  5. Two economists from the World Bank, Ndiame Diop and Hassan Zaman, have stressed the critical need for political stability, urgent reforms and the development of high-value-added sectors in Thailand, to ensure sustainable long-term growth. In an exclusive interview with Nattha Komolvadhin of Thai PBS World, they shared their insights and highlighted the key areas requiring attention. “I think the recent election in Thailand is momentous for Thailand. We all hope for Thailand to embark on a period of political stability,” remarked Diop, the World Bank’s Country Director for Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand. He also emphasised that political stability, alongside effective policy and economic reforms, can make Thailand highly competitive and foster rapid growth. Thailand has made significant strides in social and economic development, transitioning from a low-income to an upper middle-income country within a generation. It has, however, faced challenges in escaping the middle-income trap for over 20 years. To achieve its ambition of becoming a high-income country, Thailand needs to sustain a growth rate of 5 to 5.5 percent, a considerable increase from the current 3.5 percent. The 42 year old suspect later surrendered today at a local police station and confessed to the crime, citing jealousy as the motive. The victim’s family was outraged when the husband arrived at the police station, with one relative assaulting him and others demanding to know why he killed the woman. On a tragic day, Narongwit Phet-srimuang attacked his wife, Siriwan (surname withheld) with a hammer, leaving her critically injured. The assault took place on a road in Sing Buri province after Siriwan finished work. She was later taken to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, June 4. The perpetrator went into hiding after the incident and was identified by police as the victim’s jealous husband, leading authorities to issue an arrest warrant and search for him. Narongwit turned himself in at the Sing Buri Police Station today. The police were able to secure a confession from him. He admitted to assaulting his wife out of jealousy. He claimed that he had gone to confront Siriwan at her workplace and followed her before attacking her with a hammer. After fleeing the scene, he returned home, changed clothes and called his child to contact their mother. Upon discovering that the police were informed about the crime, he escaped to his relative’s house in Khon Kaen before eventually deciding to surrender. 15. The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) of Thailand halted the supply of electricity to two Myanmar border towns following a request from the Myanmar government. These towns, located across the Moei River, have been the site of significant illegal investments by groups of Chinese businessmen. Shwe Kokko and Ban Le Le Ko, both situated in Myanmar’s Karen State, are the two border towns affected by the power cut. Shwe Kokko is located opposite Thailand’s Ban Wang Pha in Tambon Mae Charao, Mae Ramat district, while Ban Le Le Ko is situated opposite Mae Ku Mai Tha Sung, the Moo 3 village in Tambon Mae Ku, Mae Sot district. Chinese investors have reportedly poured over US$1.5 billion into casinos, entertainment complexes, and housing estates in Shwe Kokko, with similar investments made in Ban Le Le Ko. The Myanmar government’s request to cut off the electricity supply to these towns has been met with compliance from the PEA, which stopped providing power from midnight. However, the reasons behind this decision remain unclear, with some speculating that it may be connected to a memorandum of understanding signed by Thailand, China, and Myanmar. This agreement focuses on the joint suppression of drugs, cross-border criminals, online gambling, and call centres. A Thai businessman involved in cross-border trade revealed that residents of Shwe Kokko had anticipated the power outage and purchased generators for their personal use, reported Bangkok Post. Good Samaritans and a police officer immediately rushed to help the injured pair in the incident that happened on a rainy morning. The left arm of the boy, age 12, a student of Wat Tha Sua-an School, became entangled in the wheel of their blue Honda Wave motorcycle, causing it to break. His mother, 41, who was driving the vehicle, sustained multiple injuries across her body. Police officer Yutthapong Somkamphet, who stumbled upon the scene while on patrol, provided water to clean their wounds and comforted the distressed child, as they waited for help to arrive. The good Samaritan witnesses, who spotted the mother and son as they retreated to take cover from the rain, used some canvas to shield the child from getting wet. Eventually, they managed to detach the wheel and free the boy’s arm. Both victims were given first aid treatment before being transported to Chularat 11 Hospital for further medical attention.
