Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit stated on Monday, July 1, that the first part of the ambitious Southern Land Bridge project, costing 1 trillion baht, will begin operations by 2030’s end. The project aims to connect the Gulf of Thailand with the Andaman Sea. Plans for this project are currently being revised based on feedback from potential investors and locals, with the process likely to finish by this year's third quarter. Design plans for the ports involved in the project should be completed by the year's end. They intend to finalise designs for railway tracks and inter-city motorway by 2024. The government aims to choose a contractor by the third quarter of 2025 and sign the contract in early 2026. The construction will happen in three phases, starting from 2026 and finishing in 2030. The next phases will happen from 2031 to 2034 and then from 2035 to 2036. The project introduces the development of a port in the Ranong province, facing the Andaman Sea, and another in Chumphon which faces the Gulf of Thailand. They will also invest an additional 358.52 billion baht into inter-city motorway and railway infrastructure. Suriya noted the project's positive financial outlook, with an expected internal rate of return of 8.62%. The breakeven point is expected 24 years after operations commence. He also stressed the considerable economic impact of the Land Bridge, forecasting it to create 280,000 jobs in the provinces of Chumphon and Ranong and significantly increase the country's GDP. 4. A Thai man, enduring his 21st heartbreak, tried to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge in Udon Thani, a province in Isaan. This was not his first suicide attempt; the man, Natthawut Sanphakarn, had made several previous attempts to take his life. The story of Natthawut first made news locally and internationally in September of last year when he tried to end his life by jumping from a bridge. The police were able to intervene and prevent the suicide. It was during this instance that the officers found out that Natthawut had experienced heartbreak 20 times, which was driving his thoughts of suicide. In the most recent incident on July 1, Natthawut again tried to take his own life by jumping off a bridge at the Runsina Market in Udon Thani. A rescue team from the Udon Sawang Maeta Dhammasathan Foundation arrived and closely monitored him. Rescuers revealed that Natthawut had tried to end his life numerous times before in different ways, including trying to jump from various bridges and once laying on a railway track. Thankfully, police and rescue teams were able to reach him each time and prevent his death. According to the rescuers, Natthawut actually did not jump off the bridge this time, but only stood on the edge, leading them to believe that he sought attention more than anything else. Natthawut, talking to both the officers and the media, admitted that he had suffered various heartbreaks, the latest being from a woman named Boss who had recently left him. He confessed that while many women were attracted to his genuine love for them, none were interested in a serious relationship with him, leaving him unable to find true love. This led him to contemplate suicide as a solution. Suspecting a mental health issue, the officers from Mueang Udon Thani Police Station chose to take Natthawut to Udon Thani Hospital for further medical evaluation and treatment instead of taking him home, as they usually did. They found alcohol in his system but no drugs. In a statement, a spokesperson from the Thai Police expressed little sympathy for his situation, suggesting that his actions unnecessarily drain police resources. They wished him luck in his future romantic pursuits. File photo for reference only -- 2024-07-02 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  6. Employees of a noodle shop in Udon Thani have become local heroes after saving two lives in one day. The incidents, which were captured on security cameras at the Prathong Noodle Shop on Prajak Road, occurred on July 1. The first incident involved a foreign customer who started choking on his food. His Thai wife tried to help him by performing the Heimlich manoeuvre. Despite her efforts, it was the swift actions of the shop's employees that ultimately saved his life. The employees, Piyathida Pimpha and Sorchart Phanomai, detailed the incident. While preparing noodles, Piyathida noticed the customer struggling for breath and looking as though he might pass out. The man's wife tried to help with the Heimlich manoeuvre, but the shop's owner, Ploy, noticed the situation and rushed over. Ploy took over from the distraught wife and continued the life-saving measure until the man could breathe normally. The customer's wife later mentioned that her husband often chokes on food. Later in the day, a second incident occurred when a new employee at the shop had a seizure and fell off a chair. Again, Ploy jumped into action, providing first aid and calling for emergency services. The worker was taken to the hospital, but has not returned to work since the incident. Both Piyathida and Sorchart were taken aback by the incidents as they're not normal