Retiring in Phuket Phuket is a beautiful island in the Andaman Sea, unlike Samui, Koh Chang, Koh Pha Nga, Koh Tao or Koh Same… all located in the Gulf of Thailand. There are several quite distinct locations around the island that can be great places to retire. We leave out some of the more obvious selections, like Patong, which is clearly pitched, and priced, for tourists, and not a place we’d recommend to ‘live’ although it will always be there for you to visit. Here’s our selections… Rawai Rawai is a quiet area located on the southern tip of Phuket, and it is known for its proximity to beautiful beaches (although the actual beachfront along the Rawai promenade is not particularly memorable), seafood restaurants, quirky bars and burgeoning nightlife. The best residential areas are off the main sois and up into the hilly areas around the town. It’s about 50 minutes from the airport (leave yourself an hour during peak traffic), 10 minutes from Nai Harn Beach and 20 minutes from Phuket Town. BANGKOK (NNT) - Pattaya City administrators have called a meeting to discuss improving orderliness on Pattaya Walking Street and promoting tourism. Participating agencies included Pattaya police, the Tourist Police, the Bang Lamung district government, and Walking Street business operators. The meeting discussed how metal fences have started to be installed to deter vehicles from entering the walking street between 6 pm and 4 am each day. This move was implemented to address the issue of motorcycle taxis parking and offering their services on Walking Street after the 7 pm curfew time for vehicles. The meeting also discussed the garbage problem, garbage disposal spots, and places where cigarette butts may be discarded. The meeting touched on a re-organizing of the motorcycle taxis service on Walking Street. The current guideline is for the 11 motorcycle taxi queues in the area to be reduced to 5. This is a pending proposal to the relevant state agencies which have jurisdiction over the matter. The meeting asserted that Pattaya City has designated 3 am as the waste disposal time for businesses on Walking Street. Waste will be collected only at designated spots. Business representatives at the meeting were asked to adhere to the waste collection time. Those at the meeting also addressed the disorderly parking of motorcycles and automobiles in the various alleys on Walking Street. They also discussed setting boundaries for products displayed in front of shops. The meeting acknowledged that shop employees have been distributing numerous flyers, which are then discarded and become trash. The meeting attendees also reminded businesses they are not to employ forceful means to solicit clients or act in ways that may frighten tourists. There is, however, a sub district in Wang Nua district, where the people have vowed not to light forest fires or to burn farm waste in open spaces to protect their own livelihoods raising lac insects (kerriidae). Many Thai activists met on Thursday, March 16th, to discuss the possibility of the law on the protection of sex workers. The law would ensure those working in the trade would be equally protected and would not be stigmatized by society, said the group. It would also essentially allow legal prostitution in Thailand, a long debated item that officially doesn’t exist but is Thailand’s worst kept secret. The meeting was hosted by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand (FCCT), with the goal of calling out to the public that it is time for Thailand to revoke the crime of prostitution and return dignity to sex workers.
