Image via GoogleMaps The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) board members have voted against the development of a 3.8 billion baht telehealth project, citing misalignment with the objectives of the Universal Service Obligation (USO) project budget. The majority of board members argued that the USO project’s focus should be on supporting telecom network installation and expansion to bridge the digital divide, while the telehealth project primarily invests in IT systems such as cloud server systems. At the board’s third meeting, four members voted to scrap the project, while three, including NBTC chairman Dr Sarana Boonbaichaiyapruck, supported it. The majority emphasised that they were not blocking useful projects but highlighted the telehealth proposal’s deviation from the USO policy. They also expressed concerns about potential legal risks for the board if the project were approved. PHOTO: ชูวิทย์ กมลวิศิษฎ์ Outspoken anti-cannabis campaigner Chuwit Kamolvisit was particularly pleased after seeing that the Move Forward-led coalition, in a memorandum of understanding (MOU), planned to regulate cannabis as a narcotic again. Chuwit was one of the attendees at Monday’s signing of MOU of the eight-party coalition led by the Move Forward party. In the MOU, the coalition said they intended to regulate cannabis as a narcotic and introduce penalties for its misuse after taking office. Despite this, coalition leader Pita Limjaroenrat assured that cannabis business operators who operate in accordance with the law do not have to worry, as the problem with marijuana lies in its legal status. After regulating cannabis, operators could still operate as usual but with certain additional regulations, according to Pita. Regarding this issue, Chuwit, who had been actively campaigning against the misuse of the plant, responded that he was pleased with the policy but stated that after it took effect, all cannabis shop operators had no choice but to close down their venues in his opinion. Pattaya City Mayor Poramese Ngampiches reported he addressed these concerns, explaining that the traffic islands are part of a project to upgrade the road and its surrounding areas to accommodate future underground electrical cables, thus avoiding the need for re-excavation. Mayor Poramese also highlighted the importance of the traffic islands in reducing accidents on Thepprasit Road, which have been frequent due to the absence of median strips, traffic lights, and emergency lights. He mentioned that surveys were conducted before the construction began to gather input from the general public and businesses on both sides of the road, with the majority expressing their agreement with the project. Additionally, Mayor Poramese assured the concerned parties that he would investigate the issue further and work towards fostering a better understanding with the affected residents. This development aims to improve the overall infrastructure in Pattaya, benefiting both locals and visitors alike while ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone who uses Thepprasit Road. Thepprasit Road has been notorious for accidents over the years. Only three weeks ago a motorcyclist lost his life in a tragic accident after speeding around a construction barrier and colliding with a commuter van. PHOTO via Khaosod Authorities in Phayao, northern Thailand, yesterday arrested a group involved in illegal logging and seized various items, including processed timber and amphetamines. The suspects were apprehended in the Wiang Lor Wildlife Sanctuary in the province’s Choon district. Officials from the 15th Conservation Area Administration Office received a report from Thanatphatcha PrasomSap, the director of the wildlife conservation section, on the group’s illicit activities. A patrol unit was dispatched to monitor the area and prevent any further illegal logging incidents. The officers spotted motorbike lights moving through the forest area of Huay Maw, triggering a stakeout. As five motorcycles emerged from the Huay Maw forest, the officers revealed themselves and attempted to detain the suspects. However, the group attempted to flee, with authorities managing to capture three of them, while two others escaped in the darkness. Upon a thorough inspection of the area, the following evidence was discovered: five motorcycles, seven pieces of processed Siamese rosewood totalling a volume of 0.2m³, three chainsaws, and 29 methamphetamine pills. The suspects, along with the confiscated items, were turned over to the Choon Police Station in Phayao for further legal proceedings. The incident took place on the Nato Hming-Kok Yang road in Trang Province, Thailand. The crash left the motorcycle rider, a 44 year old rubberwood processing factory security officer named Natthaphong, dead at the scene with a broken neck. The poorly lit two-lane road is noted for truck jams. On the left side of the road, investigators found a blue-black Honda Wave 100 motorcycle, severely damaged and entangled with the right side of an Isuzu pickup truck. There were visible bloodstains on the front of the truck. About 15 metres away in the grass lay Natthaphong’s body, face down in a pool of blood. Skid marks were observed, stretching approximately 30 metres from the initial point of collision to where the truck eventually came to a stop. Oil refinery facilities in Sriracha Chonburi Thailand, Image via flickr Thai Oil Plc (TOP), a subsidiary of the PTT Plc conglomerate, anticipates a more favourable outlook for oil trading in 2023, with global oil demand and supply projected to be nearly balanced. Crude oil demand is predicted to reach 101 million barrels per day (MBD), a 1.6 MBD increase from 2022, while supply is expected to be 101.3 MBD, a 1.5 MBD rise from the previous year, according to Nuttapol Nopparatwong, TOP’s vice-president for commercial planning. He cited estimates from the US Energy Information Administration, which indicate a reduction in the current oil supply surplus due to the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies, known as OPEC+, agreeing to cut production. Crude oil demand is likely to be driven by consumption, particularly in Asia. Nuttapol said… “Higher demand will correspond with additional production capacity from new oil refineries across Asia, which are scheduled to start commercial operation in the second half of this year.” Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/business/thai-oil-predicts-equal-oil-demand-and-supply-boosted-by-asian-refineries -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-05-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai restaurant in California forced to close amid racist dog meat rumours The Tasty Thai restaurant in Fresno, California, was forced to temporarily close its doors after racist rumours spread online that the owners were selling dog meat. The Tasty Thai restaurant in Fresno, California, was forced to temporarily close its doors after racist rumours spread online that the owners were selling dog meat. Seemingly out of nowhere, a string of negative and nasty reviews about Tasty Thai, a six month old restaurant, popped up on Yelp on Monday night. But the reviews were not about the food. “It was basically ‘go back to the country you came from you mother <deleted> dog eater,” Thai restaurant owner David Rasavong told local newspaper ABC30. “These types of disgusting allegations, especially a stereotype, this Asian stereotype that I really can’t believe still exists. It’s hard for me to fathom that it still exists in this day and age.” Rasavong reported the comments, but they didn’t stop. The same racist allegation, amid threats, was posted again and again. Confused about what started the rumours, Rasavong did some digging and found a video circulating on social media of a pit bull tied up outside the house next to his restaurant. A woman named Maria Alvarez Garcia posted a video of herself scolding the pit bull’s owner, claiming the dog was close to heat stroke. She suggested the adjoining Thai restaurant was selling dog meat. “That’s when I knew that triggered it and that’s when just the world just kind of came crashing in on us, you know,” said Rasavong. He said he doesn’t even know the owner of the house next door to Tasty Thai. Garcia, who filmed the clip, said, “When I saw that, yeah, I got pretty upset because it was cruel and inhuman the way that dog was.” But it was Garcia who triggered the rumours, with a Facebook comment… “They have different dogs every week and then they disappear. Sadly, Fresno PD nor humans gave a damn about saving this poor dog. There is also a market attached to this house. Maybe selling the meat too? Disturbing. But hopefully, with this, we are saving a lot more babies. Please share share share.” When reporters grilled Garcia, she panicked… Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/crime/thai-restaurant-in-california-forced-to-close-amid-racist-dog-meat-rumours -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-05-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thailand’s soaring household debt risks economic slowdown, warns NESDC Image via Flickr The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) issued a warning concerning Thailand’s mounting household debt, stating that it could become a significant issue if the economy and employment rates decline. Image via Flickr The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) issued a warning concerning Thailand’s mounting household debt, stating that it could become a significant issue if the economy and employment rates decline. NESDC Secretary-General Danucha Pichayanan emphasised the need for debt restructuring alongside financial and fiscal discipline at both individual and corporate levels. During a press conference discussing the economic outlook for the first quarter of 2023, Danucha highlighted that household debt had reached 15.09 trillion baht in the fourth quarter of 2022, a 3.5% increase compared to the same period in 2021, and accounting for 86.9% of GDP. Most of the growth in household debt resulted from real estate purchases, which grew by 5.2% in the fourth quarter of 2022. Personal loans have also continued to grow at an increasing rate of 20.8% over the last two quarters. However, non-performing loans relating to household debt remain stable at 2.62%. In the first quarter of 2023, the number of employed individuals was 39.6 million, a 2.4% increase from the same quarter in the previous year, with average monthly wages of 15,118 baht in the public sector and 13,762 baht in the private sector, excluding other benefits. The unemployment rate currently stands at 1.05%. Danucha also discussed the potential impact of raising the minimum wage, as desired by the General Election winners. While it would enable workers to earn more, it would also increase production costs, leading to higher product prices. Furthermore, foreign direct investment could be affected, as foreign investors may shift their production bases from Thailand to other countries if the wage hike pledge is implemented. Danucha said… “Personally, I think labour wages should not be set equally across the country as the cost of living differs in each area.” Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/business/thailands-soaring-household-debt-risks-economic-slowdown-warns-nesdc -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-05-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
