BANGKOK (NNT) - The Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) is working to address ongoing issues of corruption within the public sector. Despite being established over 15 years ago, the organization faces numerous challenges, including inadequate manpower and infrastructural inefficiencies. Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin recently conducted an inspection of PACC’s operations and was briefed on its challenges. The agency currently employs 579 personnel nationwide and has requested an additional 200 staff members to improve its efficacy. The Deputy Prime Minister has pledged to consider the request for additional manpower. The PACC is actively communicating with more than 30 business chambers to jointly combat corruption, especially in cases where officials have solicited bribes from entrepreneurs, hindering business activities. The organization has also established a complaint center specifically for foreign business owners, who are often targeted for illicit benefits when seeking various permits for doing business in Thailand. According to Somsak, anti-corruption efforts remain a top priority for the government. He stressed the need for expediency and effective planning to ensure progress and societal impact. He also expressed support for any necessary legal amendments, noting that laws must evolve to serve the public interest. In summary, while the PACC faces challenges like staffing and resource allocation, it continues to strive towards its goal of minimizing corruption in the public sector. Deputy Prime Minister Somsak has pledged support for necessary changes, including legal amendments to better serve public interest. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) reveals a scheme to drive forward the Thai MICE industry, by creating long-term strength through the concept of cultural capital. The aim is to generate 140 billion baht in revenue by the end of next year. The president of TCEB, Chiruit Isarangkun Na Ayuthaya, said that the MICE industry around the world is facing various significant challenges, starting from decreasing business trips, shorter travel time, and shifting demands, such as MICE innovations, new convention venues, new experiences, new business goals and most importantly, sustainability. Therefore, TCEB has set the goal of transforming Thailand into a High Value-Added Destination, by developing new strategies, adapting Thai identities through innovation and creativity, and integrating with related sectors. ‘Soft Power’ is once again set to become a core to creating unique and valuable experiences. He stressed that these strategies will boost the image of the Thai MICE industry, as well as drive the role of Thailand as the Springboard of ASIA’s Growth which will stimulate the MICE industry across Asia. TCEB will be supporting the MICE industry through 3 main key departments: Mega Events and Festivals; International Exhibition; and Domestic MICE Market. They also aim to initiate the ‘Quick-Win’ approach in 2024, which includes a roadshow, pro-active overseas marketing, building a network through one-on-one meetings, and building a discussion platform for all stakeholders. The adjustments to the digital wallet scheme, as proposed by an ad hoc sub-committee, are an indication that the government is encountering problems in securing the estimated Bt560 billion needed to fund it, Move Forward deputy leader Sirikanya Tansakul said today (Thursday). Even if the scheme is downsized to reach only those who are in need of the benefit, using means testing, the government will still need about Bt430 billion to fund the scheme for 43-49 million beneficiaries, instead of about 55 million as originally planned. Again, even if the funding needed is cut to 430 billion baht, she said that there won’t be enough money in the national budget for the 2024 fiscal year, which means that the cost will have to be spread across four fiscal years, at about 100 billion baht a year. Thai social media users have called upon the police to take action against a serial foreign motorcyclist offender, observed engaging in reckless driving along Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Road. Referred to by locals as “Tua Tueng Sukhumvit,” which translates to “the top of Sukhumvit,” the foreign rider has drawn attention across the region. Numerous Thai TikTokers have shared video footage of the foreign motorcyclist on their profiles, with some asserting that spotting him on Sukhumvit Road is a telltale sign. His distinctive riding style has certainly made an impression on other motorists. The shared online videos consistently depict the foreign rider maintaining high speeds, even amidst heavy traffic on Sukhumvit Road. His behaviour frequently involves riding without a helmet, manoeuvring through narrow gaps between cars, cutting off other vehicles, disregarding traffic signals, and performing wheelies on public roads. Remarkably, all of his motorcycles lack number plates. “I thought Sukhumvit Road was a race track when I saw him” “I think he had a mental problem. I saw him waving at public buses and other vehicles on the road like a celebrity. He drove so fast and always squeezed the food delivery drivers.” “I see him a lot. Riding so fast. Makes a lot of noise. Maybe he thinks he is cool.” “The police have arrested him many times, but he keeps on doing the same thing.” By Petch Petpailin Caption: Photo via Facebook/ พูดคุยทั่วไปLaLaDriver&LINEMAN and Once 31 Full story: The Thaiger 2023-10-25 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Endangered Blue-tailed Cave Racer snakes have been spotted mating in a cave in Krabi province, stirring excitement among cave explorers and prompting calls for conservation. Manasathit, also known as Guide Nong, a 40 year old member of the Krabi Cave Lovers Club, led a group of national and international fossil experts on a cave expedition in the Ao Luek district. There, they discovered two Blue-tailed Cave Racer snakes in the act of mating inside a cave hole. These snakes are considered a rare protected species listed in the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Having the chance to witness them is a rare and fortunate event, as these creatures are difficult to find and only inhabit large caves. The sighting sparked great excitement among the explorers. Blue-tailed Cave Racer snakes are legendary among southern locals who believe they guard treasures. This is because these snakes live in deep caves and feed exclusively on large bats. If a cave doesn’t house bats, it’s unlikely to find this snake species residing there, reported Sanook. In a surprise discovery, a Buddha statue believed to be over 100 years old was unearthed from a mango tree at a renowned temple in Chon Buri. This finding came about during the temple’s preparation for the Kathina ceremony scheduled for November 5 when the temple monks were asked by the abbot to cut down the mango tree. In the process of cutting down the approximately 80 centimetres wide and 10 metre tall mango tree, the tree fell, and as it was being sawed into pieces, the workmen discovered a green Buddha statue nestled within the trunk. The smiling statue was promptly removed and is now being venerated at the temple. This morning, October 25, reporters visited the temple, Wat Nong Sang Prachabamrung, located in Phanat Nikhom district, Chon Buri. Inside the temple, a variety of trees were seen, and the site where the mango tree once stood was pointed out. The tree stump and the traces of the cut were all that remained. Upon enquiry, a monk from the temple, Kitisak Thalo, recounted the events of yesterday. The temple’s abbot had hired a tree surgeon from outside to cut the tree as he needed the wood. Three Burmese men sought help from the non-profit organisation Saimai Survive after accusing Thai officers at Borwin Police Station in Chon Buri of filing false charges in a bid to arrest and physically assault them to extort 100,000 baht. After receiving the complaint from the Burmese men, Saimai Survive, posted the story on Facebook yesterday, October 24, along with a picture of a scar from the alleged physical assault on the back of one of the Burmese men. The organisation said that on October 22, Borwin Police Station patrol officers arrested three Burmese men and accused them of entering Thailand illegally. The Burmese men insisted that they were in the country legally and could prove their status but the police ignored them. According to the Burmese nationals, officers took them to the police station and forced them to admit the charge as they physically assaulted them. The officers then demanded 100,000 baht and promised they would close the case. They had no choice and agreed to pay the money for their safety. The Burmese men told the organisation that one of the police officers arrogantly boasted after extorting the money.
