buri Provincial Public Health Office, the Bang Lamung District Health Office, and the Pattaya Tourist Police coordinated a surveillance operation on the said shops. Upon confirmation of the illegal activities, officials took action. Officials found an array of products such as cosmetics, shampoo, soap, herbal indigestion remedies, hair oil, lotions, and skin oils. These products claimed to have exaggerated effectiveness. Some of these items were even unregistered, violating Section 17 of the Herbal Products Act. All these items were seized for evidence. Five people were apprehended in this operation. Four were accused of encouraging foreigners to buy the doubtful products, while one foreigner was working without a permit. Pattaya Tourist Police Superintendent, Police Lieutenant Colonel Piyapong Ensarn, verified that the evidence and suspects were handed over to the investigators at Pattaya City Police Station. The charges include the production, sale, or import of medicines without approval under the Drug Act and sale of unregistered herbal products under the Herbal Products Act. A peaceful day at Nang Ram Beach in Chon Buri province turned into a nightmare when an escaped buffalo went on a wild rampage, charging at unsuspecting tourists and sparking widespread panic. The young, powerful bovine was spotted tearing across the sandy shores, causing chaos as it headed straight for a family enjoying a leisurely picnic. Eyewitnesses described the shocking moment when the buffalo “powered towards the family,” leaving everyone scrambling for safety. “He was like a runaway train—unstoppable. We just grabbed our stuff and ran. I’ve never seen anything like it.” The situation, which could have ended in tragedy, took a fortunate turn when quick-thinking locals intervened, successfully capturing the distressed animal before it could cause any harm. The buffalo was then guided away from the crowded beach, bringing the tense ordeal to a close. Despite the dramatic scenes, miraculously, no one was injured during the buffalo’s unexpected beach visit. The animal was safely returned to its owner, unharmed and likely unaware of the chaos it had caused. Officials are now investigating how the buffalo managed to escape in the first place, as the incident has left many questioning the safety measures in place to prevent such events, reported Yahoo News UK. Luxury retail has skyrocketed, with sales in the first half of this year soaring to four times the levels seen in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, according to a market survey by The 1 Insight. This staggering growth comes despite a sluggish economy, thanks largely to the spending habits of new-generation shoppers. The 1 Insight report highlights the resurgence of the “lipstick effect,” a phenomenon where consumers, even during economic downturns, opt for small indulgences like premium lipsticks. This trend has been observed globally, but the recent survey underscores its strong presence in the luxury market. In a breakdown of the luxury sector, beauty products have outshone fashion items, outperforming them by about 10%. Among the hottest sellers in the beauty segment are lipsticks, makeup palettes, and perfumes. In fashion, handbags, accessories, and shoes top the list. The survey also provides a fascinating glimpse into the shopping preferences of different generations. Gen Z (born 1997-2012) gravitates towards luxury cosmetics, perfumes, and skincare products. Meanwhile, Gen Y (born 1981-1996) shows a stronger preference for fashion-related items, followed by skincare and perfumes. Older generations, like Gen X (born 1965-1980) and Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964), lean towards skincare, fashion products, and cosmetics. Notably, these groups also exhibit higher brand loyalty compared to the more brand-fluid Gen Z. Additionally, while younger consumers favour online shopping via e-commerce platforms and social media, Gen X and Baby Boomers still prefer the traditional storefront experience. A separate survey by CRC VoiceShare, conducted from May to June, revealed that half of the respondents had purchased at least one fashion or beauty item in the past month. Most respondents expressed a preference for shopping at department stores, citing the superior customer experience and the tangible sense of luxury, reported The Nation. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has officially asked the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to allow it to use particular areas for building the Orange Line's western route. This new route plan is meant to link Bang Khun Non and Min Buri. Details of the Orange Line MRT project were discussed earlier this week. This included MRTA, the builder, and the party that has been granted the project's rights. Tawatchai Napasaksri, who leads BMA’s Public Works Department, shared the information. The proposed route starts from Sutthawat Road and it stretches along Siriraj Road. From there, it goes under the Chao Phraya River and then along Ratchadamnoen Road. The route will end at Esplanade Cineplex Ratchadapisek and connect with the Orange Line's eastern route. Most of the construction needs will be carried out underground, beneath existing roads and walkways. The construction is likely to affect the forest park on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road and the area outside City Hall II in Din Daeng. Due to the construction of entry and exit points, some trees may need to be removed and walkover bridges may have to be rearranged. Tawatchai shared that MRTA plans to meet with the Departments of Drainage and Sewerage, Traffic and Transport, and Environment to explain the project's nitty-gritty. This will lead to a group meeting to pin down the details of the land transfer needed for construction. As mentioned in MRTA’s communication, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed to transfer the land within 120 days, starting from August 1, Tawatchai said. He further stated that the parties involved must maintain the construction areas and limit harmful impacts on the residents throughout the five-year project. “After the project is done, they should restore roads and sidewalks to how they were before. Any trees that were removed should be replanted, and the MRTA must oversee the drainage systems to prevent any flooding.” File photo for reference only -- 2024-08-08 