  1. Registration for the digital wallet scheme surged to 5.8 million people within just three hours. Officials expected the number to hit 7 million by noon today, following the government’s launch of a scheme allowing citizens to claim 10,000 baht via a digital wallet through the Tang Rat application on smartphones. This initiative, open from today, August 1 to September 15, places no limits on the number of participants. The digital wallet scheme has captivated public interest, with overwhelming registration activity reported. This morning, Deputy Minister of Finance Phai Phum Rojanasakul provided an update on the registration progress. By 11am, three hours after the registration opened, 5.38 million people had already registered. It was highly expected that the number would reach 7 million by noon. For those experiencing difficulties registering, the issue often stems from residual data from an older version of the Tang Rat app. The solution is to delete and reinstall the app, then press the green button to register for the project. This problem is not due to a crash but because some users still have old data lingering in the app. Currently, the app is handling an influx of about 900,000 users every five minutes. Related news updates include guidance on how to claim the digital wallet benefits, with specific instructions for troubleshooting registration issues. For instance, users are advised to reinstall the Tang Rat app if they encounter problems. Further updates reveal that registration can be completed through various steps. Citizens are urged to follow the latest guidance to ensure eligibility for the 10,000 baht digital wallet. The results of the registration will be confirmed on September 22. Meanwhile, the government has also provided walk-in registration points for those who may not have access to smartphones or are facing technical challenges. This ensures that everyone has an opportunity to claim their digital wallet benefits. The digital wallet scheme has been designed to provide financial relief and boost economic activity. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to integrate digital solutions into everyday financial transactions, aiming to make them more accessible and secure for the general population. Phai Phum emphasised the importance of resolving technical issues promptly to facilitate smooth registration for all participants. He reassured the public that the technical team is actively working to address any glitches and ensure the app’s functionality remains stable amid high user traffic, reported KhaoSod. 3. A Thai man expressed feelings of failure after comparing his life to the successes of his peers. He chose a government job with a salary of 18,000 baht, while his university friends, who opted for private sector jobs, earned nearly 100,000 baht. The 28 year old Thai man took to the social media platform Pantip to voice his frustration. Seeing his university peers earning as much as 70,000 baht in the private sector, he lamented his choice of a government position, which offers a comparatively modest salary of 18,000 baht. The young man shared his sorrow over the disparity, questioning why their lives diverged so significantly despite having the same educational background. While his friends enjoy financial stability with houses and cars, he struggles to make ends meet. The thought of switching to the private sector scares him due to the uncertainty of being hired. He constantly wonders whether he made the right decision in choosing public service, yearning to rid himself of these feelings of regret and failure. After his post went live, it garnered overwhelming support from netizens who offered words of encouragement. Many highlighted that everything has its differences, from base salaries and benefits to job security, between the private and public sectors. They pointed out that individual circumstances vary and that being the same age does not necessitate having the same income. Comparing oneself to others, they suggested, only leads to unnecessary distress. Instead of dwelling on disappointment, they advised him to find ways to elevate his position. While he might not earn 70,000 baht like his friends, even a slight salary increase, combined with continuous self-development, could make a significant difference. “Every job has its advantages and drawbacks. Public sector jobs offer stability and benefits that private companies might not match. Focus on the positives and work on improving your situation gradually.” “Comparing yourself to others won’t change your circumstances. Find ways to improve your skills, and opportunities will come.” Many suggested that the young man should consider further education or training to enhance his qualifications, which could open doors to higher-paying positions within the public sector or even make him a more attractive candidate for private sector roles in the future, reported KhaoSod. “Your journey is unique. Don’t measure your success by someone else’s standards. Small steps towards improvement can lead to big changes over time.” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2024-08-01 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 4. Bhumjaithai eyes deputy House speaker role amid MFP uncertainty Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Bhumjaithai Party is reportedly eyeing the position of first deputy House speaker if the Move Forward Party (MFP) faces dissolution next week. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1334377-bhumjaithai-eyes-deputy-house-speaker-role-amid-mfp-uncertainty/
