In comparison, the 2022 to 2023 crop year yielded 6.4 million tonnes of sugar cane. Despite the reduction in sugar cane production, KSL remains optimistic about the industry’s future. Chalush Chinthammit, KSL’s president, highlighted that “sugar prices in the global market remain high at around 22 cents a pound, which will be good for the sugar industry.” The company predicts that Thai sugar cane production in the 2023 to 2024 crop year will total 80 million tonnes, falling short of the previous target of 100 to 105 million tonnes. KSL expects its revenue to increase by 20% this year, up from 16.6 billion baht in the previous year, driven by the sales of a new low-glycaemic index (GI) sugar product under Kane’s brand. Developed in partnership with Singapore-based Nutrition Innovation Co, the low-GI sugar is suitable for customers seeking to control their blood sugar levels. GI is a rating system that measures how quickly food containing carbohydrates and sugar affects blood sugar levels when consumed. The suspect, 47 year old Supachoke, was arrested in front of his Thonburi accommodation after a considerable number of victims filed complaints. Yesterday, in response to several complaints, officers from the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) arrested Supachoke on charges of collaboration in fraud, inducing false information into a computer system, and causing damage to the tourism industry. The arrest took place in front of Bupa Phra Ram in Thonburi, Bangkok. The complaints were lodged by multiple victims who had deposited money with the travel agency owned by Supachoke for the purchase of European tour packages. After making the payments, they found themselves unable to embark on the planned tours, resulting in a total loss of more than 4 million baht, reported Khaosod. Upon receiving the complaints, CPPD officials gathered evidence and obtained an arrest warrant. It was subsequently discovered that Supachoke was on his way to give testimony in a similar case filed at Bupa Phra Ram police station. Officers then proceeded to arrest him at the location. Raimon Land plans to launch the projects in the fourth quarter. Korn Narongdej, the chief executive, made known that the luxury market proved to be resilient during the economic downturn caused by the pandemic. This led the company to shift its focus exclusively towards the luxury segment. Rosewood Hotels & Resorts will brand the development, with unit prices starting at 600 million baht. Two other luxury segment projects will be launched in the Sukhumvit area, comprising a branded residence condo project and a low-rise housing project. The Criminal Investigation Division officers, working closely with PCT Unit 5, arrested Nirisara in Bangkok’s Khlong Tan area after an intense investigation. The scam began when the 16 year old victim saw an offer for an iPad at only 990 baht (US$29) online, and was duped into transferring 6,495 baht (US$187) to the scammer in hopes of receiving the device and ultimately recovering the money spent. She was devastated and sought help online, which garnered the attention of many sympathetic viewers and authorities. Upon investigation, it was found the scam was part of a larger fraud operation involving call centres with offices set up in neighbouring countries, Khaosod reported. “I want to warn the offenders that opening a ‘money mule’ account is the cause of a fraud or call centre gang. In this case, the scammer had a dark heart, causing a student to lose all her savings,” said Pathum Thani Police Commander, Lt. Col. Theeradech Thammasuthee. The Thai man’s remarkable comeback has been made possible due to the unwavering support of his employer and the customers who have applauded the company’s compassionate approach. The touching tale was recently shared on the Facebook page of Digital Door Lock, a renowned door installation company in Rama IX, Bangkok. One day, the unnamed craftsman, who was an employee of the company, called to inform his boss that he had been hit by a car in Bangkok, but he believed it was not too serious, perhaps just a broken leg. Upon arriving at the hospital, however, the doctor delivered the devastating news that his leg would need to be amputated from the knee down. The company immediately travelled to the hospital to assist and support him through the ordeal, reassuring him that they would take care of all expenses, as well as his family. During the two years he was on leave, the company maintained constant communication with him, reassuring him that he was still part of the team and they were waiting for his return. He laughed and remained positive throughout the ordeal, determined to get back to his normal life. Once able-bodied, the craftsman had to adjust to using crutches and underwent four surgeries to enable the use of a prosthetic leg. Recognized by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy, Phuket is well-known for its vast variety of enticing and delicious cuisine. With the southern Thai tourism hub now vying to be chosen to host the 2028 Specialized Expo, it’s important to understand that its rich culinary tapestry is a reflection of an even richer history of multicultural melding and the coming together of different communities both within and beyond Thailand. City of gastronomy Encouraged, at the time, by the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Phuket in 2012 applied