  1. A horrifying incident took place in Khon Kaen where a motorbike broke a traffic signal and got hit by a taxi. This unfortunate event resulted in one person losing his life and another being severely injured. A CCTV camera recorded the whole event. The accident happened at 10am today, August 5, at the busy Pratu Mueang intersection in Khon Kaen's city. The CCTV video showed a motorbike breaking a traffic signal and moving into the city. A taxi, abiding by the green signal and moving on the Mittraphap Road, bumped into the motorbike causing grave injuries and death. This horrifying scene played out in front of many people at the traffic signal. The bike rider, 40-year-old Paijit, died in this accident, while the 33-year-old Phobek, who was riding behind Paijit, suffered serious injuries. Both the police and the ambulance arrived at the accident scene quickly. The motorbike, a Honda Zoomer-X registered in Bangkok, was heavily damaged and found on the roadside. The taxi, registered in Khon Kaen and painted blue-and-yellow, was also badly damaged from the front. The 53-year-old taxi driver, Yupaporn, was at the scene at that moment. Yupaporn told her version of the incident. She said she was driving as usual on Mittraphap Road, going from Ban Phai district to Udon Thani. When she got the green signal on the intersection, she moved forward. Suddenly, the motorbike, driven by Paijit with Phobek as the passenger, sped across the red light from Si Chan Road. This lead to the tragic collision. What comes next? Police Colonel Yosawat Kaeosuebthannit has taken the taxi and the motorbike into custody for further examination. The hospital Srinagarind will keep Paijit's body in its forensic department until his family collects it for his last rites. The legal proceedings will move forward as planned. A 47-year-old eyewitness named Ekachai, who sells garlands at the intersection, gave his account of the incident. He said, “I didn’t see the moment of the crash, but I heard a loud noise and saw two men injured on the road. The motorbike rider was already dead, and the passenger was severely hurt.” He also added that the traffic signal on Si Chan Road was red when the motorcycle broke it. He made it clear that the signal for the taxi was green and it was not blinking, proving that the motorbike broke the signal. Ekachai pointed out that small accidents usually happen at this intersection, but they are usually not this serious. This incident, however, had a tragic ending because the motorbike rider did not comply with the traffic rules, leading to catastrophic consequences. Both the CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts have given a clear sequence of the events. This emphasizes the importance of following traffic rules to avoid such travesties. The investigation will continue to decide any more required legal actions after the accident. 2. A tragic incident in Bueng Kan province resulted in two deaths when a neighborhood disagreement escalated. A man killed his neighbor then shot himself despite bystanders' attempts to deescalate the situation. The shooting incident, which took place in Ban Klang, Moo 8, Chaiyaphon subdistrict, Mueang Bueng Kan district, was reported to police and emergency units on August 4. At the scene, they found the bodies of Uthai Phrommin, 46, and Wanchai Sai Sanan, 59. Phrommin, discovered in jeans but without a shirt, had been shot in his right eye, the bullet exiting the back of his head. About 15 meters away, the body of Sai Sanan was discovered, wearing a red-collared shirt, with a gunshot wound to his right temple. A .38 caliber revolver was found near his body. Eyewitnesses disclosed that the two men had frequently been in conflict, often resorting to verbal confrontations. Phrommin operated a grocery store in the village, and Sai Sanan lived about 50 meters away. The confrontation that led to their deaths began as another of their frequent arguments, which escalated into a physical fight. Sai Sanan, unable to overpower Phrommin, went home and returned with the revolver. He shot Phrommin in his right eye, instantly killing him. Despite attempts by bystanders to calm Sai Sanan and convince him to surrender his weapon, he shot himself in the right temple shortly afterward, resulting in his death. Forensic officers and the on-duty doctor at Bueng Kan Hospital first collected fingerprint and forensic evidence at the scene. Autopsies will be done at Khon Kaen Hospital's Forensic Institute to ascertain the exact causes of death. Investigators plan to call on the deceased individuals' relatives and eyewitnesses for interviews to understand what prompted Sai Sanan to resort to violence. 5. Thai transwoman arrested for blackmailing teen to produce porn Photo via Detective News Police swooped to arrest a Thai transwoman at her home in Bangkok for blackmailing a 17 year old boy into producing porn. 6. Police swooped to arrest a Thai transwoman at her home in Bangkok for blackmailing a 17 year old boy into producing porn. A Thai mother sought help from Thailand’s Internet Crimes Against Children on July 30 after her teenage son became depressed and unable to go to school after being allegedly blackmailed by a ladyboy, later identified as 24 year old Kantamate Kamonsurasate, whom he met on X (formerly Twitter). According to his mother, her son had an online date with Kantamate. Kantamate then tricked the boy into sending her his explicit pictures and videos. He was asked to send the obscene content to the suspect several times a day. The teenage