  2. BANGKOK (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wissanu Krea-ngam has provided an update on the timeline for key political events following the conclusion of the general election, noting that the official election results will be announced by the Election Commission by July 13. The process of electing the speaker of the house and prime minister will then follow, leading to the formation of the new cabinet and the conclusion of the current government’s term around mid-August. The deputy premier further clarified the Senate’s role in the prime ministerial election process, revealing that as of May 11, 2024, the Senate will no longer have any voting authority on the matter, although it will retain its caretaker status. In the event of the process extending until the Senate’s term ends, the Move Forward Party would officially take the helm of the government. However, the party must secure 500 votes in total. Dr Wissanu added that "given the dissolution of the house of representatives, the existing government’s term has ended. Nonetheless, the Constitution requires it to persist in a caretaker role. Individual ministers may decide to step down, but the full cabinet cannot be disbanded. If that were to happen, there would be a lapse in duties as the appointment of new ministers is not permissible during this stage. Hence, any accountability ceases following the dissolution." He was referring to the Cabinet’s responsibility on the amendment of the forced disappearance act. Dr Wissanu further dismissed the notion of permanent secretaries fulfilling the roles of outgoing caretaker ministers, clarifying that there is no legal basis for a permanent secretary to assume ministerial duties, except in one specific case outlined in the Constitution that is not relevant to the present context. 4. BANGKOK (NNT) - A group of demonstrators recently staged a peaceful protest in front of Parliament House, urging senators to heed public opinion regarding the upcoming endorsement of the next prime minister. The event, the first such protest since the election, was organized at 5:00 PM by a group called the Democratic Alliance, and concluded at 8:00 PM on Tuesday. It featured scholars sharing their perspectives from a stage set up specifically for them. The protesters clarified that their intention was not to pressure Senators about the upcoming prime ministerial vote, but rather express their views and emphasize the importance of considering the voices of the people. They further urged senators to side with the people through an open letter, with the protest leader questioning the legitimacy of senators who were not democratically elected from the start. While the demonstration proceeded peacefully, security was stepped up as a precautionary measure, with four battalions comprising a total of 600 soldiers helping to maintain order. Tight security measures were also in place at the entrance of Parliament House, including inspections of vehicles and individuals. The protesters said they would observe how senators respond before deciding on their next course of action. 7. DFT Urges Durian Producers to Capitalize on Trade Agreements BANGKOK (NNT) - The Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade (DFT), Ronnarong Phoolpipat, has highlighted the prominence of fresh durian products from Thailand’s eastern region in the Chinese market. 8. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Director-General of the Department of Foreign Trade (DFT), Ronnarong Phoolpipat, has highlighted the prominence of fresh durian products from Thailand’s eastern region in the Chinese market. These products benefit from tariff exemptions under the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership. To further facilitate trade, the DFT recently visited local durian producers in Rayong Province. Their aim was to understand the needs of producers, encourage them to capitalize on existing free trade agreements (FTAs), and offer any assistance they may require. In the first quarter of 2023, Thailand exported approximately 70,000 tons of durian to China - representing a remarkable 224% growth compared to the same period last year. Durian from the eastern region is meanwhile expected to account for at least 91% of Thailand’s total durian exports. To maximize the benefits of the FTAs, entrepreneurs are urged to adhere to regulations set by China’s General Administration of Customs. It is also essential for exported fruits to possess phytosanitary certification, known as the Phyto Certificate, as evidence of their origin. In response to the issue of fraudulent certificates used by producers in neighboring countries, the Department of Foreign Trade has developed a system known as the DFT SMART Certificate of Origin (DFT SMART C/O) to help verify the product’s origin. Additionally, plans are underway to collaborate with Chinese customs officials to establish a link between relevant information systems. 10. BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister Prayut Gen Chan-o-cha has presided over a handover ceremony for humanitarian aid intended for people in Myanmar impacted by Cyclone Mocha. The event at Government House was attended by Myanmar’s ambassador to Thailand, U Chit Swe, together with Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai and Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri. During the ceremony, Gen Prayut expressed deep sympathy on behalf of the Thai government and people for those affected by Cyclone Mocha. He also conveyed his heartfelt wishes for a rapid recovery of affected individuals and communities, as they navigate the challenging circumstances they currently face. Additionally, the Thai government has sent officials to work at the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management, showcasing their commitment to providing assistance and support to the affected areas. In response, Ambassador U Chit Swe expressed his gratitude for the assistance, while acknowledging the impact of Cyclone Mocha on the lives and property of the affected population. He noted, however, that despite the cyclone being more severe than Cyclone Nargis in 2008, its impact was somewhat mitigated by the valuable experience gained from the previous disaster. The ambassador added that efforts to restore the 18 townships most devastated by the cyclone are now underway. 12. Solo political activist Ruangkrai Leekitwattana urged the Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday to dissolve the eight coalition parties, led by Move Forward, claiming that the MoU, which binds them together to form a government, is tantamount to domination of the parties and deprives them of their independence. The Palang Pracharath party member said that he wants the EC to investigate whether the insistence on the MoU by the Move Forward party is a violation of the Political Parties Act, because the document binds the eight parties together, depriving them of their independence. He claimed that he had closely monitored the MoU drafting process and discovered that the contents of document were the result of negotiations, adding that he had to lodge a complaint against all eight parties, instead of just the core Move Forward party. 20. Photo from SiamRath Residents are pleading for urgent assistance to address their contaminated water supply, which has caused rashes and sores all over their bodies in the Mueang district, Buriram province. The village head says he is aware of the issue and is preparing a budget to address the problem. Residents from Nong Bon and Khok Phet villages in the Khlanta sub-district, Mueang district, Buriram province, reported the problems faced due to the unclean water. After using the water, they experienced severe itching and developed sores. Residents urged the authorities to address the issue immediately. Upon investigation, it was found that water usage and the colour of the water in Nong Bon village (Moo 10) and Khok Phet village (Moo 9) appeared normal with clear and non-cloudy water. However, residents claim the water is polluted, with more than 100 households affected by itching and sores after using the water. A 49 year old resident, Wasana Chuan-Kratok from Nong Bon village, showed sores that have developed on her body due to the contaminated water. She mentioned that around two months ago, the village’s water supply became foul-smelling and caused itching when used for bathing. Wasana added that despite notifying the water supply officials, the situation remained unchanged. In an attempt to ease the itching, some residents are using a mixture of coconut husk and soap to clean their skin. Wasana expressed concern for young children with delicate skin and the elderly, like 80 year old Boon Sri-Lamai, who have to cope with the poor water quality. They are now using rainwater collected in pots to bathe conservatively until a solution is found. 22. A Thai man confessed to physically abusing his Thai-British girlfriend, forcing her to eat dog poo and killing her dogs today at a police station in Samut Prakan in central Thailand. Lawyer Kanthas “Gun Jompalang” Phongphaibookvej accompanied 25 year old “A” (pseudonym) to Bang Bo Police Station this morning to file three charges against her 24 year old boyfriend “Fin,” including “assault, imprisonment, and animal abuse.” The lawyer alleged that Fin punched and kicked A, and beat her with a chair, a mop, and a fan causing several wounds to her eyes, face, arms, and legs. Every time Fin grew violent, A’s pet dog would get scared and poo inside the house said the lawyer. Fin allegedly made A eat the dog’s faeces before strangling it to death, reports KhaoSod. Then, Fin felt guilty and bought A a new pet dog. But the same thing happened again and again until Fin allegedly bought and brutally killed six dogs. The lawyer informed the police that A was patient because she felt sorry for Fin, who said he saw his father beat his mother since he was a child. Initially, A took pity on Fin and thought he may be able to change. A could no longer endure the abuse, managed to escape, and seek help to file a police report against Fin, said the lawyer. He asked the police to ensure she was protected from him because he had been violent to A and threatened her. The lawyer said he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent.
