BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has garnered international recognition as UNESCO has designated five cities in the country as Creative Cities in various categories including gastronomy, crafts, folk arts and design. The announcement was made by Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri, who emphasized the presence of diverse creative talents and cultural heritage in these cities. Phuket was the first to receive UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy status in 2015. The local food industry on the island generates an impressive annual revenue of approximately US$3.6 billion. The province’s traditional food varieties, deeply rooted in the local culture and passed down through generations, have contributed to its UNESCO recognition. Chiang Mai, renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and folk arts, was recognized as a UNESCO Creative City in 2017. The province has long been celebrated for its expertise in wood crafts, as well as the production of ceramics, niello and silver wares. In 2019, Bangkok earned UNESCO Creative City status in the field of design. The accolade was awarded to Bangkok for its unique blend of old and modern designs, reflecting the diversity of its people and the evolution of the city’s design landscape. Sukhothai, similar to Chiang Mai, was honored as a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Arts. The province boasts an impressive community of over 1,300 artisans who are involved in various community-based industries such as textile weaving, ceramic ware production, and crafting of gold, silver, and Sangkhalok ceramics. Meanwhile, Phetchaburi, known for its ecological diversity and traditional community recipes, was designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. The recognition highlights the region’s rich culinary traditions and commitment to preserving its cultural and natural heritage through traditional community recipes. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has announced the establishment of the Big Data Institute (BDI), a new public agency aimed at effectively managing the vast amount of data generated by the public and state agencies. The development comes amid government efforts to leverage big data for economic and social advancements and to shape future policies. Scheduled to be operational within 180 days, the BDI will supersede the existing Government Big Data Institute (GBDi) that was inaugurated in May 2019. As the first public agency in Thailand to utilize big data for public benefit, the BDI will cater to various sectors seeking data-driven solutions to address challenges, enhance productivity and formulate economic policies. One of the key roles of the institute will be to provide big data analysis services and support innovative projects adhering to international standards. In addition, the BDI will facilitate the growth of the data analysis industry and contribute to the training of professionals in the field of big data. According to the Royal Gazette, the BDI will hold the authority to oversee the development of big data in accordance with existing laws and government directives. It can also collaborate with the public sector, seeking their support for any necessary cooperation. The Digital Economy Promotion Agency (Depa), operating under the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES), has been actively promoting the use of big data for national progress, including during the tenure of the GBDi. The previous institute successfully streamlined over 100 projects undertaken by 67 state agencies and played a crucial role in developing platforms such as Health Link, Travel Link, Youth Link and CO-Link. Improving to a 2-2 win-loss record and seven points, Thailand climbed to eighth place in the current standings, while Korea fought hard but had to settle for their fourth straight-set defeat since the start of the competition. The Thai players also outplayed their opponents in attack with 48 successful spikes against 41. Outside hitter Chatchu-On Moksri delivered the match high of 20 points, which included two kill blocks and two aces. Opposite Pimpichaya Kokram made another 13, while middle blocker Thatdao added four attacking points to her seven stuffs for a total tally of 11 points. Korean outside and captain Park Jeongah meanwhile had three kill blocks of her own to lead her team on a total score of 14 points. Thailand stampeded into the match on a 4-0 run, delivering a one-sided first set in which Chatchu-On scored eight times towards a 25-17 win. In the second set, Korea vastly improved their game, especially in attack, putting up a fierce fight that pushed the set into overtime. They even remained in control of the scoreboard for the most part of the first half and were eventually the first to reach set point. Thailand, however, stayed calm and regained control, taking the set at 28-26 with Thatdao relentlessly blocking for the winning point. However, Korea did not give up and went on to storm the third set on a 4-0 run, dominating the scoreboard through 16-13 before Thailand fought its way to another hard-earned comeback. After evenly matching 21-21, the Thai players produced a four-point series, topped off by a double block from Wipawee Srithong and Hattaya Bamrungsuk to win the match. Thailand’s next match is on June 14 against Germany, with which they will get their competition week two campaign in Brasilia, just before Korea takes on hosts Brazil in the same pool. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thousands of LGBTQ+ people, their allies and political leaders marched through central Bangkok on Sunday to mark Pride month and promote gender equality in the second official Pride parade to be held in the country. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said over 50,000 people joined this year’s Pride parade, more than double the attendance of last year’s event. Political figures joining the parade included Pita Limjaroenrat, leader of the Move Forward Party (MFP), which is pushing to lead a coalition after winning the most seats in the May 14 general election. Pita, who attended Sunday’s parade, told reporters that his party, once formed, "will support Marriage Equality (Act), Gender Identity (Act) and several others, including welfare." The coalition, which consisted of eight political parties, has made a joint pledge to pass laws, including the Marriage Equality Act, to ensure equal rights for all couples regardless of gender. Thailand has one of Asia’s most open LGBTQ+ communities, but some political activists say laws and traditional institutions have yet to reflect changing social attitudes and still discriminate against LGBTQ+ people and same-sex couples. There’s been another incident involving loan sharks in Thailand. In Pattaya, two members of a loan shark gang turned themselves in to the cops after they threatened a freelance reporter earlier this week. The incident began when local Thai reporter, Buronsak Bunnodyom, asked the two men not to litter loan flyers in front of his residence on Soi 9, Central Pattaya, Bang Lamung District. In response, the men, 23 year old Chinnawat Posingarm and 20 year old Natthiwut Sudprasert, verbally assaulted the reporter and attempted to attack him with a large rock. Following the incident, Chinnawat and Natthiwut surrendered to the police yesterday. Chinnawat admitted to littering loan flyers in front of people’s houses, while Natthiwut confessed to riding a motorbike for Chinnawat. The two were captured on video by the reporter as they threatened and attempted to attack him. Regarding their motive, the two men said they were annoyed with the reporter for warning them not to distribute flyers, adding that it was a spontaneous decision to pick up a rock and try to attack him. Chinnawat and Natthiwut have since apologised for their excessive actions, The Pattaya News reported.