occurrences for their workplace. They praised Ploy for her calm and decisive actions during the crises, which likely saved the lives of both the customer and the ailing employee. They noted that these incidents underline the need for vigilance and readiness in case of emergencies, as well as staff training in responding to such events. Yoidoungchai, made the incident public by posting pictures of his injuries and the details of the attack on his Facebook page on Sunday, June 30. The pictures depicted his bloody face and hands. He revealed that the attack occurred while he was working at a bar situated by the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom. He describes the incident in a post, “It happened at a bar near a clock tower, along the Mekong River. The owner, who was drunk, and his friends swept me away and attacked me. They hit me with a gun until my nose was broken. The attack happened because I took a bathroom break after DJing for over two hours. 10. Police have arrested a young engineer for making and selling guns online. They also discovered a large amount of weapons and explosives at his home. The person, known as Prasit, had been running this operation for two years. The police caught him at a well-known delivery company in Banphot Phisai district, Nakhon Sawan province. He has been charged with illegal possession of explosives, unlicensed ammunition, and unauthorised guns. After they arrested Prasit, the police searched his rented house in Tha Ngio suburb. They found a lot of weapons there. The police took many items from his house. They found metal shapes used to make guns, gun barrels, 131 bullets of various types, a drill press, equipment for cutting metal, and a half-pound stick of C4 explosive. They also found a standard M5 detonator and two booster charges. The police are investigating reports of an illegal gun-making operation in Banphot Phisai district. Their investigation shows that Prasit had been using his rented house to make guns. They made a plan to buy guns from him. This led to his arrest and to a search of his house. Prasit told the police during questioning that he has a degree in mechanical engineering. This gave him the skills to make and put together guns. He first repaired guns for local farmers before starting his business. “I began by fixing guns for farmers," he said. "Then I started making small .38 caliber revolvers that could shoot four bullets. I sold them online for 3,000 to 4,000 baht each. I have been doing this for over two years.” He also said that most of his customers sent him their guns to repair, not to buy new ones. Prasit said he bought the C4 explosive from someone in Sa Kaeo province. He was planning to resell it to Karen and Burmese groups to make money. The police don't fully believe him yet and will continue investigating to find out more. The discovery of so many weapons and explosives concerns them about the possible reach and impact of Prasit's operations. 12. Police and paramilitary forces in Chiang Mai intercepted a drug trafficking operation, seizing one million methamphetamine pills and launching a manhunt for the suspects. The operation took place yesterday when officers from multiple agencies coordinated their efforts to target a notorious smuggling route. Officers from the Fang Drug Suppression Unit, in collaboration with the 3201st Paramilitary Ranger Company, the Phamuang Force, and Border Patrol Police 334, responded swiftly to intelligence reports. The operation was conducted in the area of Pong Hai village, on the road between Pong Hai and Huai Pa Sang, in Mae Ai district, Chiang Mai province. The Drug Suppression Unit received information that a smuggling ring intended to deliver a substantial quantity of methamphetamine to a drug syndicate. The drug traffickers had temporarily stored the narcotics by the roadside, concealed under banana leaves, awaiting pickup by their associates. Upon inspection, officers discovered five modified burlap sacks, each containing 200,000 methamphetamine pills, totalling one million pills. As the officers approached, the traffickers managed to flee, evading capture. Despite their escape, the significant drug haul was secured and taken as evidence. The seized methamphetamine was subsequently transferred to the Mae Sao Community Police Station in Mae Ai district, where it was logged as evidence. The narcotics were then handed over to the investigators at the Fang Drug Suppression Unit for further examination and to aid in the ongoing investigation, reported KhaoSod. Methamphetamine, commonly known as Yaba in Thailand, remains a significant issue, with large quantities often smuggled through the northern borders. The collaboration between the various law enforcement agencies ensured swift action, highlighting the seriousness of the battle against the drug trade. 