Police raided a well-known karaoke and traditional massage parlour in Bangkok today, uncovering an illicit prostitution ring involving Thai and Laotian women. The establishment had over ten rooms converted for illegal activities, and the owner confessed to the charges. Officers from the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division (ATPD), today, July 1, led by Saruti Kwangsopa, instructed officers from the Nong Chok Police Station to mobilise a team of officers to conduct a raid on a karaoke bar in the Nong Chok district of Bangkok. The raid followed intelligence that the establishment, purportedly a traditional massage parlour, was secretly operating a prostitution ring. Inside the premises, police found six women, three Thai and three Laotian, who were drinking with customers. The second and third floors had been modified into over ten small rooms, each furnished with mattresses on the floor, ostensibly for massage services but used for prostitution. Additionally, officers discovered condoms and lubricants, further evidencing the illegal activities. Before the raid, undercover agents had already arranged to purchase services, leading to the immediate arrest of the owner of the establishment, 52 year old Rasamee, who confessed to running the illegal prostitution business. Rasamee was charged with operating a business that facilitated prostitution, managing or overseeing such an establishment, and employing foreign nationals without proper work permits. The six women involved were not coerced into prostitution, so they were charged with congregating in a place of prostitution and were handed over to the ATPD for further legal action, reported KhaoSod. Rasamee now faces severe legal consequences for her actions as police are committed to cracking down on such illegal establishments that exploit women and violate the law. After heavy rains caused widespread flooding in Phuket, the region's Governor, Sophon Suwannarat, has spearheaded a significant cleanup in the Kamala area. The rains on June 30 brought traffic to a halt, caused flight delays, and flooded neighborhoods. Several officials, including Phuket's Vice Governor Sattha Thongkham, and Police Major General Sinlert Sukhum, joined the Governor in Kamala. Updates on the flood situation were provided by Kathu District Chief Theeraphong Chuaychu, who mentioned Kamala was severely impacted with homes filled with garbage and mud. Despite this situation, Governor Sophon assured residents that things were improving. Water pumps have been used to speed up the drainage process. Meanwhile, approximately 50 residents have been provided with food, survival equipment, and safety measures at Wat Thepkrasattri School. The governor also mentioned a return to normalcy for these individuals, with them expected to start cleaning their homes. After flight diversions and flooding affected main access roads, Phuket Airport resumed normal operations. Efforts to mitigate damage are ongoing, and those most affected, including residents in Kamala, Kathu, and Thepkasattri, will receive extra assistance. Plans have been made to install water pumps in high-risk areas to lessen future flooding. Reports show that 740 households or 1,468 people were directly impacted by the flash floods. This affected 41 villages and four communities across Kathu and Thalang districts. Though the situation has improved, low-lying areas are still experiencing floodwaters. Further assistance and damage surveys are still being provided by various government organisations and agencies. Local residents have been advised to continue monitoring the situation, lifting their belongings to safer levels to prevent further damage. Governor Sophon and other officials visited the flood victims at Wat Thepkrasattri School, distributing essential supplies like bedding, hygiene kits, clothing, and blankets. Furthermore, Vice Admiral Suchat Thammapitakwet ordered additional help from Royal Thai Navy to assist affected residents. In Patong, Mayor Chalermsak Maneesri managed operations to clear debris from Pak Bang Canal to ease runoff to the sea. He also directed lifeguards to monitor Patong Beach and advise tourists against swimming in areas with strong waves and rip currents. Phuket's well-known Walking Street market has been chosen by the Health Department as the top site for their 'Street Food Good Health from Local to Global' scheme. The goal is to boost the faith of tourists and attract them all year round. Dr. Atthaphon Kaewsamrit, Deputy Director-General of the Health Department, and Dr. Kusak Kukiattikoon, the head of the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO), kicked off this scheme on June 30. They were joined by Suthida Utaphan from the Food and Water Sanitation Bureau, Phuket Town's Deputy Mayor Supachoke Laongphet, as well as representatives from the local tourism authority, the tourism department, and community enterprise groups. Dr Atthaphon spoke about the increasing trend of street food, also known as sidewalk food locally, particularly among international tourists for its ease of access, convenience, and taste. As part of assuring clean and safe Thai street food, the Health Department has given the responsibility to the Food and Water Sanitation Bureau of setting and improving the standards under the SAN & SAN Plus guidelines. According to Dr Atthaphon, the scheme aims to enhance consumers trust in the cleanliness, safety, quality, and service of Thai street food, thus pulling in both local and international tourists. Furthermore, the 'Street Food Good Health from