  1. An individual accidentally left behind 40 baht worth of gold in their car at a Chachoengsao car wash. The incident caused panic when the customer couldn't find the gold at their residence. The car wash owner narrated the wavering moment via a Facebook post and also uncovered the substantial worth of the gold. A regular customer at the RS CarWash & Detailing Bangpakong, located in the Tha Sa An, Bang Pakong district, Chachoengsao province, had a fright when he realized he had left behind 40 baht worth of gold in his car. The car wash owner, Assana Arty S, mentioned it on August 7 in a Facebook post, detailing the occurrence. On this particular incidence, the customer's spouse had placed the gold in the car when it was taken for cleaning. They later commenced a frantic search at home and asked the car owner about the gold's location when they didn't find it. The couple finally figured that it was left at the car wash. Remembering the incident, the owner of the car wash pointed out the customer's initial panic when they discovered that the gold was not with them. The owner said, "The customer forgot about the gold in the car. They returned only to confirm their suspicion, and they were very surprised when it was found. I was also shocked when I understood the value of the gold, equivalent to leaving around a million baht in the car." The gold, which is worth over 1.6 million baht, was safely returned to the customer. There was no uncertainty of it getting lost, the owner emphasized, signaling the reliability and trustworthiness of their service. 3. The Constitutional Court of Thailand today announced a verdict to dissolve the Move Forward Party (MFP) over their efforts to reform the lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Law, and ban the managing executives of the party for 10 years. In April, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) requested that the Constitutional Court consider dissolving the MFP due to its promotion of the reformation of Section 112 during last year’s General Election. The ECT argued that these reforms posed a threat to both the monarchy and the democratic form of government with the king as head of state. After five months of deliberation and rescheduling the verdict announcement, the Constitutional Court delivered its decision at 3pm today, agreeing with the ECT to dissolve the party. In addition to the dissolution, the court imposed a 10-year ban on 11 members of the party’s executive teams who held positions between March 25, 2021, and July 31, 2024. The list of affected party members includes: The first party leader – Pita Limjaroenrat The first Secretary-General of the party and the second party leader – Chaithawat Tulathon The Party Treasurer – Nateepat Kulsetthasith The Party Member Register – Nakornpong Suppanimitr The Northern Executive Committee – Padipat Suntiphada The Southern Executive Committee – Somchai Fangchonlajit The Central Executive Committee – Amarat Chokepamitkul The Northeastern Executive Committee and second Secretary-General of the party – Apichat Sirisoontron The Eastern Executive Committee – Bencha Saengchantra The Labour Department Executive Committee – Suthep U-on The Executive Committee – Apisit Promrit These 11 members are now banned for 10 years from serving as MPs, forming a new political party, joining the executive management team of any political party, or participating in the establishment of a new political party. Following the dissolution, the MFP now has 142 Members of Parliament (MPs), and each MP must seek a new political party within 60 days to avoid losing their status. They would also have to select the new party leader to work during their transitions. One MFP MP, Jirat Thongsuwan, told the media recently that an assistant to a minister asked him to join his party for 30 million baht. Parliament also has to select a new Vice President of the House of Representatives as the former Vice President Padipat was one of those banned. The official MFP Facebook account shared a video after their dissolution with a caption that said, “In this world, there are some things that cannot be destroyed and cannot perish but will continue to grow without stopping. A new journey has begun. Let’s move forward together, people.” Deprose Muchena, Senior Director at Amnesty International slammed the court’s decision. “The Constitutional Court’s ruling in favour of dissolving the Move Forward Party is an untenable decision that reveals the authorities’ complete disregard for Thailand’s international human rights obligations. “Dissolving the party merely for advocating legal reforms constitutes a serious violation of the rights to freedom of expression and association against lawmakers who were simply performing their duty of proposing laws. “The