victim wanted to stop sharing the indecent images and videos but Kantamate threatened to publish his explicit content and sell it on social media. The victim had to comply with Kantamate’s orders out of fear of blackmail. Eventually, the victim could no longer stand Kantamate’s actions and decided to stop sharing his indecent pictures and videos with her, prompting the transwoman to sell the victim’s content online. His classmates found the content and shared it with the victim, who felt embarrassed and stopped going to school. Police immediately issued an arrest warrant based on the evidence and arrested Kantamate at her condominium in Bangkok’s Bangkae district on Saturday, August 3. Police found a large amount of child pornography on Kantamate’s mobile phone and tablet. Over 200 gigabytes of porn files were found in the cloud storage. Kantamate confessed that she had been tricking young boys into sending him their explicit content for several years. Police added that Kantamate was arrested for the same offence in August last year in the central province of Nakhon Pathom. The case is still before the court but it still didn’t stop Kantamate from repeating her crime. Kantamate faces three charges including: Section 6 of the Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act: seeking benefit from prostitution involving persons over 15 years of age but under 18 years of age. The penalty is six to 15 years imprisonment and a fine of 600,000 to 1.5 million baht. Section 14(4) of the Computer Act: importing indecent information into the computer system which the public is likely to access. The penalty will be imprisonment of up to five years and a fine of up to 100,000 baht. Section 287/1 of the Criminal Law: possession and distribution of child pornography. The penalty is imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine of up to 140,000 baht, or both. 7. 8. The Investigation Division of the Metropolitan Police Bureau (IDMB) arrested a homeless Thai man for breaking into an IDMB police inspector’s Bangkok condominium room several times. The IDMB police inspector suspected his condo had been broken into on June 27 when he arrived home and found some items out of place. He checked thoroughly and discovered some of his belongings were missing but many of his valuables remained untouched. The police inspector reviewed the condo’s security camera footage and identified the intruder as 25 year old Manassawin “James” Thongkham, also known as James Bangbon. He filed a complaint at Petchkasem Police Station. The police victim questioned how James entered his room despite the condominium‘s strict security measures. Further investigation revealed that James stalked the cop for approximately ten days and entered his room eight times in total. James bypassed security measures by stalking the officer and discovering a spare key hidden in the lobby’s mailbox. When the police officer was at work, James would retrieve the key and enter the room. After over a month of investigation, Petchkasem Police Station officers arrested James on Saturday, August 3, on a roadside forest bordering Chachoengsao and Samut Prakan provinces. Police reported that James, realising he had been caught, fled the area. Homeless, he slept at bus stops and petrol stations. Officers managed to track down James and arrested him. James confessed to entering the police officer’s room but denied any intention to steal. He revealed he did not finish school and was unemployed, leading his family to chase him away. James admitted to sitting outside the condominium often enough to observe the police victim’s daily activities. He insisted he entered the officer’s room to rest and had no ill intentions. He fled the area upon realising the officer knew about the break-ins and noticing police officers tailing him. Further questioning will be conducted to ascertain his true motives. James had been previously arrested for drug possession and theft at a temple and a shopping mall in Bangkok. In this case, he was charged under Section 334 of the Criminal Law: stealing property of another person, which carries a penalty of up to three years imprisonment and a fine of up to 60,000 baht. 10. A Thai woman was found dead with a gunshot wound to her head near Khao Yai, sparking a police investigation into potential murder. The incident occurred yesterday, August 4, with local authorities receiving a report about the body discovered in a wooded area off Thanarat Road. Police identified the victim as 34 year old Netnapa Kransut, from Mueang district, Nakhon Ratchasima. She was found wearing black sweatpants and a white short-sleeved shirt, with a pair of sandals lying nearby. Her body was discovered lying face-up approximately 70 metres from the road. Initial investigations revealed that Netnapa had been shot in the right temple, with the bullet exiting through the left side of her head. Police estimate that she had been dead for over eight hours before being found. A .38 calibre homemade pistol was discovered beneath a bamboo log, along with a spent shell casing and an unused bullet near her body. A brown Louis Vuitton suitcase with wheels was also found at the scene. A closer examination of the suitcase revealed various personal items, including a copy of Netnapa’s ID card and a document from the Agricultural Land Reform Office, though it was registered in someone else’s name. Her educational background indicated she had completed her secondary education up to the third year at a school in Nakhon Ratchasima. Residents