Local to Global' scheme also aims to improve the street food experience in Phuket, providing a standard for other areas to follow. Dr Atthaphon stressed that to make street food meet the SAN & SAN Plus standards, cooperation from all areas is crucial. Suthida reiterated the bureau's commitment to maintaining clean, safe, and standard food stores, boosting consumer trust in the food quality. The primary aim of this initiative is to ensure that Phuket's street food is not only delicious but also meets high standards of cleanliness and safety, thus increasing its attraction to tourists worldwide. Thailand continues to limit diesel prices due to persistent energy issues File photo for reference only The Thai government is keeping energy prices low to ease the financial burden on households and businesses struggling due to pandemic and skyrocketing global crude oil prices, which are partially due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The Thai government is keeping energy prices low to ease the financial burden on households and businesses struggling due to pandemic and skyrocketing global crude oil prices, which are partially due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The retail diesel price is currently fixed at 33 baht per liter thanks to a subsidy from the Oil Fuel Fund. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is following the price control policy on diesel introduced by the previous administration. While a previously introduced diesel excise tax cut has since ended, retail diesel prices are still held in check through the fund. The government is cautious about hiking electricity costs, considering the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand's (EGAT) significant losses from subsidizing electricity prices. Continuous control on energy costs may have negative long-term effects, including discouraging energy efficiency efforts and hindering the necessary investments in eco-friendly fuel technologies. One example is the delay in adopting the higher quality Euro 5 diesel, slated for January 1, 2024. This decision has received criticism, especially from oil refinery operators who invested billions of baht in Euro 5 diesel development. To maintain low energy costs in 2024, the government went against local refineries' request to increase diesel prices by 0.5 baht per liter with the enforcement of the Euro 5 policy. Energy experts are emphasizing the need for a clear roadmap for the Euro 5 policy in Thailand. The concern here is that long-term energy subsidies might discourage the public from adopting efficient energy use, which is crucial to address climate change. According to an economist at Thammasat University, Praipol Koomsup, the delay in adopting higher quality fuels can hamper Thailand's climate change initiatives. In 2021, former Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha committed at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference to making Thailand carbon neutral by 2050 and aiming for zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065. The management of energy consumption is an area that is often overlooked, experts say, especially when energy prices are low. For instance, when measures to reduce energy costs ended, gasoline and gasohol consumption reduced by 0.2% to 31.7 million liters per day in the first quarter this year. Praipol suggests the government offer price subsidies selectively, targeting low-income earners instead of everyone to prevent government funds from depletion. As popularity-driven schemes may seem appealing, the government needs to be careful about the national debt, which could increase due to large expenditures on energy price subsidies. A 63-year-old Thai man named Sakorn tragically took his own life to enable his family to access his funeral fund. The money was intended to pay a fine imposed by the police, which his family viewed as unjust. This incident occurred in the central province of Suphan Buri, Thailand and was widely discussed on Thai social media. Sakorn and his two sons were involved in a dispute that led to a punitive decision by the Songphinong Police Station officers, leading to the resultant tragedy. Sakron’s 14-year-old son had a conflict with his school friend which escalated when the friend's father threatened him. The friend's father then physically assaulted the young boy and created a dangerous situation that caused a road accident. Sakorn and his son went to the police station to report the incident, but they faced the unexpected burden of a 1,000 baht fine. Faced with financial constraints, the family was unable to pay this fine. Sakorn decided to commit suicide in the belief that his funeral fund would be used to resolve the situation. Despite his older son, the 29-year-old Sakesan also known as James, trying to dissuade him, Sakorn hanged himself. His tragic end left his sons with a note asking them to take care of each other. Officer Apichart Parnpare from the Songphinong Police Station stated that the fine was due to a miscommunication. The police only intended to fine the attacker, not the victim. The misunderstanding was that if the victim agreed to the attacker’s fine, the dispute would be considered resolved. While the attacker admitted to the assault during an interview with media, circumstances of the financial hardship faced by Sakorn’s family were also disclosed. The family did not even have enough money to buy a coffin for Sakorn’s funeral. They were however, supported by a local temple and community members. The exact amount in Sakorn's funeral fund was