authorities’ relentless harassment of the political opposition represents a stark contradiction, as Thailand has publicly committed to global leadership on human rights by applying for a seat at the UN Human Rights Council. Thai authorities must urgently reverse the dissolution and stop weaponising laws to intimidate and harass critics, human rights defenders and opposition politicians.” By Petch Petpailin Photo by Sakchai Lalit via AP Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-07 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 4. Thai woman wonders about paying friend for regular work lifts File photo for reference only A lady from Thailand recently took to an online forum to ask if it was correct to financially compensate her friend for giving her a lift to work during heavy rainfall. 5. A lady from Thailand recently took to an online forum to ask if it was correct to financially compensate her friend for giving her a lift to work during heavy rainfall. The woman was unsure if the 100 baht she paid for each journey for fuel was above board and was perplexed about the etiquette surrounding this situation. On August 2nd, in a disagreement over transport matters, she shared her situation on the Pantip forum. The lady who works part-time at a bar in Lampang, usually uses her motorcycle for commuting to work. However, during the rainy season she decided against traveling the 7-kilometer distance on her bike due to safety reasons and also to avoid getting wet. Subsequently, she requested a male friend who lived close by to drop her off at work. He agreed to do so and she used to pick her up at 5pm and drop her home at 12:30am. Things went smoothly until, after the second drive, her friend asked for money towards fuel. Initially she assumed it was a one-time request, but her friend continued to ask her for 100 baht every time he drove her. Perplexed by this, she asked their common friends if this was routine behavior. She came to know that this friend usually expected others to contribute towards fuel for drives. While she normally paid the fuel money, she felt the amount asked was too high especially considering the recent increase in fuel prices. She questioned whether it was appropriate to always give money to a friend, considering it as a matter of courtesy. Most online users empathized with the friend who was giving her the lifts, noting that he was not her personal driver and using his car required fuel which costs money. Moreover, the time he took out of his routine to ferry her was also a sacrifice. Users pointed out the difference between asking a friend for an occasional lift, and taking advantage of their generosity too often. The majority suggested her to consider using a taxi service instead, as it wasn't her friend's duty to transport her to work, as reported by KhaoSod. Some comments said, “It's reasonable for your friend to ask for fuel money. It's not just about the cash but also the time and effort he puts in for you.” “Perhaps it's time to seek alternative transportation. Your friend seems to be helping you out often and might feel he's being imposed upon.” File photo for reference only -- 2024-08-07 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 7. A beauty queen from Ratchaburi surrendered herself to the authorities after realizing she was breaking the law by promoting gambling websites. Her actions highlight the need for influencers and freelancers to carefully evaluate their work activities. A post by Police Major General Chatpantakarn Klayklueng, Chief of the Technology Crime Suppression Division 1, indicated the beauty queen recognized the illegal nature of her activities and chose to surrender to the police. In an online video, Major General Chatpantakarn discussed the dangers of cybercrime and the role of police in tackling such issues. "A beauty queen from Ratchaburi has admitted that promoting gambling sites is illegal. We have already shut down tens of thousands of these websites," he said. Under the Thai Gambling Act of 1935, particularly Section 12, heavy penalties are prescribed for anyone found participating in, deceiving, or openly advertising gambling activities. Penalties can range from a three-month to a three-year prison term and fines from 500 to 5,000 baht (USD 14 to USD 140). Major General Chatpantakarn stressed the need to understand the seriousness of these offences. He urged people to report wrongdoings to the cyber police instead of waiting for an arrest. Even though the beauty queen's case serves as a warning, she is not exempt from facing legal consequences. Her decisions might potentially harm her future career, according to KhaoSod. In conclusion, Major General Chatpantakarn issued a broad cautionary message to influencers and freelancers to diligently