reported seeing a woman matching Netnapa’s description walking near the area earlier in the morning. They also noticed a sedan parked nearby, although it remains unclear whether the car was connected to Netnapa. Police are currently collecting evidence and have sent her body to Maharaj Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital for a detailed autopsy. Cause of death Veerapol Rabeabpho, Superintendent of Pak Chong Police Station, stated that the cause of death is still undetermined and that further evidence and witness testimonies are needed. He emphasised that Netnapa was not a resident, adding complexity to the investigation. CCTV footage reviewed by police shows Netnapa dragging her suitcase away from a resort located about 800 metres from the crime scene. She had been staying at the resort alone since August 1. Police found searches related to purchasing firearms on her mobile phone, leaving open the possibility of either murder or suicide. However, they have not ruled out any other potential motives or circumstances surrounding her death. Netnapa’s brother has contacted the police, expressing confusion over why she was in the area, as she usually resided in Bangkok. Family members are expected to arrive later today to identify the body and provide additional information that may aid in the investigation. 13. Thailand unveils new visa rules, sparks mixed reactions Picture courtesy of ET Travel world official website Thailand’s major overhaul of visas and entry rules has sparked a variety of reactions, ranging from joy and excitement to confusion and some resentment. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1334685-thailand-unveils-new-visa-rules-sparks-mixed-reactions/
  14. Thailand’s major overhaul of visas and entry rules has sparked a variety of reactions, ranging from joy and excitement to confusion and some resentment. To clarify the new rules, the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Consular Affairs at Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Naruchai Ninnad, addressed readers’ questions in the Bangkok Post’s Deeper Dive vodcast. The standout change is the new five-year Destination Thailand visa (DTV), which allows stays of up to 180 days, extendable for up to one year. However, the visa is not for everyone and requires holders to fit into one of three categories. The first category includes digital nomads or freelancers who receive their paycheques from outside Thailand, said Naruchai. “You can have any type of work and you’re working remotely here in Thailand. Most importantly, the employer is not in Thailand. And your income has to come from outside Thailand. Evidence such as a payslip or a letter from the employer abroad is required.” The second category covers individuals moving to Thailand for specific activities like Muay Thai training, cooking classes, medical treatment, and attending seminars and music festivals. Applicants need to provide evidence such as an appointment, a course receipt, or an event ticket, said Naruchai. “It depends on the course. It may be two weeks or one month, it’s up to the applicant. Extensions beyond the initial 189 days require additional documentation.” Category O spousal visa The third category includes those with spouses or children in Thailand, requiring proof of relationship. This visa could serve as an alternative to the category O spousal visa but needs an extension every six months and necessitates leaving the country at least once per year. The DTV does not require health insurance but mandates proof of at least 500,000 baht in assets, which can be held anywhere in the world. Naruchai emphasised that proof of income or assets is not enough to qualify. The applicant must be either a remote worker, undertaking an approved activity, or a spouse/dependent child. Naruchai also clarified that the DTV cannot replace the one-year retirement visa unless the applicant fits another category. Addressing a complaint that the DTV is a cheaper alternative to the Elite visa. “There are different benefits and privileges between the two visas. So you would have to choose what will particularly benefit you the most.” In another significant change, the number of countries eligible for visa-free entry has increased from 57 to 93, including China and India. The entry stamp has been extended from 30 to 60 days, with a further 30-day extension available at an immigration office. Naruchai explained that the immigration office does not have a specified number of entries per year. “You can enter as many times as possible within a calendar year. Entrants must show access to at least 20,000 baht but are not required to present a return or onward ticket unless specifically asked by an immigration officer.” Visa on arrival The number of countries eligible for a visa on arrival has also risen, from 19 to 31, although this option is less attractive due to its cost of 2,000 baht and a validity of only 15 days. Naruchai clarified that the highest benefit will always be given by the immigration officer, citing the example of Chinese citizens who would receive a 60-day visa exemption instead of a visa on arrival. The final new visa, introduced on July 15, is the Non-ED Plus visa for the 40,000 foreign students at Thai colleges and universities pursuing Bachelor’s degrees or higher. This visa allows them to stay for one year after graduation and take jobs in their field. Naruchai mentioned that if you are here previously under the ED visa and you fulfil the requirements of the ED Plus, it will