  4. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has reported that rice exports from Thailand have shown remarkable growth, reaching a record-breaking 2.79 million tonnes from January to April of this year. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed optimism over the figure, valued at 51.2 billion baht (US$1.5 billion) and representing a 23% increase compared to the same period last year. To further boost rice exports and assist crop production, the premier has instructed state agencies to take proactive measures. Efforts will also be made to maintain high rice prices in overseas markets. The recent hike in rice prices has been attributed to the stability of the baht, making Thai rice competitive in foreign markets. Thailand is currently the world’s second-largest rice exporter, trailing behind India. The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) expects exports to reach 8 million tonnes, surpassing the 2022 figure of 7.69 million tonnes. As of May 10, rice exports had already reached 3.05 million tonnes, with ongoing orders indicating a continued upward trend. Major markets for Thai rice include Iraq, Indonesia, the United States, South Africa, Senegal, Bangladesh, China, Japan, Cameroon and Mozambique. DIT Deputy Director-General Udom Srisomsong highlighted sustained global demand for Thai rice, which has kept prices competitive and eliminated the need for government intervention through price guarantees to support farmers. Amid ongoing political changes, the Thai Rice Exporters Association have expressed concerns over potential disruptions to policies affecting key crops. The agency also stressed the need for clarity when it comes to measures pertaining to crop prices from the Move Forward Party and Pheu Thai Party - the two main parties forming the new coalition government. The agency added that this is essential to avoid hindrances to the development of crucial crops. 6. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has confirmed plans to register Thailand’s traditional sarong, known as the pha khao ma, as an intangible cultural heritage with UNESCO to promote Thai culture at the international level. According to Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri, outgoing Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-O-Cha expects the pha khao ma to become a successful item for promoting Thai soft power after Thai dance performances featuring the traditional attire received global attention on May 6 during World Dance Day 2023. The first of two performances showed how Thai villagers wore the traditional cloth in their daily lives, while the second featured dancers wearing traditional clothing from all regions of the kingdom. The spokesperson added that the two shows drew massive applause and many foreign attendees asked the dancers to pose for photos with them. The Cabinet resolved in February to consider registering the loincloth with UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Anucha noted that the premier wants all government agencies to raise the profile of the pha khao ma as part of ongoing efforts to further promote Thai culture to the world. 8. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI) has expressed their readiness to promote trade and investment between Thailand and China. Following the success of the "Invest in Shanghai, Share the Future" event, co-organized by the City of Shanghai, the Bank of China, and Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI), Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri said Thailand remains very popular with Chinese investors. He particularly highlighted the kingdom’s strategic location in the region, along with its efficient transportation, logistics and infrastructure systems. Additionally, the spokesperson cited the nation’s outstanding industrial estates, particularly the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), which could potentially link up with the Shanghai Lin-gang Special Area in the future. According to the BOI, Shanghai has a policy to attract investment in Shanghai Lin-gang Special Area, which specializes in modern industries such as digital ventures, health and medicine, smart electronics, and EVs. This would therefore represent a unique opportunity to strengthen investment cooperation between Thailand and China, as these industries are in line with Thailand’s policy to promote S-Curve industrial development. The spokesperson also said Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha was pleased with the steady growth of trade and investment cooperation between the two countries, especially in relation to future industries. He added that three BOI offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou stand ready to further strengthen trade and investment connectivity between Thailand and China. 10. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has reported that almost 10 million foreign tourists visited Thailand since January, generating about 391 billion baht in revenue. Deputy government spokesperson Traisulee Taisaranakul disclosed that 9.47 million foreign tourists visited Thailand from January 1 to May 15, with most visitors coming from Asia. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, 415,309 foreign tourists visited Thailand from May 8 to 14, averaging more than 59,300 daily visitors. Those from Malaysia, China, India, Laos, and South Korea comprise the top five foreign tourists arriving in Thailand by nationality - accounting for 47.5% of all international visitors. Although Thailand is entering its low season and arrivals are likely to slow down, officials say there are still many incentives attracting international travelers. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is currently rolling out campaigns to entice foreigners to visit the kingdom in the months leading up to the peak travel season. The TAT also expects to see over 5.3 million Chinese arrivals, with the figure potentially exceeding 7 million if other tourism incentives are implemented. Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AEROTHAI) meanwhile announced over 12,800 flights from China to Thailand during the October 2022 to April 2023 period, an increase of 98% compared to the same period the previous year. Aerothai anticipates an increase in the number of flights from China, predicting 5,330 flights this month with the number increasing every month before reaching around 7,340 flights in September. The officers witnessed four men and two women using tranquilliser darts to catch the monkeys before apprehending them and saving over 10 macaques in the process. The authorities also seized three vehicles, 80 tranquilliser darts, a bag of animal feed, and other items from the group. 16. Here’s a quick list of things you must do when you’re next in Phuket… Simon Cabaret International ladyboy show that’s noisy, brassy and slightly tacky BUT very, very good and entertaining. You can book at your hotel concierge and they’ll send a van to pick up guests. 2 shows each night in Patong and one of the longest running shows on the island. The boasts ‘the best looking women in south east Asia’, and they might be right. Expect some questions from the youngsters. You may be ‘invited’ to get a photo taken after the show but a ‘top’ (around 100-200 baht) will be required. Siam Niramit Half way along the By-Pass Road in Samkong. Pre-show walk-around, international buffet and then a feature show in a huge theatre. And it’s on every night of the week. A great ‘Thailand 1.01’ experience which is suitable and entertaining for the whole family. You can do the pre-show and main show without the international buffet (but the buffet is a FEAST to behold!). The passive pre-show involves a Mauy Thai demonstration, march of elephants, a traditional Thai village, cosplay, crafts and games. Again, they will pick you up from the hotel.