not reported. File photo for reference only -- 2024-07-01 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Thai Tuna Exports Experience Major Increase With Double-Digit Growth File photo for reference only Over the first five months of this year, Thailand saw a 13% growth in its canned tuna exports, reaching a value of $979 million, says Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, the head of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) in Thailand. There was a 19.4% increase in canned tuna exports compared to the previous year, reaching 221,092 tonnes. This rise could partly be due to the use of canned tuna in pet food production. Over the first five months of this year, Thailand saw a 13% growth in its canned tuna exports, reaching a value of $979 million, says Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, the head of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) in Thailand. There was a 19.4% increase in canned tuna exports compared to the previous year, reaching 221,092 tonnes. This rise could partly be due to the use of canned tuna in pet food production. Thailand's pet food exports also grew substantially, reaching $1.07 billion, which is a 37.6% increase compared to last year. This indicates a broader recovery in the tuna industry. In 2023, the main markets for Thailand's canned tuna exports were the United States ($482 million or 23.1% of total exports), Japan ($257 million or 12.3%), Australia ($173 million or 8.27%), Libya ($150 million or 7.2%), and Saudi Arabia ($138 million or 6.61%). Thailand ranked as the top global exporter of canned tuna with exports valued at $2.09 billion. Other major exporters included Ecuador ($1.12 billion), China ($832 million), Spain ($792 million), and the Netherlands ($314 million). The US was the biggest importer of canned tuna, spending $1.18 billion and making up 13.5% of the global market. Together, European countries like Italy, Spain, France, and Germany imported canned tuna worth $2.82 billion, making up 32.2% of the market. Thailand leads the US canned tuna market with a 38.1% share, whereas its share in Europe is 0.59%. The significant increase in Thai canned tuna exports can possibly be credited to factors like cheaper raw tuna costs, increased demand for halal food, and political risks leading to higher product stockpiles. Naiyanapakorn explains that Thailand's strength in canned tuna exports results from its advanced production technology, adherence to international standards, and strategic location in Southeast Asia that facilitates a comprehensive supply chain network. The TPSO advises focusing on quality control and implementing a traceability system to maintain Thailand's leading position in canned tuna exports. Adding value to products and striving for sustainability could also help target new markets, particularly in the Middle East and Europe. The Thai government is aiming to boost the agricultural sector to contribute to global food security. File photo for reference only -- 2024-07-01 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

snoop1130 replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Ramkhamhaeng Station Reopens Following Temporary Shutdown Due to Fire The Ramkhamhaeng Station on the Airport Rail Link reopened for passengers following a temporary closure caused by a nearby shop fire yesterday. The airport train operator verified the restart of regular services at the station. The fire occurred around 4:30 am in a shop close to the station's entrance escalator, requiring the station's brief closure to ensure passenger safety. Thankfully, the fire was quickly controlled. While train services were ongoing, they did not stop at Ramkhamhaeng, and passengers were advised to use Makkasan or Hua Mak stations instead. Traffic radio station Jor Sor 100 informed that the fire broke out around 4:30 am on the lower level of a building roughly four meters from the escalator. Station officials immediately shut down the power. Firefighters put out the fire within 20 minutes. It's a relief that there were no casualties, and the station didn't bear any damage. However, for safety, the impacted escalator will stay shut, as Jor Sor 100 reported. Police are now probing the fire's origin. A couple from Bangkok has been arrested today for alleged drug trafficking. Police discovered a large amount of drugs and items of value from the duo's property. Supakit, 35, and Sasithorn, 28, were apprehended in the Bang Phlat district. Prior to their arrest, the couple's homes and storage spaces in Soi Somdet Phra Pinklao 2, Bangkok, were investigated. The search revealed around 420 grams of the drug ketamine, four phones, two cars, and two motorcycles. Police also found 50,000 baht in cash, gold weighing 5 baht, and a Hermes bracelet. The investigation into their activities began on June 27 when the police targeted a local drug network. Supakit and Sasithorn were found to be key players in providing drugs to teenagers in the Wat Dao Dueng community and other nearby areas. The constant surveillance of their actions gave the police sufficient proof to initiate a search and arrest operation. During the bust, the police observed Supakit parking his motorcycle on a road in Soi Khrua Khon 4. Supakit had 0.6 grams of ketamine in his jacket pocket, which he admitted was his. Consequently, the police obtained a warrant to inspect Supakit’s house located at Soi Trok San Chao, Bang Yi Khan. Here, they found Sasithorn along with about 20 grams of ketamine. Further investigation then led the police to a car parked in a storage