  1. Police apprehended a suspect with three outstanding warrants after he evaded capture for years by hiding in Malaysia. The suspect was caught upon returning home to visit his family yesterday. Reports indicate that under the direction of Phumipat Phattharasriwongchai, the commander of the Cyber Crime Investigation Division 5, and with orders from Kritthaphob Kaewrot, Deputy Inspector of the Cyber Crime Investigation Group 4, the police executed an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court on December 13, 2022. The warrant was for charges of fraud and computer-related crimes. Police captured 31 year old Soryut, a resident of Village 5, Khuan Thani, Kantang District, Trang Province. He was apprehended on a roadside near a house on Phithak Road, Kantang Subdistrict, Kantang District, Trang Province. Before the arrest, the Cyber Guard team in Trang had gathered intelligence via social media, discovering Soryut’s whereabouts. Upon confirming his location, officers moved in and arrested him while he was walking along the roadside near the house. Investigations revealed that Soryut had previously fled to Malaysia to escape arrest and had been residing there for several years. He returned to Thailand to visit his family in Kantang District, where he was ultimately apprehended. Further checks uncovered that Soryut was also wanted under a warrant from the Nakhon Pathom Provincial Court, issued on May 13, 2024, for charges of fraud and introducing false information into a computer system, which could cause damage to others. Additionally, he was wanted under a Chiang Rai Provincial Court warrant issued on March 3, 2023, for fraud and impersonation. All charges are related to mule accounts, reported KhaoSod. Following his arrest, police detained Soryut and transported him to Kantang Police Station for further investigation. They documented the arrest and recorded it in the daily log as evidence. Soryut was then handed over to investigators from the Cyber Crime Investigation Group 3 for legal proceedings. 3. Heavy drought has struck the famous freshwater Kaeng Kor Lake in Lamphun, causing a significant drop in water levels and leaving houseboats stranded on land. Tourism services have been temporarily halted until conditions improve. Operators of houseboat services at Kaeng Kor Lake, located in Mae Ping National Park, Li District, Lamphun province, announced the suspension of their boating and restaurant services due to the severe drought. They assured that operations would resume promptly once the situation got better. Kaeng Kor Lake, a popular tourist destination, mirrors the predicament of Doi Tao Lake, situated above Bhumibol Dam, which also experiences severe water shortages annually during the dry season. Houseboat operators at both lakes are forced to cease operations temporarily until the rains replenish the reservoirs, allowing the houseboats to float again and tourism to resume. “Due to the current dry conditions, we have to temporarily halt our houseboat tours and restaurant services. We will notify everyone through our page as soon as the situation improves.” The drought’s impact on these lakes is a recurring issue. Each year, during the dry season, water levels drop drastically, leading to the temporary closure of houseboat services. This seasonal pattern disrupts the livelihoods of many who rely on tourism for their income. Kaeng Kor and Doi Tao are both integral to the local tourism industry, attracting numerous visitors for their scenic beauty and recreational activities. However, the persistent drought poses a significant challenge to maintaining these attractions. When the water levels recede, houseboats are unable to operate, and the area loses its appeal to tourists. Impact on tourism The situation at Kaeng Kor is particularly dire this year, with water levels falling more rapidly than in previous years. This has prompted early closures and heightened concerns among local businesses and residents who depend on the lake’s tourism. Efforts to mitigate the drought’s effects are ongoing, but the solutions are often temporary and dependent on natural rainfall. The local government and environmental agencies are exploring long-term strategies to manage water resources more effectively and ensure the sustainability of these crucial tourist destinations. The announcement of service suspension has been met with understanding and support from the public, who are aware of the challenges posed by the drought. Many have expressed their hopes for a quick resolution and are looking forward to the reopening of the houseboat tours and restaurants, reported KhaoSod. 5. A disruptive neighbour in Chiang Mai‘s Chom Thong district has become a source of frustration for the local community due to negative signage, loud noises, and other disturbances. Despite attempts to resolve the issues, the homeowner persists with these troubling antics. Residents of Ban Luang subdistrict, Chom Thong district, Chiang Mai, are troubled by a house that has become infamous for its negative signs and disturbances. The house is situated near a popular tourist area, adding to the community’s concerns. Neighbours have reported several issues, including persistent noise disturbances. Loud sounds from the house’s CCTV system, such as crying children, sirens, and convenience store doorbells, are broadcast from morning until evening, disturbing those within a 50-metre radius. Additionally, the homeowner has planted trees on public pathways, obstructing visibility and creating a hazard for drivers on the road from the slaughterhouse to a nearby intersection. The homeowner agreed to trim the trees but left branches in front of the house, further obstructing the area with sharp, thorny branches to prevent parking. The negative signage around the house has also been a point of contention. The homeowner criticises various subjects openly, which residents feel is inappropriate for a community setting. Another disturbing practice