  12. A unique Thai village is gaining lucrative income from capturing and processing tokay geckoes, generating hundreds of thousands of baht (US$2,860) per month during the hot season. In the northeast province of Nakhon Phanom, villagers from Ban Tal in Nah Wah district are seizing the opportunity to capture the amphibians that thrive in the warm weather. Ban Tal Thai Village, known as the mysterious village of unique seasonal occupations, has been relying on this profitable tokay gecko trade for over 30 years. Each hot season, from March to July, villagers capture geckoes and sell them to processing groups, Sanook reported. The tokay geckoes are then dried and exported to China, where they are believed to be an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. This has provided substantial income for some families, who can earn up to hundreds of thousands of baht per month. Sawai, a 55 year old villager and gecko exporter from Ban Tal, shared the process of preparing and selling the geckoes. The preparation includes gutting the amphibians, keeping their skin intact, and placing them on sticks to dry overnight. The processed geckoes are then exported to China, with an insatiable demand for the product. It has been a well-known scam for decades where taxis and limos take detours to their ‘brothers’ hotel, gem factories or souvenir shops (where they get huge commissions). Phuket tourist police say the detours are a violation of the terms governing the company’s concession to operate at the airport. The authorities have also requested that the offenders’ driving licences be suspended. The report quotes a National News Bureau of Thailand story from the Thai government which is high on rhetoric but low, or misleading, in actual facts. The Vice President of the Phuket Tourist Association claims that unlike pre-pandemic times, most of the current Chinese tourists are free and independent travellers (FITs), with Chinese tour group numbers still relatively low. That, at least, is true for now with Chinese travellers exceeding arrivals from all other countries over the past month. By Peter Roche Caption: File photo. 20. Once upon a time, Phuket was known for its pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, and seasonal waves of tourists. But fast forward to today, and you’ll find an island that has deftly charted a course beyond sun, sea, and sand to the heart of technological innovation. Sure, it still has those sparkling beaches, but Phuket’s transformation from a resort city to a smart city is nothing short of remarkable. And it’s not just about fancy tech, either. It’s about creating a smarter, safer, and more sustainable environment for both residents and tourists alike. Phuket 2.0: The Smart City transformation Phuket has metamorphosed into a smart city, armed with technology to tackle overtourism and improve the quality of life for everyone. By leveraging partnerships with the U.S. Trade and Development Agency and the Japan Association for Smart Cities in ASEAN, Phuket has become a digital wonderland. Picture this: Free public Wi-Fi, GPS-enabled buses, security cameras with data analytics, “smart piers” with digital IDs, and environmental sensors for real-time data on water reserves, tide levels, and air quality. That’s Phuket for you, a place where innovation is just part of daily life. Born and bred innovation in Phuket Far from resting on its laurels, Phuket is breeding its own homegrown innovations. Here are just a few examples: 1. Emergence of tech ecosystem: Phuket’s tech ecosystem is witnessing rapid growth, thanks to innovative tech start-ups, emerging co-working spaces, tech events, and green transport initiatives such as the Charge & Chill campaign. 2. Education and tech talent cultivation: The Phuket Smart City Innovation Park functions as an innovation hub, fostering tech learning and development. The park houses the Building Information Modelling (BIM) innovation center, acting as a virtualized city for in-depth study of development and investment. The park also offers an exploratory learning center for the Internet of Things (IoT), making technology from global IT vendors accessible. Key contributors to this growth include Prince of Songkla University, which nurtures future tech talent, and the Software Industry Promotion Agency (SIPA), which provides business consultation for tech startups and encourages digital investment. 3. Digital infrastructure enhancements: As part of Phuket’s digital transformation, CAT Telecom is rolling out 1,000 public free Wi-Fi access points, initially made available in Patong and Phuket Old Town. 4. Smart governance: The city is adopting a holistic approach that includes improvements in economy, tourism, environment, healthcare, education, and smart governance, all with the aim of achieving a “Smile, Smart, and Sustainable Phuket.” 5. Safety, security, and surveillance: The city is working to integrate its city-wide installation of CCTVs for analytic purposes, providing real-time monitoring and alerts. The integration of smart data analytics solutions is underway to enhance safety measures against epidemics, crimes, and environmental threats. Furthermore, innovative smart community platforms and mobile applications are being developed for advanced data collection, analysis, and processing to further improve public security and attract tourists. 6. Promoting tourism: Various initiatives are in progress to bolster Phuket’s status as a marine city, including the integration of a tourist database of yacht services in the Andaman, with Chalong Pier functioning as the yacht checkpoint. Phuket’s global appeal Phuket’s innovative spirit and smart city infrastructure are making waves in the tech world, drawing in international companies and startups alike. Among them is the Australian data center Edge, reflecting Phuket’s ability to attract and support technologically advanced operations. Moreover, the island’s status as an ASEAN Smart City Network member positions it in an influential role, sharing its innovations and learning from other smart cities across Southeast Asia. Yet, the appeal of Phuket extends beyond tech prowess. The island’s tropical climate, stunning landscapes, and rich culture, coupled with modern amenities, make it an irresistible destination for global tech talent. This balance of lifestyle and innovation forms a compelling combination, solidifying Phuket’s reputation as an emerging global innovation hub. 23. BANGKOK (NNT) - An agreement has been reached to open more positions for doctors and nurses to address the shortage of medical staff in the state sector. The Ministry of Public Health and the Civil Service Commission (CSC) agreed on various measures to address the ongoing issue of personnel shortage while reducing the number of doctors and nurses leaving the state sector to join private hospitals. According to Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health, the plan is to create 35,000 additional positions for doctors and 140,000 new positions for nurses within the next three years. Medical schools will meanwhile increase the number of admissions for medical students each year, allowing for more graduates in the future. The ministry and the CSC also agreed that some regulations will be reviewed for specialists as part of efforts to prevent them from leaving the state sector. Resignations at state hospitals, especially among interns, have risen in recent years, increasingly affecting the effectiveness and efficiency of public hospitals that provide public health services. Due to personnel shortages, doctors have had to work longer hours in order to accommodate an increasing number of patients, resulting in overwork for the remaining medical staff at public hospitals. 25. Early Health Technology Assessment, or early HTA, is a tool that can help health innovations to meet the needs of the global health system. The approach was utilized by World Health Organization (WHO) in early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, but is not yet widely known. “Early HTA” was explained by experts at a workshop organised as a collaboration between the Health Intervention and Technology Assessment Program Foundation (HITAP Foundation) and the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health of the National University of Singapore (NUS), along with 3 leading agencies in Thailand, Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI), the Thailand Center of Excellence for Life Sciences (Public Organization) or TCELS, and the National Health Security Office (NHSO). Dr. Yot Teerawattananon, Secretary General of the HITAP Foundation, and Dr. Wang Yi, Assistant Professor at Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, National University of Singapore, said that it is a process for assessing the possible impacts of the use of technology in healthcare and it can evaluate factors that can advance a health innovation to be desirable and marketable. Additionally, it can also show whether it is a worth investing in research and development of a certain health innovation.