scrutinize their work, bearing in mind the potential ramifications. "Consider the consequences before accepting any job,” he said. 9. A murderer is on the run after killing a 71-year-old Thai woman in her home in Chiang Rai, a northern province, and making off with her gold necklace. The victim, Sa-ngiam Kunnana, was reported dead by her younger brother, Prasit Sanukun, 58, at Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station on August 6. Sa-ngiam's lifeless body was found in her house after Prasit and a neighbour broke in as there was no response from the inside. Prasit informed the police and the media outlet ThaiRath that Sa-ngiam was last seen attending a relative’s funeral on August 4, and was expected to be part of the cremation ceremony the following day, but she didn’t turn up. Prasit decided to check on her after the cremation finished around 3pm. Prasit, upon finding the house locked and unresponsive, suspected something amiss and took the help of the neighbour to break into the house. The police reported evidence of a theft and a struggle, with the killer leaving bloody footprints on the floor. Sa-ngiam usually wore three pieces of gold jewelry: a necklace, a ring, and a bracelet. According to the police report, only her gold necklace was missing, while her cash, amounting to 20,000 baht resting in her bedside table, was left untouched. Community leader Luan Piraban disclosed to the media that Sa-ngiam lived alone as her two children resided in Mahasarakham province and her granddaughter in Phuket. Her house being secluded, nobody heard any noises or calls for help. Piraban also mentioned that the community, shocked by the awful incident, had not experienced such crimes before. He also cautioned residents against wearing valuable jewelry to avoid drawing criminals' attention. While the suspect's identity remains unknown, the police are focusing their investigation on a 30-year-old local man with a drug history who vanished from the community a week before the crime. 11. Security forces in Thailand’s southern province of Pattani engaged in a fierce clash with a group of insurgents in the Khlong Chang area, resulting in three insurgents being killed. This incident follows a sequence of violent events linked to the insurgents over several years. The confrontation occurred during a law enforcement operation in Khlong Chang, Naket subdistrict, Khok Pho district, Pattani province when officers encountered resistance from armed insurgents. The exchange of gunfire led to the deaths of three insurgents and one officer, with two additional officers sustaining injuries. These events unfolded over several days, concluding recently. The spokesperson for the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4, Colonel Ekwarit Chobchuphol, revealed that forensic experts examined evidence collected from the scene. They identified 12 5.56mm shell casings fired from an AK-102 assault rifle. This particular weapon was linked to 20 previous violent incidents in the region. The first notable incident involved the shooting of Tamizi Uma, who died, and Panjiha Ali, who was injured on a rural road in Plong Hoi, Kapho district, Pattani, in November 2015. This marked the beginning of a series of violent acts attributed to the same insurgents. In June 2016, insurgents opened fire on paramilitary rangers on a road in Ban Kok Wu, Kapho district, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. Later that year, in November, Prasan Tiemyam was injured in a shooting on the same road. The violence continued in September 2018 when insurgents fired shots near a special task force base in Krube district, Pattani. A few months later, in August 2018, Lukman Mawesa, a local volunteer, was injured in a shooting in Plong Hoi. Further incidents More incidents followed, including an attack on a police officer, Makori Niden, in April 2019, which left him injured while driving in Taling Chan, Sai Buri district. In July 2019, Arthis Sudsaeng, a district officer, was shot on Road 42 in Taling Chan. In December 2019, Somdet Khaonam and Pe Tanmongkol were shot while driving a truck in Lahan, Pattani. In February 2020, Adilan Deng was injured in a shooting while driving a car on a road in Terabon, Sai Buri district. Further incidents included shootings near police bases, attacks on border patrol officers, and the killing of Bukori Toya in June 2023 in Bare Tai, Bajoh district, Narathiwat. In August 2023, insurgents damaged a paramilitary vehicle and injured two officers in Taling Chan. In October 2023, an attack in Kadunong, Sai Buri district, left Firhan injured while sitting at a tea shop. The following month, a local defence volunteer, 39 year old Ropi Uma was killed while riding his motorcycle in Sai Buri. In January, Araman Lunte was injured in a shooting in Krube, Kapho district. Later that month, another volunteer, Aliyas Riji, was injured in a shooting in Hu Taemajai, Kadunong. In June, Muhammad Makri Mahama was shot while riding his motorcycle in Paseyawor, Sai Buri. The most recent incident before the current clash occurred in July when insurgents shot and killed Malomlee Late in Luboyirai, Mayo district, Pattani, reported KhaoSod. 