14. A court in the northern province of Chiang Rai denied a bail request for a Thai man who repeatedly raped his niece from when she was eight until she was 15. He also threatened the girl to drop a complaint against him. The victim’s 44 year old mother contacted the Paveena Foundation for Children and Women because she was worried about the safety of her 17 year old daughter as the rapist, the victim’s uncle, Loy, called the girl and allegedly threatened her with violence unless she stopped the legal proceedings. The woman recounted details of the sexual abuse to the foundation. Her daughter previously lived with her aunt and uncle in Chiang Rai after the woman divorced her husband. She then went to work in Chiang Mai and her ex-husband went to work in South Korea. In June, the girl called her mother and asked to stay with her instead of her aunt. The girl initially did not mention the sexual assault, only saying that she could not stand living with her aunt and uncle. The mother decided to quit her job and rented a house in Chiang Rai to live with her daughter. The girl later revealed the sexual assault to her mother two months later. She said she did not dare to speak to her mother previously because Loy threatened her. The two then reported the matter to Bandu Police Station. According to the woman, the girl suffered from mental health issues after the incident and had to take medicine at all times. The girl also had to see the doctor every three months for follow-up treatment. The mother added that Loy called her daughter in May, threatening her to drop the legal proceedings. Worried about her daughter’s safety, the mother turned to the foundation. The Paveena Foundation for Children and Women took the victim to Bandu Police Station for questioning with a child specialist. The police then issued an arrest warrant for Loy and apprehended him yesterday, July 1. Loy’s bail request was denied, and he is now temporarily detained at a court in Chiang Rai. 16. A tourism campaign featuring art toy mascot Labubu aims to draw eight million Chinese visitors and attract art toy enthusiasts globally, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The TAT Governor, Thapanee Kiatphaibool, stated that Labubu’s selection as a promoter for Thai tourism is expected to enhance Thailand’s recognition among international tourists, in addition to the Chinese market. The art toy market has seen significant global growth, supporting this initiative. The TAT yesterday, July 1, hosted a welcome ceremony for Pop Mart’s Labubu mascot, marking its visit to Thailand from July 1 to July 4. During this visit, Labubu will film a travel promotional video at prominent Bangkok landmarks, including Siam Square, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and Lumpini Muay Thai Stadium. In conjunction with the campaign, Chinese online travel agents will offer tour packages to Chinese tourists, aiming to sell at least 20,000 packages to destinations such as Bangkok, Pattaya, and Chon Buri. Vice-President of Pop Mart International Group Karen Chen highlighted Labubu’s popularity in Thailand, noting it as one of the company’s top-selling mascots. “A new Pop Mart featuring a Labubu theme will be launched at Mega Bangna mall on July 5.” By the end of the year, Pop Mart plans to operate six stores and 20 vending machines in Thailand, potentially including one at Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Thapanee mentioned that the prototype for Thailand’s special edition of Labubu will be ready by October, with sales starting shortly thereafter. To address the sluggish outbound travel sentiment in China, the TAT intends to launch additional campaigns, including Nihao Months from September to October. This comes in response to the first half of the year seeing only 3.5 million Chinese arrivals, less than 50% of the government’s target of eight million. The TAT also reached out to the rights holder of Butter Bear, another popular mascot that has garnered more than 3.9 million likes and nearly 300,000 followers on TikTok. The collaboration between the TAT and Labubu marks the mascot’s first international tour outside China. While the Butter Bear mascot, beloved by tourists, continues to gain social media traction, further enhancing Thailand’s appeal as a tourist destination, reported Bangkok Post. 18. The Finance Ministry appears unlikely to extend the jet fuel excise tax reduction, which was initially introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic, stated Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat. Julapun addressed a recent proposal by a group of budget airlines seeking further reductions in the jet fuel excise tax. He remarked that such requests are not of immediate importance. Julapun highlighted that tax measures aimed at supporting specific businesses must be carefully evaluated to determine if the public genuinely benefits from such measures and if alternative options are available. “Airlines are just one of many travel options…While air travel is popular, many travellers also use other modes of transport.” However, he reassured that the ministry has not disregarded the importance of the airline industry, viewing it as a crucial component for boosting tourism. “The government has steadily increased its target for foreign tourists, now aiming for 36.7 million this year, with expectations to surpass this number. “Higher tourism revenue partially benefits the airline industry, and initial reports indicate that airlines, which faced significant losses during the pandemic, have now returned to profitability.” Julapun urged domestic airlines to reduce airfares and boost flight frequencies to underserved regions, regardless of the government’s stance on extending the jet fuel excise tax cut, reported Bangkok Post. “There have been ongoing discussions about domestic airfares, which are significantly higher compared to those of neighbouring countries.” Currently, the jet fuel excise tax rate stands at 4.726 baht per litre. During the pandemic, due to reduced passenger demand in the midst of a lockdown, the government reduced the aviation fuel excise tax to 0.20 baht per litre from April 10, 2020, to April 30, 2023. 