  1. BTSC Plans Investment for Yellow Line Extension BANGKOK (NNT) - Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc (BTSC) has expressed its readiness to invest in a 2.6-kilometer extension that will connect its Yellow Line monorail to the Green Line of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) at Ratchayothin and Lat Phrao stations. 2. BANGKOK (NNT) - Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc (BTSC) has expressed its readiness to invest in a 2.6-kilometer extension that will connect its Yellow Line monorail to the Green Line of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) at Ratchayothin and Lat Phrao stations. BTSC CEO Surapong Laoha-Unya emphasized the benefits of this extension for commuters and expressed their willingness to discuss the matter with the MRTA. Currently, the Yellow Line connects Lat Phrao in Bangkok to Samrong in Samut Prakan, with 23 stations along its 30.4-kilometer route. The monorail already has a connection to the MRTA’s Green Line at Samrong station. The proposed missing link would run along Ratchadaphisek Road in Bangkok and provide a direct connection to the Green Line at Ratchayothin station. The estimated cost of the extension project is approximately 3-4 billion baht. Without this missing link, passengers would have to take a longer route via the MRTA’s Blue Line, resulting in increased travel costs. If the MRTA agrees to BTSC’s proposal to invest in the missing link, they may request compensation for lost revenues from their Blue Line. BTSC plans to commence a trial service of the Yellow Line at 9 am on Saturday, with a full commercial launch expected at the beginning of the following month. The company has submitted an estimated fare range, based on the consumer price index (CPI), to the MRTA for approval, with rates set between 15 and 45 baht. Once approved by the MRTA, the proposal will be submitted to the Ministry of Transport and the cabinet for further approval. 4. Rayong police have launched an investigation into the mysterious death of an unemployed Thai man, whose lifeless body was discovered yesterday in an auctioned commercial building. Authorities are exploring various potential causes of death, including pre-existing health conditions or the possibility of intentional suicide. Police became aware that the new owner of the building had repeatedly requested the 52 year old man to vacate the premises. At 5pm yesterday, Komkrit Hongthong, an officer from Rayong City Police Station, received a report regarding a body found in a commercial building located in Rayong’s city area. Accompanied by a medical examiner and a rescue team from Sawang Phon Kuson, the officer initiated the investigation. Upon arrival, the team encountered a crowd of locals gathered outside the two-storey building, its front adorned with glass, emanating a strong and pungent odour. In order to gain access, authorities had to forcefully enter the locked property, where they discovered a decomposing body on a sofa. It was estimated that the individual had been deceased for at least three days. Preliminary findings from the investigation did not indicate any signs of a struggle. Inside the property, investigators discovered a plate of rotten food and two sachets of mineral salts, which were collected as evidence for further examination. The body was subsequently transferred to Rayong Hospital for an autopsy to ascertain the precise cause of death. The elderly woman managed to crawl into the grassy area beside the road, where she was eventually found today by her distressed grandchildren. The road was in the middle of a residential area. Security camera footage in the locality showed a suspicious vehicle dropping her off on the day of the incident. A woman was seen enquiring about the whereabouts of the 97 year old grandmother in the area before leaving her there. The children of the elderly woman, who helped her when she was discovered, expressed their anger at her daughter for abandoning her. According to them, the grandmother, who had been staying with them for over a year, was taken to Phang Nga province by her younger daughter, who then returned her back, leaving her about 50 metres from her home. 10. Hopes are high among small breweries and local distilleries in Thailand as the Move Forward Party (MFP) seeks to liberalise the alcohol industry. The current heavily monopolised industry has made it challenging for small businesses to thrive due to strict laws and regulations controlling production and retailing. Taopiphop Limjittrakorn, the MFP MP in Bangkok’s Constituency 22 and a leading liquor liberalisation campaigner stated that amending these laws to promote fairer competition for small enterprises and breaking the liquor industry monopoly will be one of the party’s first actions in parliament. Taopiphop said… “Our first step will be to amend the ministerial regulations on liquor production, which can be done within the first week of the first parliamentary session to unlock the remaining barriers preventing small-scale distilleries from entering the business.” Supapong Pruenglampoo, the co-founder of Sandport Brewery, a small craft brewery in the Chatuchak district, is one entrepreneur directly affected by the restrictive rules. He claims that these rules were written heavily in favour of giant conglomerates and designed to deter small firms from entering the industry. Despite the rules for craft brewery registration being lifted in 2022, the criteria for distilled spirits remain the same, requiring a minimum production capacity of 30,000 litres per day to obtain a licence for distilled spirit production, reported Bangkok Post. Thanakorn Tuamsa-ngiam, founder of Prachachon Beer (Beer People), a social network group advocating for liquor liberalisation, said the enforcement of laws is also a significant problem. He said… “When enforcing alcohol control rules, officials often overlook the misdeeds of big companies and instead focus on prosecuting small business owners. They can interpret the law to penalise small businesses and ordinary people deliberately.” By Mitch Connor Caption: Photo Courtesy of Istock Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/move-forward-party-aims-to-break-thailands-alcohol-monopoly -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-06-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Plai Sak Surin, also known as Muthu Raja in Sri Lanka, was given to the Sri Lankan government by Thailand in 2001. Over 22 years have passed since Plai Sak Surin was sent to Sri Lanka for training to participate in the annual sacred Tooth Relic ceremony. The Thai Department of Marine and Coastal Resources recently received a complaint from the Rally for Animal Rights & Environment (RARE), a Sri Lankan animal rights organization, about the elephant’s heavy workload and neglect. Plai Sak Surin was found to be emaciated, with a visible spine, rough skin, an abnormal left front leg, sores on the hips, and thin foot pads due to excessive standing. 