site at Soi Somdet Phra Pinklao 2. Inside the vehicle, police found 400 grams more of ketamine. A quick history check revealed that Sasithorn had previously faced charges with the possession and intention to circulate amphetamines, a Schedule 1 drug, in Chon Buri province which was reported by KhaoSod. The couple has been subsequently detained and charged with the illegal distribution of ketamine, which is a Schedule 2 regulated drug. This case underlines the ongoing dedication of the police to disrupt drug networks and put a stop to unauthorized drug trafficking within communities. A teacher in Thailand has been permanently barred from teaching by the Teachers' Council of Thailand. The banning resulted after the woman livestreamed inappropriate content of herself while teaching at a primary school in Lopburi, a central province of the country. The incident gained attention when a Facebook news page, Esor News 3, shared a screenshot of the livestream from the Bigo Live application. The image displayed the teacher inappropriately revealing her underwear while teaching in class. Viewers of the livestream reacted by sending gifts to the teacher, a feature of the Bigo Live app which allows audiences to donate to streamers. These gifts can later be converted into cash. The identity of the teacher remained undisclosed, but it was reported by Matichon that she worked at Ban Bua Chum School in Lopburi province. The teacher had been noticed in and had previously been warned about wearing revealing clothing during classroom livestreams. The director of the school affirmed to Matichon that the inappropriate actions led to the termination of her training on June 28. The Teachers' Council of Thailand, after reviewing the incident, decided to issue a life-long teaching ban against the woman. The secretary of the council, Amonwan Veeradhammo, stated the actions breached Section 44 of the Teachers and Educational Personnel Council Act, which outlines unacceptable behavior and low moral standard. Yesterday, Chan Puangpetch, backed by the ruling Pheu Thai Party, won the presidency of the Pathum Thani Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO). The race was close, with Chan receiving 203,032 votes, barely defeating Police Lieutenant General Kamronwit Toopkrajang, who gathered 201,212 votes. This marked a return to power for Chan, who had previously lost the position to Kamronwit in 2020. Chan's win margin was a slim 1,820 votes. After the victory, Chan gave a thankful speech from his home in Sam Khok district, appreciating the Pathum Thani residents' support and acknowledging the considerable backing from the Pheu Thai Party and Thaksin Shinawatra. During the provincial electoral competition, 62-year old Chan faced off 72-year old Kamronwit, a former Bangkok Police Commissioner. Chan had previously served three terms as the Pathum Thani PAO president but was defeated by Kamronwit, supported by the Pheu Thai in 2020. Political analysts observed that Thaksin and key Pheu Thai members were prevalent in Pathum Thani before the PAO election, endorsing Chan's campaign and the party's goals. Thaksin's political history, rooted in the Thai Rak Thai party, has influenced political preferences in Pathum Thani. In the General Election held on May 14, 2023, the Move Forward Party (MFP) won most house seats in the province, surpassing the Pheu Thai. However, their road to ruling power was blocked, and a coalition government formed by the Pheu Thai and military-related parties. Current polls indicate growing support for the MFP and its leaders for government management and the prime minister role, in contrast to the previous election. The Pheu Thai's popularity and its prime ministerial candidates, however, have seen a considerable drop. Yesterday, on June 30, Pol. Lt. Gen. Kamronwit was spotted casting his vote in Thanyaburi district, Pathum Thani, reflecting the fiercely competitive atmosphere of this closely contested election. A Burmese father was devastated yesterday after he accidentally ran over and killed his one year old daughter outside their home in the central province of Nakhon Pathom. Sam Phran Hospital in Nakhon Pathom province reported the death of one year old Cherry to Sam Phran Police Station yesterday, June 30. According to the hospital, the girl’s father, a 38 year old Burmese man named Aung Thura, took the girl to the hospital but had already succumbed to her injuries. Cherry reportedly bores serious bruises to her face and body. Her Burmese father and mother, Nyein Nyein Wai, cried inconsolably outside the hospital when police arrived. Aung Thura reported to officers that the incident took place at their home in the Sam Phran district. His wife was washing clothes at the back of the house, while he was driving his black Toyota Fortuner SUV out of the garage. He spotted his three year old son playing in front of the house but did not see his daughter. Aung Thura thought his daughter was with his wife, so he reversed the car out of the garage. Unfortunately, he heard neighbours shout at him, asking him to stop the vehicle and saying that he had run over his daughter. Aung Thura immediately stopped the car and went out to see the distressing scene. The girl lay unconscious at the back of his SUV. He composed himself and rushed his daughter to the hospital but could not save her life. Police officers investigated the vehicle and the incident scene, along with questioning the girl’s parents and witnesses. The girl’s body is undergoing an autopsy at Nakhon Pathom Hospital to confirm the cause of death.