includes setting up rituals and offerings on public roads. During a recent annual event, the homeowner placed beer bottles along the roadside, leading to accidents in poorly lit areas. Anong, a long-time community member, explained that the house has displayed provocative signs for about five to six years. She mentioned that the homeowner sometimes places photos of her deceased son and relatives on the fence, which startles drivers passing by. Anong has urged the homeowner to remove the signs and tidy up the house, noting that the clutter poses a safety and cleanliness risk. Village headman, 45 year old Wacharin Supinta stated that he had spoken with the homeowner, who is generally amicable. The headman and municipal officers’ attempts to address the situation, were met with inconsistent compliance from the disruptive neighbour. Wacharin mentioned that he would attempt to speak with her again to resolve the matter definitively and improve the community’s image, reported KhaoSod. 7. In Pak Tho, Ratchaburi, a new overpass bridge that is too small for effective use is causing traffic jams. The bridge was built between Village 1 and Village 5 as a substitute route after the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) shut the main motorcycle passage. This road was vitally important for daily tasks including trips to the market, school, bank, hospital, and police station. The local residents who use this road every day demonstrated the problem by driving on the bridge. They found out that due to its size, vehicles can't pass each other on the bridge. Motorbikes trying to navigate the sharp bend in the middle of the bridge often had to stop and manually adjust their bikes to make the turn. Both the ascent and descent are affected, resulting in significant delays and difficulties. An unhappy resident stated, "This bridge is badly designed. It is just suitable for pedestrians and making a U-turn in the middle of the bridge is impossible. If one side is going up, the other side has to wait at the bridge top." During peak hours, the bridge is highly congested. Drivers are forced to anxiously wait their turn to cross and hope they will not have to get out and manually manoeuvre their vehicle. This is causing frustration among locals who question the practicality of such a narrow bridge. Residents are calling for changes. One resident, Jai, echoed the thoughts of many locals. He said: "We need the bridge to be widened so vehicles can easily turn and pass each other. A clear distinction for ascending and descending lanes is needed. If the main route is closed and the bridge is left as it is, the community will face major hardship." A local vendor at the bridge also expressed concern, suggesting that if the main road remains closed, locals will face challenges. With thousands of vehicles using the route daily, the narrow bridge could cause accidents. The vendor pointed out that other railway overpasses are not as narrow, which makes this bridge especially troublesome. Residents are now urging the relevant authorities or contractors involved in the construction of the bridge to urgently reassess and modify the design. Their desire is for a fully functioning and safe bridge, as closing the main road without a suitable alternative will definitely disrupt daily life. 8. Thai Government to Close Duty-Free Arrival Stores After Losing 3 Billion Baht File photo for reference only The Thai government is set to close duty-free shops at eight airports across Thailand due to an estimated loss of 3 billion baht in customs revenue. 9. The Thai government is set to close duty-free shops at eight airports across Thailand due to an estimated loss of 3 billion baht in customs revenue. This is part of a strategy to make Thailand a renowned tourist and shopping destination. Ratchada Thanadirek, the deputy spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced the decision during a press conference after a Cabinet meeting. The proposal to close the duty-free stores was initially discussed at a Cabinet meeting in November last year. The Ministry of Finance was tasked with studying the potential impacts of the decision. It found out that the move would likely increase spending by foreign tourists and spread income more evenly. Each foreign tourist is projected to spend an extra 570 baht per person yearly should the duty-free shops close. However, the report suggested that Thai tourists might seek duty-free goods from other countries. Duty-free businesses would also lose out due to the closure, though other tourism-related businesses would benefit, potentially gaining an extra 3,460 baht per year. The wider distribution of money to other businesses would likely increase government tax collection, specifically income tax and VAT. Furthermore, shutting down the duty-free shops could boost the country's GDP by 0.012% annually. Three businesses operate duty-free shops at eight airports, namely Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hat Yai, U-Tapao, Samui, and Krabi. Last year, these shops sold goods worth roughly 3 billion baht. Ratchada said that all three duty-free businesses agreed with the decision and are ready to shut down their operations in line with the government's measures. However, the exact date when this cancellation is to be implemented is yet to be revealed. File photo for reference only -- 2024-07-02 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
