A plastic surgery clinic in Pak Kret district of Thailand’s Nonthaburi province has been closed by health officials for allegedly operating without a license, after a customer died shortly after undergoing breast implant surgery. A relative of the victim, 37-year-old “Kanokwan”, filed a complaint with Wang Noi district in Ayutthaya province, saying that her sister died about five hours after her return from the clinic and she suspects that the sudden death might be related to the breast implant. After receiving the complaint, Wang Noi police sought cooperation from Pak Kret police and public health officials in checking the clinic and found that it has no license to conduct implant surgeries. The clinic was ordered to cease operations. Tourism in Thailand 2023 Thailand has exceeded its target for tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2023, with a total of 6.15 million visitors from January to March 27. The numbers were announced in a statement by government spokesperson Traisuree Taisaranakul today. The government had initially aimed for 6 million arrivals during this period. The numbers coincide with the government’s extension of the usual 30 day visa waiver (for 64 countries) to 45 days. The extension was valid between the start of October, 2022, and March 31, 2023. No announcements have since been made to extend the 45 day visa waiver beyond the end of March although both the Thai Tourism and Sports Ministers and the Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand hav expressed their interest in proposing an extension. As the influx of tourists increased, the Thai government urged hospitality businesses to charge fair prices, especially in hotels and restaurants where prices were seen to have doubled. Ms Traisuree emphasised that the government was monitoring the situation closely. Foreign tour guides in Thailand The caretaker Thai PM, Prayut Chan-o-cha, has ordered strict legal action against foreigners who are working as tour guides, which is a profession exclusively reserved for Thai nationals. This announcement came after several complaints were filed, citing violation of the executive decree of 2017. According to government deputy spokeswoman Traisuree Taisarakul, the law clearly states that foreigners cannot work without a permit or fill jobs reserved for Thai citizens, including tour guide positions. The penalty for violators is a fine ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 baht, immediate deportation, and a two-year ban on applying for a work permit. Health Ministry Launches Campaign to Encourage Less Sugar Consumption BANGKOK (NNT) - A campaign by the Ministry of Public Health has been launched to encourage people in Thailand to consume less sugar in order to prevent health issues. BANGKOK (NNT) - A campaign by the Ministry of Public Health has been launched to encourage people in Thailand to consume less sugar in order to prevent health issues. According to Tianchai Suwanpen, an advisor to the deputy public health minister, the ministry launched the campaign to encourage people to consume no more than 25 grams or six teaspoons of sugar per day. In addition to marketing and awareness campaigns, the ministry will also urge beverage makers to reduce the quantity of sugar in their sweet drinks per serving size, from 6% to 5%. The campaign was launched in response to recent reports stating that from 2017-2019, Thai people, particularly those of working age, consumed an average of 25 tablespoons each day. Another report from the Department of Health (DOH) revealed that almost 10% of children in Thailand are clinically obese. The report has warned that this situation is expected to worsen if people fail to improve nutritional awareness and reduce sugar intake among young people. The World Obesity Federation also forecasts that rates of childhood obesity are expected to double between 2020 and 2035.
