Scandal Over Fake Prosecutor's Certification in Pathum Thani Photo: The Thaiger A scandal erupted after claims that a prosecutor in Thanyaburi district, Pathum Thani province, falsely recognized a man named Mongkol as a prosecutor. A scandal erupted after claims that a prosecutor in Thanyaburi district, Pathum Thani province, falsely recognized a man named Mongkol as a prosecutor. Despite not having the legal authority, he conferred a rank on Mongkol equivalent to a level five prosecutor. The controversy arose after a letter was shared in a prosecutors' group chat. This letter, signed by the prosecutor's office in Thanyaburi on March 26 last year, endorsed Mongkol (last name withheld). The letter reportedly claimed that Mongkol, an advisor to the Director-General of Prosecution Investigation (Police Lieutenant Uthai, last name withheld), held a position similar to a level five prosecutor. It praised Mongkol for his discipline, ethics and public service, stating that the notice served as crucial proof. Reportedly, Mongkol sought the certificate to gain a badge from the Ministry of Interior, which is usually given to officials of level five or higher. Many criticized this certification as unauthorized. The advisor's role Mongkol claimed is self-appointed and not aligned with any recognized prosecutorial rank. The public took notice when Mongkol was arrested while posing as a prosecutor at a famous school and taking pictures with prominent individuals. He was also accused of bullying police officers and harassing a female prosecutor, the niece of a high-ranking police officer. The case ignited discussions about the misuse of power and the validity of official certificates. Legal experts argue that the certification was illegitimate since it was given without appropriate authority. Level five prosecutors hold substantial power, comparable to provincial or expert prosecutors, and are respected within the legal system. The unauthorised certification of Mongkol threatens the hierarchy and legal procedures within the prosecutorial system. The Ministry of Interior, responsible for issuing badges Mongkol was pursuing, usually reserves these honours for high-ranking officials with outstanding service records. Mongkol's attempt to fraudulently obtain the badge has raised concerns about potential abuses in the future and the need for more stringent verification processes. A car on Rama 2 Road, Bangkok, was hit by a falling steel plate amid a storm leading to a three-day work suspension and compensation for those affected. The incident happened on July 29 around 11.45am. Director-General of the Department of Highways, Sarawut Songsiwilai, disclosed details about the unfortunate happening where a steel plate fell on a pickup truck's bonnet near the Wat Pak Bo overpass on Highway 35, also known as Rama 2 Road. Early investigations suggest that the incident happened outside the set construction hours of 8pm to 5am. The workers had stored steel plates on the project site. However, the stormy weather and strong winds caused one of the plates to fall and damage the vehicle below. Notably, no injuries were reported. The contractor has compensated the impacted parties and has been directed to stop work for three days for a thorough investigation into the incident's details and causes. If it is determined that the contractor ignored safety measures, they could face legal repercussions and a reduction in their score, affecting their chances in future project bids. Thai Olympic Boxing Champion Somluck Pleads Not Guilty to Sexual Assault Charges File photo for reference only Thai former Olympic boxing champion, Somluck Khamsing, confidently walked into Khon Kaen's Provincial Court today to deny sexual assault charges. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1334291-thai-olympic-boxing-champion-somluck-pleads-not-guilty-to-sexual-assault-charges/ -
Thai former Olympic boxing champion, Somluck Khamsing, confidently walked into Khon Kaen's Provincial Court today to deny sexual assault charges. The 51-year-old boxer, along with his close ally Pichet Chinaehantha, appeared for the initial hearing on July 31. The hearing was to review evidence and list of witnesses. Both men have been charged by the prosecutors. Major allegations against Somluck include participating in taking a teenager aged 15 to 18 years old away from their guardians, leading the minor to engage in inappropriate behavior, attempted forceful sexual intercourse, and carrying out indecent acts. These acts breach several sections of the Criminal Code. Pichet is charged with cooperating to remove the teenager from parental care and participating in taking the minor to conduct indecent acts. Reports from Thai media state that Pichet, aged 47, is alleged to have driven the motorcycle carrying the minor and Somluck from the Suksant Khon Kaen bar to the Mantrawalee Hotel. A 17-year-old girl lodged these charges in early December. She claimed to have met Somluck at a bar in Khon Kaen's Mueang district and alleged that he took her to a hotel where he assaulted her. Somluck turned himself in soon after the allegation and apologized publicly to the victim and her family, although he refuted all charges. He was later released on bail. Arriving in court, Somluck remained cool and stated he had complied with all conditions, had evidence proving his innocence, and was optimistic of getting acquitted. "I am the third person to be treated this way, based on the information I have. But I will not go into details. I have faith in the justice process," he said. Somluck is renowned for winning Thailand's first Olympic gold medal in boxing at the Atlanta Games in 1996. He had undergone training in Muay Thai. A woman found the lifeless body of a missing worker, who had been electrocuted and was holding a pair of scissors tightly, in his room. Police are investigating the incident that took place last night. Police Lieutenant Pacharak Suriya from Huai Yai Police Station reported receiving a distress call at 7pm yesterday, July 30, about a death at an unnumbered worker camp near the Ban Phu Thai cassava field, Village No. 5, Khao Mai Kaew Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chon Buri Province. The scene was a zinc-roofed room where the body of Pongsakorn, a 23 year old shuttle driver, was found. He had suffered severe burns on his chest from