13. A massage therapist was lured into a cassava field, assaulted, and robbed by an assailant, with the victim hiding in the grass until dawn before seeking help. The incident occurred yesterday, August 6, at 8.05am, with the victim filing a complaint at Nong Prue Police Station. The 45 year old victim, Ya (pseudonym), arrived at the police station in a battered state, her face swollen and clothes torn. She claimed she was lured into a secluded area, attacked, and robbed of her cash and mobile phone. Ya recounted her ordeal. She had recently moved to Pattaya to work as a massage therapist. Around 4am, while sitting and drinking at Jomtien Beach, a Thai man approached her, pretending to be friendly. He then concocted a story about a foreigner requesting a massage at a nearby residence, convincing her to accompany him on his motorcycle sidecar. Ya explained that she trusted the man and got on the motorcycle, hoping to earn some money before returning home. However, after travelling a short distance, the sidecar’s tyre burst. Sensing something was amiss, she asked the man if the route was correct. The man insisted that the nearby houses belonged to foreigners. After getting back on the motorcycle, the man sped up despite the flat tyre, eventually turning into a dark cassava field. Unable to see clearly, Ya realised she was in danger. The man then punched her in the face, assaulted her, and snatched her handbag containing approximately 4,000 baht and a Vivo mobile phone. Fighting for her life, Ya escaped and hid in the grass, fearing the man would return. “I hid until dawn, then sought help from a foreign jogger. If I hadn’t escaped, I might have been killed or worse.” Following the attack, Nong Prue’s investigation team took Ya to the crime scene in Soi 18, Thung Klom Tan Man, about 800 metres from the main road. Signs of the motorcycle’s path were evident, and the police found the suspect’s shoes and a condom Ya had been carrying. A donation receipt for a coffin was also found, which Ya had kept after praying for a better life in Pattaya for herself and her family. The police collected all evidence from the scene, including latent fingerprints, and are reviewing CCTV footage along the escape route to track down the assailant, reported KhaoSod. 15. Thai police dismantled a major online vaping operation, seizing over 24,000 items from a townhouse in Din Daeng, Bangkok. Officers described it as the largest bust of its kind this year. The raid, conducted yesterday, August 6, at 1pm, was led by high-ranking officials, including Nirandon Lueamsri, Deputy Commissioner of Police, and Thanakrit Jittareerat, Assistant to the Minister of Public Health. They announced the arrest of individuals involved in the illegal sale of electronic cigarettes via online platforms. Nirandon disclosed that the police received a tip-off about an online store named 33VAPE selling e-cigarettes through the LINE app. After a month-long investigation, police pinpointed a two-storey townhouse in Din Daeng as the storage and distribution hub for the illicit products. The operation catered to customers online and supplied smaller retailers across Bangkok. Officers observed a 23 year old man, Phakawat, delivering a large rainbow-coloured sack to a motorcycle taxi parked outside the townhouse on Monday, August 5. Police intervened, finding a substantial amount of vaping products in the parcel. Phakawat admitted to having more items inside the house and led the officers in. Inside, they found 41 year old Phakjira, Phakawat’s sister, who was overseeing the operation. The search revealed a massive haul: 11,261 e-liquid pods, 5,611 bottles of e-liquid, 2,750 disposable e-cigarettes, 454 vaping devices, 4,431 coils, and 37 chargers. The total value of the seized items was estimated at 5 million baht. The suspects were taken to Huai Khwang Police Station for further investigation under Section 246 of the Customs Act of 2017. Police stated that this seizure was the largest of the year and noted that the e-cigarettes were imported legally from neighbouring countries before being sold illegally in Thailand. Police are now working to trace the operation’s masterminds. They urged the public to report any information about illegal e-cigarette sales to the national hotline at 1599. During the interrogation, the suspects claimed they were hired by a man named Arm to package and distribute the vaping products. They received a monthly salary of 15,000 baht. The townhouse had been operating for about two years, establishing itself as a major distributor in Bangkok, reported KhaoSod. 