20. Police arrested an apartment security guard in the Isaan province of Surin for attempting to rape a 19 year old woman in her room. The suspect denied the allegation despite CCTV footage and his history of sexual assault. The 19 year old victim, Tarn, urged ThaiRath and other news agencies to share her story, fearing she would not receive justice. She revealed that the security guard fled after the incident and the apartment owner would not cooperate with officers from Mueang Surin Police Station. Tarn recounted the incident, which occurred on June 16 at around 4.50am, to ThaiRath. Tarn said she stayed at the apartment with her boyfriend but he was away when the incident happened. The security guard entered Tarn’s room with a spare keycard. He stood beside her bed while she was sleeping and grabbed her hand to touch his body. Tarn later realised that the man was not her boyfriend, so she kicked him and asked who he was because the room was dark. The security guard punched her in the stomach and face and pressed her on the bed, attempting to rape her. She screamed until the manager of the apartment, who lived next door, woke up and called her. The security guard heard her talking to the manager and fled from her room. According to Tarn, she initially did not know that the suspect was the security guard due to the dark room and reported the incident to him. The guard returned to his duty as if nothing had happened and even returned to her room pretending to check on the incident. Suspect defends himself However, Tarn suspected the guard because of his body shape. She then called her boyfriend and asked him to report the matter to the police. Her boyfriend returned to the apartment and asked to check the security cameras in the hallway and around the apartment but initially, the apartment owner would not agree to the request. The owner eventually allowed access to the security cameras when police arrived. The footage clearly showed that the guard, later identified as 38 year old Jaturong Kantawong, was the suspect. Jaturong escaped from the apartment and went into hiding. Following an interview with multiple news agencies, police arrested Jaturong at a company in the central province of Samut Sakhon on 28 June. Jaturong denied the attempted rape, claiming that he went to the victim’s room to help her. He stated that the apartment manager had asked him to check on the woman. Upon knocking and entering, he found the woman naked. Shocked by the sight, he still decided to enter the room to inquire about the issue. Jaturong told police that he came to Samut Sakhon not to hide from arrest but to work at a new company. He added that he was the one who called the police, questioning why he would dare to report the matter if he had committed the crime. ThaiRath reported that Jaturong had previously stolen money from his employer and had a long criminal history of sexual assault cases. 22. A Thai woman allegedly hired three Thai men to rob and attack her ex-lover yesterday after he allegedly swindled her out of 200,000 baht during their relationship. The 29 year old victim sought help from an officer at Trat Bus Terminal in the eastern province of Thailand at around 3am, yesterday, June 30, stating that he had been attacked and robbed by three suspects. The man was wearing only shorts and had bloody wounds on his face. An officer at the bus terminal reported the matter to Mueang Trat Police Station, who sent more cops to the terminal to question the man. He recounted the incident, telling the police that a customer had ordered a second-hand white sedan from him and asked him to deliver it on Sukhumvit Road in the Khao Saming sub-district of Trat. He drove the car to the meeting point alone, arriving at around midnight. At the meeting point, three attackers approached him, covered his head with a black plastic bag, and physically assaulted him. The attackers then forced him into the car and released him at the bus terminal. The gang also stole his sedan and left a packet of crystal meth with him. Police officers told Channel 7 that they had successfully identified one of the attackers as a 28 year old man named Rahul and believed that a Thai woman, the victim’s former lover, was involved in the incident. According to police, the victim previously had a secret relationship with the woman, whose name was not made public. During their relationship, the victim sold the woman an SUV for 200,000 baht. The woman paid for the car but the man did not give her the vehicle.