electrocution, clutching a pair of wire cutters in his hand. Officials confirmed that there were no signs of foul play or physical assault. A 32 year old woman, Sita, discovered the body. She explained that Pongsakorn often preferred solitude, so his absence did not immediately raise alarm. However, growing concern led her to check his room, where she found him leaning against a corner. “I noticed the shuttle driver had been unusually absent. I peeked in and saw him slumped in the corner. I called for help to break in, and we found he had already passed away.” Sita immediately contacted the police to report the incident, reported KhaoSod. Rescue teams from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation in Pattaya and the police investigative unit arrived promptly to examine the scene. They noted the condition of the body and the absence of any struggle, further suggesting accidental electrocution as the cause of death. A tour bus filled with Chinese tourists collided with a truck while en route to Pattaya last night, resulting in multiple injuries. The incident occurred at 4.30pm, July 30, on Route 36 (Katinglai-Rayong) in the Nong Plalai sub-district of Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri province. Responding swiftly to the scene were Bang Lamung Police, reporters, and rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation. The accident scene revealed a severely damaged white tourist bus driven by 44 year old Samak Sanehdee, who received immediate first aid before being transported to Bang Lamung Hospital. The bus was carrying 13 Chinese tourists, including three men, seven women, one boy, and two girls. Although visibly shaken, only two tourists sustained minor injuries and were promptly treated before being taken to their hotel in another bus. A black PCX motorcycle was also found overturned at the scene. The rider, 42 year old Marcus Benjamin, was injured and transported to Bang Lamung Hospital after receiving initial treatment on-site. Police also found a six-wheel truck with minor damage in front of the tourist bus. The truck driver, 53 year old Sekson Hanadong, was unharmed. Initial investigations suggest that the motorcycle rider might have skidded due to sand on the road, causing him to cross into the truck’s path. In an attempt to avoid the motorcycle, the truck driver swerved and collided with a central barrier, which led to the bus crashing into the rear of the truck, reported The Pattaya News. Bang Lamung Police are conducting further investigations to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident and the necessary legal actions. Airports of Thailand (AOT) is bracing for a colossal monthly loss of 143 million baht after announcing the closure of all duty-free shops in the arrivals areas of five major airports. This shocking move, aimed at boosting domestic spending, was approved by the Cabinet on July 2 and will come into effect on August 1. The closure affects duty-free shops at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Hat Yai airports. During a board meeting yesterday, AOT officials acknowledged the financial hit, revealing that the monthly revenue loss includes 1.7 million baht from rent and a staggering 142 million baht in minimum profit compensation. King Power Duty-Free Ltd (KPD), a key player in the duty-free market, has already reached out to AOT to return 2,250 square metres of duty-free retail space across the affected airports. The handover will also begin tomorrow, August 1. Despite the financial blow, AOT is exploring new projects to recover some of the lost income. The closure is part of a broader government strategy to funnel spending into local shops, with hopes of generating up to 350 billion baht annually. The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising the focus on domestic retail while others express concern over the economic fallout for the airport operator and duty-free vendors, reported The Nation. Thailand warns travellers as Oropouche fever spreads in Brazil Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health is closely monitoring the spread of Oropouche fever in Brazil, where two fatalities have already been reported. Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health is closely monitoring the spread of Oropouche fever in Brazil, where two fatalities have already been reported. The disease, transmitted by midges, has not yet been detected in Asia, prompting vigilance and travel advisories for those heading to Central and South America. The Brazilian Ministry of Health reported on July 25 that two women under 30 years old, residing in Bahia state in northeastern Brazil, succumbed to Oropouche fever. This marks the first-ever recorded death from the disease, which presents with symptoms akin to dengue fever, including severe illness. Oropouche fever was first identified in Trinidad and Tobago in 1955. Over the decades, outbreaks have been reported in several Central and South American countries, with the highest number of cases in Brazil, totalling 7,236 as of July 23. Other affected countries include Bolivia, Peru, Cuba, and Colombia. To date, there have been no reports of the disease spreading to other continents, including Asia. Permanent Secretary of the Thai Ministry of Public Health Ophart Karnkawinpong emphasised Thailand’s robust surveillance system for infectious diseases, which operates under the One Health approach. The country has successfully managed foreign diseases in the past, such as mpox (formerly monkeypox) and Covid-19. The Department of Disease Control is now closely monitoring the Oropouche fever situation. Oropouche fever is transmitted by the Culicoides paraensis midge, but neither the midge species nor the virus has been found in Thailand, reported KhaoSod. “We advise those travelling to regions with reported outbreaks in Central and South America to take preventive measures. Wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers, and use mosquito-repellent lotions to protect against midges and mosquitoes. “If you experience high fever, headache, muscle pain, or chills upon return, immediately notify international disease control officers or visit a doctor, and inform them of your travel history for proper diagnosis and treatment.” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2024-07-31 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Activist Parit Chiwarak sentenced to two years for lese majeste Photo courtesy of KhaoSod The criminal court of Thailand sentenced political activist Parit Chiwarak, also known as Penguin, to three years in prison for lese majeste, later reduced to two years without suspension. An arrest warrant has been issued for him to serve the sentence within a 10-year statute of limitations. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1334282-activist-parit-chiwarak-sentenced-to-two-years-for-lese-majeste/ -