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. A significant collision involving a large motorbike and a barrier occurred on Khlong Chonprathan Road, but the driver is yet to be found. Only a single shoe remained at the accident spot, even after thorough searches by rescue teams. Early this morning, at 3.30 am on August 8, the Chiang Mai Provincial Police Headquarters (191) got notified about an accident. A large motorcycle crashed into a roadside barrier near the Mae Hia Agricultural Research Station in Mueang Chiang Mai. Upon receiving this information, officials alerted the Phuping Police Station patrol and the Chiang Mai Rescue Association, who promptly sent an ambulance and divers to the site. When the rescue team reached the location, they found a large motorcycle with a Chiang Mai number plate lying on the side of the road. Upon closer inspection, they discovered a single sneaker and signs of a collision with the barrier, leading them to suspect that the driver might have toppled into an adjacent irrigation canal. Despite an exhaustive search, the driver has not been found yet. The Chiang Mai Rescue Association President, Tulip Mahawong, spoke about finding only the motorcycle at the site and no trace of the injured driver. The Rescue association, thus, initiated a water search in the canal, working on the hypothesis that the driver might have been thrust into the water due to the accident's impact. Even after scrutinizing a 3.3-kilometer long stretch of the canal, no body was discovered. The rescue operation was temporarily suspended because the canal veers underground at a sluice gate, making any further search efforts impractical for the time being. Northeast Thailand Truckers Seek Diesel Price Reductions File photo for reference only Truck drivers in Northeast Thailand are calling on the government to either reduce diesel fuel prices or increase freight charges to handle the rising energy costs. This move, they argue, will ensure their trucks stay in service. The president of the Northern Transport Association (NTA), Wichai Sawangkhachon, claims that about half of over 10,000 trucks belonging to roughly 700 freight businesses under the NTA are not currently operational. Around 3,000 of these dormant trucks, he says, have been reclaimed by vehicle financing companies due to unpaid loans. Around 3,000 of these dormant trucks, he says, have been reclaimed by vehicle financing companies due to unpaid loans. The situation has been primarily caused by soaring diesel prices and reduced demand for trucking services. Northeastern Service Union Transport's president, Somphon Hirunyasut, points out that many operators are struggling to keep their businesses alive due to growing losses, which in turn has led to company shutdowns. This trend, initially sparked by the economic impacts of the Covid-19 crisis, has been further aggravated by increasing overheads. Diesel prices in nearby Laos are approximately 3.7 baht per litre cheaper than in Thailand. In contrast, the cost of truck heads in Vietnam is roughly half of those in Thailand. Adding to the problem, a free trade agreement between Thailand and China affords a tax waiver to Chinese truck operators, which could potentially worsen the existing predicament, as reported by Bangkok Post. “Many Chinese truck operators already have a strong presence in Thailand’s neighboring countries, and this agreement will make it easier for them to draw customers here,” the report added. The National Health Security Office (NHSO) in Thailand wants to replace the current two-dose HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine with a cheaper, more effective single-dose version soon. Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin reported that the plan was discussed in a recent NHSO meeting. The current vaccine used in Thailand has a success rate of 60% against two types of the virus, HPV16 and HPV18. On the other hand, the proposed single-dose vaccine claims to be 90% effective against nine types of the virus. The HPV virus is known to cause cervical cancer. The government currently gives out the HPV vaccine to females aged between 11 and 20. They are also considering the switch to the new single dose vaccine. If the new vaccine stays affordable, the government is likely to buy it in the next fiscal year, says Somsak. The government plans to buy around 700,000 to 800,000 doses of the new HPV vaccine. This will be within the same budget allocated for the current two-dose vaccine. People who have already taken one dose of the current vaccine will switch to the new single-dose version. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) apprehended a key figure in an online gambling network after he evaded capture for over a year. The arrest took place yesterday, with the suspect facing charges of promoting illegal gambling and money laundering. Police Lieutenant Colonel Yuthana Phaerndam, Deputy Director-General of the DSI, received a report from Witthawat Sukantharos, Director of the Surveillance and Intelligence Centre, and Operational Team 3. They successfully arrested Nattakit, the suspect, who was wanted under a warrant issued by the Criminal Court. Nattakit was charged with orchestrating and promoting illegal gambling activities. He allegedly used direct and indirect methods to lure individuals into participating in unauthorised gambling. Additionally, he is accused of money laundering. The arrest occurred at his residence in Nai Khlong Bang Pla Kot, Phra Samut Chedi district, Samut Prakan province. This particular case has been designated as Special Case No. 5/2023 by the Narcotics Litigation Division. Nattakit reportedly played a significant role in the illegal gambling network by managing advertisements that encouraged online gambling. He was also an administrator for a gambling website associated with a well-known seafood restaurant owner in central Bangkok. The network saw a monthly cash flow of over 500 million baht. The primary suspect in this case remains at large and is believed to be residing abroad. Investigators have recommended prosecuting multiple individuals involved in this case. The special investigation file has been handed over to the public prosecutor. Nattakit managed to evade arrest for over a year before his recent apprehension. Currently, officials have him in custody and have handed him over to the special case investigator of the Narcotics Litigation Division to proceed with legal actions, reported KhaoSod. “The case is part of our ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal gambling operations and related financial crimes. “We remain steadfast in our mission to uphold the law and protect the public from the harms of illegal gambling and related financial crimes.” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2024-08-08 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Nightclub owner denies attempted rape, claims victim wanted sex Photo via Facebook/ Chaloemsak Maleerod A Thai nightclub owner denied attacking and attempting to rape a female singer who worked at his club, claiming the alleged victim took off her clothes because she wanted to have sex with him. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1334994-nightclub-owner-denies-attempted-rape-claims-victim-wanted-sex/ -