  10. Pattaya crackdown: Mayor checks on ‘soi sore’ after eviction deadline Photo courtesy of Pattaya Mail Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet led city officials on a site inspection of Photisan Soi 6 in North Pattaya yesterday, July 1. 11. Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet led city officials on a site inspection of Photisan Soi 6 in North Pattaya yesterday, July 1. This followed the June 30 deadline for residents to vacate their illegally built homes on public land. For over 30 years, unauthorised structures have stood in Photisan Soi 6. Now, Pattaya City is reclaiming this land to restore it for public use, ease traffic congestion, and stimulate economic growth. The operation involves dismantling these illegal homes and rental buildings, while also providing alternative housing solutions for the 20 affected families. Mayor Poramet underscored the city’s dedication to monitoring the progress of these reclamation efforts. So far, 18 of the 20 families have relocated voluntarily, allowing municipal workers to begin clearing and levelling the land for an ambitious road construction project. However, resistance remains from two families on the periphery, who have refused to move. Pattaya City is continuing negotiations with these families and is prepared to take legal action if necessary. The reclaimed area of Photisan Soi 6 is crucial to a larger infrastructure project aimed at alleviating traffic along Pattaya Third Road. The project covers approximately 300 metres from the Photisan intersection to Photisan Soi 6, with an additional 150 metres extending to Photisan Soi 8. Addressing public concerns about fairness in enforcement, Mayor Poramet stressed that the city’s reclamation efforts are impartial and not based on economic status. Similar measures are being enforced in other areas, such as Sukhawadee House in Naklua, where encroachments obstruct public roads. The mayor highlighted that these initiatives are designed to benefit the entire community by improving traffic flow and accessibility for residents and tourists, reported Pattaya Mail. 13. KFC Thailand is celebrating the upcoming National Fried Chicken Day on July 6 with a special promotion that will give you a free crispy fried drumstick if you can crow like a chicken at the staff. July 6 is considered National Fried Chicken Day in the United States. Fried chicken lovers will celebrate the day by cooking and eating fried chicken in a variety of ways. As one of the first fast-food American chains, KFC always launches promotions inviting its customers to celebrate the day. This year, in Thailand, KFC plans to give away 300 fried drumsticks on July 6 at three branches: Future Park Rangsit shopping mall in Pathum Thani, Central Phitsanulok shopping mall in Phitsanulok, and KFC Meet & Eat in Nakhon Pathom province. To get the free chicken, customers must participate in KFC’s challenge. The store urges its customers to crow like a chicken at the ordering counter to get the gift. As you are in Thailand, trying to crow like a Thai chicken would be preferred. For Thai people, the chicken sound is not like “cock-a-doodle-doo” as in the UK and US but it sounds “ekke ek ek.” However, the store emphasised that it is open to any chicken sounds in each customer’s style. According to the announcement on KFC Thailand’s official Facebook page, customers will be entitled to crow and win the free chicken only after they order at least one item (no minimum order limit). Only 100 drumsticks in hot and spicy flavours, valued at 45 baht, will be available at each branch. The activity will be open to participate in between 10am to 4pm, or until the free product is out of stock. Each participant must allow staff members to record videos and pictures while participating. Aside from appreciation for the creative promotion, many KFC lovers expressed their disappointment at the small number of free chicken drumsticks and the limited locations for the promotion. Besides the free drumstick promotion, KFC is also celebrating July as the month of fried chicken, with a 55 baht discount after ordering two drumsticks with a code, KFC55, via the Line Man application from July 1 to July 31. 15. Four people posing as journalists were arrested for extorting money from a contractor. The suspects were found with vests from various government agencies, used to intimidate the public. Police in Udon Thani, led by Deputy Commander of Udon Thani Provincial Police, Chagat Tiamwong, and Superintendent of the Provincial Investigation Division, Panpet Laokernphet, announced the arrest of four suspects claiming to be rogue journalists extorting money from the public. The suspects include 36 year old Kampanat from Bangkok, who was arrested under a Udon Thani Provincial Court warrant dated June 28 for attempted extortion. Another suspect, 57 year old Suriya from Ban Khao subdistrict, Udon Thani, was also arrested under a court warrant for similar charges. The other two suspects are 50 year old Saksayam, and 45 year old Sitthichai, both from Roi Et province. The police seized 100,000 baht in cash used during a sting operation and firearms found in their possession. Chagat revealed that the arrests followed a report from a contractor in Udon Thani who claimed that individuals posing as journalists, under the guise of an anti-corruption network, demanded money in exchange for not filing complaints about their work. The gang, led by Suriya, initially demanded 300,000 baht but settled for 100,000 baht after negotiations. Following the report, the contractor filed a complaint with the Udon Thani Provincial Police Investigation Division, and a plan was devised to catch the suspects. Sting operation Yesterday July 1, the contractor arranged to hand over the money in a parking lot. At 5.20pm, a four-door pickup truck arrived at the scene. One of the suspects stepped out to collect a brown envelope containing 100,000 baht in cash. As he returned to the vehicle, police officers surrounded the truck. The suspects resisted arrest, threw away the money, and attempted to flee. Eventually, the police managed to subdue and arrest all four suspects. A search of the vehicle revealed multiple firearms which were confiscated as evidence. The suspects were taken to the police station for booking and are currently detained at Udon Thani Police Station, denying any wrongdoing. These individuals had created fake journalist IDs and formed their own media groups, appointing themselves as president, vice president, and other roles. They wore uniforms resembling those of legitimate media and government officials, leading the public to believe they were genuine. This deception caused honest citizens to pay up to avoid problems. Such actions damage the reputation of legitimate media and government agencies as the vests worn by the suspects closely resemble those of the Department of Provincial Administration. Despite their arrest, the suspects denied the extortion charges but admitted to possessing firearms, reported KhaoSod. 