  5. Bhumjaithai Party is reportedly eyeing the position of first deputy House speaker if the Move Forward Party (MFP) faces dissolution next week. Currently, the role is held by Fair Party MP Padipat Suntiphada, who was originally a MFP MP for Phitsanulok province at the time of his nomination and selection. The law prohibits the main opposition party from having one of its members occupy a speaker or deputy speaker post. To keep his deputy speaker role and allow the party to lead the opposition, Padipat arranged his expulsion from the MFP. Should the Constitutional Court dissolve the MFP, Padipat, as a former party executive, will be banned from politics. This scenario would result in him losing his MP status and the deputy speaker position. The Election Commission (EC) brought the complaint to court, accusing the MFP of violating Section 92 of the organic law on political parties. Citing a court ruling from January 31, the EC pointed to the party’s attempts to amend Section 112 of the Criminal Code, the lese-majeste law, arguing it demonstrated an intention to undermine the constitutional monarchy. Additionally, the EC requested the court to ban the MFP’s executives from future elections and prohibit them from registering or serving as executives of a new party for a decade. Speculation is rife that Bhumjaithai, the second-largest coalition party, is positioning itself to claim the deputy House speaker’s post if it becomes vacant. House speaker void Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul remarked that any move to fill the post should adhere to regulations and political etiquette. Anutin highlighted that the roles of the House speaker and the first deputy had been predetermined last year before the formation of the government, a move he considered unusual. The Bhumjaithai leader referred to an agreement between the MFP and the Pheu Thai Party, which was made when they decided to form a government together after the General Election. Although the MFP failed to form a coalition government with Pheu Thai, it managed to secure the deputy speaker position for Padipat. Pheu Thai proceeded to form a government with other parties. House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, a former leader of the Prachachat Party, was nominated for his current role to resolve an impasse between Pheu Thai and the MFP, which was granted the first deputy speaker role, reported Bangkok Post. Anutin refrained from commenting on speculation that Bhumjaithai MP Paradorn Prissanananthakul might be nominated for the role. “Now things are back to normal, Bhumjaithai will have to [vie for the post] in the event [the MFP is disbanded]. But I’d like to give moral support to Padipat and hope things turn out fine for all.” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Full story: The Thaiger 2024-08-01 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 7. A heated social media argument erupted between a buffet restaurant and a dissatisfied customer, leading to a legal dispute. The incident began when a Facebook user posted a critical review of a conveyor belt hotpot buffet restaurant in the New Students MSU 68 group, citing poor service, especially in terms of the staff’s communication. The restaurant owner responded with a detailed explanation, defending the establishment. The owner stated that the customer had inappropriately taken a communal dish (tteok-bokki) and placed it on their lap, despite being in the company of four other diners. The manager had merely requested that the customer cover the dish to prevent it from drying out, contradicting claims of any aggressive behaviour as alleged in the customer’s post. The owner further disputed the claim that the manager had shouted at the customer to close the door gently. Surveillance footage, reviewed from the time the customer entered until they left, reportedly showed no such incident occurred. The owner expressed frustration at the customer’s suggestion that others should think twice before going, emphasising that the issue stemmed from the customer’s behaviour at the table, which was disrespectful to other diners. In a passionate message, the owner swore on sacred entities that their account was truthful and challenged the customer to present any evidence of misconduct, proposing that the CCTV footage be used in court if necessary. The owner declared their intention to pursue legal action against the individual, identified only as Miss D, without any possibility of settlement. Inappropriate complaint The owner implored the public to consider that even anonymous posts can be traced and that such damaging actions should cease. They emphasised that there are many appropriate channels for complaints and that no business wants to face ruin. The restaurant is open to constructive feedback and willing to make improvements, but the owner felt compelled to defend their business against false accusations. Ultimately, the customer who posted the critical review issued a public apology, admitting that the post was made in anger and that they only wanted the staff to communicate more politely. The customer expressed willingness to apologise formally if needed and stated their intention to remain a regular patron of the restaurant. They also mentioned their financial inability to compensate the restaurant, having only a little over a thousand baht to their name. In response, the restaurant owner reiterated that monetary compensation was required and confirmed that legal action had been initiated against the customer, reported KhaoSod. 