A Thai nightclub owner denied attacking and attempting to rape a female singer who worked at his club, claiming the alleged victim took off her clothes because she wanted to have sex with him. The victim’s boyfriend, Chaloemsak Maleerod, took to social media to seek justice for his 36 year old girlfriend, Nui. He posted pictures of Nui with wounds and bruises on Facebook yesterday, August 7, to announce that nightclub owner Diao allegedly brutally attacked and tried to rape his girlfriend. Chaloemsak explained that he is a drummer and Nui is a singer at a nightclub on Hathairat Road in the Min Buri district of Bangkok, owned by Diao. On the day of the incident, Nui, who is close to Diao’s wife, went to the couple’s home in the Lam Luk Ka district of Pathum Thani to continue drinking with the woman after the club closed. Chaloemsak disclosed that Diao’s wife revealed issues between her and her husband to Nui multiple times, making Nui and the woman close. So, Nui trusted the woman and agreed to go to her home. According to Chaloemsak, Diao’s wife asked Nui to take a shower in her bedroom. While Nui was about to enter the bathroom, Diao approached her, took off her clothes, and attempted to rape her in front of his wife. Nui resisted and tried to escape, prompting Diao’s wife to physically assault her. Nui decided to flee despite being naked. The couple followed and gave her pyjamas. Nui called Chaloemsak, who came to pick her up and later shared the story on his Facebook. Nightclub owner’s defence Chaloemsak stated that Nui bore bruises and wounds across her body, especially on her face. All her belongings were still at the couple’s home. Chaloemsak said he and his girlfriend worked at the nightclub for about five months and the couple had never displayed any signs of violence. Chaloemsak also added that the couple threatened him not to report the matter to the police because Diao knew influential police officers in the area, so he sought justice from the online community. ThaiRath reported that Chaloemsak and Nui reported the issue to Lam Luk Ka Police Station yesterday, August 7. They were questioned for three hours, and Nui refused to give an interview with journalists. Chaloemsak spoke for his girlfriend, saying he revealed everything he knew in the Facebook post. His girlfriend had never drunk alcohol without him before. This was her first time. Diao went to the police station to defend himself last night. Diao said he had video evidence that he and his wife did not physically or sexually assault Nui. Diao alleged that Nui entered his bedroom with his wife, stating she wanted to take a shower. After removing her clothes, Nui sat on his lap and behaved as if she wanted to have sex with him. According to Diao, his wife did not intervene because they were reportedly swingers. Diao maintained that he did not physically assault Nui and claimed not to know who did. He suspected that her boyfriend, Chaloemsak, might have attacked her out of jealousy, as she had left his home wearing sexy pyjamas. Diao also explained that he recorded a video of Nui as a precaution against blackmail. He stated that recording such interactions was his standard practice, as many women sought to have sex with him and he wanted to guard against potential extortion. Diao announced his intention to sue Chaloemsak, Nui, and also the netizens who criticised him negatively on social media. Thai ministry steps in as mothers’ vape video sparks concern Picture courtesy of Shuttershock The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) intervened to assist two children after a video surfaced showing their young mothers vaping next to them. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1334992-thai-ministry-steps-in-as-mothers’-vape-video-sparks-concern/ -
The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) intervened to assist two children after a video surfaced showing their young mothers vaping next to them. The video, which gained widespread attention about a week ago, featured two young mothers, 22 year old Por, and 19 year old Nut, vaping while their children—an eight-month-old infant and a two-year-old toddler—were nearby. Shared by the Red Skull Facebook page, the clip sparked online criticism of the mothers’ behaviour. The owner of the video responded. “Everyone has their own parenting style. What you see might not be what you think. We raise our children happily in our own way. How does that bother anyone else?” MSDHS Minister Varawut Silpa-archa revealed that the video was filmed at a house provided by a rice mill where Por’s husband works in Bang Pla Ma district. Nut, a next-door neighbour, was visiting with her two-year-old child at the time. Por was noted for frequently vaping and sharing various video clips on TikTok. The video also showed the two-year-old imitating vaping after observing his mother’s e-cigarette. Minister Varawut stated that officials from the Suphan Buri Child and Family Shelter, along with local officials, investigated the situation on Monday, August 5. They warned the mothers and provided education on child safety and proper child-rearing practices in accordance with the Child Protection Act. The shelter conducted a medical examination of the children. Local government officials intend to monitor the two mothers and will take legal action if their childcare practices are found to harm the welfare or health of the children. Minister Varawut emphasised that Thailand’s ageing society necessitates governmental attention to quality child care, reported Bangkok Post.
