Pattaya City police officers responded to the assault report at 4.06am yesterday, June 27, finding 48 year old Peerasak Saeng-arun with a severe stab wound to his torso. Rescuers provided first aid before rushing him to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. The police identified the suspect as Kanthaphong Rungruangsomboon, a 33 year old bartender, who had fled the scene. Nattaphon Singto, a club employee, revealed that Kanthaphong had been working at the club for only three days and had a dispute with an unnamed waiter. The tension between Kanthaphong and the waiter escalated into a physical altercation on the day of the incident. When Peerasak, the club manager, attempted to intervene, Kanthaphong allegedly used a sharp object to stab him. Initial investigations, including a review of CCTV footage from the club, showed Kanthaphong apologising to Peerasak after the stabbing, claiming it was not his intention to cause harm, before fleeing the scene. Police later tracked down Kanthaphong and took him into custody. He was escorted to the Pattaya City police station for further legal proceedings. 4. Yesterday, a public bus veered off the road in Nakhon Ratchasima, hit a lamp post, and capsized due to a slippery highway. As a result, 37 passengers were injured; 19 were men and 18 were women. The accident occurred on Route 304 in the Pak Thong Chai district. The report was received by Chakraphop Chueasai, the Police Lieutenant Colonel of Pak Thong Chai Police Station. Immediately, emergency services, including the Hook 31 rescue units, were dispatched to the location. Ambulances from several points, including Pak Thong Chai, Suranaree University of Technology Hospital, Chokchai Hospital, and Pak Thong Chai Subdistrict Municipality, were sent to help the hurt passengers. Upon arrival, the rescuers found a blue and white public bus that had hit a lamp post, causing it to break, and overturn in the middle of the highway. The bus was en route from Nong Khai to Rayong and had 43 passengers on board. The injured passengers were given first aid on the spot, then transported to different hospitals. Of these, 26 passengers (14 men and 12 women) were taken to Pak Thong Chai Hospital, seven passengers (four men, and three women) were treated at Suranaree University of Technology Hospital, while Chokchai Hospital admitted four passengers, (one man and three women). The remaining six passengers were unharmed and resumed their journey in a different bus. Preliminary investigation indicates that the accident might have been caused by the slippery road conditions due to constant rain. The bus was travelling from Bo Win in Si Racha District, Chon Buri, heading towards Nong Khai province, and the accident happened when it was coming downhill at a high speed, making it lose control and flip over on the slippery road. Pak Thong Chai Police Station officers will carry out more investigations on the accident; they plan to interview the passengers and the bus driver to ascertain the exact cause of the crash. 6. A woman believed to be mentally ill is suspected to be behind a recent fire at a bank in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The police found her at her home, where she threatened to start another fire. The woman's family asserts she is mentally ill and an arrest warrant is being issued. The woman was captured on surveillance footage setting a Nakhon Si Thammarat bank on fire at 10:21 am on June 26. The video shows the woman riding a red motorcycle, with a helmet on, and carrying a blue petrol container. She parked near an ATM and seemed to be using it, then proceeded to pour petrol at the bank’s entrance and set it on fire. Police Colonel Chanyuth Ruangdit, head of the Chawang District Police Station, provided case updates, reporting that their investigation led to the identification of the suspected arsonist as 48-year-old Amornsuk. Upon following her escape route via CCTV footage, police and patrol officers went to her home. At Amornsuk’s locked home, the officers faced threats from inside. Concerned for safety, the officers retreated and later sought local administrative officials’ assist. The suspect’s relatives confirmed that Amornsuk has had a mental disorder for several years, a fact known by the local community. Chanyuth says the arson seems to be a result of Amornsuk’s mental health issues. No evidence indicates that she had a personal issue with the bank or was a customer. However, witnesses reported seeing her buy petrol from a nearby gas station worth 250 baht which she used in the arson attack. Police are collecting evidence to secure an arrest warrant from the Thung Song Provincial Court. They will also confirm the family’s claims about her mental illness through further investigation. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Finance, is expected to help about 1,900 people over the next six months, by covering over 2,767 acres of land. The Deputy Finance Minister of Thailand, Paophum Rojanasakul, revealed this project, named "Thanarak Auea Ratcha" or "Treasury for the People", showing Thailand’s commitment to tackling problems related to housing and farming land. The project's goal is to make use of unused government-owned land, which is managed by several government organizations, to offer affordable lease to residents. This should improve their access to public facilities and services. The project will take place in nine regions: Nakhon Ratchasima, Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Phanom, Kalasin, Pattani, Ratchaburi, and Surat Thani. The plan is to finish allotting these lands in the next six months. According to Paophum, the aim of this initiative is to provide stability and improve the quality of life for the people. By offering affordable and adaptable land leases, the government hopes that more people will have secure housing and farming land, which is seen as a crucial part of a stable life. The rental rates for residential land are set to be 0.25 baht per month for every square wah for plots up to 100 square wah, and 0.50 baht per month for larger plots. For farming land, the cost is 20 baht per year for each rai for plots up to 50 rai, and 30 baht for larger plots. 12. Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang axed 44 of his advisers following bribery allegations. The move came after reports surfaced suggesting that some of his advisers were taking bribes from military units and related agencies. Sutin, who signed the dismissal order on Monday, explained that he was “streamlining his team and optimising the work process.” “Reports of bribery among some defence advisers made me realise that having too many advisers could lead to lapses in administrative oversight.” The decision aims to prevent further damage while the ministry considers potential legal action against the implicated advisers. “Candidates to replace the dismissed advisers are being carefully vetted. After considering feedback from related parties, adjustments will be made to the new advisory team.” This bold move reportedly followed input from senior political, business, and societal figures. Sutin, Thailand’s first civilian defence minister who is not concurrently serving as prime minister, is receiving praise for his transparency and proactive approach. Analysts note that Sutin’s decisive action is a rare example of a minister acknowledging potential corruption within his close circles and taking immediate steps to address it, reported The Nation. 13. 14. Renowned human rights activist and widow of kidnapped lawyer Somchai Neelapaijit, Angkhana Neelapaijit secured a seat in the Senate as a representative of the civil sector and NGOs. However, she has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the election process, alleging widespread fraud and vote manipulation in favour of certain candidates. In an impassioned statement, Angkhana claimed that the senatorial poll was marred by irregularities that enabled influential lobbying efforts to secure votes for preferred candidates. She pointed to the outcome of the election, where only three candidates from her group emerged victorious amid an election littered with alleged manipulations. The Election Commission (EC) announced the unofficial results following the final round of voting on Wednesday. However, the official endorsement of the 200 newly elected senators is still pending. Angkhana was one of the 2,168 candidates from Group 17, which represents the civil sector, NGOs, and similar occupations. She lamented that only she and two other candidates from her group managed to win seats, while several others were relegated to a waiting list. Expressing her disappointment, Angkhana noted that the civil sector candidates faced significant challenges due to a lack of connections and influence. She alleged that certain powerful individuals orchestrated bloc votes for specific candidates, resulting in an unusually high number of votes for them. “We, civil sector candidates, talked among ourselves. We want to come in and work for the people but we were disappointed to see that seats had been reserved for certain candidates, and those from the civil sector won at a very low ratio.” She further highlighted that the margins by which the civil sector candidates won were exceedingly narrow, suggesting that without substantial connections or power, securing a Senate seat was an uphill battle. Angkhana’s journey into human rights activism began after her husband, Somchai Neelapaijit, disappeared under mysterious circumstances on March 12, 2004. At the time, Somchai was representing five Muslim suspects allegedly involved in a raid on an Army camp in Narathiwat. His disappearance remains unresolved. In addition to her advocacy work, Angkhana served as a commissioner for the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand from November 2015 to 2019. Her election to the Senate marks a significant milestone in her continued efforts to champion human rights and civil liberties in Thailand, reported The Nation. 16. To mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Thailand incinerated over 20 tonnes of confiscated narcotics valued at a staggering 6.45 billion baht yesterday, June 26. The vast quantity of drugs, primarily methamphetamine, was seized from 41,800 cases, underscoring the country’s relentless war on drugs. Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin stated that this destruction is part of the ministry’s comprehensive strategy, which includes prevention, suppression, and rehabilitation. The Thai government has made the eradication of drug abuse a national priority, recognising its devastating impact on society. Minister Somsak emphasised the importance of a united front in combating drug-related issues. “Collaboration among all sectors is crucial to dismantle drug networks and foster a drug-free environment.” Somsak also reassured that public health officials will continue to provide effective treatment and rehabilitation services for those struggling with addiction, reported The Nation. This incineration event marks the second large-scale drug destruction in the fiscal year 2024, following an even larger incineration of 340 tonnes in December last year. The burning of these drugs is a powerful statement of Thailand’s commitment to a drug-free society and its ongoing efforts to combat the illicit drug trade. 17. Thai TikTok star denies illegal abortion allegations Photo courtesy of KhaoSod The Thai TikTok star accused of forcing women into illegal abortions denied the allegations. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1330900-thai-tiktok-star-denies-illegal-abortion-allegations/
