BANGKOK (NNT) - The Royal Thai Police (RTP) has issued a warning about an increase in fake government websites that are designed to deceive the public. RTP Deputy Spokesperson Pol Maj Gen Siriwat Deepor highlighted a concerning trend where fraudsters misuse the “.go.th” domain extension, which is formally designated for government agencies. Scammers cleverly place this domain extension at the end of URLs to create a false sense of authenticity, misleading internet users. To help the public distinguish between genuine and fraudulent websites, the RTP has released a guide on verifying web domains. According to the guide, a legitimate government website will have the “.go.th” directly following the hostname and before any forward slashes in the URL. For example, the correct format would be “https://www.royalthaipolice.go.th.” Further efforts to combat these fraudulent activities include collaboration between the RTP and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) to shut down these fake sites through court orders and to prosecute those responsible. Individuals who believe they have been victims of such scams are encouraged to report their experiences online at www.thaipoliceonline.go.th or via the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau's (CIB) 24-hour hotline at 1441. A photograph posted by the well-known influencer Toffee, known as Toffee the Computer Repairing Ladyboy, sparked a heated debate online. The image, taken at the famous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, shows a tourist stepping on a replica of the Buddha’s footprint, leading to widespread criticism on social media. The controversy divided opinions. Some believe the foreign tourist’s behaviour is inappropriate and fear it could bring misfortune. Others, however, understand that cultural differences and the placement of the replica could lead to misunderstandings. They suggest that the temple or relevant government officials hold a meeting to discuss preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future. Toffee recently addressed the uproar on their page, explaining that the image in question was taken two years ago, today. They clarified that the photo resurfaced because a friend tagged them in it, inviting them to visit the temple again, which led to its viral resurgence amidst ongoing social media criticism. It remains to be seen how the temple will respond to the situation. “It’s an old photo from two years ago. My page followers pointed out why someone was standing behind the replica.” Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, located in Chiang Mai, is one of the country’s most revered temples, attracting numerous visitors annually. The Buddha’s footprint is a significant religious symbol, and any perceived disrespect can lead to strong reactions from the public. One commenter suggested that the temple or relevant government officials should organise a meeting to discuss preventive measures to avoid such incidents. While the tourist’s actions may have been inadvertent, they have highlighted the need for clearer guidelines and signage to educate visitors on appropriate behaviour. This could help prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure that such sacred spaces are respected by all who visit, reported Khaosod. A 35-year-old woman was sent to the hospital after she was found with self-imposed knife injuries in a minor guest house in Patong, Phuket. The police were called to a hotel on Phra Mettha Road at nearly 7 am on August 11. When they got there, they found the woman in a bed suffering from stab wounds to her belly and a slash on her neck. There was noticeable blood all over the place and a blood-soaked knife close by. The person in charge of the building, who saw the incident, stated that the argument started when she talked to the woman and her boyfriend about pending rental payments. The boyfriend said that he had given the rent money to the woman, but it had not been paid yet. The disagreement intensified and the woman allegedly used a knife to stab herself in the abdomen and slash her neck, according to the building manager. Emergency medical workers from the Patong Kusoldharm Foundation delivered initial medical assistance and took the woman to Patong Hospital for further treatment. She is still being cared for in the hospital while the police pursue their investigation into the incident. This Mother's Day saw a rise in the price of local jasmine flowers and a decrease in their availability due to varying weather conditions. Florists in Khon Kaen, who usually trade at the Thetsabarn 1 Fresh Market, have been importing jasmine flowers from Indonesia because they are cheaper. Notably, Noorian, a 65-year-old florist, stated that persistent rainfall has disrupted the flowering of local jasmines this year. The Thai jasmine flowers, instead of their regular price of 1500 baht per kg, are getting hard to find," said Noorian. "In contrast, the Indonesian jasmine flowers are available for 1000 baht/kg." Malasri, an 82-year-old garland maker, said she's had to substitute jasmine with white flowers like Dok Pud buds due to a shortage of local supply. Jasmine flowers, recognized for their white petals and long-lasting scent, are a symbol of Mother's Day. During off-peak periods, their price typically ranges between 300 and 600 baht per kg depending on their size. This year, however, the prices have shot up to four times the usual, with a kg of jasmine in Nakhon Ratchasima selling between 2400 to 2600 baht. In line with the Mother's Day celebrations today, Chai Wacharonke, a government spokesperson, has encouraged the public to partake in festivities at Sanam Luang. The day's activities will include giving alms to 193 monks and novices at 7:30 AM and a birthday ceremony for Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother at 7:19 PM. Similar celebrations will be held at city halls across the country. Additionally, well-wishers may submit their messages for Her Majesty through the Bureau of the Royal Household's website until tomorrow. Thailand's Public Health Ministry is on edge as World Health Organization (WHO) contemplates declaring the monkeypox outbreak an international public health emergency. The permanent Secretary of the Public Health Ministry, Dr Opas Karnkawinpong, stated that there has been a rise in monkeypox cases in Africa according to a recent WHO report. This year, 15 countries have reported infections, with the Democratic Republic of Congo accounting for over 90% and children making up 70% of the affected population. The death rate is around 5%. Most recent cases have been seen in Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda, which are all east of DR Congo. Dr Opas noted that the number of monkeypox cases has significantly increased compared to the previous year. "Monkeypox used to mainly affect adults, but the emergence of the Clade Ib sub-strain has led to a sudden increase in infections among children. This strain can be easily transmitted through close contact with infected individuals who have pustules or secretions containing the virus, or through sexual contact", he said. The WHO recently held a meeting to discuss whether to declare the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, which would allow resources to be distributed to countries grappling with severe outbreaks. According to reports, the WHO is planning a meeting on Wednesday to decide whether to invoke its highest alert level in response to the monkeypox outbreak, which is spreading through several African countries. In Thailand, the Public Health Ministry has tasked the Disease Control Department to increase screening measures at international disease control checkpoints and hospitals. They are working with both Thai nationals and foreign travelers from affected countries to monitor possible symptoms and report to disease control officers, as reported by the Bangkok Post. In May, following the Songkran festival, the Disease Control Department cautioned about a significant rise in monkeypox, previously known as monkeypox, cases, mostly in Bangkok. Thai authorities are encouraging their citizens to remain vigilant and watch out for symptoms. From January 1, 2022, to May 28, 2024, Thailand reported 794 monkeypox infections and 11 deaths. Thailand is taking steps to allow casinos within entertainment complexes. The Finance Ministry has completed a draft Entertainment Complex Act, which will soon be reviewed by the public as stipulated by Section 77 of the Thai constitution. The aim is to consider the public's input before the bill is taken to the Cabinet for additional assessment. Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, confirmed that a meeting involving coalition party leaders and representatives has been scheduled at the Government House to discuss a range of subjects, including the Entertainment Complex Bill. This proposed law aims to legalise casinos and set rules for the gambling industry. The bill acknowledges the potential advantages of setting up entertainment complexes, referring to the vital role the tourism industry plays in Thailand's economy. It suggests that the entertainment industry could further increase tourist income. According to the bill, an entertainment complex requires a valid licence to function. This licence can be used for up to 30 years and it costs a registration fee of 5 billion baht, plus an annual fee of 1 billion baht. The complex will also be evaluated every five years. The law prohibits individuals under 20 from entering these complexes. Though foreigners can freely enter, Thai citizens must pay an entrance fee of 5,000 baht. The bill also requires the creation of a policy board, led by the prime minister, to set the rules governing these gaming complexes. With an observation on the potential economic impact corroborated by the Casino-based entertainment complexes' global business value of US$1.5 trillion (53 trillion baht) in 2022 and a projected increase to US$2.2 trillion by 2028. Chai added that Thailand should hasten its efforts to gain a portion of the global revenue, especially considering plans for three similar projects in Japan. A House committee report projecting that the project could collect 12 billion baht in taxes for Thailand in its first year was also mentioned by Chai. Five sites are being considered for this project, including two in Bangkok and one each in the Eastern Economic Corridor, Chiang Mai, and Phuket. However, the project has been criticised by Pariyes Angkurakitti, a spokesperson for the opposition Thai Sang Thai Party. He is concerned that inefficient law enforcement could obstruct efforts to successfully regulate the industry. Big local banks in Thailand are expecting increased difficulties for their corporate clients in the latter part of the year due to global uncertainties and fears of a potential US recession. The banks are planning to handle asset quality to offset the growing loan risks among specific customer groups. Siam Commercial Bank's (SCB) CEO, Kris Chantanotoke, pointed out that some business clients could face increasing operational problems later this year due to internal and external risk factors. There is a reduced demand in several industries within the country, paralleling slower economic growth. In the international context, several sectors are likely to be affected by economic uncertainties, geopolitical risks, and fears of a possible US recession. According to Kris, credit risk for some business clients is likely to rise. SCB plans to adapt a more cautious approach towards loan growth to safeguard asset quality. Even though there are