13. Royal Thai Police launched an operation titled Crackdown on Illegal Vehicles Flooding the City, leading to the search of four locations and the discovery of over 2,000 fake registrations, including a single registration number used on 26 vehicles. The operation, conducted yesterday, involved the Crime Suppression Division and the Department of Land Transport (DLT). Senior officers including Sopon Saraphat, Montri Teskhan, and Kongkrit Lertsitthikul, along with Sekson Akkharaphan, Deputy Director-General of the DLT, announced the results from the four targeted areas in Samut Sakhon, Ratchaburi, Chaiyaphum, and Sisaket. Four individuals were arrested, and over 30 vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, along with fake licence plates, were seized. Sopon stated that the operation was necessary due to the significant number of illegal vehicles using counterfeit licence plates on the roads. It was discovered that some registration numbers were used on as many as 26 different vehicles. These fake registrations are increasingly being used for other illegal activities such as drug trafficking, smuggling illegal immigrants, and transporting illegal weapons. Coordination with the DLT was essential for the success of this operation. Madam Mali Officer Montri explained that the crackdown is a continuation of an earlier investigation related to a network known as Madam Mali involved in exporting vehicles with fake registrations to neighbouring countries. During a raid in Loei province on September 26 last year, police uncovered over 2,000 items of vehicle data, including registration numbers, tax stickers, vehicle brands, and chassis numbers. These documents were believed to be forgeries intended for sale to customers. The data was classified into three groups: the first group included registration numbers in the DLT’s database but with incorrect vehicle types: the second group had registration numbers matching the vehicles but used on multiple units, referred to as twin cars, and the third group had no records in the system or used unassigned registration numbers. Montri further explained that many of the 2,000 vehicles identified were still under the ownership of finance companies. Some owners, after leasing the vehicles, pawned them, intending to sell them later. In some cases, the pawned vehicles were sold off without the owners’ consent. Some buyers were aware of the vehicles’ illegal status but were attracted by the low price or intended to use them for illegal purposes. Others were unaware they were purchasing illegal vehicles as the counterfeit licence plates and registration documents were convincing. Officer Kongkrit highlighted that in the past year, highway police had seized 67 vehicles with fake registrations. These were primarily used for drug trafficking, smuggling illegal immigrants, and transporting contraband or untaxed goods, among other illegal activities. DLT Deputy Director-General Sekson noted that the department has been working closely with the police to verify vehicle registrations and prevent illegal activities. The investigation revealed that the registration number used on 26 vehicles was indeed a fake and had never been officially issued, reported KhaoSod. 15. The Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTSC) declared itself ready to negotiate with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Krungthep Thanakom (KT) over the staggering debt tied to the BTS Green Line extensions. This comes hot on the heels of a Supreme Administrative Court ruling on July 26, giving both parties a 180-day deadline to cough up nearly 12 billion baht for the operational and maintenance (O&M) costs of the Saphan Taksin-Bang Wa and On Nut-Kheha extensions. BTSC’s chairman, Keeree Kanjanapas, revealed that the total debt had ballooned to 39 billion baht as of July 25, potentially soaring to 40 billion baht with delayed payments. “We won’t sign any contract unless it’s legally sound.” Keeree emphasised the company’s responsibility to shareholders and passengers. He urged the BMA and KT to settle the 11.75 billion baht debt immediately to bolster BTSC’s liquidity and enhance service quality. Keeree also highlighted the pressing issue of a near-28 billion baht remaining debt, accruing a hefty 7 million baht in interest daily. While reaffirming BTSC’s readiness for negotiation, Keeree expressed hope for a swift resolution, ensuring seamless transport services. He noted the BMA’s ongoing review of the current Green Line concession, set to expire in 2029, and clarified that discussions about future extensions have yet to commence. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt acknowledged the debt’s impact on BMA’s finances, potentially pushing spending beyond the 2025 budget of 90 billion baht. However, the 58 year old Bangkok chief assured that the BMA would avoid borrowing, opting instead to adjust spending according to revenue estimates, reported The Nation. 16. Ex-PM Thaksin’s Dubai dreams dashed: Medical treatment declined The Criminal Court dashed former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s hopes of jetting off to Dubai for medical treatment. 17. The Criminal Court dashed former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s hopes of jetting off to Dubai for medical treatment. The embattled ex-leader requested to travel to the UAE from August 1 to 16, citing a slew of health issues, including chronic pneumonia, respiratory and coronary symptoms, a torn right rotator cuff, and spinal disc herniation. Thaksin, who celebrated his 75th birthday last week, claimed he needed to consult with physicians who had treated him during his previous stay in the Middle East. Adding to the intrigue, Thaksin’s request included plans to meet several key figures in the UAE on what were described as personal missions. He assured the court that he would return to Thailand before his next court appearance on August 19, where he faces charges under the royal defamation law and the Computer Crime Act for remarks made during a 2015 interview with South Korean media. However, the court remained unmoved, stating that Thaksin’s conditions could be adequately treated by doctors in Thailand. The judges also noted that his proposed meetings in Dubai had no medical relevance. Thaksin’s request was consequently denied, continuing his legal woes since his return from 15 years of self-imposed exile last August. The former premier, who was ousted in a 2006 military coup, was swiftly sentenced to eight years in prison upon his return, later reduced to one year through royal clemency. After falling ill on his first night in prison, he spent six months in hospital before being paroled in February, reported The Nation. 19. The Tang Rat application crashed as numerous people rushed to download and verify their identities ahead of the registration for the 10,000 baht digital wallet set to begin tomorrow, August 1. It was reported today that the government, through the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) and the Ministry of Finance, will open the registration for the 10,000 baht digital wallet programme tomorrow. Citizens interested in participating could register via the Tang Rat application, which can be downloaded directly from smartphone platforms. However, the latest check at 11.30am revealed that citizens were unable to access the Tang Rat application. The system faced login issues, failed to register new users, and could not verify identities. The error code 504 suggested server problems, likely caused by a high number of users accessing the app simultaneously just before the digital wallet registration starts tomorrow at 8am. Users must enter their name, surname, and ID number to register on the Tang Rat app. However, upon reaching the stage to verify identity, they were unable to do so. The screen displayed a message stating, “Sorry, we cannot verify your identity at this time. Please try again. “The application is experiencing a high volume of traffic, which is causing these issues.” The government urged users to remain patient and retry the process later, as the technical team is working to resolve the problem as quickly as possible. This digital wallet initiative is part of a broader government effort to stimulate the economy by injecting cash directly into citizens’ hands, encouraging spending and economic activity. The 10,000 baht will be provided through a digital wallet that can be used for various transactions, making it easier for people to spend it on goods and services. The Tang Rat application was designed to facilitate the registration and identity verification process, making it seamless for users. However, the unexpected surge in traffic has highlighted potential scalability issues within the system, said a Tang Rat application spokesperson. “We are aware of the inconvenience this has caused to many citizens looking forward to the benefits of the digital wallet programme. The team is working around the clock to ensure that the app is back online and functioning correctly before the registration begins.” Users are advised to keep their application updated and watch for official announcements regarding the status of the Tang Rat app, reported KhaoSod. 