Minister Sutin encourages all of Thailand to support Suwannapheng, adding that all Olympic-level boxers have skills, but boxing is a part of Thai heritage. He expressed confidence in her ability to emerge victorious in the upcoming match. Suwannapheng, 23, has claimed medals twice in world championships and came in second place at the Hangzhou Asian Games the previous year. She has previously matched up against Khelif, who bested her in the world championships last year. Despite acknowledging Khelif's strength, Suwannapheng believes she is well-prepared for the upcoming match. There were eight Thai boxers -- three men and five women -- sent to Paris for the competition, and Suwannapheng is the only one remaining in the tournament. 4. On August 7, 2024, Thailand's Constitutional Court is set to give a definitive judgement on the request of the Election Commission to disband the Move Forward Party (MFP). This follows a complaint made by Thirayuth Suwankaesoorn against the MFP's campaigning to change Section 112 of the Penal Code. Previously, Pita Limjaroenrat, a parliament member and senior advisor of the MFP, asked ambassadors from 18 countries to monitor the case and its verdict. These events will take place tomorrow, August 7, 2024. Today, August 6, 2024, national Thai media discussed the issue with Wissanu Krea-ngam, an advisor to the Prime Minister. In the interview, Wissanu said it is a regular practice for diplomats to form relationships and collect information. He said their engagement does not equate to meddling in domestic matters. Wissanu has been asked to participate in talks with foreign diplomats, even after resigning from his position. He stressed that such meetings are ordinary and informal. When asked if it was the government's job to make issues clear to diplomats, Wissanu said that while it's considered a minor diplomatic duty, it is standard practice for diplomats to receive news and develop relationships in various ways. Concerning the apprehensions that disbanding the MFP might tarnish Thailand's reputation, particularly its legal system and democracy, Wissanu played down any significant effects. He stated it would only pertain to the specific situation of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, reported The Pattaya News. 6. On August 6, 2024, Thawatchai Thaikhiew, a deputy spokesperson of the Police Civil Service Commission (PCSC), shared on Facebook that the dismissal of Police General Surachate Hakparn, also known as "Big Joke," was upheld. Hakparn was earlier suspended from his duties. The validity of Hakparn's dismissal, initially approved by Police General Kittirat Phanphet, was under the commission's review. The PCSC met to consider the highly publicized case and has informed both Hakparn, who appealed against the decision, and the National Police Office, to which the appeal was made. Hakparn appealed his dismissal on April 18, 2024, arguing the decision was illegal and demanded it be revoked. The case attracted significant public and media attention, with many debating the legalities and facts of the case. After a detailed investigation, which involved listening to both sides and examining the evidence, the PCSC concluded that Hakparn's dismissal was conducted lawfully and with valid reasoning. The commission affirmed the original decision to suspend Hakparn from his duties. The PCSC rejected Hakparn's appeal and his request for provisional actions. However, Hakparn maintains the right to take his case to the Supreme Administrative Court within the next 90 days if he disagrees with the decision, reported The Pattaya News. 8. Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has recently had talks with his South Korean counterpart, Cho Tae-yul. The focus of their discussion was the travel issues faced by Thai citizens due to South Korea's strict entry policies. According to a report from the Yonhap news agency, the meeting took place last week. Maris has asked that the rules under South Korea's Electronic Travel Authorization (known as K-ETA) be eased. While the K-ETA system does provide initial approval for travelers, it does not promise entry into the country. This policy has led to many Thai tourists getting turned away at South Korean airports. This restriction has triggered a social media campaign in Thailand urging travelers to consider other destinations. As a result, there has been a 21% decrease in Thai tourists visiting South Korea in the first four months of 2024 compared to the same period last year. South Korea's strict entry regulations are a part of its efforts to prevent illegal immigration and unauthorized work issues. The Thai community has been a particular area of focus. During a meeting in Seoul earlier in February, South Korean officials explained that their rigorous entry checks were necessary due to the increased number of Thai people living in the country without the correct documentation. Despite these difficulties, South Korea has shown willingness to work towards a solution. They have expressed their desire to work with Thailand in a constructive way to resolve these travel-related issues, and diplomatic discussions are ongoing. 