automatically upgrade into the ED Plus, meaning you will not need to have a re-entry permit. Despite these changes, other visas and the contentious 90-day report remain in place. Although calls to extend the retirement visa to five years were not met, the health insurance requirement for this and the spousal visa has been reduced from 3 million baht to 400,000 baht. Addressing concerns about foreign criminals, Naruchai assured that security measures are still in place. “When people applied for a visa, we looked at the blocklist system. Now, we may not have that pre-screening for the 97 countries, but when they arrive in Thailand, they have to undergo security screening using the same database.” Recent cases of foreign criminals in Thailand have highlighted issues with corrupt immigration officials. Nevertheless, stringent regulations and screenings aim to maintain security without overly burdening law-abiding expats. For more details, the full interview and Thailand’s new visas episode of the Bangkok Post vodcast Deeper Dive can be found on Spotify or other podcast platforms, reported Bangkok Post. 16. A taxi was found abandoned in Nonthaburi province after being hijacked by an armed robber who stole both the vehicle and cash from the driver. Police are now collecting fingerprints to track down the suspect, who is believed to have tampered with the car’s GPS. Niwat, the 59 year old owner of a green-and-yellow taxi with the registration number 1มค 8167, was the victim of the incident. The robbery occurred early yesterday, August 1, when a man, approximately 40 years old, used a firearm to threaten Niwat and steal 3,000 baht in cash along with the vehicle. The assailant, armed with a handgun, fired one shot to intimidate Niwat before driving away with the taxi. After the incident, Niwat reported the crime to the Sai Noi Police Station. The robbery took place on Anamai Lim Kun Road in Nong Phrong Yai, Sai Noi district, Nonthaburi province. Following the report, police launched an investigation to locate the stolen vehicle and the suspect. Police received a tip today from a Good Samaritan that Niwat’s taxi was found abandoned in a secluded alley near Wat Tem Rak Samakkhi, located in Bang Khu Rat, Bang Bua Thong district, Nonthaburi province. The alley was nearly 10 kilometres from the scene of the robbery, indicating that the suspect drove a considerable distance before leaving the vehicle. Upon inspecting the vehicle, police found the front console dismantled, suggesting that the suspect attempted to remove the car’s GPS. Additionally, a .45mm bullet casing was discovered on the driver’s seat floor, and Niwat’s wallet was left inside the car, though the money had been taken. Suspect on the run Deputy Commander of Nonthaburi Provincial Police, Somphon Wongsi Sunthorn, and Superintendent of Sai Noi Police Station, Maysanon Na Khwan, were present at the scene where the taxi was found. They instructed forensic officers to expedite the collection of fingerprints to identify the suspect. Simultaneously, the investigation team is actively pursuing leads, with initial assumptions pointing to a local individual familiar with the area, given the strategic location where the vehicle was abandoned. “We are working around the clock to apprehend the suspect. The dismantled GPS and abandoned vehicle indicate a well-thought-out plan to evade tracking.” The robbery has caused significant concern among taxi drivers in the area, prompting calls for increased safety measures. Local taxi associations have urged drivers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious passengers or activities to the police immediately. The case remains under investigation, with updates expected as new information becomes available, reported KhaoSod. 18. A tragic accident occurred when a train collided with a motorcycle at a prohibited crossing, resulting in the death of a 19 year old woman. Despite warning signs, locals frequently use the shortcut between two communities in Udon Thani. Police officers from Mueang Udon Thani Station received a report of a fatal collision involving a train and a motorcycle. The incident happened at a railway crossing between Thung Sawang and Nong Tao Lek communities in the Makkhaeng subdistrict. Upon arrival, police found a locomotive, number 4520, transporting containers from Laem Chabang to Nong Khai. Following the accident, the train reversed into the Udon Thani railway station. At the scene, a blue Honda Giorno motorcycle was found off the side of the tracks. Nearby, the body of a 19 year old woman, dressed in her school’s purple and white sports uniform, was located. The victim suffered a broken neck, with blood visible from her nose and mouth. A resident recounted seeing the young woman riding her motorcycle, attempting to cross the railway as a shortcut between the communities. Just as she was about to clear the tracks, the train struck the rear of her motorcycle, propelling her nearly 10 metres and causing her immediate death. The train dragged the motorcycle to a stop near the victim’s body. “I was shocked when I saw the accident happen right before my eyes. This area has a warning sign from the railway authority stating, ‘Danger. Do not cross this area with any vehicles. The railway authority will not be responsible for any accidents. Additionally, if railway property is damaged, you will be held accountable.’” Despite these warnings, locals from both communities continue to use the crossing regularly, as it serves as a convenient shortcut. Residents shared that numerous accidents, resulting in injuries and fatalities, have occurred at this location, reported KhaoSod. “Even though there are signs prohibiting crossing, people still use this shortcut frequently. It’s a dangerous spot, and we’ve seen many accidents here.” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2024-08-02 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. On the evening of July 13, near the entrance of Soi Phothisarn on Sukhumvit Road, Kosol’s white Toyota van encountered the rogue cover, which flew up and wreaked havoc on the undercarriage, damaging the fuel tank and power pump. Despite promptly reporting the incident to Pattaya City police on July 15, Kosol Kwansuk’s pleas for help have fallen on deaf ears. Over two weeks later, he has yet to receive any response or assistance. Frustrated by the lack of action and shifting of responsibility, Kosol has turned to the media to shed light on his plight. Kosol, who relies on his van for his family’s livelihood, is currently unable to work due to the extensive damage and inability to afford the repairs. “I initially feared I had hit a motorcycle because of the loud noise. Upon inspection, I found the dislodged drain cover had struck my van.” Local vendors and motorcycle taxi drivers corroborated Kosol’s account, revealing that the dislodged drain cover has been a recurring issue, causing multiple accidents. Just before Kosol’s ordeal, a motorcycle accident occurred on July 30 on Thepprasit Road, resulting in injuries and damage to the motorcycle. The city’s delayed response has left Kosol feeling abandoned. He is now urgently appealing to Pattaya City officials, particularly Mayor Poramet Ngampichet, to investigate the situation and expedite the compensation process for his repair costs, reported Pattaya Mail. 22. A Pattaya rental room operator was left high and dry by a cunning Korean tourist. A 49 year old owner of a rental room on Soi Chaloem Phra Kiat 11, Pattaya 3 Road, shared his experience yesterday, August 1, to caution other rental operators. Arinthat provided CCTV footage showing the face of the elusive Korean man who swindled him. Arinthat recounted that the Korean tourist, 48 year old Hin Kyung Mo, rented a room on July 17, paying rent until July 21. After that, he stopped paying, claiming his wallet and passport were lost. He said he was waiting for friends to help him in three days, but when they didn’t show up, he claimed he couldn’t contact them. On July 31, the Korean man said he needed to visit the embassy for help with his passport and documents. Arinthat kindly called a taxi for him. However, the Korean man asked to stop at a convenience store for five minutes and then vanished, leaving the taxi waiting for over 30 minutes. This entire episode was caught on CCTV. “I feel hurt because, on July 21, he said he had no money for food, so I lent him 1,000 baht. During the long holiday, he borrowed another 3,000 baht, saying he would contact the embassy but was unsuccessful. Yesterday, he said he ran out of money and needed to go to the embassy again, so I gave him another 2,000 baht before he disappeared.” The landlord mentioned that he had previously helped other tourists, who always repaid him once they contacted their families. This time, however, was different. When he went to file a report at Pattaya City Police Station, the police refused to accept it, stating it didn’t constitute a legal offence as he had allowed the man to stay voluntarily, reported KhaoSod English. “I want to warn other rental operators to be cautious of scammers. We try to be kind to tourists but end up being treated like this.” By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of KhaoSod English Full story: The Thaiger 2024-08-02 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 24. The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has introduced a meal plan costing just 10 baht per meal in response to social media criticism about the quality of conscripts' food in Bangkok. A viral video had shown disappointingly low-quality breakfasts, leading the conscript who posted it to call for improvements. RTA spokesperson, Colonel Richa Suksuwan, confirmed that increased efforts will be put into improving both the variety of the menu and the way meals are delivered. This response comes after a video showed underwhelming meals of cucumber soup with egg and fried Chinese sausage which seemed to be mainly water. To ensure proper management, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has set up guidelines for deducting conscripts' meal charges from their allowances and salaries. This works out to about 2,100 baht per month or around 70 baht per day, which amounts to 23 baht per meal. Recent social media posts have pointed out the difference in meal costs between conscripts, who pay 70 baht per day, and officers at the RTA headquarters, who pay only 10 baht per meal for the same food. Meals usually consist of a variety of dishes, including soups, curries, stir-fries and a dessert. The menu for today featured Thai papaya salad, spicy pork soup, rice with two pieces of fried chicken, and pandan noodles in coconut milk for dessert. Visitors to the RTA headquarters can also enjoy these meals for a cost of 40 baht each. The cheap meal programme at RTA headquarters started under former RTA Commander General Wimon Wongwanich, who subsidized the meals to lessen the financial strain on military personnel. Despite increasing food costs, the RTA maintains this initiative by allocating necessary funds.