14. Investors were cautioned by stock market regulators regarding Stark Corporation’s shares, as the company is expected to default on payments for corporate bonds valued at nearly 9.2 billion baht. Following a bondholders’ meeting, Stark announced its intention to “call default” on two bond series worth 2.24 billion baht within a month, raising concerns about the company’s ability to pay for three other bond series valued at approximately 6.96 billion baht. Vonnarat Tangkaravakoon, a major shareholder and director, stated in a filing to the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) that the company’s decision to call default makes it highly unlikely that Stark will be able to pay for the three other bond series, also known as “cross default”. Kasikornbank is the representative for four out of the five corporate bond series that Stark is expected to default on. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) opened a bond information centre to provide investors with necessary information about the bonds, while bondholders’ representatives must follow up on the legal debt repayment process. The SET also issued a warning for trading Stark shares, which resumed after a three-month suspension. Vonnarat Tangkaravakoon mentioned that other financial creditors might also call for the same treatment as bondholders, and the company is considering negotiating a solution with creditors. He also emphasised the need for caution in paying any group of creditors, as it may negatively affect negotiations with other groups. 16. The Thai Cabinet‘s recent decision to extend employment contracts for over 200,000 migrant workers has alleviated concerns about a domestic labour shortage. Poj Aramwattananont, vice-chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and president of the Labour and Skill Development Committee, said the move addresses management issues related to migrant workers while easing the worker shortage in industries requiring intensive labour or involving dangerous, dirty, or difficult jobs. The decision eases financial pressure on both employers and employees. Poj said… “The economy is recovering as the country opened up following the pandemic. The clear engine driving the economy is labour, and the development of human capital is important at all levels.” Thailand is facing structural problems, with severe shortages in both the quantity and quality of labour, especially in the tourism, service, construction and real estate, food processing, and small business sectors. These sectors have a high demand for a large number of workers to support the country’s economic growth. “The chamber and the Federation of Thai Industries [FTI], together with the Labour Ministry and the Department of Employment, have joined forces to accelerate the resolution through a memorandum of understanding [MoU].” The Cabinet approved a Labour Ministry proposal on the management of migrant workers in two groups: an MoU on foreign workers from Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, and an agreement on foreign workers from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam. The approval was based on a Cabinet resolution from July 5, 2022, and another dated February 7, 2023. As a result, these workers can continue to work in Thailand until July 2023. 22. BANGKOK (NNT) - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the Thai government have joined forces to strengthen their efforts to end childhood statelessness in Thailand. Officials from the government and representatives from these organizations have pledged to work together in accelerating their objectives to end childhood statelessness in a seminar in Bangkok on Tuesday. The seminar, which is part of the UNHCR-Unicef Joint Strategy for Addressing Childhood Statelessness, aims at analyzing Thailand’s progress while highlighting hurdles and identifying solutions and areas for improved cooperation for all related parties. The Thai government has endorsed UNHCR’s #IBelong campaign to end statelessness by 2024 and has vowed to provide a path to attaining legal status or nationality for stateless people, including children, as well as to improve their access to protection, education, and social services. Over 63,000 registered stateless people have gained Thai citizenship since 2015. The law also states that any child born in Thailand has the right to register at birth, obtain a birth certificate, attend school, and receive health care even if they do not have legal status or any paperwork. According to UNHCR Representative Giuseppe de Vincentiis, Thailand has made significant progress in legislation and policy to address the statelessness issue, but tackling childhood statelessness is still ongoing in the country. He said the UNHCR will continue to support the government and related parties to build on its progress to end childhood statelessness, as well as make further commitments at the Global Refugee Forum for this year. Meanwhile, Unicef Representative for Thailand Kyungsun Kim emphasized the importance of having a nationality or legal status to protect children’s rights. She stressed that it’s a fundamental right that allows children to enjoy other basic rights such as protection, education, survival, and meaningful participation. Department of International Organizations Director-General Eksiri Pintaruji stressed that the event not only allows everybody involved to evaluate their progress in addressing childhood statelessness, but it also brings all parties together to speed up efforts to solve the issue in the country.