17. A prisoner in Bang Kwang Central Prison has been charged with drugging and sexually assaulting a fellow inmate. Despite reporting the incident to prison staff, no action was initially taken, leading to further harassment and severe emotional distress for the victim. The incident occurred in a cell at Bang Kwang Central Prison on January 7. The victim decided to seek help by submitting a formal complaint to the Lawyers Council of Thailand. This led to unanimous support from the council to form a legal team to assist the victim. The Deputy Superintendent of Investigation at Nonthaburi City Police Station, Bamphen Wairojchana, yesterday, August 6, revealed that he entered the prison to interrogate all relevant witnesses, including seven prison officers and four inmates, comprising the perpetrator, the victim, and two other cellmates. The investigation confirmed the victim’s allegations, resulting in charges of sexual assault being filed against the accused on July 23. Fingerprinting of the accused was completed recently, and the case file is expected to be forwarded to the prosecutor within the week. Bamphen further explained that the victim had claimed the perpetrator had secretly administered sleeping pills. Upon investigation, it was found that the incident took place in a highly controlled section of the prison, which is known for strict regulations against contraband. This made it unlikely for the sleeping pills to have been smuggled in. However, the victim’s mental health improved after seeing active steps being taken to address his complaint, reducing his anxiety over the fairness of the investigation. The prison staff have since separated the three involved inmates to prevent further conflict. Sexual assault A background check on the accused revealed a history of multiple offences, including drug-related crimes and theft in various locations. In October 2020, he was arrested for stealing from a government office using a vehicle to facilitate the crime, leading to his detention at Nonthaburi Provincial Prison. The accused later suffered a ruptured appendix and was taken to Phra Nang Klao Hospital for surgery, monitored closely by prison staff. During a shift change, he managed to escape but was soon recaptured and transferred to Bang Kwang Central Prison. It was here that he committed the assault, subsequently bullying the victim by loudly proclaiming ownership over him as a wife, causing the victim immense shame and stress to the point of suicidal thoughts, reported KhaoSod. The victim then sought justice through the Lawyers Council of Thailand to ensure the perpetrator faced legal consequences for his actions. 19. Thailand’s Department of Intellectual Property teamed up with the Economic Crime Suppression Division and representatives from several companies to crack down on counterfeit engine parts and shampoos. Officials seized 12,183 items, worth over 10 million baht, in an operation aimed at protecting consumers from dangerous, substandard products. Arwut Wongsawat, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property, revealed the collaborative effort. They partnered with the Economic Crime Suppression Division, rights holders, and authorised representatives from companies such as Tilleke & Gibbins International Ltd. and The Procter & Gamble Company Ltd. The joint operation was meticulously planned to address the issue of counterfeit goods, which posed significant risks to consumers. The seized items included fake engine parts and counterfeit shampoos bearing several trademarked brands. Police estimated the total damage at over 10 million baht. The department has continually prioritised the prevention and suppression of intellectual property violations, particularly those involving everyday consumer goods. Counterfeit products of this nature often fail to meet safety standards and may contain harmful chemicals, posing serious health risks to consumers. Enforcing the law against offenders is crucial in combating intellectual property violations. Beyond legal measures, the department is also focused on raising awareness among businesses about the importance of selling legitimate products. This dual approach aims to reduce the circulation of counterfeit goods in the market and safeguard consumers from the dangers associated with substandard products. “The joint operation stemmed from the discovery of fake shampoos made by refilling branded shampoo bottles with homemade chemical mixtures and selling them at lower prices. Additionally, counterfeit engine parts, such as bearings, piston