19. Starting tomorrow, the fare prices for Bangkok's Blue Line MRT subway service, also known as the Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line, will rise by 1 to 2 baht. The highest fare will now be 45 baht, up from the earlier maximum fare of 43 baht. The Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM) confirmed this news and stated that the change will remain in place until July 2, 2026. The decision to raise the fares is an attempt to balance the costs of operation while keeping public transportation affordable. Despite the slight increase, discounts of 50% are still available for children and the elderly. At the same time, students continue to receive a 10% fare discount. The Blue Line MRT is not just another travel option, but a vital link for commutes around Bangkok. The BEM will keep the new prices valid for the next three years. The increase in fares is seen as a minor adjustment that will support the future growth and expansion of the network. The company will also keep a close eye on this fare structure to make sure it suits public needs. Though the increase in price seems minor, it will still affect daily travelers who frequently use the train service, but it's necessary for the network's continuous operation and development. 22. Thai Restaurant Association Appeals to PM for Immediate Economic Boost to Avoid Closures File photo for reference only On July 1st, 2024, Mr. Sorathep Rojpotjanaruch, head of the Thai Restaurant Business Association, appealed to Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. 23. On July 1st, 2024, Mr. Sorathep Rojpotjanaruch, head of the Thai Restaurant Business Association, appealed to Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. His request was for immediate economic help to prevent more restaurants from shutting down. The current economic crisis, lower buying power among the Thai people, increasing raw material prices like vegetables, and high electricity costs have forced several restaurants to close. In 2019, before COVID-19 struck, the Thai restaurant industry earned around 420 billion baht, presenting 7% of the country's GDP. However, Sorathep pointed out that production costs have gone up by roughly 50%, and prices for raw materials have risen by 20-30%. Despite the industry's expectation to grow by 4-5% in 2024, with a promising first quarter, growth has stalled since April, and restaurants continue to close. For instance, a famous buffet restaurant's profits nosedived by more than 143 million baht in the first quarter. Small street vendors and restaurants have struggled due to lack of funds. The association believes urgent action from the Thai government can steer the industry clear from collapse. Their request includes updating old laws such as the 1972 ordinance banning the sale of alcoholic drinks in restaurants between 2 PM and 5 PM, reducing property taxes for restaurants, and launching spending incentives. The incentives proposed are up to 20,000 baht tax breaks for individuals and 100,000 baht for businesses on expenses with valid receipts. For the public, the suggestion is a provision of 2,000 baht per person for three months, using a digital wallet app to be used only on food, ranging from street vendors to small restaurants. The association hopes these actions will offer much-needed support and help the restaurant sector ride through these testing times, Sorathep added. 25. Following a car bomb explosion in Yala on June 30th, the Commander of the Fourth Army Region has highlighted the importance of stricter security measures at checkpoints. He explained that lax checks could enable insurgent activities. The explosion, which occurred at the Bannang Sata Police Station, damaged over 30 police flats, several administrative offices, and more than 10 vehicles, including the one used in the attack. It led to one death and wounded 29 others. Lt. Gen. Santi Sakuntanak, the Army Region Commander, stressed the necessity for increased surveillance, particularly at checkpoints. He urged the public to be understanding about the heightened security measures. Over the past couple of years, insurgents have launched surprise attacks on government officials and officers when they least expect it. The General emphasized the need to maintain consistent security measures at governmental offices and key locations. National Police Chief, Pol. Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, mentioned that the police have an established plan. However, the bombing slipped through because the car used in the attack was stolen and belonged to a local administrative organization. The investigation has made significant progress, but going forward, police officers in the three provinces need to look after their staff and provide upgraded firearms training. Mr. Mustofa, a 27-year-old public works assistant, was arrested under the Martial Law Act. He was the last person to use the car involved in the attack. Mustofa was detained for questioning at the Ingkhayuthboriharn Camp interrogation center. Another public works assistant, a 45-year-old man, was also detained for questioning. Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul explained that the provincial governor is providing initial help to the victims. No detailed report about the attack’s motive has been received yet. The region, which is known for its beauty and peace along with a booming economy and increasing tourism, has been negatively impacted by the incident.