  18. The Thai TikTok star accused of forcing women into illegal abortions denied the allegations. A woman recently accused Dong, a popular and attractive TikTok personality, of coercing her into an illegal abortion that nearly caused her to take her own life. It was further alleged that Dong had a pattern of encouraging women to terminate their pregnancies, with some victims being driven to the point of suicide. The 24 year old TikTok star, accompanied by a female friend, appeared at Pratunam Chulalongkorn Police Station in Pathum Thani at 10am today to meet with Police Captain Pornjet Prommun, the investigating officer. Dong had previously filed a complaint against the accuser, seeking an investigation to identify the person responsible for the defamatory social media posts. Dong stated that the allegations had severely damaged his reputation and insisted that the claims were untrue. “The statements about me forcing women to have abortions and people dying are completely false. Both of us know what actually happened.” The initial accusations, which surfaced on social media, claimed that Dong had impregnated multiple women and then pressured them into having abortions. The posts painted a grim picture of a man repeatedly evading responsibility and leaving a trail of emotional and physical harm. Dong mentioned that the accuser, an 18 year old Thai woman nicknamed AE, had initially agreed to meet him at Siam but later changed the location to Pratunam Chulalongkorn Police Station after a phone conversation. They were set to discuss the matter further in the presence of law enforcement officials. Dong expressed his reluctance to speak publicly about the issue, stating that his lawyer advised against making any statements at this time. “This situation has caused me immense distress because none of the allegations are true. The claim about forcing women into abortions is a fabrication, and there have been no deaths.” The police are investigating the origins of the defamatory posts and determining the veracity of the allegations. This case has attracted significant public attention, partly due to Dong’s popularity on TikTok and the seriousness of the accusations. Dong remains steadfast in his denial of the allegations, maintaining that he will cooperate fully with the authorities to clear his name, reported KhaoSod. 20. Phetchaburi police took an unusual approach with a drug possession arrest, pausing to help the suspect feed his chickens and budgerigars before proceeding with legal action. The suspect expressed gratitude and promised to abandon drug-related activities. Officers from Thayang Police Station yesterday apprehended 46 year old Songsak at a small hut in Thayang district, Phetchaburi province. He was found in possession of a quantity of methamphetamine and taken in for questioning. During the interrogation, Songsak admitted to living in a nearby residence, less than 1 kilometre from the arrest site. He stated he had no occupation other than raising chickens and budgerigars, also known as common parakeets. Concerned about the welfare of his animals, he mentioned they had not been fed at the time of his arrest. Upon hearing this, Deputy Inspector of Thayang Police Station, Police Lieutenant Cholothorn Chuarun stepped in. He provided 200 baht to the investigation team to buy some sunflower seeds and corn for the animals, expressing concerns that the animals could starve while Songsak was in custody. Police, along with Songsak, bought the feed and headed to the hut. Together, they scattered the food for the chickens and budgerigars. During this helpful act, Songsak shared his feelings, expressing surprise and appreciation for the kindness shown by the Thayang police officers. He noted that such compassionate treatment was unexpected, especially considering his prior experiences with other police forces, where he felt mistreated and disregarded. “It’s amazing to see such kindness from Thayang Police. Despite my arrest, they still cared enough to ensure my animals were fed. It’s unlike anything I’ve experienced before.” Songsak conveyed his heartfelt thanks to the Thayang Police officers, stating that their actions had given him a new perspective. He promised to refrain from any future involvement with drugs and to avoid troubling society. “Even though I made mistakes, they’ve treated me with respect and without any sense of superiority.” Content with the noble act of the compassionate officers, Songsak vowed to steer clear of drug usage in the future. After ensuring the animals were fed, the police escorted Songsak back to the station to proceed with the legal process. Further demonstrating their acts of kindness and compassion, the officers allowed him to join them for a meal before formally charging him, reported KhaoSod. 