10. A 29-year-old man has been caught in Phuket after a two-year-long search concerning his role in modifying and selling guns on Facebook. The man, known as Kittiphon or Tom, evaded arrest by moving around, from Phang Nga to Phuket. Officers from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) arrested Kittiphon on August 3, in front of a house he rented in Ratsada. He had been on the run since a warrant for his arrest was issued by the Phang Nga Provincial Court on September 8, 2022. Kittiphon came under suspicion when police traced weapons used by teenagers in northeastern Thailand back to him. The modified guns, originally blank-firing, were being sold through Facebook livestreams. This initiated an inquiry that led the police to a house in Tambon Na Toei, a district in Phang Nga province. The police recovered over 100 weapons, ammunition, and fake guns during the investigation. Sensing the police closing in, Kittiphon fled from the location before a thorough search could be conducted. Based on the evidence found at the crime scene, the Thai Mueang Police Station issued an arrest warrant, but Kittiphon had already vanished. The CSD Division 5 officers later located Kittiphon in his rented house in Ratsada and effectively arrested him. He was then taken to Thai Mueang Police Station for further legal action. According to the CIB report, Kittiphon pleaded guilty to all charges during initial questioning. He disclosed that he, along with a partner, had altered the blank-firing guns to shoot live bullets and had sold about 300 of these illegal weapons through social media. After the police investigation, both Kittiphon and his partner stopped their unlawful activities. 12. A stunned homeowner from Chon Buri is seeking answers after being handed a massive water bill of over 163,000 baht for just one month's usage. As word about the exorbitant invoice twitched on social media, especially on the News Chon Buri-Rayong Online Facebook page, more attention was drawn to the individual's predicament. The water bill, corresponding to July, totaled an alarming 163,767.51 baht, an unusual amount considering only one occupant lives in the house. The baffled homeowner has requested an investigation, questioning the correctness of the meter reading and the probability of a billing error. Shockingly, the homeowner shared, "Our water bill for the month was 163,000 baht. How is it feasible? The total is higher than the whole village's combined water charges. Could the meter reading be mistaken?" The unheard-of bill precipitated a flood of comments, thoughts, and concerns on social media. Many are speculating that a mistake in the meter reading or a glitch in the billing system might be the culprit. "What type of water usage could lead to such a bill? They must've entered the numbers wrongly. How did they overlook such an abnormality?" were some of the common queries. Several individuals recommended legal recourse, underscoring the seriousness of the ordeal. "File a lawsuit against the person responsible for the meter reading," opined one; "The reader surely needs to be taken to task for this blunder. This is a matter of money," added another. Anticipating a resolution to the uproar, local officials and the water company are now expected to examine the complaint and explain how such a considerable error could occur. 14. The province of Chiang Rai was hit by two earthquakes of 1.4 magnitude each within a span of an hour. There were no immediate reports of any tremors after the quakes. The first 1.4 magnitude earthquake took place at 1.59am today, August 6, according to the Earthquake Surveillance Division of the Meteorological Department. The epicenter was located in the Pong Phrae subdistrict, Mae Lao district, approximately 4 kilometers beneath the earth's surface. Initial reports did not indicate any tremors. The second earthquake, also tracked at a magnitude of 1.4, occurred at 2.36am. Its epicenter was in the Saai Khao subdistrict, Phan district, merely 1 kilometer below the surface. This location is a bit southeast from where the first quake originated. There were also no immediate reports of tremors from this quake. Earthquakes are not unusual for Chiang Rai province, which is situated in northern Thailand. The relatively weak magnitudes of these recent quakes suggest they were minor. Even though these earthquakes occurred closely in time and location, there were no immediate reports of any damages or injuries. Local government officials alongside the Earthquake Surveillance Division are closely monitoring the situation. While the region has faced more significant seismic events in the past, these recent quakes are a reminder of the area's geological instability. People living in Chiang Rai province are being encouraged to remain vigilant, but not to panic, as these quakes were of a low magnitude. It is always recommended to take precautions in such scenarios. Local government officials are making sure that all required protocols are ready in case of any aftershocks or future earthquakes. Residents felt a minor shake, but it wasn't cause for concern. They praised the authorities for their swift response and regular updates. The occurrence of these earthquakes hasn't raised significant worries, but they do underscore the need for earthquake readiness in the region. Buildings in areas prone to earthquakes are commonly built to withstand such minor shakes, ensuring the safety of inhabitants. 