The criminal court of Thailand sentenced political activist Parit Chiwarak, also known as Penguin, to three years in prison for lese majeste, later reduced to two years without suspension. An arrest warrant has been issued for him to serve the sentence within a 10-year statute of limitations. The verdict was delivered today, July 31, at 10am at Criminal Court Room 905 on Ratchadaphisek Road in Bangkok. Parit, a prominent leader of the Ratsadon group, faced charges under Section 112 of the Criminal Code and the Computer Crimes Act of 2007. The prosecutor accused Parit of using his Facebook account to post defamatory and threatening messages towards the monarchy between late July and early August 2021. Despite denying the charges and being granted bail, Parit failed to appear in court on the scheduled date of June 25, prompting the court to issue an arrest warrant. He was absent again during today’s hearing, with only his lawyer present. Consequently, the court proceeded to deliver the judgement in his absence. The court examined testimonies and evidence from both sides, finding the prosecution’s witnesses consistent and credible. Parit’s claim that someone else might have accessed his Facebook account was deemed unconvincing, as he did not remove the incriminating posts. The court noted that one of his posts from July 28, which encouraged wearing black, was interpreted as a symbolic act of mourning. Parit’s defence that it was meant to call for institutional reform was not accepted. The court ruled that Parit was guilty of lese majeste under Section 112 of the Criminal Code and the Computer Crimes Act. Considering his partial cooperation, the court reduced the initial three-year sentence to two years without suspension. An arrest warrant has been issued for Parit to serve his sentence within the 10-year statute of limitations. Parit Chiwarak, known for his activism and leadership within the Ratsadon group, has been a prominent figure in Thailand’s pro-democracy movement. His social media activities have repeatedly brought him into conflict with authorities, particularly regarding his criticism of the monarchy. The case has drawn significant attention both domestically and internationally, highlighting the ongoing tensions between Thailand’s monarchy and pro-democracy activists. The use of Section 112, which carries severe penalties for defaming the monarchy, has been a contentious issue, with human rights organisations calling for its reform or abolition, reported KhaoSod. The city of Pattaya has halted the operations of nine beach umbrella vendors following claims of unfair treatment towards tourists during a recent holiday in Thailand. Deputy Mayor of Pattaya, Wuttisak Rermkijakarn, stated that the action was taken after receiving several complaints from tourists about unfair practices by these vendors, especially during Thailand's recent three-day holiday period. Of the nine vendors involved, eight are first-time offenders and have been ordered to stop their operations for two weeks, from July 30 to August 15, 2024. One vendor, found guilty for the second time, has been suspended for two months, from July 30 to October 1, 2024. Wuttisak warned that vendors who violate the city's regulations for the third time will have their licenses permanently revoked. Wuttisak emphasized that beach umbrellas are crucial for providing comfort to tourists. He urged all vendors to comply with the city's rules, which include an annual city fee of 750 baht and treating tourists with respect to promote positive experiences and good word-of-mouth. The city of Pattaya has established guidelines for umbrella operations, requiring vendors to have one day off per month. During the off-peak season, they have to take two days off per month to maintain the beach's natural allure. Wuttisak encouraged anyone facing unfair treatment from beach vendors to report their complaints to Call Center 1337 or through the Pattaya City Mayor's official Facebook page. All complaints will be investigated by the city and if found valid, suitable action will be taken. The specific ways in which the vendors were exploiting tourists have not been disclosed to the public or the media, reported by The Pattaya News. The Ministry of Transport in Thailand has revealed plans to improve the Bangkok Port, situated in the Khlong Toei district of the city. This confirms that the port won't be moved, as was previously speculated. The upgrade plan will concentrate on vertical expansion, in order to make the best use of the land in its current location. The Deputy Transport Minister, Manaporn Charoensri, stated that the decision came after an instruction from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. This led to the involvement of the Office of the Council of State (OCS) and the National Economics and Social Development Council (NESDC). Together with the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT), they will research the possibility of building high-rise residential projects for locals living near the port. The PAT will also look into ways of expanding commercial space to aid the delivery industry while lessening the environmental harm. The proposed improvements include constructing office buildings and mixed-use buildings, and setting up facilities for large cruise ships. This will mainly aim to increase tourism and strengthen the port’s function as a central logistics point along the Chao Phraya River. The ambitious plan to upgrade Bangkok Port, as stated in the PAT's master plan, is expected to exceed an investment of 100 billion baht. This will be spread across five distinct areas that include administrative spaces, a "smart port," a terminal for cruise ships with related commercial spaces, a sports center with a public park, and areas reserved for future development in the sectors of e-commerce and additional logistics activities.