challenges, Kris noted the SCB's business client base remains strong and ready to handle these uncertainties. Despite stagnant growth in some sectors, SCB predicts a rise in business loans this year. SCB, the fourth-largest lender in Thailand by total assets, has set a modest loan growth aim for 2024 and marked minor growth in the first half of this year. The President of Bangkok Bank (BBL), Chartsiri Sophonpanich, stated that the bank plans to support its clients amidst rising uncertainties in both domestic and global economies. BBL aims to increase its provisions for expected credit losses in the latter part of the year while effectively managing costs and adjusting interest rates for customers. The Chief Executive of Kasikornbank (KBank), Kattiya Indaravijaya, stated that the bank will cautiously grow its corporate loan portfolio in the latter half of the year due to heightened global and national uncertainties. As of June, the six significantly important domestic banks showed a combined loan portfolio of 13.49 trillion baht, a modest decrease from 13.51 trillion in December last year. These banks project total loan growth in the range of 3-5% for 2024. A woman was seriously injured when debris from a roadside grass-cutting operation hit her eye while she was riding her motorcycle in Phuket. Local government officials and the responsible company have initiated discussions regarding accountability and compensation. The incident occurred yesterday, August 10, at 9am on Phatthana Road, Soi 3, Talat Nuea subdistrict, Mueang Phuket district. A police officer from Mueang Phuket Police Station, Surachai Watitthaphon, received a report from the radio centre about a person injured by debris while riding a motorcycle. The debris, a result of a municipal worker’s grass-cutting activity, flew into the woman’s eye. Upon receiving the report, Senior Police Officer Pratuang Phonmana was informed and immediately proceeded to the scene. The injured individual, 45 year old Wilailak Thiepsingha, had already been transported to Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation Hospital for treatment. The worker responsible for the grass-cutting, Nay Naylin, a Myanmar national employed by Sompong Mining Ltd., was identified at the scene. Wilailak recounted the incident, explaining that it happened yesterday at around 8.20am as she was on her way to work. She mentioned that she often stops to buy breakfast before heading to work. While riding her motorcycle through the Mister Com intersection, she suddenly felt something hit her eye, causing severe pain. Upon checking her surroundings, she noticed the grass-cutting activity and realised that the worker, later identified as a Myanmar national, was responsible. Wilailak attempted to communicate with the worker but faced a language barrier and was in too much pain to resolve the situation on the spot. “I felt something hit my eye and it hurt a lot. I saw a worker cutting grass at the corner of the road. I tried to talk to him, but we didn’t understand each other, I was in so much pain, so I called for emergency help and reported the incident to the police.” The police are now aware of the worker’s identity and the company he works for. The employer of the grass-cutting worker has since made contact with Wilailak to discuss the responsibility and possible compensation for the incident. However, as today is a public holiday, further discussions are scheduled for the next working day, reported Khaosod. Thailand police seize 14,400 tonnes of hazardous aluminium dross Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post official website Thailand police seized approximately 14,400 tonnes of hazardous aluminium dross at two smelting factories in Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon provinces near Bangkok over the weekend. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335287-thailand-police-seize-14400-tonnes-of-hazardous-aluminium-dross/ -
Thailand police seized approximately 14,400 tonnes of hazardous aluminium dross at two smelting factories in Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon provinces near Bangkok over the weekend. Police in Nakhon Pathom, led by the Deputy Commander of the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division, Police Colonel Arun Wacharasisukanya, intercepted a semi-trailer truck on Saturday. The vehicle, found to be carrying large bags of aluminium dross without permission, was en route to an aluminium factory in Mueang district, Samut Sakhon. Following the interception, police visited Taibao Aluminum Co, the truck’s intended destination, located in tambon Bang Krachao of Mueang district, Samut Sakhon. At the site, police discovered 1,400 bags containing a total of 2,100 tonnes of aluminium dross. Although the factory was not operational at the time, police also found hot aluminium bars on the premises. Another factory in tambon Prong Maduea of Mueang district, Nakhon Pathom, the source of the aluminium dross found on the truck, was also inspected. This factory was similarly inactive with no workers present. Officials seized 12,387 tonnes of aluminium dross and hot aluminium bars at this location. The Department of Industrial Works had previously ordered the closure of this factory in April for operating illegally, an order that was evidently ignored. Pol. Col. Arun stated that both factories were suspected to be operated by Chinese nationals. He assured that the police would locate and prosecute those responsible for the illegal activities at the Nakhon Pathom factory. “Aluminium dross is harmful to health if it contaminates air and water. It can irritate the eyes and skin and affect respiratory systems. The police are committed to addressing these environmental crimes and ensuring those responsible are held accountable.” Industrial works officials have yet to assess the operations in Samut Sakhon, reported Bangkok Post. OIC plans committee to oversee actuaries’ licences in Thailand Picture courtesy of Kindel Media official website The Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC) is contemplating the establishment of a screening committee empowered to suspend or revoke the licences of actuarial mathematicians in a bid to mitigate risks to insurance firms and policyholders. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335286-oic-plans-committee-to-oversee-actuaries’-licences-in-thailand/ -
The Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC) is contemplating the establishment of a screening committee empowered to suspend or revoke the licences of actuarial mathematicians in a bid to mitigate risks to insurance firms and policyholders. Assistant Secretary-General of the OIC, Ayusri Kambamlue, stated that the office aims to enhance the protection of insured individuals’ benefits and elevate actuarial standards. Insurance reserve calculations must adhere to actuarial science principles, necessitating actuaries with the requisite knowledge, understanding, and experience, said Ayusri. “The insurance reserve is integral to the risk-based capital framework, which influences an insurance company’s financial strength. If an insured person is eligible for compensation, insurance companies must have sufficient funds to pay the insured and accurately calculate the reserves required for future payments.” Actuaries licensed by the OIC must adhere to professional standards and uphold the ethics of the actuarial profession as stipulated by the OIC. To maintain high standards and ethics among actuaries in Thailand, it is essential to implement a mechanism for monitoring their performance. The regulator sanctioned the formation of a committee to review the suspension or revocation of actuaries’ licences. This committee will comprise representatives from the OIC, relevant associations, and academic experts, who will assess and investigate the actions of actuaries, potentially leading to the suspension or revocation of their licences. For instance, in certain situations, actuaries may calculate insurance reserves that fail to meet the OIC’s operating standards, potentially jeopardising the adequacy of a company’s insurance reserves needed to compensate policyholders, Ayusri noted. “The OIC anticipates that this committee will help sustain the high standards of actuaries’ performance in Thailand and contribute to the stable and sustainable growth of the insurance industry in the future.” Ayusri acknowledged that in the past, some insurance companies faced severe liquidity issues due to a significant number of insurance claims, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Actuaries should evaluate the business’s balance sheet and assess risks associated with a high volume of claims to ensure the company maintains sufficient capital, Ayusri emphasised, reported Bangkok Post. The Government of Thailand is set to introduce a bill aimed at enhancing the quality of life and providing welfare protection for the country’s 20 million informal workers, including Internet influencers and farmers who currently lack access to a social safety net. Labour Ministry spokesperson Phumiphat Mueanchan announced that the ministry is advancing the bill to the Cabinet for approval before it proceeds to Parliament. This new legislation seeks to encompass independent workers such as farmers, freelancers, vendors, artists, actors, YouTubers, influencers, and food delivery riders within a formal social welfare scheme. These groups now represent a significant portion of the workforce, yet are not formally recognised under current labour laws. Phumiphat highlighted that, due to this lack of formal recognition, these workers are not entitled to universal state health insurance or other basic labour rights. “The bill aims to provide social security coverage, ensure workplace safety, and protect the rights of these non-formal workers.” Moreover, the bill would enable the registration of non-formal workers, allowing the government to devise more precise policies, design benefits, and allocate appropriate budgets based on the submitted information. Labour Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn recently endorsed the Kru Kor project, which aims to train 75,249 local community leaders and volunteers nationwide. This initiative is intended to disseminate information about the bill to informal workers, ensuring they register promptly once the new law is enacted, reported Bangkok Post. Many individuals have become wary and have started avoiding answering calls from unfamiliar numbers. The cybercriminals behind these scams often target a wide range of victims, not just older people. According to a post by the Facebook page Kan Jom Phalang, there is a straightforward method to filter out suspicious phone numbers and determine if they are from call centre scammers or real people. One easy method is to simply hang up the call. If the call is from a regular person, you should be able to call back. However, if it is from a call centre scam, you won’t be able to return the call. The reason you cannot call back is that scammers use special equipment to make their calls, rather than traditional telephones. Additionally, some call centre scammers impersonate officials using fake Facebook or LINE accounts to make video calls, which are also fraudulent. The Facebook post advised… “Just hang up and try calling back. If it’s a legitimate call, you’ll be able to reconnect. If not, it’s likely a scam.” By following these simple steps, people can protect themselves from falling victim to these fraudulent schemes. It’s important to stay vigilant and cautious, especially when dealing with unknown numbers, reported Sanook.