16. A shocking case of road rage happened at a traffic junction in San Sai, Chiang Mai, where a knife-wielding man threatened another driver. The incident happened late on Saturday, August 3, and gained a lot of attention after it was posted on social media. Beat, the 26-year-old driver who posted the video, shared the events that led to the alarming encounter. He was on his way home from a friend’s place when he noticed a pickup truck pass him and then move into his lane. Beat honked his horn to alert the driver of his presence, which provoked an angry reaction. The pickup driver responded by honking back, shouting insults and asking Beat to stop his car. When Beat stopped, he was confronted by the older man, who appeared drunk, and was waving a long knife. The man accused Beat of driving slowly in the right lane. Even after Beat explained he wasn't blocking traffic, the older man kept challenging him. To avoid escalating the situation, Beat returned to his car. Even though the man followed him, Beat managed to leave by making a U-turn. Beat shared his story on his personal Facebook page as a warning to other drivers. His post attracted a lot of attention, with other people sharing similar experiences with the same man. One commented that they had also been threatened in the same place by the man but had not confronted him because they had a child in the car. After the strong reaction to his post, Beat reported the case to the San Sai Police Station. The police have identified the aggressive driver as a 56-year-old from Phan district, Chiang Rai, using the vehicle’s license plate. Beat said he just wanted to warn others about the danger. "It's not safe to have someone like that on the road, especially if they're carrying a weapon," he added. Police are now looking into the incident, and the knife-wielding driver may face charges. This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of road rage and the importance of staying calm even in tense situations. The local community is urged to report similar experiences to ensure that the roads are safe for everyone. 18. A neighbourhood in Lat Phrao district, Bangkok, is living in distress as one household has been relentlessly throwing stones at other houses in the area. Despite numerous complaints and attempts to resolve the situation, the issue persists. Tanongsak, a local living in the Prasert-Manukit 27 area, Soi 226, reported that his house has been a daily target of stone attacks for over a year. Initially, he attributed the noise to debris hitting the roof. But in April, a leak prompted him to call a repairman, who found a bunch of stones and some metal nuts on the roof. Speaking to his neighbours, Tanongsak realized they were also being targeted. He noted that a house behind his had a pile of stones similar to those found on his roof. The household head of the suspected perpetrating family claimed innocence, stating that their house had also been under stone attack. Tanongsak stated that the stone-throwing usually happened around 5 am and 7 pm. On May 12, he reported the issue to the Khok Kram Police Station, but without any tangible evidence like CCTV footage or eyewitness accounts, the police were unable to act. To collect evidence, Tanongsak and his neighbours installed CCTV cameras around their homes. The cameras were deliberately placed to monitor the activities of the suspected house, despite their initial objections. CCTV footage recorded on August 3 showed the suspected individual coming out to smoke and then throwing a stone at Tanongsak’s house at around 7.42 pm. This video became the much-needed evidence of continuous harassment. Having lived there peacefully for over 20 years, Tanongsak expressed his shock, especially since the suspected house had been around for less than a decade. Neighbours describe the suspect as a large man in his forties who frequently hangs around suspiciously. They suspect that his parents might not be aware of his actions, as they haven't participated in any attempts to resolve the issue. It's also suspected that the man may have mental health issues, based on his erratic behaviour, including a disturbing incident when he exposed himself to a CCTV camera. Tanongsak and the neighbours suggest that if the man is indeed ill, his parents should seek help for him to prevent the situation from escalating further. Ekaphop Luangprasert, Minister of Interior's advisor and founder of the Saimai Must Survive Facebook page, has committed to coordinate with the superintendent of Khok Kram Police Station to hasten the resolution of the case. “I will visit the area with the police to negotiate with the household responsible for the stone-throwing today. If this behaviour continues, it could result in serious injuries, or even death," he warned. 19. Health Advisory: Thai Milk Tea May Lead to Kidney Stones File photo for reference only The Thai Department of Health has issued a health advisory to fans of Thai milk tea, warning them about the risk of kidney stone development due to high quantities of sugar, calcium, and compounds in tea leaves. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1334812-health-advisory-thai-milk-tea-may-lead-to-kidney-stones/
