  2. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government forecast Thai fresh bananas and their goods to Japan will generate up to 1.07 billion baht this year due to their popular demand in the Eastern Asian country. Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri stated that demands for bananas in Japan have been rising since the fruit is tasty and healthy and can be used as ingredients for desserts. He said that Japan’s weather is not suitable for banana cultivation, causing low yields that could not meet the country’s demand. As a result, the country imports more than 1 million tonnes of bananas per year. According to the spokesperson, Caretaker Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha made clear his satisfaction with Thai bananas and their products being popular in other countries. The Prime Minister expressed confidence in the quality of Thai fruit being recognized by many countries and urged officials to provide full assistance in expanding these opportunities for the Thai people. The spokesperson stated that Thailand can use privileges under the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement, one of which exempts Thailand from tariffs on 8,000 tonnes of bananas, which expands opportunities for Thai farmers and businesses. He assures that the government is prepared to market Thai fruits in order to meet international demand, as well as boost the potential of fruit exporters and farmers in the country. 4. BANGKOK (NNT) - The prime minister is encouraging Thai businesses to leverage the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) to increase their opportunities and improve their competitiveness in the global market. Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha strives to encourage the use of benefits afforded to Thai businesses under the RCEP agreement. The free trade deal is now implemented by all 15 member economies, which encompasses about 30% of the global population as well as 30% of global GDP. Anucha elaborated RCEP became fully enforced by member economies after its implementation by the Philippines on June 2, 2015. The agreement is believed to promote trade between Thailand and other member economies, as well as increase marketing opportunities and employment for Thai businesses and the Thai public. The free trade deal is also expected to improve trade convenience for Thai businesses and the economic environment in which Thailand navigates. The spokesman cited Department of Foreign Trade information pointing to Thailand having reaped benefits worth 97.04 million USD from the RCEP agreement in January this year, from exports to 9 countries. These included Japan, China, South Korea, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Key export products that benefited from RCEP in January 2023 included lubricating oil, cassava chip, canned tuna, and spark plugs. Anucha added that the government stands ready to facilitate convenience and provide counseling for entrepreneurs seeking to leverage the RCEP deal, so that Thai businesses would be able to optimally utilize RCEP. 22. The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) investigation is preparing to take legal action against Suwichak Nakwatcharachai, the former secretary-general of the House of Representatives, over allegations of his involvement in the irregular procurement of overpriced clocks worth 15.4 million baht for the parliament back in 2013. An inside source at the NACC revealed that a recent board meeting provided evidence supporting the accusations against Suwichak. He was reportedly part of a group of parliamentary officials that helped Equipment Co secure the winning bid by manipulating the specifications of the Bodet clock, even though the firm failed to register the clock properly. During the investigation, the NACC discovered that bid documents, such as a performance certification and a contract containing a price offer, had been falsified. Moreover, it was found that the company, rather than importing clocks from a distributor, sourced them from Precious Time Trading, another contender for the bid. Although Suwichak will not face disciplinary action since he has already been removed from his position in the House, the NACC plans to file a lawsuit against him with the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct. Beginning on July 17, traders will be required to hold a certificate of import to import timber, processed wood, and wooden artefacts. Additionally, starting August 16, the export of Siamese rosewood (phayung) will be prohibited, Bangkok Post reports. The director-general of the Foreign Trade Department, Ronnarong Phoolpipat, emphasised that the new timber regulations aim to bring the current trade situation in line with international standards.