21. Thai police have captured a man who was accused of stealing from coin-operated machines in several Bangkok laundries. Despite his efforts to avoid being caught by manipulating surveillance cameras, he was eventually apprehended. High-ranking Thai officers, including Police Lieutenant General Thiti Saengsawang, Police Major General Noppasil Poolwasawat, Pol. Maj. Gen. Teeradech Thammasuthee, and Colonel Niwat Phuenguthaisri and their teams successfully arrested the 29-year-old, named Chaiyanan. He was arrested following a warrant issued by the Phra Khanong Criminal Court on July 30, relating to a charge of theft during night hours involving the use of a vehicle to carry out the crime and escape arrest. The case started on July 14 when a report was made to the Khlong Tan Police Station by a person who reported that someone had tampered with the CCTV cameras at a laundry on Soi Pattanakarn 38. The individual, who rode a motorcycle, arrived around 3:54 am on July 12 and stole 5,000 baht from a coin-exchange machine before running away. The victim reported the incident to the Khlong Tan Police Station. The suspect consistently carried out his thefts at laundromats in Huai Khwang and Ratchada between July 11 and 16, where he manipulated surveillance cameras before stealing. After quickly identifying Chaiyanan as the suspect, police obtained an arrest warrant from the Phra Khanong Criminal Court. They found out that Chaiyanan was hiding in the Phai Singto area today. Officers saw him in a convenience store's parking lot at roughly 5:50 pm and immediately arrested him. He was then taken to the Khlong Tan Police Station for further legal procedures, as reported by KhaoSod. Pol. Maj. Gen. Teeradech Thammasuthee said in a statement, “The suspect's activities had cause considerable worry in the community. Thus, it's important to arrest such persons promptly to avoid further public fear." Despite his clever attempts to hide, the widespread CCTV network in Bangkok played a vital role in finding and arresting him. If such criminal activities are not controlled, it could lead to larger threats to society. 23. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) recently raided a car wash in Bangkok's Khlong Sam Wa district only to discover it was a disguise for a complex network illegally transmitting foreign football games. This location was one of 21 across the country linked to the group. Astoundingly, the gang is believed to be operating over 100 fake accounts with over 1.2 billion baht in transactions. The DSI reported the car wash was more than what it seemed on the surface. There was an intricate arrangement of computers and equipment within the premises which hinted at possible ties to online betting. Besides, the officials found evidence of marijuana farming, implying the network might also be involved in drug trading. The network, suspected to consist of more than 30,000 members, is blamed for financial losses over 2.9 billion baht by illegally broadcasting football matches, including Euro 2024. Authorities have issued arrest orders for five main suspects, which include influential business leaders, politicians, and police authorities. Two individuals, believed to be the network operators, were captured in Songkhla province and moved to DSI headquarters in Bangkok. They are facing accusations of infringing broadcast rights and money laundering. The DSI is determined to further probe into the assumed online gambling linked to the network, and to find out whether the marijuana farming was officially authorized. Seventy five-year-old Luang Pu Sa-ad Kusoljittho was discovered next to a therapeutic device, which is suspected to have caused the unfortunate incident. The report of the troubling event reached Kokha Police Station at around 9:35 am today, July 31. Representatives from Kokha Police Station, forensic doctors from Kokha Hospital, and volunteer rescuers quickly arrived at the site - the Santinikom temple, located in Moo 2, Mai Pattana community, Kokha region, Lampang province. Upon reaching, the police found Luang Pu Sa-ad lifeless in his room. First evaluations suggest that he died less than an hour before they found him. There were no signs of intrusion or criminal activity, and the therapeutic device nearby is believed to have led to the electrocution. The device is now with the police for further examination. Both his followers and students deeply mourn Luang Pu Sa-ad's death. He was famously known for creating the Hell City within the temple and devoted his life to Buddhism and the growth of his local community. On July 15, 1997, at the age of 48, Luang Pu Sa-ad became a monk at the Cham Saai Moon Temple in Pong Yang Khok, Hang Chat district, Lampang, under the guidance of Phra Kru Phiphat Silachan. During his religious life, he committed himself to safeguarding and sharing Buddhist teachings. His dedication can be seen in the many religious buildings and fixtures across the temple. He played a crucial role in building the Phra Maha That Chulamani Buddha Chedi with its nine peaks, and creating an underground Hell City exhibition. This exhibition teaches visitors about karma and the outcomes of their actions, promoting the Buddhist teachings of doing good deeds and avoiding bad ones. Thanks to these unique educational features, the temple gained recognition, drawing in a high number of visitors. Alongside the Hell City, other notable creations of Luang Pu Sa-ad include a large standing Buddha statue showcasing the Abhaya Mudra (the gesture of fearlessness) and the Dharma History Building.