  20. The Thai Department of Health has issued a health advisory to fans of Thai milk tea, warning them about the risk of kidney stone development due to high quantities of sugar, calcium, and compounds in tea leaves. In a Facebook post, the Health Department cautioned daily consumers of milk tea about potential health hazards linked to their preferred drink. It mentioned that consistent intake of Thai milk tea may result in kidney stone formation. When urine minerals crystallize, they form kidney stones. These can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a ping-pong ball. These stones can block the urinary tract and can cause severe pain and potentially even lead to kidney failure, said a Health Department representative. Thai milk tea, often linked to weight gain, also carries a hidden risk - kidney stones. The goal of the message was to raise awareness about how the well-liked cold milk tea could trigger serious health complications. Several components in Thai milk tea can fast-track the development of kidney stones. For example, fructose, a type of sugar present in milk tea, is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, burdening the kidneys and increasing the risk of stone formation. Moreover, some milk teas contain high calcium levels due to their milk content. The kidneys excrete excess calcium, which can solidify, creating stones. Tea leaves also contain oxalate, another contributing component for stone formation. Oxalate can combine with calcium to form calcium oxalate stones, a common type of kidney stone. To lower the risk, the Department of Health suggests multiple measures for milk tea enthusiasts. They recommend decreasing sugar intake by choosing less sweet or sugar-free alternatives and drinking plenty of water can dilute urine and diminish mineral crystallization. Switching to low-fat milk, skimmed milk, or soy milk can also reduce calcium intake. Consuming potassium-rich fruits and vegetables, like bananas and tomatoes, can further lower the probability of stone formation. 22. The Thailand Sporting Trade Association expects a surge in sports enthusiasm and the subsequent sales of sports equipment following Team Thailand's performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Kitti Charoenpornpanichkul, the association's president, stated that sports events featuring Thai medal winners generally garnered significant public attention. This popularity encourages fans to participate in these sports, leading to an increase in the sales of sports equipment. A good example of this phenomenon happened during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where a gold medal win in taekwondo by Panipak Wongpattanakit and a bronze medal by Sudaporn Seesondee in women’s lightweight boxing saw a significant rise in interest in these sports, especially amongst young people. Kitti also noted that, while the ongoing Olympics introduces an element of uncertainty in predicting which sports will become popular, sports merchandise like apparel and footwear are currently in high demand. Thailand team is assured of winning medals at the Paris Olympics. Kunlavut Vitidsarn made history being the first Thai men's singles player to reach the badminton finals. Meanwhile, Thai boxer, Janjaem Suwannapheng, has secured at least a bronze medal and is scheduled to go up against Algeria's Imane Khelif in the semi-finals. Thailand is represented at the Paris Olympics by 51 athletes participating in 17 different sports including boxing, weightlifting, taekwondo, athletics, shooting, and women's volleyball. Kongsak Yodmanee, the Sports Authority of Thailand's Governor, states their main concern is not winning medals. Instead, they focus on athletes striving to break records and perform better. According to different sports associations, the sports where Thai participants have the highest chances of bagging medals include taekwondo, badminton, weight lifting, golf, and boxing. The sports equipment market in Thailand is projected to grow by 10% from 2023 to a value of 33 billion baht by the end of the year. This growth is credited to health-conscious consumers and the state's digital handout scheme. 24. A woman from Thailand signed up for a 10,000 baht digital wallet on the Tang Rat app, instead she was notified of an unpaid traffic fine, stirring concerns about data privacy. This incident has alarmed the public and sparked debates over the security of personal details being given and linked to different databases during app registration. The woman divulged her ordeal online, sharing that after signing up to receive the 10,000 baht digital wallet, she was alerted to an unpaid traffic fine. She posted a screenshot of the notification and condemned the app's handling of her information. She disclosed that her father intended to settle the fine based on the app alert. The peculiar incident exhibits potential risks and unexpected repercussions linked with sharing personal information online. It has urged many individuals to reconsider the way they disclose their details and the trust they place in digital platforms. Despite the outcry, there has been no official response on the matter or any clarification regarding the data management and protection strategies in the Tang Rat app. The situation has ignited wider discussions about transparency and responsibility of digital services in handling user data. The incident raises significant questions not only about the Tang Rat app but also about the practice of data privacy and protection across Thailand. Users are advocating for more stringent rules to ensure their data is not misused or linked without their approval. In the meantime, authorities are urging individuals who have signed up or are thinking of registering for the digital wallet to remain vigilant and knowledgeable about how their data is used.
