More than 60 city officials, police officers, and immigration, including Wuttisak Rerkmakij, Deputy Mayor of Pattaya City, joined in an operation to inspect beggars yesterday, June 21st. 3. The slight lean in the four mondops, Thai religious architectural features, towards the central tower, or prang, of Bangkok’s famous Wat Arun is not threatening the structure of the main prang, according to Phanombootra Chandrajoti, director-general of the Fine Arts Department. He said today (Thursday) that the three-dimensional scans of the structures, conducted by officials from the Art and Cultural Heritage Information Technology Centre, shows that the mondop, a square or cruciform building with a pointed roof, on the southern side of the principal prang has tilted slightly towards the main tower, but this poses threat to the structure. He explained that the slight lean of the mondop might have occurred, due of the type of soil in Bangkok, either when the building was first constructed or when it underwent repairs. 7. Police have released a map indicating alternative routes to help reduce traffic disruptions after the temporary closure of a 1-kilometre stretch of road for flood prevention works in Patong. The section affected from Soi Banzaan to Soi Nanai Ruamjai (Soi Nanai 8 ) has been closed since Tuesday. The road closure was originally scheduled until August 26, although recent notices from police suggest alternative routes should be followed until only July 5, without further clarification. The escalation of the Phuket road closure was aimed at facilitating the construction of a “sand trap (SP1)” near the wastewater treatment plant, as explained by the police in their initial announcement. This construction work is part of the flood-prevention system devised by the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning. The project, with a budget of around US$222 million, was started in 2016 and has not been completed to date, reported The Phuket News. The latest notice from Patong Police presents an alternative route for southbound traffic approaching the closed section of the road. They recommend turning left onto Soi Banzaan, then right onto Nanai Road, and continuing southbound. For traffic entering Patong from the south, either turning left or right at the roundabout at the southern end of the town would help avoid the affected area. 13. A tragic car accident claimed the life of a 65 year old Thai woman, Sakorn, amid the grieving period for her mother’s funeral. The incident has reportedly piled sorrow on the family who were just recovering from their recent loss. The accident occurred at around 8am today, on the road connecting Nakhon Si Thammarat and Pak Phanang. The investigating officers from Nakhon Si Thammarat Police Station were notified of a collision between a car and a motorbike, resulting in a fatality. The scene of the accident was observed near the junction between Pak Nakhon and Tha Ruea, leading into the city centre, Sanook reported. At the scene, a white sedan was found parked by the side of the road. Its right-side front was crushed, the windshield marked with the impact of a person’s head. A short distance away, a damaged blue motorbike was observed on the road, and 20 metres from there was Sakorn’s brutally injured body, with severe head wounds. The driver of the car, a health worker from the Nakhon Si Thammarat Maharaj Hospital, had minor injuries and was immediately taken for medical care. Amidst the chaotic scene, the deceased’s relatives were seen profoundly grieving. They had just organised the funeral of Sakorn’s 95 year old mother, known as Aian, yesterday. The double death has struck the family hard, especially since they had just performed the ashes collection ritual of the late mother. 15. Authorities in Chon Buri province tracked down and arrested a young staff member who enticed a new female employee to stay with him, assaulting her later, and eventually fleeing the case. Thanachai, a 21 year old man, was apprehended today per the court order of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya on charges of “Using brute force to commit indecent assault and deprive a juvenile aged over 15 years but not exceeding 18 years for obscenity.” The arrest took place at a mansion on a main road in Mueang Chon Buri. The molestation case unfolded back in 2022 when Thanachai was an employee at a local convenience store in Bang Pa-in district, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. During that period, Thanachai lured a young female coworker, Bee (pseudonym), who was just 17, to meet him in his room. Being a senior colleague, he was trusted and Bee consented to visit his residence. Upon her arrival, Thanachai forcefully violated her. After the harrowing incident, Bee confided in a guardian who then reported it to the police, reported KhaoSod. Suspecting a case would be filed, Thanachai fled the area. The Crime Suppression Division police later found that Thanachai was hiding in Chon Buri province and arrested him. 17. The urgency of tackling climate change and transitioning towards a sustainable future has drawn increased attention to the importance of sustainable financing in recent years. With every investment decision holding the potential to mould the fate of the planet, governments, corporations, and financial institutions are recognising the significance of funding environmentally friendly initiatives. The push for a net-zero carbon economy is crucial, as approximately 50 gigatonnes of greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere yearly. Approximately US$100 trillion in investments will be needed by 2050 to ensure the balance between annual emissions and removals is net zero. This monumental challenge calls for collaboration and concerted efforts from diverse stakeholders – governments, regulators, financial institutions, investors, consumers and real economy participants – who together can redefine the future of our planet through sustainable financing. Despite numerous ambitious goals declared by countries worldwide, a misalignment can often be observed between national commitments and the global net-zero emission pathway. This disparity threatens the actualisation of an environmentally sustainable future. For countries like Thailand, sustainable development is imperative, with a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 to 40% by 2030, reach carbon neutrality by 2050, and attain net-zero emissions by 2065. Tan Choon Hin, President and CEO of UOB Thailand, believes it is crucial that we strike a balance between socioeconomic considerations and our net-zero aspirations in order to ensure a just and smooth transition to a greener future. 19. Progress has been made in managing household waste and reducing carbon emissions at a local level in Thailand, with the Ministry of Interior (MOI) celebrating the success of the ‘Food Waste Management for Climate Action and a Commitment to Sustainable Thailand’ project. This project aims to broaden emissions reduction efforts and manage carbon credits in alignment with the United Nations’ (UN) objectives. Local government organisations have been handling household waste through the Waste Management for Climate Action programme, spearheaded by Suttipong Juljarern, permanent secretary for the interior. Collaborating on this project are Gita Sabharwal, the UN resident coordinator in Thailand, Krit Jitjang, the managing director of Kasikornbank, and the governors of pilot provinces Lamphun, Loei, Amnat Charoen, and Samut Songkhram. At an event celebrating this accomplishment, Suttipong revealed that since 2019, the MOI has collaborated with local governments in all 76 provinces to address waste management issues and has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UN to develop this project. The Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) certified these efforts into carbon credits, with earnings from private-sector credit trading being reinvested into community development, reported Bangkok Post today. 21. A new law issued by royal decree will come into effect on August 21, aimed at regulating digital platforms in Thailand while promoting transparency and consumer protection, according to Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn. The digital platform service law was was first published in the Royal Gazette on December 23, 2022. Upon implementation, digital platforms looking to conduct business in Thailand will have to provide their business information to the country’s Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) before commencing operations. Existing operators have been given until November 18 to submit their details. With the goal of regulating digital platforms, this decree mandates that large platform operators, based on revenue or the number of users, report key information such as their value of transactions, gross income from their services, the proportion of income from digital platforms operating in Thailand, and user figures to authorities on a yearly basis. Direct business-to-consumer platforms will not fall under the scope of this regulation. Notably, the earlier draft of the decree required foreign operators to designate local representatives. However, the updated version of the digital platforms regulation demands only the appointment of a point of contact to communicate the necessary information, reported Bangkok Post. Approximately 1,000 major digital platform operators including Facebook, YouTube, Google, and numerous e-marketplaces are anticipated to be impacted by this law. Digital platforms required to comply include legal entities earning more than 50 million baht annually and individuals making over 1.8 million baht per year.
