A senior Pheu Thai MP has voiced support for a bill, proposed by the Move Forward party, calling for the dissolution of Thailand’s Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC). Adisorn Piengkes, government whip chief, posted on his X account, @adisornpk, today (Monday) that ISOC is a state within state and, because of it, the army can intervene and has a superior role over other government officials. “ISOC should be dissolved,” he wrote. A sightseeing trip in Thailand’s Surin Islands took an unexpected turn when tourists spotted a rare Omura’s whale, a species only identified in the wild eight years ago. The sighting was confirmed by the national park officers at Mu Ko Surin National Park through an online post on Thursday, October 26. The online post featured a video of the whale making an appearance above the water, to the delight of the Thai boat crew who cheered in excitement. The officers revealed that it was the first time an Omura’s whale had been seen in the national park’s waters. The Omura’s whale is strikingly similar to the Bryde’s whale and is a protected species in Thailand. These whales can grow up to 20 metres in length and weigh up to 20 tonnes. They are usually sighted alone or in pairs, grouping only for feeding purposes. The whales have been observed lunge-feeding on krill and small fish. Habitually found in tropical to warm regions, Omura’s whales are predominantly spotted in the eastern part of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean. However, sightings have also been confirmed in Thai waters, extending from Prachuap Khiri Khan to Songkhla in the Gulf of Thailand. They have even been seen along the Andaman coast, with a group of four previously photographed near the Racha islands, south of Phuket. A renowned coffee shop in Khon Kaen called on the government to regulate sugar prices. Having been in business for over two decades, the shop is now grappling with the highest sugar prices it has ever encountered. This has led to serious concerns about the survival of the establishment. Yesterday at 1pm, a reporter visited several beverage vendors in the area, including tea, coffee, and sweet drink sellers, following the price increase of sugar by 4 baht per kilogramme. The hike in sugar prices has impacted many vendors, particularly the famous Gra Ta coffee shop located next to the Government Savings Bank in the Salalang province of Khon Kaen. Having run the business for over 20 years, the owner of Gra Ta, 55 year old Suneevorn Pojan has never witnessed such a surge in sugar prices. The 4 baht increase per kilogramme has severely impacted her business, as the prices of other essential ingredients like condensed milk, fresh milk, coffee, and even straws have simultaneously escalated. The continuous price hike makes it difficult for her to sustain her business. Over the years, the cost of raw materials has only risen without any decrease, causing a steady increase in overall costs, explained Suneevorn. “The highest sugar price this year has been 25 baht, which has now reached 28 baht. This is the highest price since I started my business.” By Nattapong Westwood Caption: Photo: KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2023-10-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Vietnam scam alert: Thai men survive scam and physical assault Photo via TikTok/ @golf_sanit A Thai TikToker issued a warning to other tourists after he and his friend survived a scam and physical assault by fraudsters in Vietnam. A Thai TikToker issued a warning to other tourists after he and his friend survived a scam and physical assault by fraudsters in Vietnam. The Thai man shared his experience in Vietnam in a video posted to his TikTok account @golf_sanit on Friday 27 October. He said in the caption. “I fell victim to a scam in Vietnam. The scammers also tried to physically attack me. #vietnam #scamwarning.” In the video, Golf explained that he and his friend rented electric skateboards at Ho Chi Minh Square in Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam. Golf shared a picture of a Vietnamese man in a light blue shirt and told his followers that this man was involved in the fraudulent scheme. Golf then went on to describe how he and his friend initially intended to rent electric skateboards for a ride around the square. They were initially informed that each skateboard would cost 600,000 Vietnamese dong (equivalent to 880 baht). Consequently, they handed over 1 million dong (1,470 baht) to the two male vendors. They provided the vendors with two 500,000 dong banknotes and awaited 400,000 dong in change. However, the vendors only returned 40,000 dongs. The vendors claimed that they had communicated that the skateboards were priced at 60,000 dongs each and insisted that Golf and his friend had given them 100,000 dongs, not 1 million dongs. However, several victims did come forward to file a complaint against the fraudster. He is a Thai man named Thanathorn, also known as Sia Meen Vogue. The victims accused him of swindling their money and stealing their assets. According to the victims, Thanathorn’s profile on various social media platforms portrays him as a handsome and wealthy man. On social media, Thanathorn shared pictures of himself standing next to luxury cars, donning designer-branded clothes and wearing expensive accessories. He also posted money transfer receipts for large sums of money and pretended to be friends with the real rich and famous. Inhalant addiction: Chulalongkorn University lecturer warns of serious health risks Photo: Freepik Frequent use of inhalants, especially to the point of addiction, can pose serious health risks, warns a popular Facebook page, Oh, It’s Like This, by Dr Jatuporn Denpruang, a lecturer in the Department of Biology at Chulalongkorn University. Frequent use of inhalants, especially to the point of addiction, can pose serious health risks, warns a popular Facebook page, Oh, It’s Like This, by Dr Jatuporn Denpruang, a lecturer in the Department of Biology at Chulalongkorn University. She responded to a query from a page fan asking whether frequent inhaling of these products is harmful or has long-term effects on the body. Dr Jatuporn states that infrequent use of inhalants should pose little to no health risks. However, using these products frequently, excessively, or to the point of dependency could lead to adverse effects on health, particularly the respiratory system. The ingredients in these inhalants can cause irritation to the nervous system, leading to symptoms such as inflammation of the nasal passages and even pneumonia. Inhalants commonly contain menthol, camphor, peppermint, and essential oils extracted from various herbs such as spearmint, wintergreen, or eucalyptus. Camphor and peppermint, when inhaled, can provide a refreshing and cooling sensation in the nasal passages. These inhalants are typically used to alleviate symptoms of colds, and congested noses, and to relieve headaches. However, if used excessively by someone without these symptoms, it can lead to irritation in the respiratory system, resulting in conditions such as inflammation of the nasal passages and even pneumonia. Furthermore, the ingredients in these inhalants can irritate the nervous system as they have the potential to stimulate nerves, leading to a mild form of addiction. Overuse of these inhalants can also result in tarnishing one’s personal image. Sharing inhalants with others poses a risk of infection in the nasal area, especially with inhalants packaged in tubes. Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has confirmed the facility has been given the green light to operate around the clock, in a bid to boost tourism and the local economy. It’s understood that the extended hours are an order from PM Srettha Thavisin and are being put in place to accommodate demand. Tourism operators are expecting an increase in visitor numbers, due to both the year-end peak season and the temporary visa-free entry granted to Chinese and Kazakh tourists. According to the revised hours policy from Airports of Thailand, the airport will change from operating between 6am and midnight to operating 24 hours a day. A foreign tourist was physically assaulted by a group of dissolute teenagers for unknown reasons in Pattaya. The male foreigner, who asked to keep his identity confidential, was assaulted while walking on Soi Yensabai in South Pattaya with his friend. The incident took place at night on an unspecified recent evening in the Nongprue sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province. According to a CCTV recording, the victim was walking in the alley with his friend when a group of teenagers on two motorbikes drove by and struck the victim with a long stick before calmly leaving the scene. It appeared that the attackers assaulted the victim for no reason, as the man was simply walking by them based on a recording. A Thai business owner in the area named Ms. Joy, 36, whose real name was withheld for her safety, reported that she assisted the victim, who had suffered bruises on his arm and the side of his stomach. The victim did not report the incident to Pattaya police because he said he did not want any problems in Thailand and was afraid of possible repercussions.