22. A father mourned the loss of his 35 year old son, who succumbed to an overdose of sedatives amid ongoing stress and health issues. The incident occurred yesterday in their home at 50/3 Soi Thetsaban Phatthana 3, Wat Mai Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chanthaburi. Police Lieutenant Colonel Jakkrit Saengchan and a team from Phra Pokklao Hospital and the Sawang Katanyu Foundation, arrived at the scene to investigate the incident. The body of Weerayut Phenwong, also known as Ball, was discovered in his bedroom. He was found lying on his back, shirtless and in jeans, with foam around his mouth and his body starting to turn blue, indicating he had been dead for approximately eight hours. There were no signs of a struggle or disturbance in the room. Phenobarbital pills, a type of barbiturate used for short-term treatment of insomnia and seizures, were scattered on the floor near the bedroom. His father, 62 year old Somsak Mitrapraya, who has a left leg amputation and uses a prosthetic leg, had already picked up some of the pills and put them back into their container. During the police investigation, Somsak recounted that he had a conversation with his son earlier but became concerned when Weerayut made an ominous remark about dying similar to a recent drowning case in the news. Somsak noticed his son muttering to himself at around 8pm yesterday, June 26 and suggested he take some of his medication to help him sleep. Weerayut took two pills and went back to his room. Tragic discovery Somsak, who had been working on gemstones, went to bed around 10pm. Upon waking the next morning, he found more pills scattered across the floor and noticed that a significant number of pills were missing from the container, despite having recently refilled it. He didn’t pay much attention until he called for his son to buy food and received no response. A friend of Weerayut’s arrived and didn’t get a reply, prompting them to break down the door, where they discovered Weerayut had died. Somsak revealed that his son had previously harmed himself with sharp objects and had attempted suicide by overdose but was saved in time. He attributed his son’s actions to chronic stress and the inability to find work for many years. Despite these past incidents, no one anticipated this tragic outcome. After the initial investigation, rescue personnel transported Weerayut’s body to the hospital for an autopsy to confirm the exact cause of death. His relatives will then be able to conduct funeral rites according to tradition, reported KhaoSod. 24. A surge in demand has led to a year-long waitlist for the unique volcanic durian grown exclusively in southern Thailand, which boasts a GAP certification ensuring its safety and quality. This particular variety is reported to be twice as delicious as the commonly known Monthong durian. At the heart of this phenomenon is Saiyut Jannsawang’s orchard in Na Khao Sia village, Trang province. Saiyut, a retired agricultural officer, turned to durian farming post-retirement and now manages a 15-rai (approximately 6-acre) plantation, the first in southern Thailand to cultivate volcanic soil durian. The orchard, which is the only one in the region, has received a GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) certification from the Department of Agricultural Extension, verifying it as a chemical-free durian farm. The orchard houses 220 durian trees, including varieties like Monthong, Chanee, Kan Yao, Nok Krachib, Long Lap Lae, Kradum, and Puang Manee. However, due to a recent drought, only around 130 trees bore fruit this year, reducing the yield by 30%. Despite this, today marked the first cut of the season, with the initial harvest of Monthong durians weighing between 3 and 6 kilogrammes and selling at 230 baht per kilogramme. Since last year, over 300 customers have pre-ordered these durians, drawn by their creamy texture, rich flavour, thin shells, and small seeds. The orchard sees consistent foot traffic as customers come to purchase the sought-after volcanic durians directly. Previously, the orchard sold fallen durians, offering them pre-peeled for customers to sample before buying. This year marks the second year of direct sales from the farm, ensuring customers can inspect and exchange any damaged fruits. The farm expects to produce around 4,000 to 5,000 kilogrammes of durians, generating over 1 million baht in revenue, although the initial target was 3 million baht. Farmers have been visiting to study the grafting techniques used to strengthen the trees, eliminating the need for support ropes throughout the durian’s lifespan. They also learn about protecting the fruit with red, blue, and white bags to prevent damage from animals like squirrels. During the selling season, Saiyut wears red clothing daily, a personal ritual believed to attract prosperity and customers. High demand Saiyut shared that this year’s well-prepared harvest includes around 5,000 durians from 130 trees. The organic volcanic durian farming method has doubled the yield, with each fruit weighing between 3 and 6 kilogrammes. However, the high demand means there isn’t enough supply, especially with the 300 advance orders from last year. The standout features of Saiyut’s durians include a thin shell, just half a centimetre thick, and a creamy texture that melts in the mouth without any fibrous strands. Customers have praised the durians for their rich, balanced sweetness and creaminess, making them twice as delightful as the regular Monthong variety. The orchard’s highlight is the unique blend of creamy and sweet flavours in the durians, which surpasses the taste of typical Monthong durians by twofold. Customers who have tasted the fruit describe it as exceptionally delicious, further fueling the high demand for these volcanic durians, reported KhaoSod.
