Local residents protest Chiang Mai airport’s 24/7 plans From tomorrow, Chiang Mai International Airport plans to operate around the clock – but not everyone’s happy about it. Residents from the nearby sub-district of Mae Hia are protesting the extended hours, saying many are still waiting to be compensated for damage caused by flights landing and taking off over the last 5 years. More flights heading over their properties at all hours of the day and night won’t help their situation either. Meena Chankaew, President of the Nimman Noradee Neighbourhood, says many homes adjacent to the airport have been affected by arriving and departing flights and residents plan to petition the Administrative Court to stop the 24/7 operations that are slated to begin tomorrow. The decision was announced by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul yesterday. The extended hours are part of PM Srettha Thavisin’s bid to boost the economy and tourism in the kingdom. According to Anutin, bars and nightclubs in certain areas will be allowed to remain open until 4am over the New Year holiday period. The minister adds that the extended opening hours will eventually be rolled out across the country, but will begin in popular tourism destinations, including Phuket, Bangkok and Chiang Mai (we figure Pattaya will also be included in the initial list). Thailand’s Ministry of Interior Announces New Policies for Public Welfare and Stricter Firearm Control BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s Ministry of Interior has unveiled a series of new policy initiatives with a strong focus on public welfare and stricter firearm control regulations. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s Ministry of Interior has unveiled a series of new policy initiatives with a strong focus on public welfare and stricter firearm control regulations. During his visit to the data collection and verification center for firearm bullets and shells, Anutin Charnvirakul, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, laid out fresh policy guidelines for the Department of Provincial Administration. He expressed his support for the department’s special operations team and discussed the issuance of national identification cards and firearm carry permits. Following the policy briefing, Minister Anutin emphasized that the primary aim of these directives is to enhance the quality of life for all citizens. This comprehensive approach encompasses initiatives related to maintaining social order, discreetly overseeing influential figures, and implementing more stringent firearm regulations. These policies align with the Ministry of Interior’s previously announced 10 key points and the overarching government policy. Concerning firearm control measures, the Deputy Prime Minister revealed that ongoing efforts are in place to introduce regulations necessitating the secure storage of firearms, such as within shooting ranges equipped with designated lockers. Those wishing to engage in shooting activities must do so exclusively at these designated ranges. Furthermore, every bullet and shell casing will be meticulously registered to verify the identity of all firearm owners, including government officials. In terms of monitoring influential figures, the Minister of Interior disclosed that the Department of Provincial Administration is actively and discreetly tracking this group. However, this information will not be disclosed to the public. Dedicated units will be responsible for the close surveillance, inspection, and oversight of these individuals, working in collaboration with both the police and military forces. BANGKOK (NNT) - Efficient water management has become a paramount concern for the government as it seeks to ensure the sustainability of agricultural practices and mitigate the risks of both drought and flooding. Recent inspections have been conducted in various provinces to safeguard communities from the potential consequences of water-related challenges. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has taken a personal interest in this initiative, using his Facebook account to underline the significance of effective water management. Following a recent on-site visit to Udon Thani province, he stressed the government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining a "no flood - no drought" scenario. Prime Minister Srettha also drew attention to a pressing issue: only one-third of the annual rainfall is being adequately stored, while the remaining water flows away untapped. Urgent action is needed to address this situation, and he expressed his optimism that, with the right knowledge and market access, Thai farmers’ income could experience substantial growth over the next four years. An example of effective water management can be found in the Huai Pak Baeng Reservoir Project, which is now considered a model for other regions to emulate. The Prime Minister emphasized that the government is prepared to provide support to such projects, particularly in cases where budgetary constraints or other challenges may arise, emphasizing the importance of expediting water storage initiatives. The Office of The National Water Resources has also recognized the need for strategic planning to combat droughts and floods. Vigilant monitoring efforts have been underway throughout the 2023 rainy season in collaboration with relevant agencies, with a primary objective of minimizing the impact on the public. The Office has unveiled comprehensive plans for advanced water management over the next two years. These plans include measures to address the potential impact of El Nino conditions, with the ultimate aim of ensuring a consistent and reliable water supply for the nation through 2025. The Cabinet agreed on Tuesday to exempt tourists from India and Taiwan from requiring an entry visa to say in Thailand for up to 30 days, effective from November 10 until May 10. Currently, arrivals from 59 countries can enter Thailand without an entry visa. Recently, the cabinet agreed to grant visa exemptions for tourists from China and Kazakhstan, for a temporary period, to boost tourism during the final quarter of the year, after Chinese arrivals dropped below target, mostly due to concerns for safety, fanned by Chinese social media, and an economic slowdown in China. About 25% of India’s 1.4 billion population are considered middle class. About 1.26 million Indians visited Thailand during the first nine months of this year and the numbers are expected to climb to about 1.55 million by the end of the year. Indian tourists spend an average of 41,000 baht per head during their 7-8 days in Thailand.