rods, crankshaft pins, oil filters, and air filters, were distributed to auto parts dealers nationwide.” The operation confiscated 12,183 items, accumulating losses worth over 10 million baht. Consumer protection These counterfeit items, although similar in appearance to genuine products, do not meet safety standards and are extremely hazardous to consumers. Police urge consumers to exercise caution when purchasing low-priced goods, as they may present unforeseen dangers. Consumers should buy products from reputable sources, inspect the packaging for quality, and avoid items priced significantly below market value. The penalties for selling counterfeit trademarked goods are severe, with offenders facing up to four years in prison, fines up to 400,000 baht, or both. For selling copyright-infringing goods, the maximum penalty is four years in prison, or fines up to 800,000 baht, or both. The public is encouraged to report any discoveries of counterfeit goods through the Department of Intellectual Property’s website or hotline, reported KhaoSod. 21. Locals in the northern province of Mae Hong Son accused a Thai man of killing his wife by stuffing a ping pong bomb in her mouth due to drunkenness and jealousy. The accused man denied all allegations. Officers from the Mok Cham Pae Police Station were called to a house in the Mueang district of Mae Hong Son province today, August 6, to investigate the death of 53 year old Thai woman, Luen, who died last night. Luen had severe injuries to her mouth and face. Her head was covered in blood, and some of her teeth were found on her bedroom floor. Officers also found ping pong bomb fragments and unused ping pong bombs at the scene. A community leader told police that Luen’s husband, 54 year old Yon, reported his wife’s death to him in the middle of the night. He decided not to call the police immediately due to the darkness potentially hindering the investigation. According to the community leader, Yon claimed he woke to find his wife dead. He suspected an intruder killed her. Channel 7 reported that Yon sat away from the scene during the police investigation, with a neutral expression and seemingly uninterested in the process. The couple’s daughter, 24 year old Song, arrived from another community, crying and accusing her father of being the killer. Luen’s neighbours and locals agreed with Song, believing Yon placed the ping pong bomb in the deceased’s mouth while she slept before reporting the fake fatal assault to the community leader. Locals told Channel 7 that Yon often argued with his wife when drunk and was very jealous. He did not want his wife to leave home but Luen liked to visit the temple and sometimes stayed overnight for Dhamma retreats. Luen had just returned from a retreat when the incident occurred. Locals added that people in the area loved Luen for her kind nature and did not believe anyone would intentionally harm her. The family was not wealthy and had no valuables, so locals were certain that theft was not a motive. Police transferred Luen’s body to a hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Officers will question Yon further and search for more evidence at the scene. 25. The Transport Ministry has started a study to see if it's practical to move Bangkok Port from the Klong Toey district. This is in response to a public survey showing strong approval for the project. Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri announced this on Monday (Aug 4). She said the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) and other related sectors are re-examining plans to fulfill the public's wishes and improve the port's functionality. The project, first introduced at a cabinet meeting on April 2, proposes moving the large port facility out of central Bangkok. The goal is to reduce pollution and traffic congestion. The project got more support when a survey by North Bangkok University showed that 70.7% of 2,500 people asked would like the relocation to happen. They think this change would lessen traffic jam and air pollution and could help the local economy through the Bangkok Port Redevelopment project. According to the proposal, the port's land would be split into seven parts. The biggest of these, covering 934.2 rai of land, will keep its original purpose as the PAT's operational ground, mainly for customs. Around 673 rai will be for rent, with 152 rai for public use and 521 rai for private use. The redevelopment plan also includes turning 232 rai of the Klong Toey slums and 203 rai meant for transportation facilities into five new areas. These will include office buildings, health care facilities, smart homes, retail spaces, an exhibition center, a sports center, a park, and a smart port with a semi-automated cargo system and a cruise terminal.