to be a UNESCO Creative City and was named a Creative City of Gastronomy. Phuket’s selection underlined that through its varied mix of cultures, the city was naturally endowed with a wide breadth of dishes drawing on influences spanning Thailand, China, Malaysia, the Muslim world, and even Europe and India. Moreover, the title highlights how modern-day Phuket is a wellspring of new culinary creations borne from its tapestry of cultures and an embracing of change. The City of Gastronomy offers not only dishes with origins from across the world, but unique dining experiences, rare gastronomic sensations, and the never-ending possibilities for new creations. The cultures that comprise Phuket Originally inhabited by seafaring ethnic groups of the Andaman, Phuket’s viability as a port town and rich natural resources have made it the adoptive home of various cultures and races for centuries. Starting in the 15th and 16th centuries, Srivijaya-Tamil Jolha peoples began occupying the area, bringing with them a range of spices from what would today be Indonesia and South Asia. With the coming of the Siritham Nakorn Kingdom in the 17th century, Phuket was given dishes and recipes that still pervade the Thai south to this day. Siamese, or Thai, cuisine would soon follow, with the influence of both the Sukhothai Kingdom and the subsequent Ayutthaya Kingdom, when trade with the Western world also introduced food cultures from further reaches. By the time of the current Rattanakosin period, in which Phuket would come into its own as a province, the island would receive gastronomic traditions from places such as Britain, Portugal, China, and Malaysia. The two latter groups have become particularly indicative of Phuket’s ability to not only embrace different ethnicities but to support their evolution and the birthing of completely new cultures. Chinese immigrants arriving during Phuket’s most recent mining boom assimilated into the city and the region down to Malaysia by marrying ethnically Malay and Thai residents, eventually bringing about the Peranakan or Baba-Nyonya culture responsible for much of the town’s most distinct traditions and gastronomic offerings. Borderless gastronomy A look at Phuket’s favorite local dishes makes its diverse history and readiness to celebrate creativity abundantly clear: Kanom Jeen Phuket Phuket locals prefer starting their day with Kanom Jeen, or rice noodles, served with a variety of fresh vegetables, a boiled egg, fish cakes and an assortment of curries. While the noodles and their accompaniments are found throughout Southeast Asia due to the influence of the Mon people, Phuket’s approach is especially telling of its diversity. The morning menu item is eaten with bold curries featuring ingredients local to the southern region, mixed together for an entire spectrum of flavor ready to satisfy people of any background. O Tao On the streets of Phuket is an item beloved by locals and notably rare beyond the province. O Tao is a Phuket take on the popular Hokkien oyster omelet unique for its creamier texture, versus the omelet’s usually crispy presentation, as well as its use of taro. Usually stir-fried over a charcoal fire for a smoky fragrance, the savory pancake-like dish features small oysters in a batter of eggs, flour, and lard. Huchae Cooling off during the afternoons, Phuketians choose Huchae. This colorful salad is equal parts tart, sweet, savory, and spicy, especially due to the distinct Huchae dressing put over its assembly of lettuce, bean sprouts, water spinach, cucumber, yams, corn, and deep-fried tofu. Crunchy and refreshing, the increasingly rare Huchae salad shares many resemblances to other southern salads that trace their origins back to what is modern-day Pakistan. O-Aew When it comes time for dessert in Phuket, it’s time for O-Aew. A shaved ice treat that has become a local specialty of Phuket, O-Aew is the island’s version of aiyu jelly, a Hokkien sweet that has made it as far as Taiwan. The kind found in Phuket split off with the arrival of people from Penang during the tin mining boom, and definitively local additions have made their way into the now multi-colored dish ever since. Local flavors, global goals The colorful and storied cuisine that draws millions of people to it daily has also uniquely equipped Phuket to be a place of multicultural cooperation, inspiration, and change. Actualizing this, Thailand has proposed that Phuket host the next Specialised Expo — an international event series designed to respond to a precise challenge facing humanity. Titling the proposed event “Expo 2028 Phuket,” the theme of the international function is to be “Future of Life: Living in Harmony, Sharing Prosperity” with the focus to be put on balancing health and wealth, ensuring all lives can thrive and prosper and the environment and nature are restored. Team Thailand has assured it will “create tangible benefits for the global community, especially as a platform for changes and cooperation at the policy level, and in providing inspiration for the new generation.” Importantly, Phuket is to provide a platform for “cooperation in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.” Harmony and progress With its long history of welcoming different ethnicities and cultures and providing them a place to thrive and meld with others, Phuket has been blessed with a unique and diverse array of cuisine.
