He said that commercial banks and other financial institutions have, however, exercised more caution in extending mortgages to customers after the Bank of Thailand decided not to extend the relaxation of loan to value ratio (LTV), a measure used to assess lending risk before banks approve a mortgage. Moreover, he said that the government measure to help debtors affected by the COVID-19 pandemic is due to expire at the end of this year, which will put additional pressure on commercial banks to be more cautious when granting new housing loans. It is believed that the man committed suicide because he was suffering from overwhelming stress. According to the police, a 26 year old man named Chayanin Sipho, crashed his white Honda City sedan into a white Hino truck yesterday. The front of the sedan was completely destroyed while the truck was unaffected. The truck driver was identified as 36 year old Amnart Thareesong. He waited for the police at the scene, cooperating fully with the investigation. The sedan driver, Chayanin, was found dead on the road beneath the bridge. His death was not related to the accident as a witness, 39 year old Pittaya Maneeon, saw Chayanin jump off the bridge. Pittaya told police he saw Chayanin walk away from the scene as he rode his motorcycle across the bridge. He stopped and offered Chayanin assistance. He asked whether Chayanin wanted any help but he did not respond and continued walking along the bridge. Suddenly, and without warning, Chayanin jumped off the bridge, leaving Pittaya and the truck driver in shock. Pittaya added that he did not detect any signs of alcohol consumption from Chayanin. 8. Photos via KhaoSod The Lower Court sentenced the former Mayor of Wang Wiset district to the death penalty today over the murder of a lawyer and land rights activist in Trang province, southern Thailand, two years ago. The hitman and another man were sentenced to life imprisonment. Today, Trang Provincial Court sentenced 52 year old Charinrat “Chuan” Kruthirat to death after he and two others were found guilty of murdering 54 year old Somsak “Lawyer Wao” Ochuenjit in 2021. Chuan was the mastermind behind the lawyer’s assassination. At 7.40am on May 4, 2021, a gunman fatally shot Somsak while he was working in a rubber plantation near his home. Somsak had not long before told his family that he was receiving death threats. Somsak was assassinated after leading a campaign for the right to agricultural land for poor farmers in Wang Wiset district. Tensions were high between local farmers occupying oil plantations without valid leases, government agencies, and private companies backed by politicians. Four days later, the Asia director at Human Rights Watch, Brad Adams, called on the Thai authorities to investigate the murder… “Thai authorities should not just stand by while grassroots activists in southern provinces are being murdered for standing up for their communities.” “The Thai government should urgently conduct a credible and impartial investigation and bring those responsible for Somsak’s death to justice.” Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/crime/mayor-sentenced-to-death-over-land-activists-murder-in-thailand -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-05-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 10. Photos via KhaoSod A businessman in southern Thailand claims his secret to great health is by drinking crocodile blood mixed with alcohol twice a day. He says he used to be exhausted but is now full of life after two months on the reptile juice. Every day, 52 year old Rojakorn Nanon from Na Tham Tai subdistrict in Trang province starts and finishes off his day with a glass of crocodile blood mixed with lao khao (Thai white spirit). He believes that the cocktail nourishes the body, the blood, and the nervous system. He says it is ancient wisdom. Rojakorn says he used to be physically weak. After tasting the crocodilian blood, he said he felt much better. He began drinking a cup of the alcoholic blood in the morning and one at night and now he swears by the stuff. He says the drink probably only exists in Trang province due to the prevalence of crocodile farms. Rojakorn’s crocodile blood is supplied by 53 year old Wanchai Chaikerd, the owner of a crocodile farm in Ban Pho subdistrict in Trang province. He is also the chairman of the Trang Crocodile Breeding Group, reports KhaoSod. Wanchai says he has run the freshwater crocodile farm for five or six years already. With a current population of 120 crocodiles, it is the biggest farm of its kind in the province, claims Wanchai. Before the pandemic, Wanchai mostly raised crocodiles to sell to buyers in central provinces for high prices. Most customers bought them for meat. However, Covid-19 made it difficult to export crocodiles anywhere, so he sold them locally for a discounted 4,500 – 8000 baht each. Image courtesy of Bangkok Post The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) is preparing a position paper outlining the economic policies favoured by businesses, with plans to submit it to the newly formed government once it takes office. Montri Mahaplerkpong, the FTI vice-chairman, stated that the paper is in its final stages and should be approved by the end of the month. The document will highlight the private sector’s expectations from the new government, urging the Move Forward and Pheu Thai parties, which secured the most votes in the recent election, to expedite the formation of a coalition government. This will enable the continuation of key economic policies initiated by previous administrations, such as the Eastern Economic Corridor scheme, which aims to transform parts of Chon Buri, Rayong, and Chachoengsao into high-tech industrial hubs. In addition, the FTI seeks the promotion of electric vehicle production and consumption, as well as support for bio-, circular, and green economic development, which was declared a national agenda item by the Prayut Chan-o-cha administration. Montri said… “If things go smoothly, the appointment of a new cabinet should be made in early August. A delay in forming the government will affect budget planning for the new fiscal year.” Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/business/fti-urges-swift-thai-coalition-to-back-high-tech-hub-and-green-growth -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-05-17 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
